Steven & Sons Heating and Cooling

On April 24th, Steven and Sons (Mariano Rodriguez) came to my condo to review the project and provide an estimate. During our conversations, he repeatedly stated that he had worked on this type of heating/cooling system many times and was very knowledgeable about how it worked. (This system consists of three components: a water heater that provides hot water and hot air for heating, an AC unit that provides cooling, and a set of coils that are connected to the water heater and the AC unit for distributing hot and cool air.) The system was providing hot water and heating, but was not providing any cooling. On April 24th, I signed the attached contract and provided a deposit of $5,500. Because I was paying cash for the project, there was a $500 discount. Mariano attempted to find the main water turn-off valve. He was not successful in finding the valve and told me to locate it. Once my daughter located it (it was right in front of him), he returned to my condo to take more photos/measurements of the system. He also tried to shut off the valve, but was not able to do so. He told my daughter that I needed to find a plumber to fix the valve. My daughter was able to close the valve with WD-40 and a few taps on the valve. Steven and Sons arrived on May 12th to begin the project. On this day, they installed the AC unit, which is located outside the building. No work was done inside the condo. They returned on May 13th to install the coils. (The coils are located in the ceiling of a room next to the utility room where the water heater is located. There is a cover over the opening in the ceiling; this cover is held in place with several screws.) When the coils were only partially installed, they stopped working because they were unclear as to how to do the wiring. At this time, they packed up all of their tools and left for the day. That evening, an issue occurred with the water heater, which had been working before the installation of the coils. Steven & Sons returned on May 14th. When they saw the error code on the water heater, they stated that this was a plumbing issue and that they could not fix it. They then stopped all work and left. When they left, there was metal trash in the driveway, and the room where the coils are located had dirt on the floor and dirty handprints on the walls. There was no attempt to clean up the mess. None of their workers wore shoe covers when entering the condo. When Steven and Sons left, there was no functional hot water, heating, or cooling system. I then contacted Angi for some suggestions and was given some options. I obtained an appointment with Thermal Mechanics for May 17th. Thermal Mechanics did not show up for the appointment and did not answer my call when I tried to contact him. I then had an appointment with Tipping Hat for May 20th. They agreed to fix the water heater, but wanted to do the entire project for two reasons. First, they identified issues with the installation of the coils and the AC unit, which required correction. Secondly, they would not offer a warranty for labor because they did not do all of the labor. Consequently, I decided to have Tipping Hat start over with installing a new AC unit and coils. Tipping Hat found the following issues with the installation work done by Steven and Sons: • The AC unit was oversized, and the coils were undersized. • A leak of refrigerant was found in the ceiling by the coils. • The system was not adequately flushed. • A stack of unsecured wooden blocks was used to support the coils instead of securing them with metal straps. • The wiring for the coils was not correct. • The screws needed to secure the cover over the ceiling opening were missing. Additionally, Steven and Sons have signs on their trucks indicating the company is a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB). Steven and Sons is not a member of the BBB. Because Steven and Sons left without completing the job, my daughter did not have hot water or heat for seven days. During this time period, temperatures at night were in the 30s. Steven and Sons also misled me regarding their ability to do this project. Mariano insisted that they had worked on similar systems many times and never had any issues with completing the jobs. However, they did not know how to do the wiring for this system. If they had installed coils before, they should have known how to do the wiring. As of June 3rd, Steven and Sons is refusing to return any part of my deposit. They are claiming that I need to pay for labor, loss in value of the AC unit and the coils, and for damage done to the AC unit and coils when they were removed by Tipping Hat. The remaining amount ($3,491.25) is not being returned to me because I refuse to sign a document with a non-disparagement clause. This clause is defined in an email to me from Mariano Rodriguez, dated May 21, 2026.

The primary reason I hired the contractor was to clean the furnace ductwork. The vacuum equipment they used left a layer of dust in every room in the house and on every surface including the carpet, bedding etc. I've spent 3 days dusting and vacuuming the carpet after the work. I think Steven and Sons is a very good company if you hire them to repair or replace your furnace, however they don't have the proper equipment for duct cleaning.

My experience with Steven and Sons company was as positive as it gets. I had a faulty furnace in the middle of the winter with a newborn at home. Mariano was quick to respond and provided transparent and very competitive pricing. I would 100% recommend Steven&Sons.

Steven and Sons came promptly to my house and quickly got my furnace replaced and running. However, in shutting off my furnace, my water heater would not restart. Their conversation with the manufacturer essentially came down to the control modules used were very fragile and were no longer used. These guys found a new part and acquired it for replacement. So far so good. Then the problem came. They failed to drain my water heater before removing the old control module. If there was no drain in the room, my basement would have been flooded. What was flooded was the insulation on my water heater. Soaked, all of it. No longer fit for service. Rather than acknowledge this, Steven and Son decided to install the replacement part and told me that it would be okay, just try to relight it in a few hours. I had to call a legit plumber to change out my water heater. Steven and Sons refuse to acknowledge their error and now insist on me paying them for destroying my water heater.

Booked them for Friday 11/1 and they never showed. No text or email to say they weren't coming. I reached out to see if they were coming and all they said is that a project was running long and they will need to reschedule. I rescheduled for 11/8 and they were a no show again with no heads-up. I wasted two days waiting around for this company to show up. Terrible customer service.

When our 27 year old HVAC system went out, we got quotes from a couple companies. Mariano was responsive and friendly via text. We felt good about the equipment suggested, price, and installation timelines. When install day came (the following Monday), the whole team showed up - they were on time, friendly, and careful with our home. They ran into a couple bumps with our existing thermostat and other equipment, all of which they were cheerful about getting taken care of (they called tech support for our thermostat and brought in wire splitting parts as needed). We reported that the new AC unit sounded like it was starting hard and they came back out a few days later to find that the Honeywell tech support person they worked with on day 1 gave them incorrect instructions. They fixed it up and now all is working great. They were even conscious about putting our vining plant over the thermostat (which it wasn't long enough to do when they started the process a few days earlier). We're thrilled with their competence, competitive pricing, attention to detail, and friendly demeanors. Highly recommend!

The tech, Mario (Mariano?), was completely booked all day but said he could swing by my place on his way home at night. After doing a few tests on the system he was able to determine the problem and fix the issue within 30 minutes. I felt he was very fair and honest and cared very much about delivering top-notch customer service. I highly recommend S&S for all of your hvac needs!
