I learned of A & T Landscapers through Angie's List. I called the owner Tom Wohlrab who promptly returned my call and stopped by to discuss what I needed. Tom was so knowledgeable regarding paver material and design. Based upon my needs, he took notes and photos in order to develop a proposal which included a detailed plan for the back patio/walkway and front walkway. Tom stopped by my house again very shortly after the first visit, to present his proposal. As always, he was courteous and extremely knowledgeable regarding every aspect of the job. The design was very professional and he took care of every detail needed. I was very impressed with his knowledge and also was able to rely on his expertise regarding the Techo-Bloc material which he is certified to install. On both visits, Tom took the time to explain the installation process, advised on material and design, and understood that I had a party planned hopefully after the installation. I accepted his proposal after he discussed it with me. He was extremely conscientious and thorough, and this was later evidenced throughout the job. I then met him at the store where the pavers were to be purchased. Tom was so patient and helpful as I tried to decide on the paver, wall, paver edging style, and colors. His design enabled him to accurately place the order that day for the pavers needed. He also accurately estimated when he could start the job.
Prior to the job, I called Tom to ask if he could work with my electrician to install a Generator. The wires needed to be placed under the new pavers in the back. He said it would be fine. (the price quoted above includes the additional $500 for the excavating and installation of PVC conduit and copper lines for the new generator as well as installation of two cement slabs). Tom said when he would call the electrician prior to starting the job, to ensure he understood these new requirements.
Tom arrived to begin the job as planned in early August. He is an excellent manager as he oversees the work of the men doing the job. I didn't have to explain what I wanted again to those installing the pavers since Tom was present everyday ensuring that the job was done as expected. He checks on every detail on a daily basis and always checked in with me during the day or afterward in the evening to ensure that I was satisfied with the work being done. Unfortunately early on, Tom encountered some water issues in the back area effecting the patio. Instead of ignoring it and just putting the pavers on top, he preserved to understand where the water problem was coming from. Besides being a landscaper and knowledgeable of paver work, he is so knowledgeable regarding house drainage. He uncovered a problem with the footing drains of the house. Although this added to the length of time the job took, he wanted it done correctly. He explained the situation and how it should be handled . I agreed that he should take care of it. He installed all new drainage (350 feet) and which was then discharged into the woods. This was not included in the original estimate above.
When Tom began the paver work, I changed my mind regarding the design. Instead of a side garden around the side of the house in the back, I now thought a small patio instead of the garden would be more practical. Although I changed the design, Tom was very understanding and took additional time to rework the design. It entailed changing the design of the back steps, extending a side wall, and ensuring the side patio was graded properly and not very steep. Tom presented a new design to me the next day and it was exactly what I wanted. However, it really changed the flow of what was originally planned. Tom was very flexible to adjust the amount of pavers and wall brick needed for the new plans. Tom also worked very well with the electricians who set-up the generator. In addition, as he was working on the back patio, it was noted that some of the deck stairs were rotted. A carpenter then constructed a new deck staircase. Tom and his men worked very well with the carpenter too.
Due to the water issues, the back patio was not ready as expected for the late August party. However, Tom went above and beyond to make the backyard look clean and neat (even mowing the lawn) the day before the party. The party was held and everyone understood that work was in the process of being done. Then I presented Tom with another deadline. I had another party planned on 09/14. He continued to work very hard to finish on time. Unfortunately, he once again encountered a water drainage problem in the front as he started working on that walkway. He figured it out and addressed it as needed. Then he encountered an electrical box for the lamppost that was buried under the driveway. Since this was a hazard, he advised me to contact the electrician. Thanks to Tom's advice, this was repaired as needed. He could have ignored it and proceeded to cover over the electrical box. Tom has a great work ethic. He worked on my house as if he was working on his own house. In addition, he knew exactly how to grade and level the back area which was uneven and steep in several parts. He has a great eye for design and had to have everything done the correct way and never cut any corners to save himself time or work. The work was completed prior to my September party. Tom came by the morning of the party to even lay artificial grass over some parts of the lawn. Everyone really enjoyed the new patio area. I am so pleased with the results. It actually looks so much better than I expected. It was so helpful being included in the design as it progressed. I would recommend A & T Landcapers for any paver type work, water drainage problems and certainly landscaping.
