Outdoor Lighting - Plan and Install, Outdoor Lighting Repair, Designer - Landscape,

About us

We are a small owner operated company. Gwyny began in 1980 helping the church ladies with assorted garden tasks. Licensed since 1997, in the C27 Landscape category, we enjoy making the best of your home and yard via requested or recommended improvements. Our focus in not on weekly maintenance as there are plenty of those crews to select from. However our Estate Care is a service that augments the tasks of your regular mow/blow group. Fertilizing, cultivating and proper hand pruning are not often accounted for in the weekly system. Our tree crew is highly trained in safety and proper shaping and pruning of our local trees. Leo has been with us since 2003 and in the tree industry himself for over 30 years. His brother, Joaquin is equally as skilled with 32+ years as a professional tree climber. Our on staff ISA Arborist has 35 years in the industry, locally. Our sprinkler work is geared to proper head to head coverage with quality, professional grade products and follow up service for adjustments and finishing touches. I refer other subcontractors as needed, you pay them directly if you choose to hire them, as there is no mark-up on their fees. Estimates are free, work is bid based on materials needed and the amount of time estimated to complete a job to proper trade standards and customer expectations. When applicable, estimates are broken down into materials & labor charges for easy comparison with other estimates you may get. Angie's list members are given top priority in scheduling. I believe we can beat any written bid from another similarly licensed and insured tradesman using high quality professional grade materials. We have award winning garden installations in Pasadena and Arcadia.

The crew was right on time, worked quickly and cleanly. They communicated well at every level. Any problems and changes to the work being done were immediately brought to my attention for approval. The project was executed as well as I expected, and then some.

It went very well. First, Gwyny came, looked over the job and gave an estimate very quickly. Second, the foreman came to the house on the day before the job was to be done and also looked over what was required. On the agreed date, the complete crew arrived on time. They did an excellent job, as agreed. The crew also cleaned up the entire area, and left it absolutely free of debris. The foreman and his crew were also very courteous and pleasant. I would use Bottoms Up again anytime I would need a tree or landscaping service, without any hesitation.

When they were scheduled to come they did a great job. But sometimes they would come when they weren't scheduled and I didn't like that. Sometimes they would come when I wasn't at home and then send me the invoice and i never knew if they did work or not. To any perspective customer make sure you keep tabs on when they come and what they do. They are insured and bonded which is nice but that adds to the price-- which is a positive.

"Wow, [Member name], I am sorry you did not like the last quote I gave you to return your yard to the condition you would like it in. Our arrangement was to do monthly follow up after the once over clean up. The boys erred on the side of service and came every month as agreed. As you recall, you let us go once before to use another service provider. He was apparently expensive and not so regular. You asked us to return and we did. We re-cleaned the palette to all our standards and started back in 2012. Although you have no lawn, you have two complicated yards with all the ground covers, plants to trim around, pine needles, meandering and uneven pathways, dozens of yard lights, weeds, Ivy, neighbor trees to prune back and new dog activity. And a busy street where weeds and seeds blow in regularly. The yard has gotten way out of control and even more so with the heat killing off the ground cover. Our walk about (after 9 weeks of not having us) left me with no choice but to re-bid a clean-up. My follow up comments also said that allowing us to actually do the maintenance every month for the $125 would prevent this from happening. I understand you were not happy about the July billing as you thought they hadn't come. That said, this would be a clean-up on a yard left completely un-tended for 13-14 weeks. There are very few yards that can withstand that much time with zero attention and not require starting over. The main purpose of having our detailed service is to keep you neat and tidy and not slide back into disrepair. As you mentioned the can wasn't full for $125, often the boys hauled away a bag of needles and trimminga and left the remnants in your can. Somewhere along those lines, a client has to agree to let us perform our services. I am sad that you are not happy. Hope my mom doesn't see this D grade. I won't get out of my room for a month. Best to you moving forward. Gwyny Pett ~ Owner"

"Thank you for taking time to comment on your experience with us. I truly appreciate the effort involved. The "C" grade for Responsiveness begs the question : How So ? I arrived April 8th on time for our appointment/estimate. Your hunny didn't know I was coming and said you forgot. The door was closed and I calmly waited for you nearly 20 minutes. I prepared and sent an itemized estimate to cover the various options discussed. We emailed back and forth for over 2 weeks determining what you wanted to have us do. You apologized for changing the scope of work until you could come to an agreement at home on what you both wanted. We agreed to get the irrigation in order as you were "embarrassed to run it in the current condition and waste water." I scheduled you 3 weeks after that at our first opening for the requested non-emergency irrigation repairs. The boys and I came out, moved, straightened, added heads, totally re-worked the irrigation and left you with no leaks, no water running down the street, a new manifold and proper head to head coverage. We completed all the repair work you inherited from the last installer for less than estimated. Meanwhile, your Hunny said that you had talked and changed your mind and we were supposed to be doing the planting also. It is pretty much too hot for that right now and you are not under the time clock for Turf Removal. Then I waited 26 days to get paid. I make every effort to be tuned in to my end of the efficiency quotient and giving what I promise. Though we are booked and busy, I don't believe we are "C" quality in the Responsiveness category. Are you certain it was our company you are referring to for that Responsiveness Grade of "C" ? And, if our response efforts were so poor, why did you select us to work with ? Warm Regards ~ Gwyny Pett ~ Owner"

We interviewed a number of landscapers prior to meeting with Gwyny, the owner of Bottoms Up Gardens. However, none of the other landscapers quite matched Gwyny?s knowledge and level of expertise for creating a drought-free landscape. Once we agreed to pursue with her services, Gwyny set up a date for service. Gwyny and her entire crew arrived promptly at 8 a.m. (the agreed upon time), and went right to work. Although there was some noise with the rototiller, there was almost no sound from the backyard once it was turned off??as each member of the crew quietly worked in harmony to complete the project. Before leaving, the crew cleaned off every speck of dirt from our driveway.
All in all, Bottoms Ups performed a superb job with our landscape!
Thank you [member name removed] for writing a report and [member information removed] for calling us both times and just being happy in general with our service. You know, I am not all about self gratification, however it is nice to hear that we are doing good things for the people we aim to serve. I worked for Pantry Market when I was 16 and all I heard was "Service is Everything" So it was an early lesson that has served me well. Thank goodness of course that my amazing crew of helpers also knows that a happy customer is a repeat customer. They are a huge part of the well-oiled machine that gets things done here. So many thank yous for reporting on your experience with us. It means so much to me. Truly. Gwyny Pett ~ Owner"

I had met with the owner of Bottoms Up, Gwyny a few weeks prior...she was very friendly and knowledgeable and made me feel confident that her team would do a great job. They did. Her 3 man crew arrived on time and after I showed them the trees, they immediately began their work. They were all so friendly, courteous, hard working, and very meticulous...after they left, the trees looked great, and the area around the trees was completely cleaned up and tidy....the only evidence that they had been there, was that the trees looked perfect! I would definitely use Bottoms Up again!
Gwyny, the service provider, is easy to reach by phone and e-mail. Someone was sent out for an estimate because water was pooling near the side of the house and some sprinkler heads were not firing. The price was good and she seemed to have a solution to the problem. I rated punctuality as an "A" even though they had to cancel once. That was understandable as there was a shut down on the 210 freeway. We rescheduled and punctuality was not an issue.
Gwyny does have a personality. I found it refreshing and amusing.
This is a rental property and the tenants have had no complaints after the work was completed.
Communication with Gwyny was prompt and clear from the beginning--she quickly provided an estimate that included various options (including steps that had not occurred to me, but were very necessary), with the elements of the job separately priced, so I could select among them. She and her workers showed up when scheduled, worked very diligently, and thoroughly cleaned the area afterwards. I appreciated her input on how best to coordinate their work with the installation of fencing around the same area, and her flexibility in scheduling the work so that the combined taskes were performed in a logical sequence. I reserved the fun and creativity of planning the plantings for myself, but I couldn't have done so without the beautifully prepared blank canvas provided by Bottoms Up! (And who doesn't love that name!?!)
Summary: the job went exceptionally well, and we will likely be hiring Gwyny/Bottoms Up again. I'm sheepish about publishing this report more than a year late, but I hope it helps inform other potential customers.
Gwyny and her team were by far the most approachable and professional of the five separate contractors interviewed for these jobs. Her consultation was eager, friendly, and upfront; she also provided a lot of useful insight and ready answers to questions. The crew she brought to the house consisted of her, a foreperson, and the rest of the crew (perhaps ~4 total crew). During the first visit, Gwyny was on-site much of the time, also providing physical labor alongside the crew; she left the work in the hands of the foreperson, which was fine. Her crew communicated with us clearly and often - we also left the house for a short time, and they worked perfectly well on their own. The crew also worked independently, in parallel, on separate parts of the job. The tree removal was a worrisome point for us, but her explanations and the crew's ability made it very simple, with no incidents or threat of danger to property or person. Her line-item price for tree removal was incidentally the lowest of the lot we interviewed, although her overall price was not; the total quote was about middle-of-the-road. There were no surprises during the job, and the work order and process went exactly as quoted.
During the second visit, the crew was run by the irrigation expert, and Gwyny did not work on-site. However, the process was just as smooth and professional as the first visit. It is significant to note that the plantings are all successful more than a year on, and the irrigation works as planned. I've only made small changes to the emitters to alter the flowrate/water delivery based on personal preference.
We plan to have Gwyny back to help us plant fruit trees on the property. She calls herself the "Outdoor Cleaning Lady", and this was certainly true (our property was put in a pristine state) but she's also much more. Find some time in her schedule and hire her!

Response from Bottoms Up Gardens
"WHOA ! Never too late for good news. I am in awe that you reached back in time to take on such a detailed and intricate commentary and in the midst of working and raising your kids. Your extreme detail made me feel like I was there in your yard again. I am even more pleased that you are still enjoying the benefits of our visits. That was quite a year with shoulder surgery and the ensuing details . . . I like that you have taken an interest in your yard and continue to monitor the water and tend the plantings we installed. Afterall, it is a team effort. Many thank yous for your engaging and very colorful explanation of our work in your yard. You and your hunny are simply awesome ! Warm Regards ~ Gwyny"

My giant palms were due for trimming. One of them actually needed to be removed because it was pushing against the wrought iron fence. I contacted 3-4 tree service companies to come out for estimates. One of them didn't show up. Of the three that did, i picked Bottoms Up because they were the most prompt in emailing me an estimate. Not only did they gave me an estimate for my palms, they walked through my property and provided estimates on other trees that needed to be worked on. I corresponded with the owner, Gwyneth, the entire time and she was absolutely professional and knowledgeable. On job day, the crew showed up on time, everyone was courteous and professional. Gwyneth came out to inspect the job and helped out as needed. The job was done properly and surrounding area was cleaned. Will definitely us them again in the future.
"Warm thank yous for taking time to evaluate our works, [member name removed] ! Leo and his brother, Joaquin have been tree pruners since the mid 1980's. They have worked extensively in and on local trees in Southern California. I am honored to have them on my staff and Leo for nearly 11 years. Do you know how to get a good job on your trees ? Hire a company that has the SAME crew year after year. You will have the same technician sculpting and training your trees as needed and as beneficial to the tree and the surrounding yard. So often, people assume that contracting with their gardener for all extra works is a good idea. Unless the gardener is the climber and trained artist with a saw (and properly insured), he is simply marking up the cost of that work and having a friend do the work. And, if it isn't the same friend each time, you will have a different set of hands and visions working on your precious trees. Trees add a tremendous amount of value to our landscapes. They breathe through their foliage and when too much is removed at one time (as in a severe hack job or topping) they suffer for lack of foliage which is their vehicle for the transference of nutrients. In order to revive themselves, they are forced to produce a huge batch of new growth at the site of the cut to reinvigorate their ability to take in carbon dioxide and "breathe" again. This is why a heavily cut tree responds by putting forth a bush at the end of each branch and sometimes along the lateral branches. As a tree owner, when you are trying to reduce a tree size or future maintenance involved, nothing is gained by forcing a big batch of new limbs to generate from each cut. Additionally, once trees are badly cut or over-pruned, they do not have an opportunity to regain the natural shape and figure that is intended for their ongoing development. Thank you again for investing time in selecting a suitable contractor for your tree needs AND commenting on your experience with us. Sincerely, Gwyny Pett ~ Owner"
