He said all the right things up front, but everything went down-hill after he had the deposit. Communication slowed or dropped off completely on his end, wrong materials were used, significant inattention to detail, and a number of delays, trash left in the yard even after they were done and gone, and they tracked mud all over the deck they built. The job was eventually finished after the delays, and it looks good, but it felt like a constant struggle. Even worse, water now leaks into the basement from the unflashed ledger, and into the house from around the door they installed whenever we get a bad storm.
Response from Best Home Improvement
"Well if I had any idea who this was I could probably address this load of bull crap… My company is known for cleaning up after itself and every deck is power washed after the work is completed so therefore the concept that there were muddy footprints is nothing but a load of trash....Some customers don’t pay attention during our initial meeting when I explained that we are subject to the weather and then if it rains and rains and rains there are delays in our calendar… Some people are actually shocked to Find out that we are delayed because of rain, as if we would work in the rain using electrical tools… It is all explained during the initial meeting, we typically book 5 to 7 months ahead and it is very difficult to predict exactly when we will be somewhere 5 to 7 months from now… It takes all kinds of people to make a world"

A new deck to replace our old deck
Response from Best Home Improvement
"The customer is well outside our warranty period and in an area we no longer service … She called over a year and a half after the construction… So saying it was eight months is a bunch of crap....Additionally, Angie’s list intervened and interviewed both of us and determined that she was outside of our warranty. So I don’t even know why this is a complaint still on my Angie’s list page… Maybe that’s one of the reasons I don’t have Angie’s list anymore"

Gary said he would build us a stunning deck and he and his men delivered And, at an affordable cost. Quality construction all around. A truly finished look. Our project presented some challenges because the deck had to surround a sunporch and fit together with other existing features - brick sidewalks, metal fence, driveway, small garden pond. Gary, Matt and their crew made sure everything fit precisely. A truly professional team. Gary’s recommended features - lighting, metal railings, and lattice with fascia trim, give the deck an impressive, polished look. We couldn’t be happier. We had a number of companies bid on our project, but felt most comfortable with Gary. We’re truly glad we went with our instincts and picked Gary and his company.

Gary and the team do great work. Easy negotiations, no-hassle sales tactics. They work all year round and the deck looks wonderful. They were also the best priced in Chester County. There was some miscommunication with his former employee and bad weather that caused some confusion and bad weather that caused the project to take longer than expected to start, but once it started it was finished within a couple of days. Their team worked through the winter in the cold weather, excellent crew.

They did an absolutely fantastic job building onto my existing deck. Their work blended so nicely into the deck we had. If I need anything else done they'll be the very first company I call.

The guys were very professional and work well together. They cleaned up behind themselves it was like they were never there. There was an issue with the gate but Gary and his son made sure it was done personally. I believe the deck will be enjoyed for years to come.

Gary and team were excellent from start to finish. He arrived on time to quote out the work at a very reasonable price. He made sure to quote out all the possibilities for rebuilding and reinforcing our deck. His workers arrived on time and were able to get the job done in just two days. Everyone was very professional and quick to answer any questions. When it comes time to rebuild the rest of the deck I will definitely be reaching out to Best Home Improvements!

I hired Best Home Improvement managed to completely redo my bathroom. To accomplish this, they had to demo the room completely. I had a 1970s set up with a light blue tub and matching tile and no room between the toilet and tub wall. Gary and his staff tore out the tile, removed the hideous tub, demolished the existing back wall, rebuilt that wall after moving it back two feet, installed a prefab tub/wall combo, and created a custom plumbing solution so that I had one showerhead up very high for my tall husband and one much lower for me. They also replaced the vanity, redid the floor tile, and painted the room in my choice of colors....all within one week.

I was very pleased with Best Home Improvement. They built a beautiful deck for me. It is of excellent quality and exactly what we wanted! They were professional and courteous and they kept the work area clean, both while they were building and when the project was completed.

Facts: 1. He said June, it was September. He said, "There was a lot of rain", but he didn't know that in the summer, he went to give a bid on my boyfriend's porch. So yes, there was rain, but he was also busy selling. He said, "I didn't bug him" which was true, but it would have been nice to have a call! Eventually I did bug him. 2. He said pressure treated wood, but ended up using NON pressure treated wood, without telling me. The only way I found out was that he was going to have his fiancé paint my porch soon, but my brother mentioned that pressure treated wood had to breathe before being painted. When I e-mailed Gary about this, he wrote: Gary Cooper Sep 14 to me The step are....the porch floor is not....they don't make a pressure treated tongue and groove board for the porch.. Interesting... My boyfriend found pressure treated tongue and groove board for his porch at the first lumber yard he visited - Peter Lumber in Kennett Square. When I e-mailed Gary back to ask why he didn't tell me that he wasn't using pressure treated wood on the floor, he did not reply. 3. Fact (although he will deny it), I said on the phone, after we agreed that the porch floor would be wood, that I wanted the entire stairs, railings and posts to be Aeratis, because they were not underneath the porch roof. Gary called this a "mis-communication" (again, I should have gotten a contract). At least he used pressure treated wood for the stairs, but he said I said all of the posts should remain wood. This is a twisting of our conversation about the fact that I wanted the large posts holding Victorian decorative trim at the top to remain. He did add posts in Aeratis where required by code, so why not put in new posts WHERE THEY ARE ROTTING and where I asked for them? 4. He told me to "Spackle and paint" where this wood is rotting on the post at the bottom of the stairs (I hope to attach a photo, but am not good with technology!). I may not know much about construction, but even I know that post needs more than spackle and paint. 5. Gary said he would return and put round finials where he promised them on my porch. He said he would do it "in a few weeks". That was over 6 weeks ago. I have not seen him since. 6. He said his fiancé would paint the porch for $600. I painted it myself, right away, as it was not pressure treated wood. But since the steps ARE pressure treated, I'm waiting... although Gary's fiance was going to paint them right away too...

"Update: Although we gave this lady our very best attention and she seems like a good intentioned and genuinely nice person....she was VERY difficult to work for....countless visits, job adjustments, material changes and just overall constantly revising every aspect of this project. I have been in this business for 25 years and had THOUSANDS of customers....she was probably the most difficult. The easiest thing to do in this type of environment we have is to start mud slinging and playing the blame game. All I can say is that 99% of the time I have customers are reasonable, honest, and. easy to work with and everything typically runs relatively smooth. Every now and then you run into a customer for whatever reason who is very difficult and demanding right from the beginning. You try to be as understanding as possible and try to work with people like this who may be having a difficult time in their life for whatever reason or just simply are inherently difficult people. This customer is actually a very educated and nice person which leads me to believe that maybe she is just used to getting her way and when she doesn't, she goes on the offensive and lashes out as she did with me here in my reviews...SHE IS THE ONLY NEGATIVE REVIEW. I have a very good reputation for treating people well, being prompt and doing exactly what I say I will do. You cannot have a successful business for very long if you decide not to treat people honestly and fair. If you check several sources in the area you will determine that I am a very honest business man. You wouldn't last very long in this type of business taking people's money and then failing to satisfy them with the work. The law would not allow that and I would have been sued left and right with litigations against me of which I have none to date in all my years of business. Principle does not allow me to bullied under the threat of bad reviews as a substitute for fair business dealings and practices. If anyone wishes to contact me I would be glad to forward this customers correspondence with me along with many references from satisfied customers so one can determine exactly what I am talking about. For those of you who own a business or have worked in a retail type environment there are customers who agree to one set of terms and then after change the terms for their own benefit unfortunately. This is the case here. I hope my reputation from other reviews and sources which are very positive brings this to light. Thank you very much."

Gary overall was very responsive, and despite one of the wettest and rainy Spring seasons in recent memory, worked diligently to stick to and maintain the agreed upon schedule as best as possible. Gary was very up front about when the ground is very wet, or it is even sprinkling out, work can't be done because of the potential damage to customer property and his own equipment. We were actually pleasantly surprised how quickly the work went once the footers were dug, filled, and the posts set. And they most definitely did NOT cut any corners with the work, as the posts for the railings were set below and anchored into the deck joists, and on top of it, instead of simply laying out the pressure-treated decking in a alternating and staggered pattern, they took the time to create a very nice aesthetic parallel pattern of decking with a 2''x6'' board running perpendicular directly in the middle. It really makes the deck look like it was specifically designed for the space it sits in. Lastly, we had the LED post cap lights installed on the railings, and while it looked amazing, we did run into some issues with the 12V DC transformer, and the lights would not turn on after about a month or so. However, Gary came out pretty quickly after we let him know, tracked down the problem that was related current load and NOT his own work, and fixed it within a couple of hours. We would definitely recommend him and his Team anytime!

Before I even arrived from out of state, Gary called and said he had a slow day and could get things done in the afternoon. He said I know you are not here but we can settle up when you get into town. They completed the work that afternoon and everything was very well done. After I told Gary I was extremely satisfied, he said just drop a check in the mail which I did. Well done Gary!

From the very beginning, Gary was nothing but friendly, professional, and honest. When I first called, I was surprised he actually answered the phone! (We had been trying to deal with a couple other contractors who didn't do this or respond to messages left). Needless to say, my interaction with Best Home Improvement was off to a great start! We were replacing a small deck (100sqft) because of rotten wood. Gary came over quickly to take measurements for an estimate during an evening and had a written up estimate emailed to me that same night. His price seemed very fair so we decided we'd love to use his services. He got us scheduled in VERY quickly (less than 2 weeks since estimate) and he and his crew came out on a Sunday and rebuilt the whole thing in 6.5 hours! They were very fast, efficient, courteous, friendly and very hard working. The craftsmanship is fantastic! He made sure even little things didn't go untouched like sanding down the railing and any part of the deck that hands would touch. Even sanding off the corners near the stairway. They added extra bolts to existing framing that original builder never added to make sure the deck would be secure and safe. I was just so impressed by his attention to detail. Add to that his customer service - Best Home Improvement is top-notch! I highly recommend Gary and his team!

The Deck was magnificent ! They really know their business. They were challenged with a 10 ft. raised deck and they knew just what kind of support to build under it. They were able to save me money by restoring the existing joists, and build new foundation supports that made the structure very "solid", The did the work very quickly. They cleaned up after themselves very nicely. Their pricing was very good ! They also replaced a door leading off the deck that had a lot of rotted wood at the base - new baseplate, and surrounded the door with all new support trim beyond the door frame. Excellent work all way around. I would definitely recommend them.

It went great...

Had an initial interview/estimate with Gary who listened very well to my needs and suggested a couple of possibilities.

We agreed to a contract that we modified due to my wanting some extra beams replace and he was quick and honest with email replies stating the costs.

Gary's crew was amazing...respected parking lot spaces and neighbors property as I live in the middle of a (6) clock townhouse unit.

(4) of his crew worked quickly, without any loitering or messing around, and were extremely professional the entire time.

Lead carpenter Alex was great with the finishing touches and directing the group that worked very well together.

The deck looks great and the clean-up afterwards was even better than expected.

Totally worth the monies as Gary and his crew were considerate, timely with calls/texts/emails and punctual on the date of deck being redone.

The wait was worth it! Although it was a three month process from the moment we sat down with Gary (July) and discussed my vision of my deck, put down a down payment and had the crew over to begin the process (September) I couldn't be more pleased! The crew of 4 guys were on site for about 3-4 days. All our questions were answered and we were reassured of any concerns or more questions they are only a call/email away. I would highly recommend their services to anyone looking for a deck. The price was right and honest. I was told by family and friends not even pictures give the deck justice. Exceptional work! Thank you Best Home Improvement!

Started with a quick response for a quote - the comparison quotes were more difficult to get.
written quote with diagram - chose to go ahead, job was started on time, and completed ahead of schedule.
Workers were experienced - this was obviously one of many decks they had installed. Had all the tools and supplies delivered prior to workmen. They were professional, cleaned up, took away all demolished decking.
I am a DIYer and HGTV watcher - their process was by the book, and they took good steps to work around some issues that were unforeseen that left us with a very sturdy, finished deck.
Best of all, they gave suggestions to improve the design - to work around a driveway issue - symplified the whole entrance - genius!

i hired them back to add lattus, which they did so quickly, and made the deck look even more amazing.

Short summary - organized pros who did what they said they would, on time and on budget. Love the deck.

I absolutely love my new deck. It is beautifully built to my exact specifications and it was completed quickly.

Gary, the owner, provided hands on service and was very responsive to my 101 questions (before, during and after the job was completed). He does a great job of explaining what the options are, what the costs would be and the likely pros and cons for each of my choices.

One special request I had was a custom gate (which is strange because my deck has no stair access from the yard down below. The gate feature is to hoist furniture up because my home has low ceilings and moving tall furniture to the second floor was feat). Gary politely asked if I was certain about the gate, because it would cost a little extra to have it built to the exact size and location of hinges. The level of attention I received as a customer alleviated all possible worries about a job like this, which for me was huge, and which could have been much more expensive elsewhere, as I recall.

I would absolutely hire Best Home Improvement again. No question about that.
