I could write a long story about this contractor, but I will keep it brief. I would not use him again or recommend anyone else do so for several reasons.
Overall, quality construction with a few last items not completed to my satisfaction (interior paint, floor finish and install) but I gave up getting him to do it and hired a handyman to finish painting. I will need to hire a floor guy to fix poorly installed antique, refinished floor boards.
He subcontracted everything out; overall good subcontractors but at very high cost
Very slow to complete due to off/on scheduling, inefficient work pace and changes mid project that should have been planned for in advance, which delayed the project. A 6 month project took 1.5 years.
Hard to communicate with; he often wouldn't take calls on his cell or return calls promptly; leading to lack of and miscommunication and some costly errors/redos.
No written change orders despite his contract requiring them; so unclear what was included in budget and what was change order and what costs were associated. This inevitably led to conflict and diagreement over the charges he demanded I pay.
He expected me to pay out of pocket for overages, even on previously agreed upon and bank-approved and budgeted items or he would threaten to stop work, file a lien against me.
Seemed he had several projects going on and work was inefficient with multiple re-dos due to poor planning and lack of communication (windows installed 3 times due to original mislocation by architect, then moved due to redesign of house height/roof).
Removed roof despite it not being on permit(he should have known this) and town stopped work and I had costly delays and hearings to get work resumed but then bad weather and snow stopped work.
End result was good overall but a $300K project cost $650K for an 1800sf 3 BR 2.5 bath modest house, not including finishes and fixtures. Excessively high cost per SF. I could have built the house from nothing for far less than the remodel cost. I had to eliminate several features I wanted to reduce costs(left basement unfinished, no built-in cabinetry). I do not dispute that mid-project changes greatly improved the design and value of the house, but they were not planned ahead of time so I could budget. I am sure the contractor knew what would happpen during the project but chose not to fully disclose these changes in advance so he could get his foot in the door; then they cost much more.
Ended up disputing costs with him and then with my attorney and getting some reduction in price (about 25K out of what I felt was $150K in unjustified overcharges) but he was very immature about that agreement, threatened liens, sent insulting emails calling me a "fraud" with "champagne tastes and a beer budget" (after spending the above amount AND paying out of pocket for all fixtures, finishes, and appliances as well as his overcharges....not a fair or professional way to behave in my opinion. Friends who hired him have had similar experience.
I would definitely hire this group again. They were professional, friendly and trustworthy. They quoted a reasonable price, stuck to it and made sure all the punch list items were complete before they left. The quality of work was very good and they stuck to their time frame. Again, the best recommendation I can give is that I would definitely hire them again.
Nothing went right from day one. It was a massive reno that was going be an approximate cost of over 150,000. The contractor budgeted 10,000 for the electrician and when I fired him he billed me 1250 for additional work. When he had not even finished what I had thought he was supposed to have done yet. The plumber was about the only thing that went right. He went above and beyond. The contractor said he would be out by august 19th. We originally wanted him out on the first but he said he would need some more time. But that was not a big deal. I ended up firing him on September 1st. I had given him many outs over the course of the renovation but he did not take them.
Many problems with the throughout the whole process. Anytime he could he would add something on and jack up the price. It has been a nightmare. Literally everything is wrong. Doors hang very high off the ground. Cracks in the walls/wholes where things were removed from the walls. Kitchen cabinets were wrong. He tried to re-sand them/stain them. Among many Many other things.

"The customer's review is a gross misrepresentation - Not truthful. This has become a legal matter which will be worked out in court. We feel that we were not treated fairly at all. Customer was aware of delays as they were a result of the customer wanting to get several of their own quotes from contractors (which is fine) but this caused the delays in work progression that we had no control over. Customer offered to pay me substantially less what was due. We are in total compliance with our contract with customer."

Not very well from the very beginning. We contacted Charlie in August 2014. He came out and talked to us and said he couldn't start until September. On September 17th we did the final measurements and I paid the deposit. Should take about two weeks...haha we laughed about that because of the movie Money Pit. In October we were going to be gone for one week. He said that was fine he would be ready and the supplies would be in so we were starting the job Oct 24th. No show no call. after a week we called. No call back but an email that we didn't see for a week. Now it's November and nothing has even been started. I finally emailed charlie asking when they would start. The receptionist called Dec 8th saying they would be delivering the supplies around 9:30 to start the job today. They did show up. Then there was some discrepancy about the window size that was ordered. Charlie told us that one of his guys didn't know what he was talking about and dismissed that any problem had happened. They worked for a little while but then needed to talk to Charlie and at 2:00 they all left. It rained the next two days so no work. Thursday they started tearing off the front siding to be replaced with cedar shingles. Then it was discovered that the front clap board was mahogany so we wanted to keep that. It would save us some money. I thought Charlie would call or sit down with us to discuss our options on this. That never happened. Charlie had told us that his people would do the job like it was their house. However that was not the case. Each night I had to re-vacuum where they had worked. The drywall compound was ground into the carpet in my room and all over the registers in each room. At one point during the Job one guy hit something on our house and blew out the whole streets electric. Work was stopped until the electric company could come and turn back on the electric. I had a bench sitting in the yard that got broken and not one of the workers told me. The plastic piece that protects the A/C wire to our house got broken and again no one would fess up. They left the drainage downspout off the house so when it rained it flooded out our garden and all the water was up against the house. We lost a lot of our mulch we had just put in the fall. This whole thing dragged out until Feb 2 2015. We were suppose to do the final walk thru. No show.Tried again on the Feb 12th. I'm not even sure it happened this day. I was so over all this. I went thru Angie's list just so this wouldn't happen. Finally Charlie sent Brian on March 2, 2015 to fix all the things that were wrong. Things still were not right. I was so angry I didn't even know what to say. I tried not to yell at the receptionist but getting a hold of Charlie on the phone is next to impossible. April 9th 2015 I finally sat down and wrote Charlie and email since that seemed to be the only thing he hears. So I wrote it all out. Still nothing from him until the receptionist called me to set up the appointment for April 26, 2015. He did show up and said he hated confrontation and this was the first he knew I was upset. Whatever! So he adjusted the bill a bit and said he would be out on Monday April 27th 2015 to fix the things that were wrong. On Monday NO CHARLIE and no phone call. When I had heard nothing nor seen anyone all week I Emailed him on Friday. I got an email and a voice message that Charlie had been sick and in bed on Monday.....What? You couldn't have called us. Our time is valuable also. He finally showed up on May 5th 2015. Fixed the things and I paid him. I just wanted this nightmare over. So Saturday June 13, 2015 I want to put the screen in my storm door and we can't get the storm window out. I called Monday June 15th,2015 left a message with the receptionist. Today is Thursday June 18th have heard nothing. I called and was not so friendly with the receptionist. I apologized to her as it's not her fault she has a Bad Boss but maybe he should call his customers. I don't recommend this company if your looking for no hassle.
"This project was done in a timely manner and the homeowners were kept aware of all phases and any delays that were created prior to the established start date. These clients changed the scope of work multiple times and we did our part to accommodate those changes. They had no complaints until the very end of the project and it was time to pay the final balance on the invoice. My project manager did meet with the clients and generated a final punch list which was completed and signed by the homeowners. They still did not provide the final payment. We as a company were caught off guard by their complaints and I feel it was an attempt to have their final invoice reduced in cost. We did our part & completed the project. After we completed the first punch list, the homeowners generated a second punch list that was irrelevant, but we completed the punch list anyway so that we could get paid. It took approximately two months for these clients to pay their invoices in full. We were very honest about aspects of the project that saved them money when we were under no obligation to do so. Our communication was clear and direct. This project simply turned into a situation where there was no pleasing the clients, and I did everything that I could to appease them. We extended them a discount, completed two punch lists and had a final walk through at which time the clients seemed happy and satisfied with our service. After the fact, they wanted us to return to the property to change the storm door glass to screen for them for the season change. We did not accommodate that due to the fact that our relationship was not amicable. Our ratings on Angie's List reflect the true way we do business and accommodate our clients. Simply put, there was no way of making these clients happy. Again, they had no complaints about the project until the end."

JOB DONE WAS EXCELLENT - THEY CLEANED UP THE AREA OF OLD CEDAR SHINGLES; INSTALLED TYVEK AND INSTALLED PVC RAKE AND REPLACED ANY CEDAR SHINGLES MISSING OR DAMAGED AROUND THE HOUSE. BRIAN AND STEVE DID AN EXCELLENT JOB OF INSTALLING THE NEW CEDAR SHINGLES AND PVC TRIM ON ONE SIDE OF THE SALT BOX HOME THAT WAS IN THE SUN AND TWO GABLE END AWNING WINDOWS. ANY ITEM THAT WAS ON THE HOME LIKE THE CENTRAL A/C LINES THAT WERE OUTSIDE THE HOME WAS PUT BACK IN A PROFESSIONAL MANNER. THEY EVEN PUT TRIM AROUND MY UTILITY BOXES A NICE TOUCH.
WOULD HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CONTRACTOR! GOOD QUALITY WORK. WE FOUND THAT THE ORIGINAL BUILDER NEVER PUT ANY FLASHING ON THE CHIMNEY. THEY INSTALLED OVER 100 FEET OF LEAD FLASHING AND OVER 13 BUNDLES OF CEDAR SHINGLES. THE CONTRACTOR WAS FROM CAPE COD BUT THEY WORK ALL OVER NEW ENGLAND. I DID HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE CONTRACTOR TO DO THE WORK BUT GOOD THINGS TAKE TIME BUT IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT.
THANK YOU CHARLIE, HOPE WE CAN HAVE YOU COME BACK AND INSTALL THAT DECK. THANK YOU FOR HAVING THE TIME TO DO THIS JOB.
They did a wonderful job. I thought everything was good. The people he sent out were very professional. The clean-up was fine. The painting work they did to the walls and the quality of work was all great. And their responsive was good when we had a question about a small thing.

Charlie is very professional. His prices may be a bit high, but I am a firm believer you get what you pay for. The quality of this workers and subs was wonderful. He even has a division that made a custom vanity for the master bath that matched a cabinet we had in there for towels and linens. He has a good attention to detail. He was patient working with our condo association that had problems with the new windows he installed and made sure that both groups were happy in the end with the work he did. We love the work he did on the two rooms and would hire him again.
Over a period of about 16 months, C&J Construction Services performed extensive renovations on my 155 year-old house. They started in January 2012 with exterior renovations, which included new shingles and exterior trim, new windows and doors, new porch, entryway and roof (including replacement of underlay), as well as a new bulkhead, rebuilt chimney, and stonework around the exterior. All were done with my input on designand preference and the workl was carried out with exceptional attention to quality materials and workmanship - reflecting an exceptional level of skill and motivation to do a quality job.

|After a few months' break, we undertook the interiors and worked collaboratively on demo and renovation of nearly the entire interior, inclding the installation of a kitchen appliances and granite countertops, a new shower and new sinks and toilet fixtures in two bathrooms, including the structural underlay to accommodate a 100 year-old footed tub that come with the house.

|I couldn't be more pleased with the outcome of the project. I enjoyed getting to know Charlie Hunt and his personable and skilled team who allowed me to "help out" with demo, painting and design suggestions and more. I am planning on using C&J again for Phase 3 of the project.

Projects of this magnitude always bring a few bumps in the road. For various reasons, including both scope creep and a few hidden surprises, we ended up pretty well over our targeted timeframe and budget.
That said, I highly doubt we could have chosen a better partner than Charlie Hunt. He saw the potential in our home, listened to what we were trying to accomplish, and worked the needed magic to make it actually happen. The results are stunning!
As this project continued to escalate, Charlie made absolutely sure that we had all the information to make the right decisions. Sometimes we did things his way, and in a few cases we followed our instincts. At no time was there anything less than a productive and comfortable dialog. And our calls, emails and messages were ALWAYS answered promptly and efficiently.
It would be easy to go on about Charlie's expertise and professionalism. He's the real deal. Just as important, he surrounds himself with experts in all areas of design, construction and finishing --- including some with craftsman's skills that are not easily found nowadays.
In summary, we have nothing but the highest regard for Charlie, his wife, Jackie, and all of his staff. I'd recommend them highly for virtually any construction-related project, regardless of size or complexity.
Went real well, excellent company to work with. All of the people on my job were professional and good at what they do. Kept the house and job clean. Asked if he would adjust my two front doors and storm doors - did it at no charge. All work done at the price they quoted, no surprises.
The work was performed beautifully! The craftsmanship exhibited was beyond my wildest dreams and the professionalism was superb! Charlie's foreman and crew were kind, excited about creating the best product no matter what that entailed, respectful of the home, and they knew their business so well that it was easy to live around them as they did the work. They had wonderful suggestions as they went through the jobs and were happy to accept our ideas and give their suggestions to significantly improve ours. Our house was completed with more cohesion of design then we could have done without their suggestions. All the while they kept in mind that we had a budget and had to stick close to it.
I've had many jobs done at other homes in other places, but I've never felt so sure that our home was in the hands of artisans who cared as much about the product as we did. These folks KNOW their business and they love it! They are easy to work with because Charlie has gathered professionals like himself, who care about the product and genuinely like to partner with the folks who seek their help.
For his part, Charlie understands how to work with his crew and how to set the standard; he maintains that standard with his watchfulness and trust of his foreman who is of a like mind and totally talented in his own right.
I believe that we were fortunate to have found this company. With the general work ethic dwindling and the greed of those who care more about the money than the job that they do, this company, is a TOTAL BREATH OF FRESH AIR!
I recommend them whole heartedly and know that anyone who calls them will get a fair price, a better job than they could have hoped and a wonderful experience with a great bunch of guys who genuinely understand and love their work and are there to help guide you through it all.
I'll be back to update once the next phase, the bathroom renovation and some structural work is completed.
