This guy is a total nightmare, I had to fight with him to complete every part of the project. He told me he would have the plans done in two weeks, but after six weeks I still did not have anything to take to the building dept. In every conversation I had with him he was unconcerned about getting the project completed and only interested in getting money from me. After he sent me the completed plan set for the building dept. he went dark and would not answer my calls. The plan set was incomplete missing several key items. A total waste of money.

Ted Young was introduced to me by the realtor who helped us buy a house in Santa Cruz. The house had a storage shed/carport that had been illegally converted into a dwelling unit. It was awful; ugly, in bad repair and nowhere near any building code. We knew it had to go, right down to bare dirt. I met with Ted, showed him some preliminary floor plan ideas I had for the structure. He listened, inquired and showed that he had a keen appreciation for what we wanted to do. He was off to the races. Within a week he had four alternative layouts for us to consider and we quickly chose one. It had an open floor plan with high ceilings in the living area, a separate bedroom, a bathroom and a small workshop. The clean, attractive design melded well with the existing house. And, Ted offered his services at a most reasonable price. Then we began the city approval process. I tested Tedâ s patience by revolting against some of the cityâ s demands for building design and excessive fees. Ted was always there to support me and offer constructive solutions to the issues raised. We met with the Building Department innumerable times over 18 months. We got our permit. Ted was always calm and resourceful. I could not have done it without him. Now the structure is nearing completion. It is wonderful, attractive, functional and elegant inside and out. It is an outstanding addition to the housing in Santa Cruz. I highly recommend Ted for his architectural design talent, his thorough and complete work, his reasonable fees, and his ability to work congenially to overcome obstacles.

Ted first worked for me as a laborer/carpenter back in 2002. Ted designed and drafted plans for an ADU and did a great job, and then Ted also drafted plans for a garage and room addition in the Scotts Valley area which was completed around 2012.

I wanted to share my experience about Ted Young, who drew up the plans for our home in Carmel By the Sea. He has done more than one project for us. From the beginning, we had a good feeling about Ted. He listened to what we wanted and continually adjusted our plans as needed. He was always available by phone, text, or email. He made several trips to our house, which was over an hour from his office, to measure and look at innovative ideas we had, or to meet contractors. I canâ t say enough about his great customer service. His down to earth, approachable personality, made him a pleasure to work with. I would highly recommend Ted to anyone who needs quality designed plans for their home at a reasonable price. We will definitely use Ted again.

Drafting or CADD Service
Ted Young if you want a genuinely bad customer experience then Ted Young is your guy. If there is any urgency in your project what-so-ever or you have any complexity in your project then you will do yourself a disservice by hiring Ted. While his contract includes a clause that included deadlines he ignored them. He also requested payment well in advance of when the conditions for the payment were complete. He insisted that drawings are never accepted the first time around but when he was provided a list of over 20 items that he was missing from a checklist published by the city which outlines items required in a drawing he simply ignored the concerns. When he was sent an email by the city stating that the drawings would not be accepted due to a code enforcement violation he simply ignored it. These issues combined with an extremely dismissive and condescending attitude toward any concerns that I raised as a customer lead to an extremely unproductive relationship and what often felt like attempts at extortion for even the most basic changes. I was so disapointed by Ted Young Residential Design that I have fired him and have decided to finish the drawings myself. Do not hire Ted because of the TYRD that he is.

We always strive to be urgent when responding to our clients and all of our clients are very happy customers of ours as you can see on our reviews and ratings page on our website and this site as well. As for payment, we request payment at time of completion of the phase or project. We are unclear as to what you meant in your review of us, however, we always have happy clients with every project, so we think maybe perhaps you may have been in a hurry and you were not completely patient with the process that doing a large project takes, such as this one. The items that you seem to have thought were missed, are actually very typical in a project submittal, as there are always plan check comments from the city or county department, so in fact, we did not miss 20 items. Those items are things we handle in our office, and we know how to handle them very well with over 20 years experience. We prefer our clients to not send us check lists from the city department, as we are professionals and we can figure out things that need to be done on our own - after all, that is why you hired us in the first place. It is up to us to do our job as our clients do not typically get so involved in the project submittal phase, as that is what we are here for! We are not sure why you felt so uncomfortable, but we hope that you have a better experience next time with whomever you choose to hire. And yes, we do charge for revisions, I am sorry that you did not understand that part. It is very typical for any design professional to charge for making revisions to a project that are requested by the owner. Feel free to contact us and we would be happy to explain everything to you!"
