What a disaster: a botched countertop job and abhorrent customer service. I ordered new quartz countertops for my master bathroom from Tarheel Countertops owner, Chuck Friend. I asked that the edges be eased or whatever style is the most squared to match my kitchen countertops (which he saw) \because he did not present me with any visual options. Among a myriad of other issues, the countertops he installed have a beveled edge instead of eased and they do not match my kitchen countertops, as requested. I notified Chuck and he sent an email with an edge chart which he would never send before and does not even show an eased edge it just shows a straight edge (which is the most squared on the chart). It also shows a beveled edge, which is clearly what I got. I sent him a photo and he called me back to apologize and said that the edge was, in fact, beveled. He then said that he would notify his fabricator about their error and after they credited him, he would either replace the countertop or credit me back. I asked for a credit. Chuck then switched gears and said he needed to come to my house. Apparently, his fabricator refused to credit him because they were cut as ordered â so it was apparently Chuck who botched the order. Now realizing he was going to be saddled with the cost, Chuck walked into my house, looked at the bathroom counters, and basically insulted my intelligence, insisting that they have an eased edge just like the kitchen (the bathroom counter edges look nothing like the kitchen see photos). He then stood there in my kitchen and I kid you not started FLOSSING HIS TEETH with a floss pick and rudely demanded that I write him a check so that he would leave. As I was there alone, I just wanted this disrespectful and abrasive man out of my house, so I begrudgingly wrote the check. I have since confirmed with TWO different countertop fabricators that I was, in fact, correct (which Google research only reinforces): The counter edges are NOT eased. They are beveled. I wrote an email to Chuck to let him know that his peers (and basic facts) are at odds with his assertions and he replied I will get back to you. the hat was over 3 weeks ago and despite multiple emails, I have not heard back from him. If that were not bad enough, I would like to point out that after I placed the order he never even scheduled a date-time for the install with me. It was not until I contacted him for the umpteenth time to schedule the install that he informed me that his installers were literally on their way to my house, to arrive at any moment. I then had to cancel a work meeting without notice, so that I could scramble to go uninstall our sink plumbing by myself in the few minutes I had to do so. In addition, the edge of the countertop is cracked and the sinks that were included with the install have parts coming loose. Save yourself the grief and go with another countertop company. Even if all had gone perfectly, who in the heck wants a stranger flossing his teeth in your kitchen DURING A PANDEMIC while lying to your face and saying what you are seeing with your own eyes is not actually so, and demanding money in order to get rid of him. It is not even close to being worth the hundred dollars I saved by choosing him over the other fabricator.
Response from Tarheel Countertops, LLC
"THIS IS CHUCK FRIEND, OWNER AND OPERATOR OF TARHEEL COUNTERTOPS LLC, REGARDING THE ABOVE COMMENTS MADE BY CARRIE S. SUBJECT: 4-16-21 CONSULT REMOVAL OF BATHROOM COUNTERTOPS AND REPLACE WITH 3 CM QUARTZ, 2 RECTANGLE SINKS, CUSTOMER PICKED OUT EDGING, WHICH WAS ON HER PRE EXISTING KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS. JOB ORDER SUBMITTED 4/20: TO: ABSOLUTE STONE IN CARY, NC INSTALLATION DATE: 4/27, CUSTOMER WAS PRESENT FOR APPROXIMATELY 1 HR. DURING INSTALLATION OF QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS, AND 2 RECTANGLE SINKS INSTALL LOOKED GREAT, NO CRACKS OR ANY PIECES MISSING, PER THE SHOP, INSTALLERS, AND MYSELF DURING A FUTURE VISIT. 2 WEEKS LATER CUSTOMER RESPONDING BY TEXT REGARDING A EASED EDGE, BUT FEELS SHE HAS A BEVELED EDGE AFTER PICTURES SEEN AND MY FABRICATORS CHECKING THEIR WORK, WE SET UP A FOLLOW-UP MEETING TO DISCUSS CONCERNS... 5/26 FOLLOW UP MEETING & PAYMENT OF $1075.00 WAS PAID IN FULL, STILL NO MENTION OF WORK NOT DONE CORRECTLY, OR UNPROFESSIONAL WORK DONE. AT THIS TIME I EXPLAINED TO HER KITCHEN COUNTERTOPS WERE NOT CUT ON THE NEW MACHINES THAT ARE PRESENTLY BEING USED TODAY, WHICH IS MORE A QUALITY UNIFORMED JOB. SHE STATES SHE IS CHECKING WITH OTHER STONE COMPANIES.... DURING THIS TIME, SHE ASKED FOR A SUBSTANTIAL DISCOUNT, AND SHE COULD THEN BE OK WITH HER CUSTOM COUNTERTOPS. IN CONCLUSION: TARHEEL COUNTERTOPS DISPUTES THE WORD ABHORRENT VERBIAGE THAT DESCRIBED OUR BUSINESS, AND ALSO THIS IS A DEFAMATION OF CHARACTER, WHICH IS TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY BY TARHEEL COUNTERTOPS, INSTALLERS, AND FABRICATORS. TARHEEL COUNTERTOPS BACKS UP ALL OUR WORK. THE QUARTZ COUNTERTOPS AND SINKS WERE COMPLETED PROFESSIONALLY DONE FROM BEGINNING TO END, THIS CUSTOMER HAS A CUSTOM CUT BATH VANITY TOP, AND A PERFECT INSTALL, IN CLOSING, CUSTOMER WASNT ASKED TO REMOVE PLUMBING PRIOR TO INSTALL. IT'S UNFORTUNATE THAT THIS CUSTOMER IS LOOKING FOR A CREDIT ADJUSTMENT WHICH NOW HAS MOVED TO A REFUND.... THERE WILL BE NO RE-CUT, NO CREDIT, OR REFUND. THE OUTCOME WOULD'VE BEEN DIFFERENT, IF A MISTAKE WAS MADE BY OUR FABRICATOR, INSTALLER, OR DAMAGE BEFORE OR DURING INSTALL, ETC... THANK YOU CHUCK FRIEND, OWNER OF SMALL INDEPENDENT BUSINESS"

Chuck and his crew were fantastic! I was in town for 2 weeks visiting my daughter and her family and they decided they wanted to get their counters done before I left. Chuck was able to pull it off in 1 week! Very professional and done right. Highly recommend Tarheel Countertops, LLC!

We hired Tar Heel Countertops and are very satisfied with the project from start to finish. Chuck came out initially and gave us several ideas. He then recommended several companies for the stone slabs. Once we chose the stone, he came out again and made temples. Chuck really helped in the design and made some suggestions that made a huge difference in the overall look of our kitchen. The counter-tops are beautiful and we couldn't be happier. My husband and I are very picky people and we would totally recommend this company to others.

They removed an existing granite countertop very carefully, so it could be re-used, then installed the new. In addition, they cleaned up and fixed some problems on existing countertops that my builder had done incorrectly.

Chuck (owner) is an awesome guy and he knows his trade but the experience falls quite short with some of his contractors. One of the younger male contractors went throughout my entire house and opened all closets and even at one point picked up a temporarily window-mounted camera (some people forget we're in 2018 and some smart homes have sensors all over). Also, in an act of pure folly, the other contractors mounted quartz counters on top of the wooden boards they were replacing; it was so hilarious and pitiful, I felt sorry for them instead of mad. The quartz was cut and finished very nicely and there's no complaints about the material and Chuck himself, it's just the contractors that ruined an otherwise perfect experience. Oh, and also, one of their trucks leaked oil onto a brand new driveway... Yet another ding to their overall rating.
