Our old driveway was torn up and our new one was installed within 24 hours of making the call to James at Public! He was very professional and sent me a formal detailed estimate right away, unlike the other companies we had had come out to look at the job. James assured me he would be very meticulous with finishing edges and that we would be pleased with his crew’s work. I was happy to see that he really delivered on his word! When I looked out at the crew the next morning, James himself was driving the bobcat and overseeing everything, which I appreciated. Communication and price point were fantastic. I would definitely hire Public again in the future.

Not good. As one person already wrote it was a bait and switch in which James gave a low ball quote of $9800 to fix pothole and do the entire driveway. We said we wanted to get other quotes. He then said he would also do the sidewalk, widen the turnaround and would seal the driveway in October/November at half price and even give us a two year guarantee. This was a great deal, so we agreed. On the day of the job James sons rang our bell (James does not show up for the job found that out on the day of the job). His sons played dumb to what their Father said to us. They said their Father is not experienced on potholes. They said that the pot hole is going to cost much more and raised cost from $9800 to $11,500. This was on day of the actual job and once they already pulled up a lot of the driveway and started the work. We felt trapped and agreed. Now that the job is completed and on reflection we now feel scammed and upset. It is now October/November timeframe and we have been trying to get them to honor the half price for the sealing of the driveway and sidewalk. They texted it would be $825. We then asked if this is the half price and they did not text back. They still haven't got back to us after numerous calls to nail down a date to get sealing price. It has now been several weeks and it doesn't look like they are going to contact us. As far as the asphalt work goes, it is fair, the bottom of my driveway is not smooth and compacted, the same is true for the middle area going down the driveway. We asked them to fix it at the time and they said it is just the way the compacting machine works. Live and learn from our naivety on this matter.

This project went smoothly from start to finish. The Stanleys are a pleasure to deal with; personable, attentive to detail, and highly professional - as you'd expect fifth generation pavers to be. Our work crew arrived on schedule, broke up the old driveway and had the pieces loaded and gone in an hour or so. They laid plenty of gravel and two layers of paving, very carefully graded to run off into our existing drainage grate. The resulting driveway is exactly what we wanted, with fine touches all around like a freshly cut transition to the street pavement, nicely beveled sides, and smooth edges around plantings. We did not haggle on price and we received our money's worth - recommend without reservation.

Bait and Switch I got 4 quotes with ranges from $6200 to $ 7800, with James (public paving / Public hot top) being the 5th and final quote. James Sr showed up on time, communicated that he would be arriving earlier than scheduled. His quote came in at $6900 – basically right in the middle with other quotes I received. Reviews online looked decent, said they would honor their Angies List/Home advisor $300 promotion bringing the price down to $6,600…So I decided to move forward, and to my surprise he could start the next day. So, from quote to new driveway was 3 days. The crew showed up 1st thing in the morning and got right to work. Once they had started digging up and removing the old driveway, the son rings my doorbell to tell his father didn’t measure correctly, and for me to get what I was expecting was an additional $1500. OKAY !?! well the work has already started – what can I do at that point? Once the job was completed which took approx. 5 hours – they said I owed $8500, but after I pushed back on his faulty math, he agreed it was $8,100. At $8,100 I would not have hired as that was highest of all quotes. I’m not unreasonable, I expect project cost to run over, but this was greedy. The team on site was nice enough to deal with. But they didn’t bring the needed tools / equipment. They came to my door 2 more times. Once to borrow pliers and once because they ran out of propane. SO, I let them use the tank from my grill, which they used completely. They left tire tracks in the lawn, just left the hose laying out and Lesson learned – Have them detail in writing the scope of work or hire another paving company that isn’t going to bait you with a good price and witch you last minute. Quality looks fine.

They did exactly what they said they would do, and they were prompt as well; showing up on time and completing the job right on schedule. Driveway Repaving.

Project came out great. The driveway was very neatly lined up, smooth and even with adequate drainage. James was really great about responding to my concerns and was quick to get back to me. Crew was very professional and cleaned up very nicely while being respectful of neighbors. I would definitely recommend Public Paving. Price was very fair.

They were the first with a quote and the best price. The Crew are great people, courteous and very professional. New equipment and were very impressed with the final outcome. Went over and above. I would recommend them to anyone!!!

I am pleased overall, initially price was much higher but I was able to negotiate (30%). My experience shows all the services offer 8” deep digging and 8” gravel fill but no one does it (they slightly cover sand with the gravel). They all offer 2 layers of asphalt 1-1/2” thick but first layer as thin as it only can be and the top layer is a good one.

Hit top paving owner James was a pleasure to work with. He was very responsive and reasonable. He came in an did a large driveway in one day. His price was very competitive. The crew did a great job with attention to detail and left the area very clean when they left. Due to the hot weather the following days, when I drove on the driveway a week later my car left a few marks in it. I contacted James and he assured me he would come back out free of charge to heat up the spots and fix them. I would recommend them to everyone.

James and his staff were amazing! We set up an estimate, he was prompt and wrote down his whole estimate and explained the whole process. After getting a couple more estimate, my husband and I agreed we like his price and how he would do his job. The day of installation, we went through it again and his guys were great on answering any questions I had. James also made sure his guys were doing the job to the highest quality. My husband and I are supper happy with his work and would hire him again!

We had a GREAT impromptu experience with Public Hot Top! Lucky for us they were doing some work in the area and were very happy to help us out with our long overdue project. The work was done fast and clean. The owner, Jim, was professional and courteous. We will definitely be going to Public Hot Top for our next paving needs! Thanks again guys!

The job went great! looks great too! The company made sure the base was stable before applying any of the hot top so no cracks or car ruts would form. They ensured the grading was correct for water runoff. The crew was very professional. The site was left clean.

Overall, very happy with the work, driveway came out great. They extended part of the driveway to our deck and cleaned up the weird angle the driveway ended at to make it look better and fits the yard better.

James and his crew installed a beautiful professional grade new driveway at our 3-family condo. It makes our house stand out and allows for landscaping improvements throughout the yard. The edging and seal of the asphalt against the house foundation looks especially well-done. The driveway between our house and the neighbors is narrow and very difficult to work within but James and his crew handled it with ease. Paperwork was scarce with Public Hot Top. We initially went with them because the estimate of 1k lower than others. After some discussion they verbally committed to working within our budget which was several hundred dollars below the estimate. On paving day they pushed hard for 1k payment over initial estimate due to added material expense. Feel that they lowballed the estimate to win business - advise getting price guarantees in advance.

The job was well managed and very well done. There was much attention to details, lots of cleaning up and all were polite and gentlemanly. The price was fair. They delivered above and beyond what I expected. Thanks!
