Deck or Porch - Build or Replace
We hired Todd to re-build our large deck, add a shingled roof over half of the deck, and complete a paver patio. We gave Todd a $9,000 deposit. Eight weeks after signing the contract, Todd had completed less than 10 hours of work. All of which had to be re-done/torn down. Specifically, the quality of work is inconsistent with Ohio Residential Code (Todd used 0.75-inch thick boards, not real deck boards, did not secure support joists to the deck frame, did not add needed stair stringers, etc.). The work completed was sloppy and Todd utilized old and discarded materials from the demo of our 30-year-old deck. Additionally, Todd bumped back the start date of our project on multiple occasions, failed to arrive as scheduled on more than one occasion, and failed to provide a project timeline and projected completion date despite being asked multiple times. Further, Todd failed to follow the contract by requesting and accepting payment for additional work (new support joists) without providing a change order; told us he would be doing a metal roof instead of a shingle roof without approval or change order, and requested money outside of the timeline dictated in the signed contract (Todd had only purchased 60 boards that were not even used as deck boards, and 10 support joists, but continued to ask for money beyond the $9,000 already provided.) We terminated Todd and requested our deposit, fewer materials, and labor costs, be returned, Todd never provided that, essentially stealing $9,000 from us. I would not recommend him to anyone. I need more characters to specify, in detail, all of the issues with the quality of his construction, problems with materials used, break down of the project timeline, and his poor communication skills.

Deck or Porch - Build or Replace
Our contract with Todd Eisel of T-Ice Carpentry Works LLC required him to complete a residential deck project within 2 weeks, even though he said he could probably do it in 1 week. We paid for all Trex composite materials like 80 deck boards, 11 railings, fascia, screws and hidden fasteners, and deck lights. For $8500 Todd would supply labor to remove existing deck boards, rails, and stairs, haul it away, determine if old frame could be used for new composite deck and if so inspect and replace softwood, add bracing for strength, extend deck and skirting 3 ft, square and level the frame, build new stairs and hinged access door in skirting beneath deck, install Trex deck, rails and custom lighting. Contract required all to be done IAW my design, Trex guidelines, and local building code. He breached the contract by quitting after 3 weeks passed, completing less than 10% of the project, and kept our two down payments of 25% each. No work was performed in Week 1. He disappeared after working two partial days or about 10 hours total in Week 2. Then he did not return texts or calls and he acted disinterested and rude, only saying he had other projects besides ours even though he never told us that b In Week 4 I insisted he return to discuss my concerns regarding schedule and when he would finish the project since we are now in Week 4. He still would not give me a schedule. I asked how he would eventually extend deck without a building permit, since he had told us in Week 1 no permit or inspection is required since we mainly just replacing deck. We later learned this was not true in this case and it finally came out he planned to get around it by not installing new posts or other support on or into the ground. He wanted to do a 5 foot cantilever he said would meet code. As an engineer, that method sounded unsafe. I researched and found ample evidence on cantilevers saying 5 feet cantilever will not meet building codes or pass inspection and that the cantilever could not exceed 2 feet in our case. I explained and tried showing him what I found. He got angry, refused to look at it and just said it will be fine and he could even drive his truck on it. I said I am concerned for the safety of my family and want everything to meet code and do not want to void the 25 year Trex warranty. He got angry and said he QUIT. I asked for our money back and reminded him this is week 4 of a contract requiring completion in 2 weeks or less. He first said he would give the second down payment back, and I said he had not removed all of old deck and has done nothing to build new deck. I said he can keep $800 for his few hours work thus far and return the rest but he refused, cussed at me and left. I sent text asking for all but $800 back, as we had given him $4250 or half the total labor fees. He has not replied or returned any money and 25 more days have passed. I contacted the building inspector and he confirmed my thoughts on the cantilever and he said there it would NOT meet building code and the builder would be required to submit his plan for review and decision. I have proof. When he removed deck boards in week 2, he did not unscrew the screws. He pounded and ripped the boards out, leaving the screws in the joists and causing some damage to the joists. He then took a power saw and sawed off the screws, so bottoms still remained in joists! I did not say anything. He also damaged lawn removing a few bushes around deck he said he would do for FREE if he gets the contract, and he agreed he would not use heavy equipment of any kind that could damage our soggy spring lawn. Still he brought in a large rental machine he rode on with big tank treads to propel it. Left deep ruts and tore up some turf and he never apologized for it. I did not say much about it at the time but I mentioned my frustration about it when we were arguing before he quit. He never apologized either.

Kitchen - Remodel
He installed all new cabinets and a quartz countertop. Some wiring to built in appliances and plumbing had to be done also. The company is a 5 rating. He did everything we asked and made sure we were satisfied with the completion of work.We will continue to go to HomeAdvisor for updating or fixing our home.

Carpentry Framing - Repair
Todd woodworking skills were great in rebuilding our screened-in back porch. The ceiling was totally replaced. The screening and wood supports were replaced. He is professional and exercised good judgment on this project. He also made repairs to our home soffit repairing damaged plywood. Todd did complete the repair by painting the porch and trim on the entire house. His experience made him a good choice for our project. He worked independently and called me when he needed my input. I received five-star quality work and would recommend him to others. His charges were fair and reasonable.

Carpentry Framing - Repair
I got a reply and quote the same day I made the contact for outdoor wood repair. He was at my home two days later, completed the work excellently and efficiently, and went above and beyond with advice, putting dirt in place by the lower boards, and cleaning up well. Such a pleasant man with whom to work, too!
