The owner of A&G LawnCare, Jonathan Shaw, is a corrupt, incompetent con man. I hired him to fill a 450-ft long ditch on the side of my driveway with rocks. I told him that I wanted thick black plastic placed in the ditch first (to prevent weeds from growing), then the rocks placed on top of that. I informed him that I was retired and living on a fixed income so I needed the best deal he could give me. He came to my home and gave me an estimate of $2400. I asked him if that included the plastic, and he said it did. A couple of days later he arrived to start the project and asked for a payment of $1200 for that day’s work, which I gave him. About halfway through the day I went over to check on the progress and caught him placing the rocks in the ditch without first laying down the plastic. When I asked him why he was doing that he just shrugged and said matter-of-factly, “For $2400 you’re not getting plastic” - even though that’s what I was paying him to do! I told him it defeated the purpose to prevent weeds from growing, and asked him why he didn’t give me the option of paying more for the plastic rather than just dumping the rocks on bare dirt. He assured me that the plastic wasn’t necessary and that no weeds would grow there. I should have known at that point that he didn’t have a clue what he was doing. The following day when he came back I gave him a check for $1200, the balance of the $2400 estimate. Jonathan Shaw told me he underestimated the amount of rocks it was going to take and couldn’t finish the job for less than $2700. I was more than a little annoyed at this but had no choice but to pay him to finish it. Later that day he ran out of rocks AGAIN, with only half the project completed. He once again informed me that he couldn’t afford to finish the job because the $2700 I had given him wasn’t enough to cover the amount of rocks needed. He said he needed another $1000 if I wanted him to finish it. I had already paid this swindler $300 more than the estimate and now he was hitting me up for an additional $1000! At this point I just wanted the job finished and him off my property. I had to transfer what little money I had from my savings account into my checking account. I wrote him a check and he left for the day. The next day he completed about 80% of the job before once again running out of rocks! Now I was angry and told him that this was unacceptable. I informed him that I had no more money to spend on this project. He told me he would get back to me, then got in his truck and drove away. After he left I walked along the ditch and noticed literally hundreds of open spaces that weren’t covered by rocks. I also noticed that he caused major damage to my driveway with his vehicle, which he failed to tell me about. When I called him to inform him of this, he said he was in the middle of another project and would call me back. He never called me, and has not returned any of the voice mail messages I have left for him. My guess is that he blocked my number from his phone. Less than two weeks after Jonathan Shaw from A&G LawnCare was here, weeds were spreading throughout the ditch in the open spaces between the rocks. I had to spend more than $200 to have more rocks delivered in order to complete the last 20% of the ditch he left unfinished. I spent at least fours a day, every day, for two months (by myself), re-doing the incompetent job that A&G Lawncare did. I had to remove every rock by hand … then pull out all the weeds that had grown in the ditch after he left … then place black plastic down … and then finally place the rocks on top, one by one. I was only able to accomplish about 5-7 feet per day because it was backbreaking work (A lot of these rocks are over a foot in diameter and weigh more than 30 lbs). Original estimate by A&G LawnCare to do the project: $2400. The amount of money I have spent on this project: More than $4000. The estimate to repair the damage A&G LawnCare did to my driveway: $12,000. Jonathan Shaw, owner of A&G LawnCare, is nothing more than a fraud and a hustler. He grossly underestimated the cost of the job, he has no idea how to estimate the amount of materials needed for a project, he lied to me about the plastic not making a difference for weed control, he caused thousands of dollars worth of damage to my driveway, he left before the job was finished, and he refuses to return my phone calls. Not to mention that he has left me almost completely bankrupt. If after reading this review you are still considering hiring this scam artist, make sure you obtain a written QUOTE, not a verbal ESTIMATE of how much the job will cost. And before he starts the job, make sure he is licensed & bonded and agrees to pay for all the damage he WILL cause to your property.
