This was the single worst experience I have had in construction. John and his team were hired to build my roof deck. After six weeks of work, my wife and I were on vacation, when we came back we noticed that the team had cleared out their tools and left abruptly. And they stopped picking up my phone calls and responding to emails and messages. They were paid 80% of what was owed (the rest was due upon completion), and I think they just decided it was unprofitable to continue to do the work. I initially thought they must have overcommitted to other projects and it was just a matter of time before they come back to finish this, but I now think there is a decent chance John is an actual fraudster. When he left, there was a giant hole in my roof where the hatch goes, and I had to deal with closing that, in addition to the hundred other things they didn’t do. Who leaves a homeowner like that? Even the worst contractors are not this bad. We have since sent 93A demand letters from our lawyer and his address keeps bouncing mail. Unfortunately, I am sure it’s only a matter of time before he’ll open up shop under another name and continue to rip people off. But if you see John McGinn pop up anywhere, buyer beware. This guy needs to be in bankruptcy court, not in your house.

We have had a terrible experience with Boston Custom Remodeling (John McGinn). We paid him for work on Feb 9 and he still has not done it/hasn't fixed the problems with work he did perform. I do not recommend hiring Boston Custom Remodeling. We have a bathroom that cannot be used because of how badly the sink is leaking, and our office floor is buckling and broken. Our primary concern is how unresponsive John has been (not answering numerous phone calls/texts/emails), and that there is no plan to fix the broken/unfinished parts of our job.

At first it was going really. I was told the project would be completed in 6-8 weeks. 6 months later I was getting no return phone calls and final inspections as well as finishing work was never completed. I am now getting phone calls from lawyers threatening to sue me over construction materials used in my project (stone for the kitchen counter) that was never paid for and was the responsibility of Boston Custom Remodeling. I paid the contractor for all work and materials. They are not paying their bills.

An awful experience. The project started in early June, and by September (when BCR stopped returning my phone calls) there was still a long list of finishing errors remaining to be fixed. I will need to hire someone else to come in and clean up. I have a long list of complaints: Their workers caused damage to our neighbors’ apartment several times. They began working without having filed for the appropriate permits. The project was delayed several times along the way because poor quality work needed to be ripped out and redone. They did not clean up after themselves. Our basement is full of debris and equipment they left behind. The bottom line: STAY AWAY from these guys. Shady and unprofessional.

I do not recommend them.

They show consistently poor judgement. I can name many moments in this project where the company made poor decisions but I will offer just one: Our very large window was apparently warped and couldn't fit back into the frame they'd built. (Why they didn't realize this before they'd built the frame, I don't know.)

So we got a text saying 'the window is warped. We're going to buy a new one. If we can find one that will fit, we will install it.' We said 'OK' and never heard back, so assumed they'd found a window that would fit. We came home to a regular-sized window installed in our huge frame -- a cheap wooden-framed single-glazed window. They made up the difference with cheap lumber, so our big beautiful window was now more than 40 percent occluded by wood. When we called John to complain that we weren't happy, he argued for an hour, insisting that we'd given our approval for that.

The next day, we got a semi-conciliatory email saying he wanted to make sure we were happy with the work -- I'm guessing he finally looked at the emails and texts and realized we'd never OK'd a window that was only 60 percent the size of the hole. (Because who would do that?!) But he never apologized for the enormous disruption that he screw up made in our lives.

Getting the proper window then took more than 4 months. John originally insisted we shouldn't work with Harvey windows -- it would be too expensive and take too long -- we should work his guy who would make a custom window... for more than $1,000. And he kept saying he wasn't hearing back from Harvey. But when we finally gave up and called Harvey ourselves, it took just two weeks and cost only as much as the crappy little wooden window (about $350).

The whole project was like that -- John was very inconsistent about returning calls or emails, his workers would show up or not show up without any warning. The window is finally in but it's crooked -- there's an inch difference in the depth of the sill on on the left side from the right side.

Even the little things were done poorly. The painter didn't trim the grapefruit-sized globs of insulation that had oozed out of the exterior trim. He painted over them, instead. It would have been a matter of minutes to trim them off but instead we had to call them back -- again -- to trim the insulation boogers and paint over the bare spots left behind.

The project went smooth with Boston Custom Remodel. I was very happy with their management and detail. We completed a renovation on our home in the cape with a different contractor in 13' and we felt like we were totally on our own with product selections and material choices. We swore on the next project we would hire a "full service" company and luckily that's exactly what we got with Boston Custom Remodel. From day 1 they were great with helping choose the perfect faucets, vanity, kitchen stone, and tile. In a way we felt like we had a designer on-staff with us. The quality of their work is fabulous but I think that is to be expected at this price point; It's the design assistance and attention to detail that sets them apart. We completed a complete kitchen re-design without an architect and instead really leaned on Dennis & John for their opinions. Everything came out great and we know we made the right choice. A+

The project went just as we expected after reading the online reviews for this company. Communication was an A+ and the quality of the work was also great. The only negative during the project was a few days delay during inspections by the city but it wasn't the builders fault. We were happy with the work and would hire them again for a future project.

I have to say, the entire ordeal was made far easier by Boston Custom Remodeling. As you can imagine it was an absolute nightmare to come home to a flooded condo (which we had renovated already in 2014). We had nowhere to turn and really had no idea how to handle it. We called our insurance company and they came out and gave us an estimate for under $15,000 in work. They excluded a great deal of items and stated that certain walls and electrical that were clearly in the path of the water didn't need to be replaced. We knew right away that this was not acceptable and a friend recommended Boston Custom Remodeling. They came in literally the next day and provided us a full written estimate breaking down all of the work. They went to battle with the insurance company on our behalf and ended up getting us over $50,000 from the insurance company. They even got the insurance company to pay for 2 weeks of hotels while the demo and dirty work was being done. I could not have been more happy with how Boston Custom Remodeling handled the situation. On top of all that, the work was done carefully and with great quality. Their employees are genuinely nice guys and I felt fine having them in our home when we weren't around. I would 100% hire Boston Custom Remodeling again and I couldn't be more pleased with their company.

We wanted to do both bathrooms at the same time as we rent out part of the home and the tenant was away for 2 weeks. We realized that it would be impossible to do the entire project in the two weeks they were away, but BCR did a great job in getting the dirty part of the project complete under the tight time frame. Overall the project took about 6 weeks start to finish to complete both bathrooms which we thought was fair. The quality of the work was great and BCR did a good job helping us choose tile, plumbing fixtures, and other items. We felt as if we had someone guiding us from start to finish which is nice. I would hire them again and have already recommended them to our neighbors.

This company made the entire process from start to finish smooth and enjoyable. Any questions or concerns I had were promptly answered when I called or emailed the project managers. Making selections for appliances, fixtures, tile and stone was sort of a headache to source out on my own, but with the help and suggestions/recommendations that John made, all areas of my unit came out looking like an ad from a luxury home magazine without the headache! Overall I am 100% satisfied and would recommend them if you are looking for a contractor.

Boston Custom remodel was phenomenal. Very high end materials at a reasonable price. We had the following installed: marble tile, custom cabinets, marble countertops,built-in shelving, under-cabinet lighting, frameless glass shower door, shower jet system, radiant floor heat. All done to my satisfaction.

It went really well and we are pleased with the final product. We have additional work to be done to renovate an attic space and plan to hire Boston Custom Remodeling again. 1. Bathroom: The team performed the work quickly and with care. In particular, the attention to detail on the tile work and carpentry is excellent. 2. Windows: the basement windows required extra build-out and re-enforcement with pressure treated wood and some cement/stone work and this was performed with a great deal of attention to detail and quality. 3. Kitchen: A great amount of care and attention to detail was performed to ensure that the countertops were aligned properly with the existing cabinetry. Some custom cabinetry was required to support the new layout of the appliances, new sink and plumbing. 4. Electrical: the electrical work was performed efficiently, adding new recessed lighting to the living room where none existed before.

They accomplished the job smoothly and professionally. The result was exactly what I wanted. I have since asked them to remodel a bathroom in a few months. I have referred them many times and will continue to do so. John and Dennis are considerate, punctual, professional, and eager to please, and very concious of their goal to build a strong reputation.

John and Dennis did an incredible job renovating my home. The quality of the work was top notch but more than anything they maintained the schedule and completed everything on-time (there were some delays for inspections but they warned me in advance). I was most impressed with their attention to detail and e-mail updates documenting everything. They maintained an allowance schedule on all materials for the entire project and at the end I received a credit off the last payment. I highly recommend them.

Everything went great. John and his team showed up when they said they would (as a matter of fact, one worker showed up a day early and did some prep). The work is quality. And John and his team was very hands on and made absolutely sure I was satisfied with everything. I would absolutely use Boston Custom Remodeling, and I suggest you do too.
