They were very thorough and went over with me that they were going to do and engaged me in the process. The staff was very good. There was this one guy who took his time to have discussions with me. He also called me on the telephone to make sure that I understood everything that was going on. They also took their time to follow up which was good.

I think their price is competitive to the market. They were very responsive.

Debbie, the AC&R salesperson, was very knowledgeable and confident. They were the 2nd quote I got for work and came in even lower than I expected (which gave me pause as a low bid is a red flag). But true to her word, they did the work professionally (mostly...see below) and promptly. While I had another company do the energy audit for the Pepco rebate, AC&R took over the work, did the blown fiberglass one day and the spray foam the next.

For the blown fiberglass in the attics above our additions, they added spray foam (from a can) around any gaps per the contract and foam board baffles at the soffits. The installer noted that all our soffits were blocked and the batting insulation was too wide for the rafter channels, so he leveled it out as best he could to ensure an even coating of blown insulation. At the end, he sealed up the gaps between the attic and our to-be-finished upstairs (cape cod style, so all one room).

For the spray foam insulation, the team came in the next day, and I had to be out of the house due to fumes. I did come back around noon as they expected to be done well before then. They didn't know I came in and I went to the back of the house to watch TV on my work break. The one annoyance was during their cleanup, one of the installers came down into our kitchen and then saw me. He said he was looking for a vacuum cleaner to clean the stairs. I told him don't worry about the carpet as it was getting pulled up, but this was the one piece of unprofessionalism I noted above. Contractors should NEVER use the homeowner's property; they should bring their own tools, including vacuums!

While the spray foam can get very messy, they kept the splatter mostly contained to inside the crawlspace, not the finished flooring. However, I was surprised that they didn't tape off the outlet covers or light switched. since the particles are so small, we're going to have to replace the switches/receptacles at our cost. Also, there was a storm door screen that wasn't covered and now needs cleaned. Basically, I think they should have taken more care in covering the very few items we left upstairs and the outlets/switches.

They didn't spray around the window frames (large gaps where window weights used to be) because the open cell foam would expand too much. If I wasn't there, I think they would have just left, but it was clear in our contract discussions they needed to insulate those spaces too. They used a few cans of "Good Stuff" equivalent, but didn't fill in the gaps entirely. It did the job well enough, but it's a ding against them as I expected more preparation.

Lastly, I thought that AC&R would walk me through all the scheduling and final "test out" (for the Pepco rebate), but I had to contact them and schedule with someone different each time. They were always prompt, but I expect the experts to know to do this for/with me rather than expect me to know the process. I go through it once in a lifetime while they do it weekly.

While the end of the review sounds more negative than positive, I would definitely recommend AC&R out to others as they're priced right, they have been in business for over a century, and like any contractor, you just need to follow up to be sure everything is done to your satisfaction.
They were prompt and courteous. The job took almost two full days. Of course it was expensive, like all closed cell insulation, but we got four estimates and this company offered to spray it in thicker than the other companies (in the ceiling for about the same price). The other companies told us that anything in excess of 2" is not worth the money in energy savings or basically is overkill - and they charged a whole lot more to add the extra depth. AC&R sprayed in five or more inches of insulation in the ceiling rather than the three inches that the other companies offered. Now it is finished and right away you can tell it is super tight! On a hot day the other day the place felt like an icebox! The insulation is not soft and mushy. It feelis a bit like one of those styrofoam coolers but a bit stronger and stiffer. One very minor thing is that they had left the staples in the studs where they had put up the plastic sheeting to protect areas not being sprayed, but I should be able to pull or pound them in before drywall goes on. They were careful not to produce a lot of overspray in areas not meant to be sprayed with plastic sheeting on the floor and elsewhere, plus they covered all the outlets before proceeding. Afterwards they did a good job of shaving down the excess flush to the studs and did a great job with clean up. If we were to do it again we'd use them. And we are fairly picky.

Due to a previous job running longer than planned, our 3-day job had to be rescheduled. As it turned out, that was more convenient for us, anyway. I only mention it to remind folks that this sort of thing can happen.

The first day, they sucked out the old insulation. That seemed to go pretty well, but I did notice that several pockets of the old stuff were left in place, here and there. Maybe it could have been done a bit better.

Day 2 was foam sealing of the tops and bottoms of the walls. This was done by a subcontractor, who arrived saying that they didn't understand the job they were supposed to do. A call to AC&R resulted in a visit from their "Foam Superintendent" within an hour and everything was straightened out. Since there is a fair amount of set-up time for the foaming operation, no time was lost in waiting for the superintendent. The difficulty was chalked up to a difference in terminology between the two companies. Presumably, they now speak the same language.

Day 3 was blowing in the new insulation, along with the installation of some contraptions between the rafters to allow the eave vents to continue to breathe through all the fluff, and some batt-style insulation over all the catwalk areas in the attic.

Each day, when they left, the place was relatively clean, except for a few bits of insulation fluff in the hallway, under the attic access hatch. No real problem, there.

We've only had one night with our new insulation, but the house does seem more comfortable. This operation took us from having about 3-4 inches of matted 70-year-old mineral wool to 19 inches of nice new fluffy fiberglass. We are expecting a significant decrease in climate control costs, along with increased comfort.

There was a problem initially with the radiant barrier installation - the first crew of two were installing 30" wide rolls lengthwise along the roof end to end instead of from ridge to eave as the manufacturer recommends and made a couple of other minor mistakes which were easily corrected. After talking to the manufacturer, the sales rep offered to take out what had been installed and re-install according to spec or continue as already done with sealing of all seams and a discount on the job. Done this way, the foil would not have the insulation properties per spec but would provide the radiant barrier I desired. I chose the letter option and the barrier work was continued by another crew on the 2nd day. On the 3rd day the crew finished up with the barrier then blew in the installation.

With the exception of the initial problem, the work was done neatly and professionally by courteous workmen who cleaned up completely after the job was done.

After getting estimates from the three top-ranked Angie's List insulation companies, it was clear that AC & R was the best choice. They definitely did not disappoint. They arrived on time at our house and proceeded to finish the job in approximately 1/2 day. They were neat and clean and left the house in perfect order. My husband was home for the whole process and said that they did any excellent job. We are very happy with the workmanship and gladly gave them the highest ratings.

When I first contacted the company I had left a message on the answering machine for the sales rep in my area. After three days I called back, this time I spoke with him directly. We made an appointment for him to come to my house for an appraisal but it needed to be rescheduled due to bad weather. When it came time for the work crew to install the insulation it was rescheduled at the last minute, apparently the two work crews were both having issues at the current job sites and it was taking longer to do than anticipated. Once the crew showed up at my house to do the work they were done in one hour, including cleaning up after themselves. Except for rescheduling both the appraisal and the actual work everyone I was in contact with was very pleasant and professional. The work was completed quickly and they did a very good job.

This company was by far the best of 3 estimates I got to install an extra 9" of cellulous fiber blown in attic insulation to achieve R-30 level. This was not a big attic area about 500 sq fee in a town home. I scheduled appointment, estimator was very professional answered my questions and explained options and installation process. Installers were through, efficient and worked quickly. Job took about 2 hours. I inspected the finished job, they answered my questions and cleaned up afterwards. I'm pleased with results.

I felt so confident with these people that I had no need to double check their work. I live in a smaller townhouse and sometimes I know some companies don't like to take on the small jobs but this company had no hesitation at all and they were great to work with.

I quickly received an estimate on adding insulation to a colonial. The work was scheduled shortly after that. (~1-2 weeks from what I remember). Workers arrived on time and were pleasant. Part of the job included one of the workers climbing through a hole in a ceiling, since there was no access to the attic in that section of the house. That attic section was also the only access to the area above a cathedral ceiling. They spent quite a bit of time making sure that there was insulation between all the beams in the roof above the cathedral ceiling. This insulation makes a huge difference. Initially it was the initial 1965 insulation, ~1 1/2 inch thick and absent in sections. Now it is R44 and was a great investment. It was well worth the cost considering they insulated a large colonial in addition to a section of house that was not easily accessible and took more time than expected. They did not charge more than the estimate.

It went very well. They came in, ran a tube through our window, went in the attic, blew in the insulation and adding batting to the back of our crawl space entrance and left. It took less time than they quoted and they were extremely professional. We were very happy with them.

We're having significant work done to our newly purchased row house before moving in. When our general contractors opened the 2nd floor ceiling and exposed the attic area, we found that there was no evidence of ever having had the space insulated. I was able to call AC&R, complete the estimate with Scott by phone/email, and coordinate installation timing with our HVAC and general contractors. The installers arrived at the very end of their stated time window and then had trouble with getting their equipment to function properly. That said, once everything was working, the job was completed very efficiently. We had two openings cut for the installers, and they were able to fill almost the entire attic space with insulation (exception of the bathroom area past our skylight, which was not possible to access without an additional ceiling penetration). Payments were processed on my credit card as expected. Overall a very easy transaction. A bit more expensive than I'd hoped for a 460-480 sq ft attic space, but not outrageous. Will certainly consider using them to do additional insulation in our sleeper porch and basement when we remodel.

"Thank you for posting your report. It is extremely helpful in determining where we can improve. Although we carefully maintain our equipment, there are times when it does not cooperate and I am sorry you experienced problems in that regard. However, it sounds like the remainder of the job went well. I hope you will see significant energy savings and additional comfort due to the insulation. Please consider us for the next stage of your remodeling and don't forget to take your tax credit!"

The attic measured 1700 sq. ft. The double-batt insulation was 40-years old and had been contaminated with animal droppings. The two-man crew took two days to remove the old insulation and one day to install styrovents around the soffit vents and blow in fiberglass to a depth of 19.1 inches (R49). They bagged and hauled away the old material and cleaned up the surroundings. The men worked diligently and, fortunately, benefited from cool days in late September for working in an attic without a floor. Because they drove from Frederick, MD to the job site in Virginia near Mount Vernon, traffic conditions delayed their arrival no more than half an hour outside the 9-9:30 AM window, which was not a problem since I am retired. I enjoyed meeting the men, who were pleasant and courteous in addition to performing their job in a professional manner.
