I have been looking for a reliable, competent, professional handyman for years and at long last am happy to report that I found Chuck at American HandyWorks. He has all these qualities and more. I purchased a large pedestal mailbox that needed to be assembled and installed on the cement walkway at my front porch. Chuck answered my call and agreed to stop by the same day on the way back from another appointment to take a look at the job. He arrived exactly when he said he would, quoted a fair and reasonable price and scheduled to come back the next morning to do the work. Again, he arrived on time, with all the necessary hardware and tools to do the job. He worked quickly and efficiently and knew what he was doing. No fuss, no muss. The job was completed quickly and perfectly. He also was kind enough to help me remove a stubborn fluorescent fixture cover that I had been unable to detach. Chuck is courteous and friendly and I will have no hesitation in calling him again when the need arrives. I was happy to learn that, as a licensed contractor, he is also available to handle much larger projects than the one I had. Thank you, Chuck, and thanks to Angie’s List for helping me find him.

Tiles are off and not even, there are gabs between the tiles and he added a very piece of wood to cover the area where the tiles and laminates meet almost a 2" step the kitchen cabinets are still not completely fixed, he asked not to step on the tiles (so not to check the cabinets) he placed a piece of dry wood over the mold under the sink ne never picks up my calls and his text said ( need a 6 month break because of a vertigo) nothing was done right and yet, he is not welling to fix it. I am taking him to court.

"[Member Name Removed] seemed to be pleased when she paid me in full on the day i finished, she was there in the full light of day and approved everything, i had to wait a week to finish up because she had no money she borrowed from her mom, and finally paid so she had a week to once again look at the work. I did return to address her concerns but was run out by a hostile man who I had never seen and had no idea of what the original agreement was between [Member Name Removed] and myself. the work was completed on time on budget, and their was no health or safety issues brought to my attention on pay day."

Mr. Hill was able to visit my home quickly and provide to me a fair estimate. For the day of service, he arrived on time, had the necessary tools & material to repair my fence, and completed the repairs. He was professional and my fence looks fine. I would definitely hire Chuck Hill again.

I am very pleased. Chuck was able to come out within a day or two of calling him. I had three signs for "park at your own risk/HOA not responsible" mounted on cinder block, and four signs "under 24 hr video surveillance", with two mounted on doors an done afixed to the outside of the garage entry gate. He showed up when he said he would, and finished job in less than an hour. I will definitely keep Chuck in mind for other handyman tasks around our condo.

I called Chuck and he was able to fit me in on the same day!!! What service :) He was professional, polite and efficient. He had to take the door off the hinges and shave down the bottom of the door slightly. He got the door back in place and it works great. I'd definitely hire him again for other projects.

Chuck is great! He's completely prompt and reliable and really knows his stuff. We have really old, weird door hardware and hinges that needed to be repaired (ideally) or replaced (if necessary, but not my first choice). He took a quick look -- where others had turned them over and over before declaring it couldn't be done-- and had them fixed and reinstalled within a couple of hours. He's a handyman in the truest sense of the word-- he thinks his way around the corners of problems and just figures out how to get the job done without fanfare. We also described to him the kind of baking sheet storage we wanted, and he built it using the materials on hand. Same with the closet vent! He's not the cheapest, but he's so fast and knowledgeable that you shouldn't let that deter you from hiring him. It all evens out, and the job will be done right. Bonus! His truck storage is truly amazing. If your job requires a part that he has, you'll get a chance to see 8 ft long drawers filled with every kind of thingamabob you can imagine.

Excellent. Chuck Hill is one of those rare multi-talented, multi-skilled craftsman who tackled whatever I gave him quickly, flawlessly and at a very fair price. He's also a very nice guy who was very sweet to our 3 year old who loved watching him work!

Chuck was great at showing up and getting things done. There were times he couldn't get into the places he needed to, but he always figured out how to work around our chaos. He made use of his time.

Updated as of 01/21/2017: Please note that the pics attached are of the FINAL work. You don’t need to read my entire review. Look at the pics and decide for yourself if you would contract this person. There are no sour grapes here, only facts. In addition to the poor work done, the shelf he installed broke within weeks because of poor attention to detail. Months later now, additionally all the caulking dried and must be redone as he used the cheapest materials he could find. Do not hire this person, there are too many good people out there to risk using him.

I was hesitant to review Charles' work as I don't like to negatively impact someone's livelihood, but his incredible lack of professionalism, lazy attention to detail and rudeness were so shocking I felt it my responsibility to warn others, regardless of how stellar his other reviews seem to be.

His temper also took me aback, when a situation he caused with my neighbor escalated quickly into his dropping F bombs at her, forcing me to jump between the two to keep the peace and get the job done already. The job was simple - Over a couple days, I needed a sink installed, an outlet moved, and a custom shelf built over a washer and dryer. Charles showed up on time, did the work requested, though as it progressed through the day I found an unsettling lack of attention to detail which needed to be corrected, which seemingly he would have been fine with (shelf cut to wrong size, sink not square to wall). Mid-project, he spilled paint in my garage, which he dutifully cleaned. The problem was his solution for cleanup was to dump the paint onto the townhouse public area lawn, understandably much upsetting the neighbor. He did his best to clean up that new mess, but rather than be apologetic for his lapse in judgment he argued with her, raising his voice, dropping F bombs, and leaving me to deal with a justifiably furious neighbor.

Once the job was done, he rushed out the door for his vacation. Before he left I saw he didn't do any cleanup - sanded dust coating all surfaces, dirty footprints, dirty sink and cabinet - but I knew he was in a rush and it didn't seem like that big a deal for me to clean on my own. I did note he made no mention about it, but I let that go. Clearly I should have inspected his final work more closely, as after he left and I moved away the paint cans to sweep up the mess, I saw he didn't finish the job. Those pics are attached, also showing the mess he left for me. This was his idea of a completed job.

I immediately called him, and he asked if he could finish the job when he returned from vacation in a couple weeks. Though not the ideal solution for me, I didn't want to be inconsiderate to his vacation rush, and I'd just wait. What surprised me further was to find a large box of all the demolished materials waiting for me in the garage, necessitating two trips to the dump.

Shortly after, the shelf he installed cracked, with no weight or abuse. That pic is also attached. When I sent the pic to him, he was surprised and told me he would charge another $100 to fix and that it was "obviously broken" and it didn't break itself, and that it's kind of strange, implying I broke the shelf and it is my responsibility rather than his poor design/construction/materials. At this point, he refused to return to fix what he called "a debatable repair" and he'd only do it if I rolled it into other work. Giving him more work would show poor judgment as he had not yet completed the original work.

We agreed on a return date to finish the original job. Charles showed up on time, was polite, and went into the bathroom to do the job. On inspection, his fix was slipshod, the sanding minimal to nothing, more paint on the cabinet, the painting incomplete, paint dripping down the wall, black footprints, dirt in sink. He didn't even bother to close the paint can. When I pointed this out to him, he scoffed, ignored my request to do a better fix, looked at my 7-year-old, laughed and walked out.

Through all this, I had been discussing with him the possibility of redoing the kitchen, not a huge makeover, but at about 15 grand not a small piece of change, either. Even after dealing with the lack of attention to detail and his improper response to the neighbor, had he returned to my house to finish the work, actually DO the work, and find some manner of appropriate understanding of satisfying a client, I STILL would have considered awarding the project to him. However, after his "fix" and cavalier attitude that was so rude even my 7-year-old noted it, there can be no possibility of contracting him again. I'm sure he knew that, as while I was mid-sentence telling him "I don?t think I'm asking anything unreasonable," he responded, "No, you probably aren't," laughed and walked out the door.

I had been nothing but gracious, polite, flexible with schedule, and conciliatory with him. In return I am left with a sand and paint job I will just do myself, and another bill I must pay for the shelf that broke days after his installation.

"I never met [Member Name Removed], I guess it was her husband that I worked with everything was completed on time and on budget and he paid promptly, The other complaints are sour grapes the trouble arose when weeks later they had broken a section of counter top molding that I installed and wanted me to replace it Free, I declined but I did go by and did some touch up painting for free, their were painters out side painting the entire complex, I washed out my paint pan where they were also washing theirs far away from any residences no not on the lawn, and yes, someone complained. He knew there was a small box of trash in the garage and In my contracts it plainly states I dont haul trash. He was obviously happy enough with the bathroom to have me bid on the kitchen re model. When a house dad" stares at a laptop all day and giggles, His wife may not be giggling about anything or have approved his budget. and those pictures are not of the finished job Please Read the other reviews."

Chuck is a great guy. On time for bid and work, he can do anything. ? He repaired existing fence by moving boards and adding more, fixed my 2 gates as they were not opening and closing properly. ?Then power washed them and stained fences and gates. Everyone thinks the fence is brand new! He installed an exterior dryer vent in my garage and painted it to match the exterior. ?Then welded a beautiful metal hand rail and painted it bronze to match my front door!? We talked about building a mantel, and he did a mock up out of cardboard to show me scale, etc. ?Amazing!!? I AM SO HAPPY WITH HOW EVERYTHING TURNED OUT!!! ?Talented, nice?guy, you cannot go wrong.?

Chuck was one of the best contractors that we have worked with since buying our home about five years ago. He was very reliable and was always there on the days and times that we agreed. He accommodated our busy schedules and was able to come out in between our various appointments, out-of-town trips, etc. We agreed up front on an hourly rate plus materials. He completed the list of tasks each time he came out in a very efficient manner and was able to work quickly through the list of items. I felt the overall price was very fair especially given the high quality of his work, his efficiency in completing the jobs and the excellent end results. Another important item for us was general care and neatness. Chuck always left a clean job site at the end of the day and he was very careful not to leave paint/caulk drips or any other marks/damage to the house. You can tell right away with Chuck that he is a professional that takes pride in completing a well done job. He is a true craftsman. I would say that he is highly skilled in repairs and maintenance and he was able to find and implement solutions to all of our problems. On top of everything else, Chuck is a great person that both my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know. We will definitely use him in the future for any and all of our home repair and maintenance items. We were extremely satisfied with his work and felt that finding him was another big positive and strong reason why we continue to use Angie's List.

Chuck was awesome. My kitchen faucet broke this morning, so I called Chuck and he came over a couple hours later. He assessed the situation, and we looked at faucets together at home depot online. After we picked one, he ran up to home depot to pick it up, then came right back to install it. He was quick, efficient, and friendly, and the price was very fair. I will absolutely call Chuck in the future.
