"Back in 2013 (when this job was completed) Ms. [Member name removed] was provided with a proposal which included line-item pricing for the shingle portion of her roof, the cost of re-sheeting if necessary and the portion of her flat roof (which the previous contractor left a quarter of the low slope portion of her roof over her garage undone). It was highly recommended to her that we complete all of the said portions of her roof on her proposal. Ms. [Member name removed] chose to cross out both the flat roof portion of pricing and the re-sheeting cost, and placed her initials next to the shingle only pricing and signed the contract against our recommendations. I am the Office Manager and I was present for the phone call with Ms. [Member name removed] in regard to her concerns. Mr. Falstad the owner of the company explained the situation to her in a calm and professional manner. She just did not care for the explanation. She yelled "You are a large company and you can absorb the cost of coming back to install the flat roof for free". Ms. [Member name removed] was never charged for the flat portion of her roof which she declined. She stated she was a college professor and a good writer and if we did not and do this for free she would write a terrible review about us. We simply explained in a professional manner that publishing false statements about any company could possibly be considered slander. As the Office Manager I also tried to speak to Ms. [Member name removed] and was told she did not know me and was unwilling to speak with me. I believe this is the norm when you have an issue with a company that you do not necessarily know the person you speak with. As far as her warranty being compromised a different contractor told Ms. [Member name removed] she could have shingles installed on the flat garage portion of her roof in question. Mr. Falstad explained this would void the warranty due to the fact shingles cannot be installed on a flat roof. He did not say this action would void the warranty on the work done by Blue Hills Roofing which was installed correctly (per manufacturer specifications). I honestly do not feel we can do anything right by Ms. [Member name removed] at this point in time unless we are willing to install the flat roof portion of her garage for free, which we are simply not willing to do. I hope any consumers reading this review understand it is not fair to hold a contractor liable for work they are not contracted to do. Had Ms. [Member name removed] allowed us to complete her entire job this would not be the situation."

First, the Blue Hills Roofing office answered the phone without sending me to voice mail. While this may appear trivial I did not have the same experience with some other companies in this area and in some instances my voice mail message was never acknowledged. A technician, Tony, was dispatched within a few hours of my call and he provided me with a thorough explanation of the work that was needed as well as an estimate that proved to be exactly on target. He was a true professional. He was in constant touch with me by text or phone regarding the time he was going to arrive. As he was working, he periodically came down from the roof to explain what he was doing and why he was doing it. He worked constantly despite awful weather conditions. Most important, the new skylights and vent no longer leak.
"Thank you so much for that wonderful review! We definitely think it is an important aspect of our business to keep our clients informed as much as possible. Glad to hear your repair went well and we will be sure to tell Tony to keep up the great work he has been doing."

Overall the job went quite well. The owner Steve did an excellent presentation of what was to be done with his proposal. While not the least expensive bid we received, I had the most confidence in them based on Steve's presentation and references from friends who new of them or had used them. The bid called for 3 days of work and Steve had his crew on site bright and early on day 1 and completed the work right on schedule. The roofing system installed was done in an excellent fashion and it looks great. I did have a couple issues with some flashing and some siding corners that were unavoidably damaged during the old roof removal but Steve's site foreman repaired or replaced the damaged items (I had a piece of the siding corner material on hand) without hesitation.
The crew was very friendly and courteous and was very careful to protect the plants surrounding the house from falling materials. They also did a very good job of cleanup after each day of the job which is extremely messy as you might expect. This was very important to us in that we have a dog who has free run of the yard around the house. Very little materials have been found around the house following the work which is amazing since we had some wind during the day.
The only issue that took a bit of time to resolve and was not BH's direct responsibility was our driveway suffered some damage when the shingles were delivered and lifted up onto the roof by the shingle supplier. They use a large truck with outrigger legs to stabilize the truck when lifting the shingles. Unfortunately one of the legs was positioned on a slope and the pad on the leg made an impression into our asphalt. The problem was noted on the completion report to BH and Steve followed up with the supplier to implement repairs even though this was not a problem caused by his crew. The supplier called me back immediately, came out the next day to view the damage then made arrangements to have it repaired. Very professional and no additional cost to me.
Last but not least, Steve's office staff has done an excellent job ensuring our satisfaction. Very professional, very good customer service which is an attribute I highly regard in a service supplier.
Work quality overall is excellent, we've already had some pretty good wind and rain since the work was done and the house has remained dry as a bone. Thank you BH for a job well done!
Blue Hills roofing is the ONLY Platinum Preferred Contractor for Owens Corning in the Eau Claire, WI area & was recommended by the Owens Corning regional representative to CHECK the work/errors of the original installer & to verify the warranty conditions were followed by the original contractor. Sorry to say that the original contractor I picked was only a Preferred Contractor for Owens Corning & made numerous quality errors that resulted in leaks!
My original plea for help was immediatelly answered by Blue Hills Roofing & an appointment to check my roof was performed by Anthony in quick order. After showing Anthony my roof issues, they promptly provided an estimate for the rework needed to correct the errors of the original roofer. The date they provided for the rework was very satisfactory and they were prompt & professional & met the projected dates. Oh..and now is the first time since August 2014 that my roof is not leaking!!
They provided photographic evidence of the errors the original contractor's team had made and provided a detailed written report listing all the errors they uncovered as they repaired my roof. The original roofing contractor failed to detect a rotted deck board and put ice guard over a hole the size of an orange in my roof along with numerous nail punctures.
The install team & staff of Blue Hills Roofing gave confidence for my wife & I that our roof was CORRECTED to the standards that Owening Cornings requires to meet their warranty requirements.
One of my previous lives was as a Quality Professional at Mayo Clinic & I was plesantly surprised when I was called by the owner/president of Blue Hills Roofing to provide feedback on the work his company had done. In the Quality trade this is called the 'Voice of The Customer'!
My wife & I have given permission for Blue Hills Roofing to use us as a reference if they so desire!! I still have there signin my fornt yard!
Glad to hear you are happy with the work performed, and thank you so much for the positive feedback and review. We hope to assist you with any future home projects!!"

I've always believed in the statement "you get what you pay for" and here at Blue Hills Roofing, we might have slightly higher pricing than some of the other companies, but I can assure you it is all necessary to ensure that there are no corners being cut, and a quality roof can be installed correctly on your home by employees who are certified to do so. They did a magnificent job of installation and the clean-up was perfect. They removed the old roof quickly, made sure the roof boards were in good shape and put the new roof on in a little over 1 day. They were careful around my plants. We even were able to get some money back for bad shingles that were used on our old roof and the best part was they did all the paperwork!! When they came over to bid the job they were very professional, had a folder with all the information put together with different roofs in the area we could look at before we made our final decision. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for a new roof!!
My wife and I had a great experience. From the time Blue Hills Roofing came to the house for the consultation to the time they drove away after completing the roof and gutters everyone from the company was professional. Unlike other companies, Steve explained in great detail the purpose of every aspect of the roofing process (was important because my wife really needed to understand the value of what we were going to spend). Knowing the "Why" we needed what we needed was important to us and Steve was very informative. Lastly, professionalism was displayed through timeliness, follow through, and made sure we were happy every step of the way. Blue Hills Roofing was worth every penny. I would recommend this company to anyone.

I called to get an estimate on how much it would cost to repair a leaking gutter. The gentleman I spoke with said someone would be out within the next couple of days to take a look at it and call us back with an approximate cost to fix it. I asked if I or my husband needed to be there to meet the person who was coming out to look at the gutter- nope- fine.

A few days later, a message was left on our phone by the gentleman who came out to our house. In the message he said he "fixed" the gutter and would be sending us a bill. Obviously, we were a little stunned. What happened to the estimate I requested? So, naturally, I called the next day and spoke with the gentleman I initially spoke with, who told me that if the technician estimates that the required work won't be "that much," that it's their practice to just go ahead and do the work. Not ok.

Another issue was that the gutter wasn't fixed. It still leaks in the same spot. When I informed the gentleman of this, he said that he'll send someone out again, but that we first needed to pay the bill for the initial "work" that was done. He did apologize for not advising me of their "practice" during our initial conversation when I brought that up, but also said that he couldn't assure me that we wouldn't receive a second bill for the second visit. What?

I asked to speak with the manager or owner, thinking I'd get somewhere that way. At that point I really just wanted to forget about everything. I figured that it would be a wash- nothing was fixed, so we don't pay for anything, and I call a different company to do the work- everyone goes on their merry way.

Unfortunately, talking to the owner was the worst experience with a business owner, or any company, for that matter, I've ever had in my life.

He was rude, condescending, and didn't believe a word I said. He would not believe for a second that I wasn't informed of their practice to perform the work instead of provide estimates if the job "wasn't that much money". What does that even mean anyway? Is $300 not that much? Is $400? I think the homeowner should decide that one...

Finally, after I was sufficiently belittled and chastised by the owner, I gave in and paid the bill. I just wanted to be done with this company and this awful person. Maybe that's their tactic...

They sent another technician out to our house, while we were home (who turned out to be great, because my husband went to high school with him), and our gutter is now fixed, well, mostly.

Please, PLEASE look into other roofing companies- there are others out there. This was my first call, and I'm sorry that I ever made it.. It's not worth the hassle; it truly, truly isn't. This owner has sued people over $50. Do not put yourself in the position of being a victim of this owner.

We received a number of bids from all the most well known companies in town. Blue Hills Roofing stood head and shoulders above all of them. Steven's knwoledge and professionalism was second to none. We learned so much about our project, we had no idea there was so much to this type of work. Steven the owner explained it in easy to understan terms. The work was done to a high standard of quality and all the workers seemed very good at their jobs. They cooperated well and really seemed to enjoy their work. The clean up was great...our yard was cleaner when they left than before they started. They were always availible and very accomidating to any questions or concerns we had. By far the most professional and knowledgable company we delt with in any of our past and present endeavors. If you are doing exterior remoldeling especially roofing you are really missing the boat if you don't call these guys. Thank you.

The first time I hired Blue Hills Roofing, I was incredibly pleased with the results. I had a new roof installed, which included removing four previous layers of shingles. The team that arrived was friendly, efficient, and professional. Considering the mess of the previous layers, I was surprised to find only a few nails here and there after the job was complete.

The second time I hired the company was when I had two giant ice dams this past winter. To my surprise, the workers arrived the same day I called, and had the dams removed within a few hours.

The third time I hired Blue Hills was for new gutters and heat cables. Because Blue Hills is such a large company, with so many jobs, it took four unanswered phone calls before I finally received a response with an estimate. Once I agreed to have the work done, there were two appointments made and canceled last minute, before a third date was agreed upon. I was unable to be at my house when the workers came out, so my family was there in my place. A disagreement ensued about the aesthetics of one of the gutters. Looking at the attached picture, you can see (with a ruler) that the gutter leans in toward the house and is not level. While it?s true that the house in that spot is uneven, with slanting and misaligned framework, the gutter needs to function
properly AND look good. The workers realigned the gutter, despite the fact that it worked properly both ways. I am now satisfied with the work done.

When the owner, Steven Falstad, came out to my house to discuss the placement of additional heat cables, he was intimidating and condescending (in my opinion). Because neither the owner, nor myself, were present when the gutters were installed, there shouldn?t have been further discussion about the original placement of the gutter. Yet, Steven had to make a point that his workers were right all along, and that the gutter was fine with its original placement. Instead of first hearing my side of the story, or looking at my picture, Steven sided with his workers, accusing my family of being ?micromanagers.?

In the end, Steven apologized, and I believe that he was truly sorry for the disagreement. But, as a single female homeowner, I expect the contractors and workers who come out to my house to be considerate of my perspective. If I have a request to change something to my satisfaction - I want it changed without argument or confrontation.

"We thank [member name removed] for her review. This information is valuable to inprove our company and customer service. Our problems on this job were simple miscommunication. I went to [member name removed] house per her request, almost a week after the job was done. Before talking about why I was really there (additional gutters and heat tape) she brought up the incident about a 6' peice of gutter being crooked. Neither her or I were there during the installation. When I tried to tell her what my employees told me she thought I was arguing with her. I was not. Despite the fact that the gutter was flowing properly and only appeared to be crooked (because the house was what is actually unlevel) my men changed it to make everyone happy. I was the one that told [member name removed] that the point was mute and didn't understand why it was upsetting her. I finished my main number one mission, which was to inform her of possible future ice dams and what she could do about it. She paid me and I left. This is the second time I've had Blue Hills perform similar work; on my house a few years ago prior to selling it and on the house we subsequently purchased after box vents started to leak. I was satisfied with both experiences. Although their estimate was a bit higher than some others, I wanted to make sure a quality job was performed, and I got the impression they could/would deliver just that. They completed my average-size ranch style house in a single day. Only time will tell if the work holds up, but I don't have any complaints to this point.
In the end, everything looks great. There were a few bumps in the road throughout the project.... Everything went well, right up to the point when they were putting the downspouts on our brand new seamless gutters. We do not have a "formal" entrance into our house. What we have is an attached garage, so everyone enters through the large (car) garage door when it is open, if it isnt open, they come through the service door. Well apparently, if BHR goes by the book, the right thing to do is to put a downspout every 40 feet. The side of our garage is 40'6". Which lead the workers to believe they had to put a downspout directly in front of the service door, or in our case, the entry to our home. Not only were they told to call my husbands cell if they had ANY questions (since anyone could see that this was a terrible place for a downspout), but I was HOME when they were drilling the holes for the downspouts. Anyway, when we walked around the house that evening we immediately recognized that there could not be a downspout in front of that door. I called into the BHR office the next morning @ 7:00. When Steven (the owner) answered, I was grateful, thinking that I got to talk to the person that could approve the change that had to be made. I was sorely mistaking. I have NEVER in my 40+ years been talked to or demeaned by another person as I was that day. He started off saying that there needs to be a downspout every 40'. I told him that we can't have people stepping over a downspout when entering our home. Not only is it a tripping hazard, but in the winter, it would be a permanent ice slick. Very hazardous for us, our kids, our elderly parents, and all visitors. We went back and forth for a while, a couple of comments that stick in my head were "well there is one thing that is for sure about the winter time, is that water tends to be hard, and therefore will not be shooting out across your slab" (we have a heated garage, so the water trickles down the gutters all winter long) and "we can PATCH the hole(in our new $1500.00 gutters), but we will not warranty that gutter since it is 6" longer than the 40' requirement". There were many more comments like that, that made me feel like a real idiot. At some point, I was so angry, I hung up on Steven and called my husband. Now, I did not want to get my husband involved, because he did not care for Steven when he came to give us the estimate, I chose to call BHR because I wanted the job done all in one day. Anyway, my husband called me back very irrrate and said that Steven said right away that he would have his crew patch it, but would not pay for the new 40'6" length of gutter we would need to make it right. After getting into a long drawn out argument about the gutter and my husband being told that "you fricking people dont know anything about roofing", my husband was under the understanding that BHR was going to replace the length of gutter at their expense. Well, not so much. Later when the crew got all the other downspouts on, my husband checked with them to make sure the gutter was being replaced. They said no, that Steven told them to patch it. So another argumentative phone call to Steven, and finally the crew replaced the gutter at no extra charge to us. We were not being difficult customers by any means, we just wanted what we were paying for, and were readily available if Steven, or the crew, had any questions. They should have knocked on the door, or called. Another small issue we had is that both my husband and I both had to have a tire patched due to a roofing nail in each. On a good note, the crew was very proffessional, respectful, and polite. They did get the roof done and the gutters hung in one day, which I was very grateful for. The next day the downspouts were attached and they were done and cleaned up by noon. As of today, 2/24/2014, the roof and gutters look great, and we have had no issues. It is very hard for me to give any good ratings below after knowing the owner of this company, but to be fair to those of you looking to have your roof done, I am rating on how well we feel the job itself was done.
I am sad to see that Steven has downgraded this situation to a mere "small misunderstanding". There is NO other entrance to our house. Besides the garage, the entire house is surrounded by grass. Why was this so hard for Steven or this crew to see? I understand that the code is a downspout every 40', I understood it the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd time he told me. That did not change the fact that I cannot have an ice slick outside the entrance to my home. So now the 40' 6" piece of gutter is not warranteed. The cash settlement was negotiated when Steven delivered the quote. His quote was that much over our the quotes we had from other roofers (hence the B rating on price) Oh, and dont think that Steven did not threaten my husband to not get us our rebate before agreeing to replace the gutter. What he says took his crew "five minutes" to do, does not include at least an hour and 4 very argumentative phone calls for us to get the gutter the way it needed to be. I did not know that 4 A's, a B, and an F would still equal an A, but like I said, I am happy with the quality of work, but an F for professionalism is a huge understatement. Steven was very disrespectful to my husband and I. If this is what he calls "above and beyond", I wish I could re-do my ratings. The [member name removed].
Response from Blue Hills Roofing & Construction LLC
"I would like to thank The [member name removed] very much for the "A" grade, your assessment is greatly appreciated. There was a small misunderstanding with the gutter. We initially installed the gutter exactly to building code and manufacture specifications. Due to the extra ordinary circumstance off where the [member name removed] entrance (which we were not told it was an entrance, it literally looks like a back entrance to a garage) was/is placed. The gutter was done correctly, the client insistanted on having it stalled in an incorrect manner. I did not mean to be disrespectful to Tammi I was only trying to explain why we did it the way we did (building code and Manufacture specs), what could go wrong if done incorrectly and exploring a solution. In the end we did the down spout exactly the way they wanted it, repaced the entire 41' of gutter and paid for it out of our pocket. We also got the [member name removed] a cash settlement from defective shingles we replaced. I do believe the "F" for professionalism is a gross exageration considering all we did for them. The misunderstanding literally took five minutes out of the twelve hour job, and the client got exactly what they wanted. We went above and beyond for the [member name removed], just like we do for all our clients. I thank them again for their "A" review and will take all their information into consideration to mold our us into the best roofing company in Wisconsin. Thank you."

I woke up to find water damage on the ceiling in two different rooms. This was the first winter since we bought the house where enough snow could cause ice dams to build up. I hadn't been doing a good job of shoveling my roof, and the ice buildup was pretty substantial. I got on to Angie's List and found Blue Hills Roofing as the top reviewed company. It was a Saturday at 10am, so I figured that I'd just call and leave a message and hope that they could come Monday. Steve, the owner, picked up the phone and said that he could have his foreman out there today! Matt (the foreman) and a co-worker arrived that afternoon, and removed all snow and ice from my roof in about 90 minutes. I was extremely impressed with their professionalism (in person and on the phone), and how quickly they arrived and got the job done.
I'll definitely be using these guys for *any* roofing job in the future. I was extremely impressed.
About a week an a half later, it was leaking again. When they came back, they discovered we had a huge ice dam that was going behind our siding and under their new work. They fixed that for us as well and we are getting an estimate on gutter heating. They were prompt, efficient and neat.

This was a tough job. there was two layers of shingles to tear off. Roof was 1x6 pine boards some of which had to be replaced because they were either broken or rotted. There was a repaired chimney that had to be new flashing on it and a new cricket built. Shingles butted up against existing walls where new flashing was put on without tearing the siding off. All the guys worked very hard and there was no screwing around. Very professional work and done the certified way. I spent 40 years in construction, so I know good work when I see it. Thanks Steven!
They were on time, I believe there were 6 workers. Always someone on the ground cleaning up and helping with the roofers. We found one nail after they were all done. I can't believe it. In Rockford we were picking up nails for a year. All the workers were professional, the were as quiet as they could, were not yelling or fooling around. They worked 12 hour days to get the work done. The left the place as clean as when they arrived. Did NOT ruin any flowers or ornaments in the yard. They moved what needed to be moved and put back before they left.
