We consider ourselves fortunate to have found this company since after a big storm it can be difficult to even get anybody to come out and give you an estimate. Mike returned our calls promptly, showed up when he said he would, did an excellent job for a fair price and on top of all that is a nice guy. What more could one ask for in a contractor? Just 3 days after the new roof was completed an even bigger hurricane (Matthew) hit. A few shingles on the northeast side that had not yet had a chance to fully cure in the heat of the sun were blown off but Mike came right out and took care of it. We definitely will use American Home Improvement and Remodeling again and in fact have already scheduled some deck repair for this spring.

Constant follow up was required to get Mr. Radan to start and complete the work. He would promise to be back on a certain date, and he'd fail to show. When the work was done several of the railings appeared to be unstable, and I was concerned that when people leaned on them that they might give way. When I pointed that out to Mr. Radan, he agreed and promised to be back to reinforce the railings. That was over a year ago. He has not responded to texts, phone calls or emails.

Just as soon as Michael Radan received my deposit, he scheduled my job. He was clear to me that he was very busy and that if I wanted to get on his schedule, I needed to pay a deposit immediately otherwise he would not be able to schedule my job. I gave him my deposit and i was scheduled, He sent me pictures since I was not local. He did a good job at power washing the area but that was it. I contracted to have my front porch painted white with the rusty nails sealed with rust bullet under the paint and to have my deck gates repaired. Michael Radan said no problem, he was a master carpenter and could fix the deck gates. It was easy to have the front porch painted but the rusty nails still showed through the new paint after a couple days of painting. This was after Michael Radan guaranteed that he would apply rust bullet to the nails and that would take care of the issue. And the master carpenter woodworker did not fix the sagging gates. Needless to say, the work was sub standard. When confronting Michael Radan, he did not go out and investigate for himself but simply said when are you coming down to the house and we can review the work at that time. i realized I had contracted a sub-standard place of business. I would not recommend this business as in hindsight, he was only interested in getting the check. I even sent him a picture of the rusted nails after the paint job and he would not go out to investigate and repair.
Response from American Home Improvements & Remodeling
"Hi Everyone I was contracted to Paint [Member Name Removed] front Porch and repair his gates. I advised him that the best stuff on the market was RustBullet to apply to rusted nails. Then, prime & paint his front porch. I cant guarantee that stuff because we live on the Outerbanks (salt water, electrolosis etc..., That's why all vessels have Zinc attached to the metal components. So they don't rust) Sometimes when water based paint is used, (Behr, which has been rated the #1 paint for the last 5 years or so and I highly recommend) nails after being painted will expose themselves. I did go by there and in fact, one nail head did do this. Also his gates were falling apart in which I recommended he replace but, he just wanted me to put new hardware on them. If your able to see the address above, please go there and check for yourself. The front porch glows! From what I understand, [Member Name Removed] home has been on the market for several years and he may of hoped by hiring me before a potential home buyer was to meet w the realtor that in doing this, might solve all his problems. He's upset w the world it seems and I understand his frustration. I started the job immediately and was done in 2 days. He was there right after I finished and chose to email me right after he left???? I asked him why he didn't call me while he was in town. He never responded. Now this. His house does look nice and I don't understand why it hasn't sold yet cause other homes all around him have been sold. In our initial phone conversations, I told him just the gates needed to be replaced. He insisted that we do the front porch? What does this have to do w/ me claiming to be a "Master Carpenter" on my web page?? I am a Master Carpenter. I have schooling and on the job 30+ years to prove it. 20,000 plus pics in my gallery. [Member Name Removed] himself seems to have an Identity crisis. I take this stuff very personal. I believe I have one of the best jobs on the planet. Again, I tried to decipher what his motive was, cause he has a right to voice his opinion but, after reading it over and over, I sensed immaturity and frustration stemming from not being able to sell his home and a "nanny nanny poo poo mentality" when it came to the Master Carpenter thing??? Social media is good sometimes but, this time it has reared its ugly head. I just cant believe how someone is allowed to just say what ever they want w/out any proof what so ever. I have before and after pics of his project so, if anyone wants to see them whether they want my services or not, I'll send them for your viewing. I've never imposed or rushed anyone's decision to hire me for a project. He's the one that pushed me to starting immediately?? I can't believe him!! W/ all the hackers down here and most of them working for the Rental agencies (I said most, not all) There's no shortage of work for me. I don't say this in an arrogant manner but, I am very grateful for what I have been blessed w/ and again, I take this very personal. Please go to [Member Information Removed] in Kitty hawk. If his address and name are redacted, after I post this, then, anyone who is on this site and any other site similar to this one are open game to the frustrations of disgruntled home owners! Please call me if you have concerns, and if your in town, I will personally take you by any property where I've performed work. For him and any other project you may be interested in. Thank you, Michael Radan"

Very reliable Contractor. HONEST, TRUSTWORTHY, sends pictures of Work PROGRESS, We live FAR from Kill Devil Hills so having a contractor like this means the world to us. HE has worked for us now for 25 YEARS. If you are wondering what kind of work this man does just drive by 1717 Bay Dr. KDH. He oversees Electrical work, plumbing work, a new concrete drive way, & Checks on our place. Keeps a key to our place. Michael is THE MOST DEPENDABLE CONTRACTOR at the OBX !!! If he does not do a good job for you I'll EAT MY HAT !!! HE IS A JACK OF ALL TRADES!

Things did not go well, resulting in my overall rating of D. I would not recommend this contractor. I met Michael Radan (principal) at the home around Thanksgiving 2015 after finding him on Angie's List. He was one of a few painting contractors that I interviewed and I selected him based on a competitive (not lowest) price, and his reviews on Angie's List (mostly A's at the time). He promised to begin prep work immediately and paint the exterior of my home after I selected paint. I did tell him that getting the job done sooner was certainly better than later, but that the rental season was largely over so time was not absolutely paramount. I knew he might run into some weather issues given the late date. He reported in December (along with a request for payment for Work In Progress) that he was 90% done with the job. He finally finished the project in late April 2016 after much prodding by me. Positives- Michael is a nice enough guy. He thanked me when I did something for him, such as make a payment or reimburse him for expenses. He was never disrespectful. He helped me work through an issue with the home owner's association when they initially rejected the paint color I selected. I was not on site and he negotiated with them to get what approvals I needed. That was over and above what was expected in the project. Negatives - Michael over promises and underdelivers. It would appear that he and his crews will power spray everything - minimal use of brushes. There was overspray over everything. There are many areas that will require caulking, which should have been addressed prior to painting. I found him to be dishonest, specifically when it came to requesting payment. In early April he texted me to request final payment for the project (after I had paid 75% of the project during its duration). I asked my rental management company to drive by and verify that the work was complete. It was not, and they sent me photos of his crews still working. He requested payment again a couple days later. The rental management company again reported that the work was not done, and the work site was not cleaned up. With me not being on site, I suspect he was also dishonest earlier in the year when he claimed to be 90% complete, and in need of additional payment in December. I was disappointed when I came to visit the project site after completion. I spent days addressing the following: - I had to clean up hundreds of staples and nails that were used to support plastic sheeting he had used while power spraying. They were rusting all over the concrete and decks. - The was overspray on the concrete, windows, decorative rock, trash cans, hoses, deck furniture, doors, foliage, entryway mats - you name it. I used razor blades to clean off windows, I trimmed back the foliage, and fixed what I could. - There were signs for the house that were removed during painting. I had to put those back. - There was a sign by the pool warning of various dangers. This was not replaced and I had to put it back. - There were hammocks/swinging chairs that had to be removed during painting and I had to put those back in place. - In exchange for honoring his Angie's List discount, he offered to repair screens in an outdoor screened porch. He left that job incomplete and I had to put new screen on the door and replace the door on its hinges. - There was tape and plastic on a number of exterior items, used to protect them while power spraying. I finished the removal of these. Additionally: The timing of the project was certainly a negative. He started in November and ended in late April. While it didn't impact rentals, it got kind of ridiculous. He blamed it on the weather, but clearly he had issues retaining a crew to do the work. It would appear that the crew he did retain was not terribly experienced and/or paying attention to detail. The house was power sprayed prior to painting, which was to help with paint adherence. After months of ocean spray, I'm sure the performance of the paint will suffer. He gave me an estimate of the amount of paint that would be needed. That was exceeded (required an additional order) by around 10%, and I suspect that was largely due to the liberal use of power sprayers by novice painters. That was a significant cost overrun. He does not keep track of expenses adequately. He scanned many of them at the end of the project, not as they were incurred, and reported that several had been lost but he wanted reimbursement based on memory.

"This is what happens when I'm not able to defend myself. We were supposed to replace a few pieces of hardi plank siding around pool unless excessive. Well, every time I started to remove a piece the siding would crumble. I told him I would have to charge if we were to address any further. The same thing w The screens on his house. That wasn't even in the contract but, I rescreened his whole porch for free because of the delay (it nearly rained every day if it wasn't freezing then, the Ocean mist would come in around 2 pm and drip any paint that hadn't dried so, we were stuck w that dilemma) which I wasn't stuck w any thing. It was something we always have to deal w down here. So, the rental agency or [Member Name Removed] removed all the screens from the home and thought I was supposed to replace them? The job was more than 90% done and I didn't ask him for any money that wasn't due. This is just crazy stuff. This is a culmination of 2 disagreements and a pen in one's hand The Job is beautiful and finished and if someone wants pics or have me take them to the address, I would be more than happy to Thank you, Mike"

I would not recommend this company. After finishing the job he sent pictures of areas that had no issues and by chance someone we know looked at the paint job and told me there was paint sprayed on the concrete, decking and bushes and that the overall work was not great. I told Michael this and I said would not pay the rest owed to him until the job was done right and the areas where the paint was not suppose to be was cleaned up. I also said I would have someone check it before I would pay him in full. We do not live near the job site so relied on people we trust to inspect the job done He did not like that answer and texted very inappropriate text messages that were very threatening and hostile in nature.
"We did an excellent job. The truth is, she couldn't afford to pay. W the fact that her house is falling apart cause she cant afford to maintain speaks volumes. I was always nice to her. She ignored my calls and texts, when I mentioned court, my phone started ringing. After we were finished, we never went back because it was completely done. Amazingly, someone had approved everthing w flying colors. What a lot of homeowners don't understand is that the rental agencies are my competition. If you ever want to drive by her home, the job I did for her, handrails pool fence & roof (yes she hired me over and over again, is the only thing holding up the house. All her siding is rotting off the house asis her trim. Once you see that, you understand where i'm coming from. She did pay me finally, and said she'll never hire me again. LOL!. I think it was when I told her that she didn't have the money to pay me. That sent her off in a different direction. I've never dealt w a situation like this and all she had to do was make payments. Instead, she blew it all out of proportion"

From the very first contact I made with Michael, he demonstrated expert knowledge of structural roofing repair and home improvement projects. He was very professional in his work and interactions with me. As soon as I called him, he spent at least 30 minutes speaking with me concerning his work experience and discussing the project that I was seeking assistance with. He quickly arranged to meet me at the home at a time convenient for me even though it meant close to an hour drive for him on a weekend. He was transparent in his business transactions, fairly estimating the cost of the project and providing documentation of costs. At each stage of this project, which involved demolition and rebuilding of the carport roof, Michael kept me updated via phone calls, text messages and email. He was very accommodating in doing additional work that I requested. He and his crew cleaned up the work area outside the home at the end of each day. The finished project was great. To say that I was pleased and satisfied with the work he performed on the home would be an understatement. Honest, reliable, hardworking, Michael was the consummate professional.
The tile work was using travertine natural stone with a lot of high end detail. The price shown was labor only I provided all of the materials as I wanted a higher quality of stone than could be purchased in the Outer Banks. Michael did an outstanding job. In fact my husband commented that he had never seen such perfect grouting on a listello before. He removed all of the old stuff and no damage to the house although there was a lot of tile dusts use to it being natural stone. My only issue was that the job took longer than either he or I anticipated. I wish I had given him a absolute need by finish date before starting. I would have Michael back for sure and would highly recommend him! Lisa
We purchased a second home in North Carolina a few years ago. Unfortunately, what we could afford required quite a bit of work. Given that the second home was 6 hours from our primary residence, we knew we needed a contractor that we could trust to perform the numerous improvements this house desperately needed. Not being familiar with any contractors in North Carolina, I started my search with Angie's list. What immediately drew me to American Home Improvement was the fact that the owner, Mike Radan, not only had an A-list rating and many rave reviews, but that he had been in business for 30 years. Before we even purchased the house we wanted estimates for what we likely needed to spend in the immediate future. Our timing was bad in that the area had recently experienced a hurricane. When I called Mike he said he would be happy to provide me estimes but asked if it was ok if he got back to me in a few days because he was busy making post-hurricane repairs for his existing customer base. I respected that he was honest in setting my expectations but also that he was taking care of his loyal customers first. I am now proud to be on that list and Mike has recently helped me with two priority "damsel in distress" moments that as luck would have it, no one else was around to assist. Premiere customer service aside, Mike's craftsmanship and attention to detail are superior. Although we were not onsite to supervise during many of the improvements, Mike sent pictures and emailed or texted updates daily, it really felt as if we were there. Just the other day, when Mike was helping me with an emergency, I apologized as he was leaving for having to call him out after he had already been working that day. He responded with "absolutely no problem, you're family now", and that's exactly how it feels. If Mike is not too busy with the additional influx of work resulting from this glowing review, I have a long list of additional improvements I would like to have done this Summer! I would recommend Mike to anyone.
Michael Radan's professionalism and attention to detail is why we continue to contract him. His expertise in all areas of remodeling allows the design to flow and evolve throughout the renovation. Not just a contractor building to spec, Michael makes recommendations during the process, providing daily digital photos and calling with updates. Living 300 miles away from the investment property, and not always able to be on site, this personal touch allows us the ability to react on the fly with changes, if necessary, until project completion.
We scheduled the work late and asked Mike if he could finish before our daughter came in mid July . He said he thought so if the weather cooperate. Mike had the work about 50% completed when Hurricane Arthur made land fall in the outer banks. Mike restarted work on Sunday after the Hurricane (stain application was next and the Cedar had to dry). the job was completed in plenty of time for my daughter's visit.
Quality of the work was excellent, everything was completed and look good. He even power washed our front steps.

I was quite pleased with the outcome. The job did not start or end on schedule as the spring storms pushed other jobs out, however Mike did send one of his crew down to get started at the end of the original start week and he managed the weather effectively. We agreed at the outset that the drop dead date for completion was mid-May and that time frame was met. He wasn't the cheapest and that isn't my main criteria for selecting a partner.
The quality of the job was very good upon completion but the real test will be 6 months to a year from now. I believe Mike will stand behind any issues that surface as he was very proactive throughout the process. He was very helpful in pointing out areas needing attention in another job which was being conducted and offering assistance when possible.
With work interrupted several times by prolonged periods of rain, they made sure that the equipment was stowed or immobilized each day so that I did have an eye sore to stare at until they returned. Communication was good throughout the process via text so I knew when the wind was going to lay down enough for them to get up on the ladders.
More importantly, Mike was positive in his approach and attitude, it was a pleasure to deal with him. At the end of the day, the variability of the work by any of the companies would likely have been pretty close, but I enjoyed working with Mike, he made me laugh, helped me consider other options and set my mind at ease that I wouldn't be repeating this exercise in 3 years. And if I am - then his company will be around and assist in mitigating the problem.

"[Member name removed] was a really great guy to work for.We did have a lotta laughs and stories to tell. I usually don't travel to Avon to work (75 m from home) but he liked my reviews he said. I had no control over punctuality because the State from Oregon inlet bridge to Salvo is a constant struggle of bumper to bumper traveling cause of constant sand shifts and bridge repairs. Always took us 2-3 hours one way. So traveling time was 4-6 hours daily commute. Getting a B was nice for price review. Next time i'll probably get an F if I have to travel down there while they are working on the Bridge. (Just kidding) Hope to work w/ [Member name removed] in future. :)"

When we came down to look at the floor, there was a gap. I told him about the gap that needed to be filled in or replaced. That was a year ago. I called him 4 times in that year. He said he would be by. He never did come by. About two weeks ago, I reminded him it had been a year and he had not come by to look at it. I told him this was the last time I will call you. He comes by and puts in some type of filler. It’s black and it shows up. At the end of all this he really didn’t care. He didn’t care if I was upset or concerned about it. I felt like I got him in good faith to do that and he just did not come through at all.

Mike did a great job. We started the process at the end of 2013, but with the bad weather over the winter the project took longer than anticipated. Mike kept me up to speed on the work on a daily basis since I am out of town and sent pictures during the project. All the punchlist items were handled with no problems. The house looks better than it ever has and I have received numerous compliments. I would recommend Mike and his team to anyone.
