Backsplash install. Reached out for an estimate, they responded quickly and professionally. They came to look at the space, get measurements, and talk about the project. When they were there, I had the tiles laid out and displayed the way I wanted them on the wall, they took notes, and off they went. They quickly got back to me with an estimate, and quoted 2 days for the job at $30 per sq ft. No paperwork or documentation was ever sent, signed or used at any time. They conduct business and billing through paypal. Naively, I paid in full upfront, thinking I would have to pay for it all anyway. I should have just paid the deposit. Upon arriving to do the work (with no notes), the installer, Brian, was very preoccupied with turning this project into a 1-day job if possible; mentioning it several times before I left him in peace to work. I work 3rd shift so ended up sleeping while the work was carried out. When I woke up, the contractor had already left. The design was completely messed up, despite being explicitly shown it during the estimate visit, with the actual tiles displayed the way they were to be laid out. A huge gap was left between the tile and vent hood, easily seen when seated at the kitchen table. The tiles were not only cut short for this part, but not even close to straight lines, making it more obvious. He did such a bad job caulking I had to re-do it (globs in places, gaps in others, did not even bother to smooth it out). He did such a hasty clean up that everything had to be wiped down again. When I reached out to them to find out what happened and how to fix it, the response was poor. When I called the business number, the outgoing message indicated a full voicemail box, no message could be left. They could only be reached by text, which went unanswered. 4 Days later, I texted pictures of the caulk and vent hood, and finally got a 1 text response. No responsibility was taken. They tried to tell me the design was incompatible with the manufacturers recommendations. Even if this were true, why hear about it after the fact? They then pointed out that removal of the tile would damage the wall, damage I would presumably be responsible for, not to mention replacing the tile that could not magically be remade whole and then re-cut according to the design. An offer was made to come by for * touch-ups.* Since it was already re-caulked, and it was unrealistic to have the job done according to specs, I have not taken them up on it. Even if I had, I doubt they would be too eager, given I have not heard from them since I texted back to their 1 text response. Given the outcome, $30 per sq ft is too high a price, especially since the rogue design meant 17 of the 27 sq ft needed no cutting or manipulation of tiles, other than putting them on the wall, which I am sure made it easier to shave off the second day of the project. Thanks to TLO Tile, I do not have a backsplash that seamlessly fits in to the space. Admittedly, because of the tile itself, it works just enough, and most people probably will not notice how bad it is compared to the intended design. Still, instead of having something that I find satisfying and that I feel was worth it, I now have something that I have to learn to live with.
