The tile work itself was very poor quality. He left a mess for me to clean up. The shower leaked and he didn't fix it. He told me that the shower drain was leaking, but in fact, it was the shower curb that was leaking. He knew that, because whatever he did (he caulked the area) stopped the leak for a while. Now the gap between the marble and the tile is widening and the leak is getting worse. I think he knew what the problem was, but didn't want to have to replace the whole shower to fix the problem.

It got off to a slow start. Once the work was started, he did good work in a timely manner.

He tiled and put in a new shower. We could not be happier with the job. He was very clean and didnt leave any tracks in our house. He was so friendly and professional. Very easy to deal with. I cannot compliment him enough.

"Thank you for the review. I was taught early on that one of the most important things you can do for a customer is to leave the house as clean as it was when you arrive every morning. You as a consumer are kind enough to allow us into your home to work on a project for you. Having a bathroom torn up for any length of time is enough of an inconvenience in itself. You should not have to worry about cleaning up a daily mess to go along with it. I hope you, will keep us in mind for any future projects."

The job went well. Mr. Slater did a very good job in a timely manner. He was very quit, clean and professional. He installed a new valve on the bath tub faucet that required soldering copper pipe. The quality of his work was excellent. We are very pleased with our new bathroom. Bob is a very nice person, honest and trustworthy. I would definetly hire him again.

After a shaky start in which I almost backed out due to the amount of time it took to start the job, Bob was very good about helping me pick out the materials and planning for the new bathroom. We had several conversations prior to starting the job and I appreciated his advice. Bob is a nice fellow and seems to be easy going.
I finally booked the job to start on October 7th because I had 2 weeks off starting the 7th. On the first day, he did not show up and apologized because he had to finish work at another home.
The next day, on the 8th, he and his son showed about about 9:30 (an hour later than planned) to begin work. It was a pattern that for the rest of the time that the job took, the Slaters were definitely on their own time schedule as far as the time they started. If I expected them at say, 9:30, they would show up at 10:30 and so on.
The work took about a month to complete. The finished product was indeed beautiful; my new bathroom is wonderful!
However, the concerns I have center around the fact that I never really knew what time the Slaters were going to show up and also because Bob was not good at returning phone calls.
After we got to the half-way mark and I paid Bob for half the job, he was increasingly hard to reach. Some days I left a dozen or more phone calls and did not get any answer in return until the next day. There was always a good excuse for why I didn't hear back from him (left the cell phone in the truck, etc.) However, I would leave multiple calls on both the cell phone and office as well as sending emails. All were apparently ignored until Bob was good and ready to get back to me.
The second half of the project was not pleasant for me as I felt I was at the mercy of Bob. There was also a delay because the wrong mirror was ordered from Lowe's and it took more time for a new one to come in. That wasn't Bob's fault, but it was just another aggravating circumstance.
As we got near to the end of the project, I went ahead and paid Bob for almost the rest of the project. I only owed him under $200. There were some odds and ends I needed finished that were not done to my satisfaction.
The last time Bob came, I left him a note and he fixed all the items except for one. I tried to call him one more time to see if he would come back to finish the last concern, but apparently the paltry sum I still owed him didn't make it worth his while to come back.
I waited to write this review to see if Bob would contact me to finish the job and get the rest of his payment. No word as of this writing in January.
I'm disappointed that he didn't feel it necessary to finish the job to my satisfaction. Overall, I'm pleased with the job, but not so pleased with Bob's work ethic.

Response to Provider:
There are, indeed, 2 sides to every story. When I purchased the "Big Deal" in June, I was off for the summer (I'm an educational administrator who works a schedule similar to teachers). At that time, I never dreamed it would be October until I would see the work started. I was told that he had too much work and so he couldn't get to me until the fall. The scope of the project, along with the fact that I did not have the free time that I had in the summer was indeed an issue for me.

I'm sure that changes along the way are just a normal part of the remodeling project. Certainly that shouldn't have been a surprise to Bob.

It was very important for this project to be completed at a time when I was off. I then booked the two weeks of my fall break. However, with Bob coming so late every day and with some days being skipped altogether, the project went deep into November. It made me nervous to think that the project would have to go on with my being back at work.

If the contractor knew that the west side of Indy was going to be a long haul, the contractor should not have taken the job. I wouldn't have had a problem if Bob would have just let me know the time he was going to arrive. As it was, I had to guess each day. And with 3 dogs, it was important that I be home! Also, with my daughter being a nurse who works the graveyard shift and having the bedroom Bob had to go through, it was more important than ever that he communicate when he was coming. If I had known when he was going to show up, my dogs would have been secured and my daughter would have been in another bedroom. However, with his comings and goings so loosey-goosey, I became loosey-goosey as well and let my dogs and daughter do their own things. (By the way, the dog that snapped was not able to walk, was 17 years old and had to be put down a week after your last visit.)

I wouldn't have had to call 10 times a day if the contractor would have just returned the calls/emails the first time. He does have an office phone which must be a bogus office because no one at that number ever picked up. I work a job where I am busy with one teacher while others call/email me. I often send off a quick email telling a person I will be right with them. One doesn't have to interrupt one job too much to return a call. With my job, I always get back to people the same day because it's the right thing to do. This is just being polite, in my way of seeing things. Not returning calls is passive-aggressive and down right rude. You might be a bath contractor, but you are still in the people business and need to make people feel like they matter. Anyway, a call back in the evening would have been nice, but most of the time it was not forthcoming. Whether or not my calls were about materials that hadn't come in, or about me just trying to find out when you were coming or questions about the job, my calls should have been returned!!!

I guess my time just wasn't as valuable as Bob's.

With my background as a teacher, work habits and timeliness are extremely important to me.

The note I left the last day you came (at a time I didn't know you would show up) was taped to the door you had to enter to gain access to the bathroom. Because my daughter was there for part of the time on your last visit, I know you at least examined the last area of my concern. She did tell me you were looking at it. I did call one more time to check to see if you saw the note and to see if you were going to complete the job to my satisfaction, but of course that call was ignored along with all the others. Of course I wasn't home when you went out, I work! How about returning a call????

One more thing, I never saw an itemized list of the items that were purchased and I saw few of the leftover materials (I finally asked you about the bathroom tile and you did produce a few of those). Shouldn't that have been part of the invoices I received?

Who knew that the northwest side of Indy was the other side of the world? However, I get the thing about the long travel time. You should never have agreed to do the job if this was going to be a problem.

Next time, it might behoove you to stick to your own stomping grounds; it's really not too much to ask that a customer know what time you're coming, even if you are picking up materials. I spent too many days of my precious fall break pacing and wondering when you were coming.

Update: As of today, 1/25/14, I'm changing my quality grade to a "D". Now that the work has settled, I've noticed a new issue and there are issues that I neglected to report the last time. The new issue is that the paint next to the new closet is crackling and peeling off. The first issue I neglected concerns the quarter round in front of the old closet and next to the shower and toilet area. The quarter round is very sloppy, it either doesn't go with the existing quarter round, is awkwardly placed, or non-existent. The second issue concerns the tiles that extend out from the shower to the end of the wall. There is some residue all over the tiles that should have been clean

"There are, indeed, 2 sides to every story. The time it took to get the job started was due to the scheduling requested by the member for her work schedule, wanting the job to be done when she had time off. I was under the impression she almost backed out due to the scope of the project, not the time frame. There were also several changes made by the homeowner along the way, some of which required the removal of tile just installed and repairing the walls as a result, and then completing the changes. All of this takes extra time. Regarding our daily start time, the job was on the west side of Indy and we are out of Noblesville. Stopping in the morning on the way to pick up materials needed takes a little extra time. We also had to go through the bedroom of someone in the family that worked nights, and was usually still in bed when we got there. The only access we had to the house was through the garage and into the kitchen, where the 3 dogs were, one of which snapped at myself and my son more than once. I did receive several phone calls a day from this member while we were waiting for material to complete the changes. I do not check the office phone until I get home, and if I'm working on your project, I will not take time away from you to talk to someone else. I am usually able to return calls in the evening, but calling me 10 times a day doesn't get a return call any sooner. I am glad to hear tha she is pleased with the bright, beautiful new bathroom she has. I was not aware of any other issues, as I did not see a note on my last trip, and there was no one home when I went out."

Baths-N-Such completed a shower remodel in 10/2013. I began to notice water on floor after showers. I determined water was leaking only when water was turned on, possibly leaking between shower control valve and shower head. Contacted Bob, took a week for him to get back with me. He came out and repaired problem at no additional cost. He apologized for the inconvenience.
"I received an email from this member Jan. 6, which was in the middle of the big storm, with widespread power outages, and phone lines were down. We live in an area with sketchy internet access at best, and in a large snowstorm the satellite dish will be covered with snow, making internet impossible. I called him back as soon as I could and scheduled the repair immediately per his schedule. The wall was patched that day, sanded the next, and we were told the homeowner would finish the painting themselves. I'm glad they were pleased with the project (see review for Oct. 31st.), and will be happy to work with them in the future."

We are very pleased with our master bath remodel. Bob completed the work included in his proposal, as well as some extra things that came up along the way, which was very much appreciated. I liked that Bob listened to my ideas and helped me to fine tune them to a practical application.
Bob is a great problem solver, as evidenced by the when the granite company made a mistake in cutting, and Bob was able to come up with a good solution that kept us from a delay in waiting for a new piece of granite.
Bob?s pricing was fair and we were happy with the way he included allowances, which allowed us to decide which items (tile, mirrors, faucets, etc.) we wanted to spend extra money on.
We enjoyed working with Bob Slater of Bath ?n Such and would use his services again in the future and would recommend him to others.

Guest Bathroom Remodel total cost: Approx. just under $9,000*

This was the 1st time I did a major remodel on my 1st home. After meeting with several contractors I selected Bob Slater and his company Baths N Such. Bob was neither the lowest nor the highest price. He was in my mind, after meeting with him and reading his other Angie?s List Reviews, the most down to earth, professional, considerate, talented and knowledge worthy. And this high opinion of him was only confirmed again during and after my project was completed.

He was kind enough to provide a list of suggested places where I could go to find tile, plumbing fixtures, etc. For the tile he suggested the Tile Shop in Indianapolis and they were fabulous, specifically the design consultant Linda, whom Bob has worked with on many occasions. As I slowly piecemealed this bathroom remodel together ? figuring out what kind of tile, if I wanted decorative shelves in the shower, what kind of faucets, what color paint, if the lighting would work - you name it, I had a question for it - Bob was extremely patient and helpful during the entire process. He was always very responsive to any messages I left for him and he never made me feel that my questions were silly or unnecessary.

Because of him I gained the confidence to help put this remodel together and I am very proud of how it turned out.

After the project was complete he followed up to make sure I was happy with everything. One thing I didn?t like was the toilet seat that came with the new toilet. Not Bob?s fault in any way but I just didn?t like the plastic seat. He had a key to my house and next thing I know I came home and he had changed out the seat! Truly a business owner that does everything he can to satisfy their customer. I cannot thank him and his son Shaun enough for the time and care they spent on my project. They were extremely considerate and cleaned up before they left each day. I would highly recommend them for any bathroom remodel. I have already asked Bob to consider doing some remodeling on my master bathroom later this summer.

*Please keep in mind the total cost of my guest bathroom remodel was partly dependent on the type of fixtures and accessories I wanted. Cost could have been less or more depending on what I chose. I picked out and purchased the following but they were installed by Baths n Such:
 - 2 sink faucets (Lowes; Windemere Brushed Nickel 2 handle Watersense bathroom sink faucet, drain included for $139.00 a piece for total of $278.00 before tax)

- Bathtub and shower faucets (Lowes; $28.15 for universal T-valve and $223.00 for Delta Leland Monitor 14 Series Tub and Shower Trim for total of $251.15 before tax)

- 2 mirrors above the double sinks (Lampsplus.com; $261.99 a piece for total of $523.98 before tax; usually you can get free shipping if you spend over a certain amount)

- 2 lights fixtures above the 2 mirrors (LightingDirect.com; Thomasville Lighting Roxbury Bathroom Fixture at $88.65 a piece for total of $177.30 before tax; free shipping)

- Tub/shower door (Basco Shower Enclosures sold thru Plumbers Supply Company in Fishers; Bob graciously picked up for me when order came in ? approx. $700)

- Bathroom paint (Lowes; 1 gallon for about $34)

- Accessories (3 various towel bars all in brushed nickel finish ? towel bar ($44.95), towel rack ($89.95) and towel ring ($25.95) for total of $160.85 (no tax and no shipping) from SignatureHardware.com); Grab bar from Lowes at $19.98 and toilet paper holder from Lowes approx. $15)

**I also purchased the granite top and sink bowls from Olympia Stone which they installed (but Bob and Baths n Such did remove and dispose of my old vanity top so the new granite top could be installed). I was able to pick a granite remnant (basically a left over piece of granite from a custom job) which is usually less expensive. Cost was $790.28 for Olympia to fabricate and install 1 ¼ ?granite remnant for my size vanity. Also included 2 sink cut out for under mount sink, installation of under mount sink, faucet drillings, 4 ? backsplash and standard edge detail. The 2 white sink bowls were $100. Total spent was just under $900.00. Very pleased with how everything turned out with the granite. Would highly recommend getting a backsplash!

Bad. It took over 4 months to get on the contractor's schedule. Some of the work was performed by the contractor's son who has no bath remodeling skills and whose work had to be redone. One day the son was scheduled to work he never called or showed up. The contractor was bad about returning our calls, which were frequently ignored. On the plus side, the subcontractor he used to install the glass partion and shower door including metal framing was punctual and highly skilled.
Overall, the whole job was overpriced, dragged out seemingly forever, and the grout installation haphazard at best.

Update: 1/30/2014

There was a leak in the ceiling in the garage which was thought to be caused by an ice block. After further examination we discovered that the leak was coming from the shower when running at mid temperature and pressure. We discovered that there was no water shield placed behind the new tiles we had purchased just over a year prior. Also, we found that he did not caulk properly, and that he even installed the new tub without placing a new board under it for added waterproofing. We are appalled by his lack of professionalism and skill and encourage others to avoid utilizing their poor services, period.
Response from BATHS-N-SUCH
"Wow--6 months later a bad review. Just to set the record straight, this member requested bare minimum repair work. My original quote was met with a counter offer. Sorry---not a used car salesman. I did what I could to help them out with the pricing. We removed a shower base and the 1st 5 or 6 rows of tile. They supplied the tile, which was close, but not the same, and did not want to re-grout the entire shower so at least the grout would be the same. As far as my son is concerned, the day he failed to show up was the day he sat in the driveway at their house for 45 minutes trying to get an answer at the door. I finally told him to leave and I tried to reach someone later. I'm glad they liked the glass portion of the job, and as I tried to explain at the time, the glass was a good 1/2 of the entire price. I believe we did the best possible job for what was requested of us, and what we were asked to work with. To anyone reading this---please don't ask any of us to sacrifice our quality control in the interest of saving a couple bucks, chances are pretty good you won't be happy. Thank you"

Earlier this year I purchased a deal from Bob Slater of Baths-N-Such for a bathroom remodel. Shortly thereafter, Bob reached out to me to schedule a walk-through. Since I wasn't in any hurry to start the remodel, Bob took down some notes and said he'd contact me in early October. Bob followed up on his promise and gave me an estimated date upon which he could begin work. Bob always arrived on time each morning and would contact me should he be running late, even if by only 15 minutes. He kept a clean work area. He was very thorough in his work and wouldn't sacrifice quality for the sake of time. I was very impressed with the overall product. My only regret is not hiring him out to install new flooring. I definitely plan on hiring Baths-N-Such in the future. My bathroom looked so nice upon completion, I even hesitated using it for a few days.
Poor communication at first, finally did give rest of estimate. After estimate, very little communication until work started which I called office to find when he might be starting. He was on time and finished in appx a week. He was called back a week later when toilet would not quit running, this was fixed. I also questioned why some of the tiles were not 'flat against the wall' (some of the corners stick out appx 1/4inch---not much grout between tiles). He stated that some of the tiles were bowed, when questioned about why he would use bowed tiles--I would of returned and gotten non-bowed tiles so he could finish, Bob was unable to give me an answer. The floor tiles were placed however the joint sealer wasn't applied (never opened) so I finished the tile joint sealing.
I had to pursue the dealer to get a date scheduled which was changed a couple of times. Also he wasn't punctual and didn't have what was needed making a trip to Lowe's necessary. The finished project is very acceptable and what should have been 3-4 days to complete took nearly 2 weeks.
Response from BATHS-N-SUCH
"This is why it is so important to fill out your report as soon as possible. Facts can get lost along the way. We did have some scheduling issues, the member requested a start date of sometime after May due to their schedules, and by the time we were able to connect, we were scheduling later in July/early August. I met with her the week of July 23rd to finalize tile choices. The job was started July 31st and completed Aug 3rd. We typically will make trips to Lowes or our suppliers during a job simply because things come up when you start tearing into walls that you cannot possibly predict, and it is physically impossible to have everything you need to cover all scenarios. (My van is only so big) This was a simple shower replacement that did require some extra work, but for it to take 2 weeks to complete, I would have had to install 2 rows of tile a day and then gone fishing! I appreciate the A ratings on all other aspects of this project, and punctually is something that I understand is important, but when we drive from Noblesville to Indy and need to pick up supplies along the way, it can be challenging to show up at 8a.m. every day. I'm glad to see that the finished project is acceptable, and I apologize for any misunderstandings or inconvenience."

I was very pleased with the work and found Bob Slater and his son very easy to work with.
Bob was extremely helpful in suggesting stores to look for tile, vanity and fixtures ... gave me advice regarding
selection and even met me at Lowe's to help me select vanity and toilet.
I really appreciated it that Bob was here each morning at 9 and left prior to dinner time... cleaned up on a daily basis...and made sure I had a functioning toilet in my one bathroom house.
Price was lower than quoted by others and a detailed proposal was presented and adhered to.
The major factor in selection was that I felt Bob was honest. I had no qualms about
leaving him in the house when I was not home. He and Sean even played with my dog.
There were a few minor things that needed to be redone at the end and Bob came back and took care of them without delay.
I had specific ideas about what I wanted done and Bob patiently worked with me. I am very happy with the end result and am
enjoying my new bathroom. I would highly recommend Bathsnsuch and plan to use them again in the future.

They did a wonderful job. The new glass tile looks great. We spent more than we could have because we decided to buy expensive glass tile, but the cost of the labor was very reasonable. Bob clearly explained what would happen and what possible problems there might be before the work started (such as issues that might arise with the pipes in the wall once they removed the plastic shower insert). He and Shawn obviously take a lot of pride in their work, and are very careful and painstaking. They don't cut corners. I was pleased and impressed. Plus Bob is a pleasant person to have in the house. He was friendly and professional.
This was the SMOOTHEST and EASIEST project we've done yet! I had gotten about 5or so estimates for our bathroom remodel and I told my husband that I didn't care what number Bob Slater came back with we were going with him because I just liked him! Compared to the others, I felt he was nice, reasonable, knowledgeable, and he is just a down to earth kinda guy! Bob and his son, Shawn ,were awesome. First off, they are the nicest people you could ask for! From the time Bob came over to do an estimate to when they were pulling out of my driveway after the project was complete, they were nice, honest, professional, timely and courteous! There were days that I was home when they we're working, and others they were there alone, without any difficulty. We had a couple surprises, no thanks to whom ever built my house, and all were handled by Bob and his son without a problem. The bathroom turned out beautiful!!! Bob and Shawn are very skilled at what they do and worked together like a fine oiled machine. The project was done in a timely matter. We're looking forward to having Bob back at the first of the year to tackle our MASTER BATH! If you want a beautiful bathroom, call this guy...you won't be sorry!

Top notch service from start to finish. Cleaned up their mess on a daily basis. There was an oversight when quoting the estimate as the depth of the closet was assumed to go the depth of the old shower--but it didn't. As a result a wall in the hallway had to be cut to accomodate the new shower. I offered to pay for the additional work but Bob wouldn't take any more even though it was an honest mistake. The shower really looks great, the new wall painted, and everything cleaned up. Great job.

Bob & his son did an AMAZING job! I absolutely love my new bathtub/shower! He took something that was previously an eye sore into something I want to show off now when guests come to stay. Bob first came out and gave me several options and estimates for my bathroom. He was very helpful guiding me through what tile design would be the best for the job. He even offered to meet me over at Lowe's to help me select it. He gave me a time frame of how long the project would take and he was right on (4 days). He also ended each day by cleaning up any mess he made. He's very good at what he does...and very reasonable too. He is extremely outgoing, trustworthy and professional and I would HIGHLY recommend him. I will definitely be using him on any future tile work!!

Bob Slater was very professional and the work preformed was excellent. He did a complete tear downand remodel of our master bath. He helped us with suggestions on tile and layout and the cost was excellent. We were impressed with him and also had him complete the work we needed done in our dining room including crown mouldings light fixtures and painting.

We had five estimates on the remodeling of the bathrooms and Bob's was the the most reasonable by far. He came to our home and we sat down and went over everything that needed to be done. Bob was so helpful, we met several times at Lowe's and Home Depot and he went over the pros and cons of the different brands of tubs, toilets, shower doors and tile. Bob and his son were prompt, friendly and very neat. Bob tiled the laundry room, replaced the trim and the next evening I was back doing laundry! The bathrooms are beautiful, we love the master bath shower and our daughter is thrilled with her new bathroom. We are very pleased with all the work and would highly recommend Bob.

I was very, very pleased with him. Bob Slater is the owner and he did the work. He started October 5 and finished the end of November or beginning of December. Both my husband and I were impressed. He cleaned up after each day's work. He left no mess whatsoever. Had we not looked in the bathroom we wouldn't have known that he was there. He really did a nice job of cleaning up after himself every single day. He does extremely good tile work. He was a very pleasant individual. He was very professional and had a good sense of humor. I trusted him completely and I had no qualms whatsoever leaving him here alone in my home. I would absolutely use him again and I would recommend that other people use him.

"Thank you for the kind words. I enjoyed working with you on your project. It's always nice to work with someone who knows what they want. We had a few changes along the way, and a delay between bathrooms while waiting for the new shower door. I appreciate your patience in trying to deal with the manuf. rep. on a color issue regarding one of there fixtures. I know that added a couple of weeks to the project as well. I hope to hear from you again in the future"

We were very happy with the work. The bathroom looks amazing! He did a great job. He's very professional, friendly and would highly recommend him to others. We picked out & purchased the vanity, tile and fixtures ourselves, which was a bit overwhelming at first, since this was our first time remodeling a bathroom. Bob was able to give us suggestions on places to go and what products to get. He even met us at one of the places to help us pick the tile pieces out. Everything came together nicely & we couldn't be happier.
