At first, they appear professional and nice. We explained that we pay half of the bid in advance, and the remainder on completion. We set expectations to both that three previous contractors had asked us to please release funds early and then did not return and that we wanted them to understand that we don't do that any longer if that was a desire. Both represented they were highly experienced in hanging kitchen cabinets and crown molding. i engaged them to clean the debris from my yard and paid a 50% bonus to them which I did not have to do. Point; we're fair and reasonable. Within 48 hours Al was begging for the remainder of the money promising he'd show back up. We told him how sorry we were but to finish the work and we'd release. Al refused to show back up taking other jobs. Al finally sent an emotionally charged text saying that we refused to do a favor for him (paying him in advance for work not done) and how dare we, etc. and wanted to know what was left. In looking, we determined that they do NOT have experience -- the wrong screws were used, directions were not followed and the crown molding is a complete disaster. There are no mitered edges and the crown is over 1.5" from the ceiling - they had no knowledge of what crown molding is for ... despite having instructions, our having existing crown, and contending they were highly experienced. The pictures are worth a thousand words. It appears someone who had never seen crown molding before tried to put it up. The wrong people get in business and these are they. Please please please get references and confirm that what you want done is actually something they know how to do. The hysterical emotional outburst from Al was enough of a red flag for us to realize we had been taken advantage of ... again.
