We bought a house in an area with a high water table and discovered flooding and moldy basement walls only days after moving in. Having to rip out a finished basement to waterproof and then refinish was a pain, but worked exactly as advertised. After mold remediation, installing a french drain, battery backed sump pumps, discharge pipes, and structural reinforcements, we finally had a comfortable, dry, and fully usable basement. No musty smell, dry concrete slab and foundation walls. I would hire A-1 again for waterproofing any time.

They are a sleazy, horrible, outfit. They threatened us if we didn't pay them and they were going to sue us. I do not recommend them. They are horrible. They were underhanded. It's not that they did a bad job and they did know what they were doing, but they left a mess with all of their stuff around. The work itself wasn't bad; they were just sloppy on the cleanup. They left paint on the walls and didn't peel stuff off. They did do what they were suppose to do, just the before and after was horrible.

When it came to money, they told us we had to pay them more, and because we didn't have all of the money at once, the guy threatened us. I would never ever use them again, or encourage anyone to use them. The owner was the worse.
Response from A-1 Basement Solutions
"My name is Doug Lynch and I am the owner of A-1 Basements. We installed a French drain and sump pumps at this house as we contracted to do. This lady wanted the walls scraped after we were finished and we said no because that is not something that we do, nor was it on the contract. She insisted that she wanted it done and we told her that if she wanted additional work, there would be an additional charge. When she threatened to not pay us the balance due on the contract, I told her that I would take her to court if she did not pay."

The work was done quickly and professionally. And they left the basement very clean.
It's been almost 2 years and everything works perfectly. No sign of water anywhere. Nice.
I never give someone an F but A-1 deserves one. First, Burke came in during the summer to inspect basement, house for water issues. He said everything was order, no signs of water, told us our french drain was fine, but than told us we needed a new sump pump with back-up. The sump pump was old and the pipe that brings water outside needed to replace.
We agree it would be a good investment. They replaced the sump pump and put a new pipe in for $2.800. I told them intially I i wanted the pipe outside away from house and onto lawn. They did the job and when i came home the pipe was run basically right next to the house and close to the basement windows. Oppostie of what i asked for. I called Burke and he said they had there best crew on site and this was the only way to run the pipe and they couldnt do it under the lawn away from house. I questioned him but than repspected their opinsion since they are professionals
Within a day of install, we had to call Burke back because they inistalled a battery that didnt work. Brand new sump pump and battery didnt work.
This winter we had some water leaking into our basement and had Burke come back. . He now told us we need a brand new french drain , that the one we had wasnt working and it wasnt installed correctly. This is after he came 4 months prior and said nothing about the french drain after doing a full inspection. He told us it would cost 13k. he also told us in the summer there was no signs of water issues.
So , he did an 180 after intially telling us all was fine. Why? Because he is a salesman. They look to sell you on whatever they can instead of offering up solutions. We had another reputable basment company come in and the town engineer. They told us the pipe A-1 installed out of sump pump was not the corect material and was going to freeze. They also agreed it shoudl have been away from teh hbouse but Burke siad they coudlnt. In addition, they also said we dont need a new french drain.
I would never recommend A-1 for service. The customer service is terrible. Bruke is not trustworthy.
F!!!

Just not well, they wear extremely messy, broke a basement window (that they said they would replace but made no real effort) and they were lazy and did not tighten the fitting or use any epoxy to seal the joints. So during the first big rain the pumps started spraying water all over the basement.
They came back to fix them but I had already fixed them. I also had to change the flow of the outside discharge as it did not pass inspection. I went with them for the price and I got what I paid for.
From the beginning explaining what their company is to the last day of work and painting all of the workers were extremely professional. The first time we called they were punctual in coming in and setting us up with an appointment. When they came to our house they used a swab and tested our basement confirming we had mold. Their team came in dug up a trench inside and ourside installed their purifying system and bombed the basement to rid the mold. They also painted downstairs once done. We have not had an issue with the basement flooding since.
I used A1 basement last year and never had the chance to give him an excellent review. So here goes. We just moved into a house a couple of months before. All the problems started presenting itself, one of those were water coming from the ground. I had no choice but to look for professional help. A1 basement was the cheapest and the earliest contractor that can accommodate me since this is an emergency. He was very professional and easy to talk to. He will even tell you to do it yourself if it is advisable. I'm talking about my next project, french drain around the property. He even accommodated my form of payment because my other credit card has a low minimum. Overall, everything went smoothly. Definitely A1 basement is a company that can be recommended.
By the way, the french drain has a lifetime warranty and transferable.
When we moved into this old Victorian we didn't realize we would have a problem with water showing up in our basement every time we had a big rain.
I called A-1 and another company to consult on the problem. They, of course, were very familiar with this problem and recommended a french drain system into a sump with appropriate pumps to send the water outside. The salesman (Bob) did a great job of explaining what they would be doing, the materials, and their knowledge of working on old houses.
Because of the vintage of the house (1901) it's a little tricky installing the french drain; normally you put the drain right at the base of the foundation wall; because the foundation in old houses are relatively fragile, you need to put the drain about a foot away from the wall and add a plastic liner to ensure water coming in at the base of the wall is channeled into the drain system.
I liked both company's proposals but decided to go with A-1.
Their crew (maybe 8-9 guys) showed up right on schedule to start 4-day job. Initially, the foreman thought it might take 5 days but they were able to finish in 4. I must tell you this was a huge, messy job BUT they did a great job of minimizing the impact on our house. They helped us consolidate all of our stuff in the center of the basement, built a plastic barrier to protect it, then went to work.
They outlined the location of the drain line and the sump, then began jack-hammering which lasted two days (no napping in our house during that time). They broke up the basement floor to dig the trench; that left a huge amount of debris to haul out, one 5-gallon bucket at a time. They lined the trench with the appropriate fabric, then drain rock, then installed the drain pipe. They dug the sump and installed the 2 sump pumps and connected the whole interior system. They drilled through the wall to get the pump output line outside and trenched the line about 40 feet into the yard where they dug a dry well.
Then the finish work: mixing concrete and covering over the drain pipe in the basement. When they finished it was almost as though they hadn't been there. The basement looked as good as before; the yard (and our new landscaping) was undisturbed.
What I especially liked was the things they did to go over and above--things I wouldn't have thought to ask about: they removed a couple of brick columns along the wall that were leftover from now removed waste lines; they added two access drain lines tied into the main system for things like a dehumidifier.
I am very satisfied with all of their work--I definitely got my money's worth. So far, we have a dry basement.
From start to finish the work was top notch! Doug, the owner, came to give us an estimate and he was very knowledgeable and very mater of fact about the work that had to be done, the time it would take and the pricing was totally transparent, based
on the size of our basement and the work we needed to have done.
We scheduled a date, gave him a small deposit and everything went verysmoothly. A few days before the start date for the project we got a call from, Louie, the A-1 Director of Operations. Louie reviewed everything for the project; start time, number of days it would take, etc. And the crew arrived as scheduled. They were knowledgeable, friendly and very polite. The Foreman reviewed everything with me again before they started and they worked quickly and relatively quietly, given the nature of the work. They cleaned up everything really well, and I suspect the basement floor was cleaner when they finished than it was when they arrived.
I would recommend A-1 Basements and I would use them again, however, based on the workmanship I?m assuming we won?t need basement waterproofing again!! At least not for this house!
I?ll check back in after the next big rain and let you know how everything is working.

Good, but they could have done more of a clean-up. The salesman promised a bit more than the crew knew about other patchwork.

We just had the drainage system installed in our house. It was a bid job and took about a week to complete. Doug was very nice and gave a reasonable estimate. His team came in on time every day and worked well. Hopefully the basement is waterproofed and we will know more when we get a rain storm. My only complaint is about the cleanliness. We were told that all of our stuffed will be covered during the demo and place will be left broom clean. Well during the demo non of our items were covered and there are layers of dust which need to be cleaned now. The guys picked up big debris and cleaned the visible areas but we are still cleaning debris which went under our items and lots of small rocks. Lastly instead of paying them for sheet rock get a handy man to do it. A1 installed the sheet rock and we had to get the spackle right and sanded afterwards.

I initially met with Doug on Wed July 17 to get an estimate and to test the water pressure to make sure that the system would work. Doug was very professional, courteous and explained everything to me. When he left he told us that his plumbing sub-contractor would install the pump the following thursday and the plumber would call us directly to schedule a time. The plumber never called, but showed up on Thursday unannounced at 8am. He told us he was very busy and was just dropping off the pump and would come back on saturday to install it. He was supposed call to schedule a time but once again he never called, and this time he didn't show up either. I called Doug to see what had happened. Doug immediately got the subcontractor on the line and we rescheduled for the following tuesday. Doug told me to call his office to confirm the appointment and I did but requested to get a call back or email back to confirm a time so that somebody would be home to let the plumber in. I believe it was an answering service that I left the message with, but I got no response.
On tuesday the plumber showed up at 8am again, unannounced again to install the pump. He was there for a few hours and ended up doing a solid job from what I can tell. He installed some additional piping and a check valve in the basement with the pump. Without filling up the pit, there isn't any way to test to see if the pump is working properly but I can hear water running through it when I lift the float so it seems to be in working order. I did notice a few days later that my sprinkler system wasn't working and realized that the plumber didn't turn a water valve back to its prior position to allow the water to flow to the sprinkler system. Probably just an oversight, but something important enought that the plumber should have realized.
Overall, the scheduling didn't go very smoothly, but the quality of the work was solid, price was reasonable, and Doug seems like an honest guy who tries to provide the best service to his customers possible. I would consider using A-1 in the future.
The owner Doug came for a quote and he was prompt, friendly, and helpful. The value was great for the work done and his crew really cleaned the basement. It actually has never been cleaner. Trop storm Andrea just hit and I don't see any water. I would definitely recommend them.
