So this is a strange situation. I had a pretty good experience with Carlos the first time around in 2014 and so when I was looking for a plumber for my 1500 sqft addition, I contacted Carlos for a quote. But he went AWOL after giving me two quotes and met 3-4 times, and stopped returning calls when I was about to hire him. I'm still at a loss as to what happened and would love to get an explanation from him if he's monitoring this forum. The way he went radio silent was really unprofessional.
Here's the story:
In 2014, after interviewing 5-7 plumbers to fix a section of broken mainline, I found Carlos Herrera on Angie's List. He came out quickly, gave an amazing quote compared to the others which were at least twice as much. He communicated well enough (though not perfectly, the texting response could be inconsistent and there's I'd say 5% of issue regarding language since I don't speak Spanish but it's minor). I liked the fact that he and his son do their own work, and he's licensed. They came out, finished the work in two days as he said, did the little things I asked for (covered up crawl space and sealing holes left behind around pipes by the terrible house flipper that sold us the house) and that was that. I was happy about the decision.
Then in 2015 I was starting my 1500 sqft addition, and Carlos was on top of my list for the rough and finish plumbing. I got a quote from him, and the pricing was again on the lower end. I got a number of other quotes, and the next bid was a couple of thousand dollars more. The quotes came in (all in) in the $18000-$30000 range. (Though I did get a quote of $50k. Crazy. Goes to show the construction industry has no standard...get a lot of pricing, people.)
Anyways, I was leaning strongly towards hiring Carlos, met him a couple of times myself to discuss the quotes. Then Carlos went AWOL for the first time after I asked for references. He said he'll get it to me and then he went radio silent, not returning my emails or calls or text for several weeks. And finally I left a message and said that I'm moving on to someone else if he doesn't contact me. And he finally did.
Ok, it was my fault that I decided to let that slide and never asked him about what happened. Then I decided to hire a GC because this is my first building project and I don't have a construction background. I asked Carlos to come out and meet my GC, before we could move ahead. He did. The three of us discussed everything, and ever discussed the date for the first portion of the job. Then, he went AWOL again. No text, no email, no call. The GC and I called and texted to ask when he'll start and nothing. No response whatsoever. Not even an excuse such as "sorry but I am too busy now" or whatever.
I was left to scramble to find someone else. At the end we did find a good plumber for a similar pricing. But that took time. Though I'm glad that I was forced by Carlos to switch before we started. It could be more trouble if he had left mid way. And because he went AWOL twice, I wonder what else might have happened, and what else I should have doubted about his work.
I'm still open for a reasonable explanation. Perhaps he got too popular and was making too much money, and regretted his original quote to me. Perhaps there's a personal issue. Perhaps he doesn't want to work under a GC. Perhaps he didn't like my GC. Perhaps he doesn't want to work for me any more. No idea. Regardless, I expect him to man up and call me, and say sorry but goodbye. Dumping a client by "ghosting"? Come on. That might be for teenagers breaking up but is a pretty stupid thing to do for a plumber. It's so puzzlingly. Carlos: if you are reading this, why not respond below and tell people your side of the story?. I'm very curious about this strange turn of event.
