A Plus Petrich Painting

Ryan Petrich, owner of Petrich Painting and Remodeling did an amazing job of refinishing our kitchen cabinets. A previous contractor?s inept attempt to refinish our cabinets left them in terrible shape. Ryan saved the cabinets by meticulously stripping and <br /> preparing them before he applied multiple coats of dark oak stain and lacquer, transforming them into absolutely beautiful pieces of wood. He is a perfectionist and it shows in the finished project. Ryan is very much like an artist, truly becoming ?one with the wood.? Ryan also did a great job of painting our kitchen afterwards to beautifully match the newly refinished cabinets.  Additionally, his suggestion to replace our antiquated florescent lighting fixture with five recessed can lights not only ?opened up? the feel of our kitchen, but also provided a softer illumination that highlighted the beauty of the cabinet?s wood grain.  We will be using Ryan again for our future home renovation projects. His prices are extremely fair and he is easy to communicate with. We highly recommend him. <br /> <br /> <br />

The experience was a disaster from start to his non-finish. Ryan Petrich originally got a 50% deposit on early July 2012 to start work on July 16th for what he said was a 4 day job.  He did not show up on the 16th and I had to call him to find out he was not even planning on showing up.  Then he agreed he  was going to start on Wednesday the 18th - my husband  took a day off of work to be here for that - he did not show up and did not call.  So on Thursday, July 19th he came after 1 pm.  He collected a check, tore up the kitchen counter tops rendering the kitchen unusable and then left.    On Friday he did not show up so I called.  He said he had to sleep and was not coming.  So the week he had scheduled to do the work came and went with virtually no work finished. <br /> So the next week we hired somebody to be home for him to work - and you know what? He did not show up at the agreed upon time. He came very late and left very early.   We paid for somebody to be there for him to work fewer than 3 hours per day. <br /> That brings us to the week of July 30th when he showed up late and left after a couple of hours each day -  getting virtually nothing done.  And since he told us he would be working that week - I was a virtual prisoner in my own house every day waiting for him to get there to work - well that was for the entire job.   He was completely disrespectful of my time, and I had to be phoning and texting him constantly to find out when and if he was going to be here.  And we were without a kitchen. <br /> So the next week - based on his lack of punctuality and commitment to our job - we refused to hire somebody to be here since neither of us could so he did not work.  We thought this might give him a chance to catch up on all of the other things he was doing that seemed to be interrupting our job.  Sadly - that was not so.  <br /> That brings us to the week of August 13th - and he signed an agreement that he would prime and paint on Monday, glaze on Tuesday, and finish on Wednesday.  (We did not know at that time that three days was not nearly enough time for him to finish). He did not show up until after lunch on Monday, he spent 3 hours preparing to prime and paint, then he left.  He came on Tuesday after 10 am. He argued with the carpenter he hired to build a new cabinet and left saying he had to go take care of paying him before doing anything else (which he did not do - we had to eventually pay the carpenter ourselves because we did not want a lien on the house).   On Wednesday he arrived late again, stayed fewer than 3 hours, and left saying he would be back.   He did not come back.  On Thursday I told him to be here by 7:30 or not to bother.  I had a seminar to go to. that day for work  I was willing to forgo the seminar if he had been punctual - but he was not.  On Friday he showed up at 7:30 am - but only because we told him not to come unless he came on time.  Keep in mind we've been out of a kitchen a month by this point and he has finished virtually nothing.  He did not want to work on Saturday.   He showed up on Sunday but was not at all committed to working on our project.  He played on his computer, texted, talked on the phone , etc.   At 6 pm on that Sunday he was not even close to being finished with the work. <br /> We agreed to allow him to come Sunday, August  26th but only if he arrived at 7:30 am. It was after 7:30 am when he called from his house over an hour away to say he was on his way.  We fired him then and there.  We were without a kitchen at that point for 7 weeks.  On that day my husband and spent the entire day trying to clean paint, primer, etc off of places it should not have been.  The kitchen was a complete mess.  The wall paint was splattered with cabinet paint.  The wall paint was all over the ceiling.  There was paint, primer, and other stuff on the floors, windows, and screens. <br /> We had to have another paint contractor come in.  At first he said he did not fix do-it-yourself disasters - which is what he deemed our mess.  When we showed him Ryan's contract - he felt very bad for us.  And that was just the start of the bad news he gave us.  Ryan used exterior house paint on our cabinets.   It is entirely the wrong thing to use on cabinets.  And he claimed he put three coats on at once - also a very bad thing.  The reason to put one coat on at a time is so that if the top coat chips you don't see the primer - and so that it dried properly.   This was 3 weeks after Ryan painted and the paint was still tacky everywhere.  And there were chips everywhere.  And he sat drawers wet from paint on other painted surfaces.  When the drawers were lifted off - they took giant splotches of paint with them.   <br /> This contractor had a crew of three professional painters (ones that did not use the phone while they painted or stood outside doing other things) work for two days  straight to try and  fix Ryan's mess.   Then we had the person who specializes in antiquing come and it took her another 4 days to do the antiquing and to seal the cabinets.  We hired the same carpenter to come install the hardware.  He and a helper spent another 2-3 full days putting the hardware on the cabinets.   And we had to pay thousands more for all of this work after paying Ryan virtually his entire contract. <br /> Ryan talked on his cell phone constantly - he even tried to paint and talk on the phone.  he spent more of his time standingt outside on the phone.  When we'd been without a kitchen 7 weeks and virtually noting was accomplished on our job - he brought his computer and set it up and worked on it instead of painting.   <br /> When we pulled up the paper that had been on the floor and appliances we discovered that he dinged the brand new stainless steel refrigerator.   We found water damage on floor in the shape of a paint can where he apparently left a paint can.  In other places on our wood floor the finish on floor bubbled peeled up.  When we had the counter tops installed we discovered that he took the yoke of newer garbage disposal - and there was not way to get a replacement yoke.  We had to buy a new disposal as well.  <br /> It's now been 3 months since Ryan painted 3 coats at one time.  There are still  paint chips leaving the primer showing everywhere - both because he used the wrong paint and because he did three coats at once.   We will be forever touching these up.  The paint is also tacky in places still.  And we will forever live with all of the places he just pained over dirt, dust, and trash. <br /> In short - if you want to spend weeks and weeks frustrated and end up with poor workmanship then hire Ryan.  If you want a professional and punctual painter - hire somebody else.   <br /> <br /> Update - January 9, 2013.  Ryan Petrich sent me mail on January 8, 2013, and threatened to place a lien on my house and other legal action if I did not remove my review.

Since the deck has deteriorated I have been very concerned that I cannot get in touch with him in order to resolve the problem. <br />

The tear down was done timely, and everything was left scrupulously clean. He did not perform any other work.

We signed the contract with Ryan on March 25th and the work had not been completed by July 25th (4 months later) when I started looking for a new contractor. <br /> <br /> The work started well and looked good.  Ryan's guys were quick and courteous.  As the project progressed, Ryan showed up less often and started not showing up when he said he would.  He'd give us dates for when things should be done, but they'd pass uncompleted.  In the end, the kitchen was mostly completed minus a little appliance installation work, but the bathroom was mainly undone.  He'd not installed the glass shower walls nor finished painting the walls of the bathroom.  We pressed him repeatedly on a completion date and he'd continually say that someone was coming.  No one did after several weeks and we realized that nothing was going to happen.  So, we decided to take our loss and move on since we couldn't completely live in our house with the unfinished work.  We hired a new contractor who has since finished the work. <br /> <br /> We got a call in August from the mason that supplied the granite and he stated that Ryan had not paid him.  The mason has since put a lien on our house to get payment and we're currently in litigation (November 13).

He was very cooperative, and worked around the clock to get the job done.  The workers were very courteous, we are very happy with the end product.

We agreed that the work would be done in a timely manner, and it was not.  I will not use him again.  I would tell anyone who was going to use him to pay him a minimal amount up front and tell him they will dock him for any time that he is late or doesn't show up that is not an act of God. <br /> <br /> If you want a clean and good paint job, I would be able to recommend him for that, and I do think his prices are reasonable.

Work started as planned but Ryan would disappear after 30 minutes or not show up at all (he had assured me he would be on site most of the time). A 3 week job turned into 6 weeks. Ryan had repeated "family emergencies" and would disappear a week at a time. His Mexican worker who could barely speak english cut corners at every opportunity. Ryan was not there to supervise most of the job. Ryan kept asking for more money as his "family emergencies" were costly. They patched the ceiling in the kitchen with a quarantee I would not be able to tell where the patch was. It now looks terrible and it is obvious it was patched. Ryan did not supervise the installation of the wood floors. It turns out that the floors were not installed to specification. This in effect has voided the warranty of the floors that cost $10,000. They are only 6 moths old and look terrible. I can not get warranty work because Ryan did not install them to "SPEC" and that voided the warranty. He guaranteed me a 5 year warranty on his work and now I am going to have to "SUE" him to get him to repair his mistakes. The paint job was suppose to be 2 full coats but it is obvious it is not. They tiled around the fireplace and it is uneven, unlevel and looks terrible. I paid Ryan to level and square all stair risers before installing wood and they now look terrible and are obviously not square or level. They did not use a vapor barrier on the concrete before installing wood over it and it turns out there was too much moisture in the concrete. They spaced nails on the second floor at 12-16 inches and the SPECS called for 8-10 inches. He assured me every thing would be installed correctly .... and I could depend on his warranty. Ryan is a very nice guy but should not be be trusted.  I am still waiting for him to make this right after 6 months. I will have to file a lawsuit to get any recourse unless Angies List Resolution Process is important to him. BEWARE!

The work went pretty good. There are just one or two things that we are still waiting for them to finish up. They were very good and meticulous. They would have been better if their timing was worked up better. They were supposed to finish the work by Saturday but ended up completing the work on a Wednesday. There was a little bit of delay but other than that they were pretty good.

We purchased our home our August 20th, 2010 and, being 16 years old, it needed some updating.  We actually met Mr. Petrich while we were having lunch with our real estate agent.  After he introduced himself, we made an appointment for him to come look at our home and give us an estimate.  After the estimate, we agreed to have our kitchen cabinets refaced and several rooms painted along with some crack repairs in the ceilings and also to put in a doggy door and hand rails.  The problems started as soon as the work began.  The day the work started, Mr. Petrich showed up with a couple of Mexican workers that did not speak much English.  After about 10 minutes, Mr. Petrich had left the workers on their own.  He had originally claimed that he did the work himself.  Long story short, we were very unhappy with our kitchen cabinets that they almost completely ruined with sanding against the grain leaving heavy scratches in the veneer.  We had to have someone else come in and completely redo everything on our kitchen cabinets.  We had stressed how important getting the hand rail in for our Grandfather was and that we also needed the doggy door put in before we moved into our home.  This never happened.  Mr. Petrich had one excuse after another for not showing up and not doing what he was hired to do.  We had to threaten to sue him to get our money back for our cabinets.  It took him six weeks to give us a full refund on the cabinets.  He did not complete the painting that needed to be done before we could move in and I had to hire someone else to finish it.  We had to put in the hand rail and doggy door ourselves.  I would not hire him to do another job.  I can not recommend him to anyone that I remotely liked.  Buyer beware!!  If you do use him, please don't make the mistake that we did by giving him too much money up front.

Rick responded promptly to my request for an estimate, and provided a very detailed outline of the costs and options.  He worked with me to come to a good price that was fair to all concerned, and I was able to get my kitchen cabinets refinished and painted when at first I didn't think I could swing it.  I appreciate that he worked with me on this.  Rick and I discussed different paint colors, qualities and characteristics of various paint types and finishes.  He left color charts and when I had chosen several possibilities, he brought samples by and painted swatches on the walls so I could make a final choice.  The following week,  his workmen came and worked constantly and continuously, and frankly didn't want to stop, but kept on working to get the job done. My walls had not been painted since construction (2004) so they were very dry and it took two to four coats of paint to cover the walls well.  His crew covered the floor with paper, covered the windows with glass, repaired paster when necessary, and painted, painted and painted.  The kitchen oak cabinets had badly mismatched wood colors, so i wanted them finished and painted.  They sealed the cracks and sanded the doors, and painted the wood cabinets with several coats of paint.  The previous owner had installed her own handles and knobs, and they were often not installed correctly, so overlarge holes. The workers filled the holes and they are completely invisible now -- a great finish job.  Rick Petrich called me daily to update me on the progress.  At the end of the job, he asked more than once if there was anything else I needed or wanted changed or touched up. He warrenties the work his company does.

We received 3 bids and choose Petrich Painting.  We signed a contract and put half downpayment.  They finished job early and guanteed work for 5 years.  They have checked back with me to see if I was satisfied and needed anything further. We feel we received excellent work for the money we paid.

Excellent. Anything in the way that we couldn't move was moved or covered. Then after painting everything moved back. On one wall where multiple masks were hung, he even took a picture before moving so that the items could be replaced exactly as they had been. Cleanup was excellent. Anybody can do a good job painting which he did but the preparation and cleanup really made the difference for us.

They did the work a couple of months ago and I am still waiting on some parts that I messed up on to come in. They have been 100 percent. They were professional, on time and responsive. They actually went out of their way to help me out on some mistakes that I made. They are A+ all the way around. I would absolutely use them again.

He does beautiful work. He happened to have some real life issues that hit him hard, but he was always responsive. I was very pleased with his work, and will use him again.

Overall we are very pleased and hope to recommend Ryan to others. He is very busy and I would like to feel a bit more personal service and not feel that he is rushed so much. That being said-he did what he said he (and his workers) would do in exactly the time he said he would do it in. Start Monday and finish Friday! Overall they showed up on time with just a bit of delay but nothing that stopped the progress. Not often that you can say that! As a realtor who works with the trades often, I can say this is special! In fact after all was complete and a few things needed a touch of work, Ryan came back while sick as a dog. Wish I had known he was ill as it could have waited. So - I feel he and crew are keepers!

Ryan Petrich and his crew did an excellent job. They were able to complete my project in less than 3 weeks. Other bids estimated 6 to 8 weeks.Ryan's crew was professional and worked hard. This project had the potential to be messy (removing popcorn texture from ceilings, texturizing, sanding, painting) but Ryan's crew did a great job and protected all surrounding walls,floors and furnishings. Ryan believes that prep work is important for a quality finished product. All woodwork and cabinetry was fully sanded and primed before the finishing coat of paint. Ryan's crew was careful and paid attention to detail. If something wasn't right, they fixed it. Ryan did not install the new granite countertops, but recommended an excellent fabricator and installer. He coordinated the installation details with that company to keep my project moving. If I had any concerns they were addressed immediately. Ryan clearly wants his client to be satisfied with the end product. I was very impressed that after the work was completed and final payment made, Ryan called me about a week later to ask if anything needed attention. My kitchen and living areas look updated and new. I definitely recommend this company.

Ryan Petrich is very professional. He listened to what we wanted and suggested options during the bid process. This process went well with some changes until we finalized all the details. I appreciated the detailed, itemized quote of all the work. Throughout the remodel process Ryan communicated the day-to-day plans, so we were aware of what was going on. Overall, the experience was very good. It went very well and turned out better than we expected. I requested some changes as the work progressed, and Ryan accommodated the changes. The workers showed up on time and worked hard the entire day until quiting time. They were professional and paid attention to detail and completed the work properly. This company is great and I highly recommend them. Ryan Petrich was very prompt in getting us a bid, the price was fair and we received a discount because I found them on Angie's List. Even though Ryan's wife had their third child last Wednesday, the day they started the job, he made sure his crew was here on time and wow were we impressed. These fellows are extremely neat and fast. They prepped the house on Wednesday, worked really long hours on Thursday until 7:30 at night, hardly took any breaks and finished by 4 pm on Friday. I've used other painting contractors in previous homes, but this company is probably the most efficient and provides the highest quality work of any I have used in the past. We are very pleased; our house looks great.

The job was done extremely well. Ryan was very patient and helpful throughout the process. Even though there late changes in the color of the cabinets, and an issue with one of the coatings, Ryan took care of it completely. He made sure we were very happy, and was always willing to do whatever it took to make our new kitchen come out exactly as we wanted it. <br /> <br /> ** Update** <br /> <br /> Ryan and Petrich Painting has dissapointed us.    Several attempts to reach them after our job was completed for touch up and warranty work have failed.    After seeing other negative comments on Ryan, I can see they were correct.    Dont use this company.   They offer a warranty, but obviously it's useless if they never call you back.

He was very professional and prompt. He was very knowledgeable and knew what he was doing. He finished his work on time and he was reasonably priced for the work that he did.

Overall, it was fansistic from start to finish. The crew that came was professional and were very good. They were also very cooperative in terms of what rooms to do because we had to move items from one room to the next so they could do their painting. The crew moved the heavy stuff. Because we have a lot of picture galleries, I was reluctant to have the house painted, but they made it a pleasure. I would highly recommend them.
