Hi, I'm Troy. long ago ( 1975 ) and far away ( LA ) I started laying carpet in a union piecework shop.When I missed the union apprentice class on wend nights due to working; I would have to go downtown and spend all day sat pulling thousands of staples out of mock ups with pliers ( for free ) . We did resi in Beverly Hills and new construction for a 70 mile radius. We did the Bermuda Dunes country club in Palm Springs and the Yellow Brick Road offices for Elton John. Carpet backing was made of jute from Asia. In 1979 & 1980 mills tested ( nightmare) different backings. They settled on action bac which is similar to 2 layers of glue.It could be made in USA and was better with bacteria when wet. Installers put a stretch ( tension) in all directions to hold carpet in place. When tension is released in one direction, the carpet is drawn upward by the tension going the other direction causing wrinkles. Tension can be released by inst error, walking, furn, moisture, humidity. see photos
