I hired Tola and Son Construction to build a wood deck with a patio cover for $6,540, mostly because of the reviews I read here. Chris Tola and crew showed up on time Thursday and got right to work. Before starting Chris and I reviewed a major detail that we discussed in our first meeting. We went over it again in front of his 'foreman', he went over it with his foreman in front of me, then I went over it with both of them to make sure we were all on the same page. It was about a measurement being the same on the left side as the right and how it had to be correct, measured and double-checked before proceeding with the rest of the build. I got home after dark, saw that things were framed and underway and was happy. I talked with Chris briefly Friday morning before I left for work - he said they'd be done by day's end and would come by Monday at 8am for final payment. I got a text late afternoon asking if I could make it home before they leave to make the final payment. I could not, plus I wanted a chance to look over their work before cutting a check. Chris then texted that he'd be by at 8am on Saturday to collect the check. That was a red flag for me. Why the sudden rush? What was wrong with Monday? I was getting home after dark and there were major thunderstorms with heavy rain forecasted all that morning so I would not have an opportunity to inspect the job. Chris texted pics and the detail I mentioned earlier did not look even on the right and left but I needed to see in person. I went out in the dark with my tape measure and, sure enough, it was way off. I texted Chris that he could come by on Monday but that I would not make final payment until some things were fixed. The work was sloppy and hurried...main frame wasn't connected at right angles, cuts were crooked, brackets were hung crooked. Chris said I was overly picky and my expectations were above the norm. I asked him why he (or they) did not measure on the right and left before moving on and he said "I thought it looked even." He also said "You can only cut a board so straight." SERIOUSLY? They framed the posts for the support beams instead of cutting the board to the right length to begin with (did not ask me about it first)...they were so crooked it was laughable --- and it just highlighted the fact that NOT ONE SINGLE vertical support post was set square nor were the four posts squared up on one another. SLOPPY, SLOPPY, SLOPPY. Chris agreed to fix a list of 8 things. The next day I got a text that they were done and he would be by at 8am to collect final payment. When I got home only half of the items had been fixed. So I let him know I would not make final payment until everything was fixed. This went on for days. He would text and say they were done and he was coming to get the check --- and each time they would only do about half of the items. It was utterly ridiculous and insulting to my time and patience. Chris got very belligerent one morning when I would not make payment until the last item was fixed. He was supposed to come at 8am. I texted him at 7:15am to update him. He told me he was parked in my driveway, he then went into my backyard and starting ranting and screaming on the phone and accusing me of wanting a discount. I told him I wanted the work done right and was happy to make full payment. He said he would not let me leave until I paid him. I reminded him that is illegal and that I live half a mile from the police station. He also broke my gate after slamming it twice in a rage. In the end he got 100% of the money he was owed. Six weeks after completion it is falling apart. They built the whole frame and canopy support with only screws or is literally pulling itself apart. Now I have to pay to have someone competent fix it.

On time and did what they said. Good crew and quality of workmanship. Happy with the outcome, but still trying to have a few minor tweeks responded to. I found them to be fair and honest people.

Overall it was a good solid build. They were working in 100° heat, there were some sloppy cuts and warped boards that should not have been used. Other than that, we are happy with it.
