Michael came out on April 2 and gave me and estimate for the job. I gave him a $600 deposit. I need to have masonry completed on the porch before the railings could be installed. The masonry work was completed on April 8. I contacted Chris on April 9 to inform him to put me on his calendar for the installation to be completed in a couple of weeks. He contacted me and said that he would install them on April 13. On April 13 I received a message from him stating that he had to go out of town for a family emergency. I let him know that it was fine and I would look to hear from him the following week. After I did not hear from him I sent him a text message to find out when he plan to install the railings. He texted me back on April 20 and said that he was still out of town and he was have to put all of his projects on hold because he would be gone for a while. He said that is I wanted a refund for my deposit he would send it to me asap. I responded and told him that I would like a refund since he did not know how long he would be gone. I also told him that we would draw up another contract upon his return. On April 27 I texted him again to inform him that I have not received my refund and I have not heard anything from him. I ask him to give me an update as to when I can expect it. I have not heard anything from him.

The installation was excellent! The front porch looks infinitely better. The company was extremely responsive, punctual, and flexible to our needs.

After 11 years in our home, our wood deck railing showed significant rotting. For both aesthetic and safety reasons, we decided it was time to bite the bullet and completely replace the original railing (the deck base did not need repair, as it is a composite material). I saw an ad in the Angie's List monthly magazine for Carolina Deck, Fence and Rail. Chris, the owner, responded very quickly to my phone inquiry, and came out to give us an estimate very soon thereafter. It was obvious that he knew his stuff, so we felt very comfortable hiring him. He was professional, hard-working, and friendly. He did take longer to get to our job than had been estimated, but we were not really in any hurry. On the agreed upon day, Chris worked non-stop until the job was completed. The new railing and posts look great, and we feel good that we now have a product that can withstand the elements. I would highly recommend Chris and Carolina Deck, Fence & Rail.
Owner seemed very knowledgable, brought samples of materials used and pictures of other jobs, was BBB accredited, and offered a lifetime guarantee. And, he seemed like a nice guy. He gave us a quote, and requested a $2000 down payment, which was reasonable, and we paid on 6/5/2013. He did not start the project until mid-July, and, it took almost 3 weeks and a couple reminder calls to complete, not the 7-10 days he claimed. But, delays can be expected with any job, and there were some rainy days as well. Some of his workers were messy-trampled flowers, drink cups, fast food wrappers left around, etc., but again, these things happen.
However, more bothersome was his continual requests for more money upfront before supplies could be purchased or work done. He even stated that he had to go to Virginia to purchase some supplies. This raised concern that his credit with suppliers might not be good, raising even greater concern that the job would stop midstream, and we would be out of luck (this happened to us before with a contractor who went bankrupt). But, we paid when asked, even on one day's notice. By the time the job was "complete", we had paid out over 90%. The final amount of $1000 was paid on 8/2/13. After the fact, we found that the railing "caps" were not glued down, and also noticed some mis-aligned boards. After multiple contacts, he finally got the caps glued down earlier this year. But, now, over a year later, and after multiple contacts and promises to come out, we are still waiting for the mis-aligned boards to be fixed.
We are easy people to get along with, even waiting this long to post a review as requested by Angie's List, in order to give him every opportunity to address this issue! And, under the assumption that he would follow thru with our repairs, we had actually referred him to a co-worker. His work COULD be considered good if he had completed it, and we would give better ratings. But, we would definitely not use this contractor again. And, we have serious doubts that the "lifetime guarantee" would be honored should there be any defects.
It was a great experience. He was able to get everything taken down and replaced in a couple of days. They had to tear down the old wood, pour concrete, and put up the new porch. I love it. I don’t have to worry about much maintenance. They showed up on the day he promised and went right to work. I was very pleased.
