Unfortunately, our overall experience with AJ Hardwood Flooring was not good. The one saving grace is that the work was done quickly and they did come back to fix a few cracked tiles. There were several issues with: 1) communication; 2) professionalism; and 3) integrity. Communication When we initially asked for a quote on Angie’s List, we let the owner know, and I quote, “We currently have tile for all of the spaces. We can also purchase the bullnose, if necessary. We do not have grout or other material.” Despite this communication, when they showed up on the first day to do work, I was told that she was under the impression that we had grout and other materials and that the price quoted did not include those materials. Though I believed that I was clear about the materials we had, we agreed to split the cost for the additional materials and that receipts would be provided. I let the owner know that I have no experience with tiling and there were several occasions when there was little or no communication. On the afternoon that the tile was laid, I was told that it needed to set overnight and that we needed to gather items we needed from each of the areas within the hour—more notice would’ve been appreciated. I was also not told that tile would be placed directly on the linoleum and no thin set would be laid in the areas with linoleum. I found out that this can cause issues in the future and the best practice is to remove linoleum and lay a thin set. Professionalism After asking for the grout to be matched with the existing tile grout in the master bath, white grout was placed in the bathroom. This makes the room look incongruous and when I asked if anything can be done I was told that nothing can be done to fix this. Instead, the owner said that she told me that most people use white when I initially asked her what her recommendation for the grout color (despite the fact that I explicitly asked for the grout to be matched in the master bedroom and discussed how I chose a tile that is very similar to the existing tilework). The lack of professionalism didn’t end there-- when I brought up issues like the carpet not being cut evenly or symmetrically across the door frame, cracked tiles, the white grout, and gaps in the caulking, I was met with excuses and justifications instead of solutions. Thus, I researched and offered solutions and had to show them specific places where there were gaps in the grout (instead of them doing quality check). Also, when I mentioned that there were some cracked tiles, I was told that someone must’ve walked on the floor (after blaming, they did fix the tiles). The floors were also left with the grout haze, dirt, and debris. Integrity When the work was completed, I was told that the additional materials amounted to $700, with our half being $350. This was surprising because before we agreed to split the cost, I asked for a ball park price and was told that it would be between $400-$500 total and we would split that cost. When I asked for the promised receipts, the owner gathered up some crumpled receipts from the car. Because the receipts included unrelated purchases and unrelated receipts, I spent 45 minutes to 1 hour itemizing the receipts and calculating the total. After calculating the total and reviewing with the owner the price was close to $400 (which included a $30 bag of concrete for which there was no receipt because we did not want them to bear that cost alone despite not having a receipt). The fact that the promised receipts weren’t provided and the price I was told was over $150 above the actual cost lacked integrity. Conclusion Overall, the work is passable and was finished quickly; however, we’re not satisfied. Instead of matching grout, we have white and tan grout in the master bedroom. I asked the owner if this could be fixed and she said no. After researching online, I found out that we can stain the grout (this was not told to us by the owner). We will be spending time and money staining the grout so that it matches with the existing tile’s grout. Because the process was not smooth, we paid more than the quoted price, and we will be spending time and money to fix the grout, we would not hire again or recommend.
