Carpentry Framing - Install
$6,900
I hired SD Contracting to frame, insulate and install drywall in my unfinished basement as well as finish tearing out and replace a basic deck off of my back door. The owner came in at a fair price (even after he increased the price mid-project); however, I do not believe this to be the case now. I was told the projects would take "2-3 days tops" and it ended up taking a month. They almost never showed up on time (said 8am and rolled in usually between 10a-11a), never came prepared with materials and tools and would have to go shopping every day (the whole crew, not just one guy), took way too long of lunch breaks (one was 4 hours), and didn't put in an 8 hour day of actual work until week 4. One time they brought a baby on the job! After two weeks of working around their schedule, I had to start reporting to work 1-2 days per week and, at times, they would get frustrated with me that I had to work when the job should have already been done according to the owner's reported timeframe. Upon getting started, we agreed and signed a contract that 50% of the payment was required upfront and 50% at completion. Throughout the month, the owner, on numerous occasions, asked for advanced pay and got frustrated that I would not comply. Additionally, the owner, despite the photos he sent of framing jobs, did not know what he was doing. The studs were not spaced correctly and he didn't frame around the top or bottom, despite it being part of our agreement. The insulation he was going to order was wrong for being in a basement and then when he purchased the right stuff (at my demand) he haphazardly installed it. After about 2 weeks of hardly anything getting done, he brought 2 people that seemed to know what they were doing (1 for the deck and 1 for the drywall). The drywall guy told me several times that the owner didn't know what he was doing and had messed up several things. The guys that were brought after 2 weeks did a decent job. The deck got done and looks acceptable. As for the drywall, the parts that were completed prior to week 2 look absolutely ATROCIOUS after a coat of primer was applied (seemed to look okay before the primer was put on so I paid him for completion). The other parts weren't great, but they weren't horrid and I could fix them pretty easily. After the primer was applied, I took photos and texted the owner (who has a 1 year guarantee). He said he/someone would fix it and he would contact me within the week to get someone out. He never did. I reached out to him and scheduled a date. He then no called/no showed. He reached out to me after the no call/no show and explained he was having some health issues and that he would get someone out. I immediately asked when and never got a response. I am writing this review 3 weeks AFTER the initial text stating that I needed him to fix his mistakes and almost a week after the no call/no show. Throughout the entirety of the projects, communication was extremely poor and unprofessional at times (texting at any hour of the night, said things that made me uncomfortable as a female, etc.). He never took responsibility for his mistakes and always blamed a crew member. HE IS THE OWNER! In addition to that, he and/or his crew left tobacco dips and cigarette butts all over my yard and driveway that I had to tell them to clean up (and I'm still finding them). Additionally, after things were done I discovered somehow they got spackling all over my newly painted ceiling and did not clean it up nor offer to paint it and fix it. I also discovered that they were using MY TOOLS, not theirs, at times (he had even asked me to stand downstairs and use my hair dryer to blow dry the spackle because he wanted it to hurry up. I did not). I will have to put in MANY hours of my own time to somewhat fix this disaster. I wish I could send the com...
