He did an okay job with us. We had to remind him constantly. He was late. He didn't turn out to be a good fit for us. It wasn't major with us. We are smart enough to make sure we didn't give all the money upfront and got the work done. But, it became a little frustrating.

It has been a total haphazard job. The work was supposed to be completed on 12/18/15, but it has still not been completed. They left 4 or 5 cabinet doors undone, two of which were not measured properly, and they did not paint the shelves. They never came back and painted the beam that was installed, so we had to pay someone else come in and finish that. They had different people coming and were always rushing when at the job site. They never finished anything properly. The only part of the job that was really done well was the hardwood floors which were done by a subcontractor. We were left with a dysfunctional kitchen, the stove was left in the middle of the room and they scratched the hardwood floor when they moved the refrigerator. He was also supposed to build an island for us which we still have never seen.

Communications with Joseph Clark have been very difficult and when I am able to get in touch with him, he continues to come up with excuses. As of last week, Joseph said that he is now in Utah and he will need to outsource my job out to another person to finish the work. He continues to set dates to follow up on the work and then he never gets back to me. At this point, I am going to need to hire someone else to complete the job. He has treated us poorly and strung us along throughout the last 4-5 months, always saying someone would call but then weeks would go by and he rarely followed through.

There were three different areas of service that they claimed they didn't see when preparing the initial estimate, costing me an extra $1,950.

The only parts of this job that were done correctly were the exterior painting and the flooring. Everything else was done incorrectly.

They were supposed to prep the walls for painting and paint them, but there are still lots of cracks on the walls that they can't just paint over.

The doors were supposed to be fixed and painted, and he hasn't touched them.

He was supposed to re-do the bathroom and half bathroom, and he just did the demolition on them and plywood on the bathroom floor.

He was supposed to replace two doors, one of them with wood, sheetrock and a new window, the other one with wood and sheetrock. He replaced both doors with wood and sheetrock, but he did not install the new window and left the exterior area of both doors just covered with plywood.

The right side porch was in serious need of repair, and that did not get totally fixed, either. He did the demolition, fixed under the floor, replaced the existing floor with plywood, and some sheetrock, but that's basically it.

I paid the total amount of money according to our agreement and almost everything is not completed. I've tried repeatedly to get him to come back. He texted me several times different schedules with item to fix or completed but very few of those items were completed. Finally, I've not seen ANY permits from him for any of this work. The companies that did the electrical and window services both presented permits right away.

"[Removed Member Name] I don't even know what to say to this. You hired your own plumber and your own subs and try to play general contractor on this project we addressed and completed everything we were supposed to do.... your plumber that you hired didn't show up for 3 weeks and then you asked me to get my plumber to rescue you and in fact you did use him again you use my window guy to rescue you we did work in there and through subs you hired had damage the floor we just laid down for tile andwalls the day we installed kitchen, you refused to knock down a porch that was in need of dire emergency rebuild at minimum you ask us just to do the floor I explained to you I have to do the exterior wall and you chose not to, your electrician put numerous holes in the wall which we were not contracted for if you had utilized our subs you would not be in your situation I informed you we would complete the remaining paint ,counter and tile and you let us I have the pictures there's no reason to make stories, unfortunately the first time being a teacher to flipping a house is proving to be tougher than you anticipated.....I flip homes ofter, you have additional locations I offers you to come too and discuss your options you have never shown to talk. [Member Name Removed]. cutting corners I do not do .....I won't for you or anyone, our name is on this in the end and all the guys it take to keep us here. You will have to find someone who will perform to what you need."

It was okay. It took them awhile to get the work done but it was acceptable. I got the work done maybe a month and a half after the purchase date. Yes there were additional costs. They were fine. I would tell others I'm afraid I wouldn't recommend them.

"Thank you [Member Name Removed], We appreciate the opportunity to work with you on your home we do apologize for not being able to meet your time frame, thank you for recognizing our quality in our interests to your main concern of repairing the damage and preventing further damage I just wish the weather was more cooperative during your project. Unfortunately with the deal you purchase materials traditionally do increase the cost but feel the upgrade of materials used will produce a more effective long term solution very glad you chose to upgrade. Again thank you for the opportunity to work on your home, Joe"

Joe gave me an estimate we decided on what was far and he began the job, they found that some of the existing wall were week and were not supported by studs, so we worked out a price to get these wall an ceiling fixed they had a lot of that. once done we worked out a price to get closet doors hung and base trim along with framing windows, they did an excellent job.
Our 16' x 16' family room had wall to wall carpet that we replace with cork flooring. Joe assisted in recommending a supplier in our area for the cork floor, with whom we were pleased. He also recommended adding trim around the fireplace, and insulation underneath this room which has a crawlspace. He discussed with us the downsides of cork flooring (fades, yellows, can't handle a lot of water). While we already knew this, I was encouraged by him discussing this with us before we purchased the flooring supplies.Everyday Joe and his guy helping him cleaned up after themselves. When there was a machine to be left for the next day, he asked me before hand. It took a good amount of cleanup each day which i really appreciated as my children would have found scraps to play with. All the details and edging is great. My husband and I were extremely happy with the results. Details that I didn't think of and he pointed out, I realize now would would have bothered me if hadn't handled as he did.I did not necessarily know what day\time Joe would be at my house each day. He was working another job at the same time, which he had discussed with me. In the end, he got the job done by my deadline.2.5 years later, with a family and dog on the floor our family room every day, the work is holding up perfectly. It looks wonderful, there are no gaps, it is all smooth\flat, and I'm extremely pleased with the quality of the work that was done.

This is the second time my wife and I have used Clark Concepts. This time we had our basement bathroom designed and completed by Joseph and his crew. I travel in my job and was unable to be at home during construction but with Joseph's communication and work performance we were able to come home to a beautifully crafted bathroom and to top it off all before the holidays!!! GREAT job guys.

"The Horror...The Horror..." After comparing my experience with the other reviews of this contractor on Angie's List, I can only surmise that the other reviews were written by friends, family, or employees. 7 weeks after the target date, I had the frame and horribly shingled roof of a front porch, a new back door (with no storm door or trim), the siding mostly done (though the j-channels were not trimmed to fit, and the seam spacing is horrible), unwrapped windows and doors, 2 or three destroyed ornamental plants, my gutters lying in a pile in the yard, another pile of debris in another part of the yard, outdoor sconces still disconnected, the same picture window, and his demand that I no longer contact him as I refused to make another payment before he finished the job, even though I'd already paid him more than our contract called for at that stage of "progress." I made 2 of the 3 payments, plus an extra payment of $2500 after Mr. Clark begged me in order to meet payroll. The only work done before the contracted completion date was that the old porch, and my plants, were destroyed by the crew of what appeared to be children that he called "professionals" that used such force that objects on shelves inside the house were knocked to the floor as well. His excuse for not starting any other work was to blame the town for being late with the work permit. After I suggested that maybe I should find another contractor, he promised to begin work and, having learned that I work in human services, he then asked me for help in locating a facility to help a family member with a personal problem! By the end of the year, he had completed the porch frame and roof, and installed new wood on the outside of my windows: I had installed the windows myself and he said that they required the extra work, though he never quoted me a price, and it took maybe 3 days to complete. I was given multiple excuses for why the rest of the work hadn't been done and the multiple days that neither he nor any of his crew showed, including the permit mentioned above, "I'm waiting for my guys to finish a job in Litchfield," another client had bounced checks which resulted in the temporary freezing of his business accounts, etc. After again suggesting that he might not be up for the job, he said that he couldn't return the money I'd already paid him as he'd spent it on the siding. He promised to begin work again and finally started the siding on January 2, promising all work would be completed by the end of the week; that is when I paid him the extra $2500 he'd asked for, with the verbal agreement that he would lose $200 off of the contracted price for every day the job took beyond that point. He didn't meet his new deadline, and promised to finish after another week; he still didn't finish. I have an approximately 2200 sq ft home which other appraisers promised to side completely within 5 days. Ultimately I hired another contractor to complete (and partially re-do) the work; his one-word assessment of his predecessor was "moron." I've retained a lawyer and will likely be filing a complaint with the Department of Consumer Protection.
Response from Clark Concepts LLC
"On 10/08/2011 Clark Concepts LLC did secure a contract with the member to remove a concrete porch and stonework on exterior wall of front side of home, change a bay window and install Vinyl siding. Clark Concepts LLC priced out this job according to existing conditions of home only to show up and be met with poorly installed windows that were impossible to complete without additional work done that was not in contract. Clark Concepts LLC did provide demolition to said property to remove existing stone to prepare exterior wall for new vinyl. Clark Concepts LLC did try several times to make contact with the homeowner to let him know he may want to put any belongings on or near wall in a safe place or storage ….. There was no response. Clark Concepts LLC and many others were confronted with unforeseen circumstances in October of 2011 By Lauren Keiper BOSTON | Mon Oct 31, 2011 7:42pm EDT “Connecticut was particularly hard hit and Governor Dannel Malloy said 100 state roads were closed and about 200 more partially closed. He called the power outages in his state the worst in history. As residents escaped homes without heat and electricity, hotels in central Connecticut were sold out. Snow days, usually not tapped until at least after Thanksgiving, were declared by scores of public schools that remained shut throughout the Northeast on Monday. While children were delighted with the surprise long weekend, their parents were advised that because of downed wires, Halloween trick-or-treat routines should be adjusted so children were home by dark and an adult accompanied them. The outages include roughly 750,000 customers still without power on Monday in Connecticut; about 46,000 in Massachusetts; more than 390,000 in New Jersey; 350,000 in Pennsylvania; nearly 60,000 in New York; and about 14,000 in Maine.” Clark Concepts LLC did inform Mr. Wilson of possible delays and changes due to this disaster with no sympathy or understanding but….. Clark Concepts LLC was offered a chance to rectify the situation by the member……The member offered to remove 200.00 a day from payment everyday over the deadline date, Clark Concepts LLC felt obligated to satisfy the member as we try to accommodate all our customers. Clark Concepts LLC did return to the jobsite to complete project …only to find access to Material and Clark Concepts LLC’s property unattainable. Joseph Clark (owner of Clark Concepts LLC) did contact local authorities and remained at the member’s home for 1 ½ hours with law enforcement to obtain property with no response or willingness to return Clark Concepts LLC’s property. Clark Concepts LLC informed the member to cease communication with Clark Concepts LLC due to many reasons that were uncontrollable and the member's childlike behavior. Clark Concepts LLC feels any human being not willing to accept unmanageable weather circumstances, chooses to not return property/tools that are not the members and utilized to provide income for children and their families is not a person we should have provided services for."

This was the worst contractor experience I have ever had. Clearly in this case, a super service award means nothing. I contracted with Joe Clark (Clark Concepts) to do a total renovation on our home in November. The total cost was $88,310. We paid $22,077 upfront with additional payments scheduled to follow. Trusting him and giving him money upfront was the biggest mistake we made. The work began on November 8th and the contract stated a completion date of January 30th. We were told that the basement bathroom would be completed in 10 to 14 days as my daughter was moving in and we needed the extra shower. Except for the first two days problems were evident from the very start. Joe was very rarely on the job and his associates always showed up late, often hours late, would often cancel at the last minute, and would always leave early, very rarely putting in a full day's work. They were careless with our personal items, they constantly left tools where they were not supposed to be, and most work that they did had to be redone again and again to get it right. We spoke to Joe two weeks into the project when very little progress had been made and he apologized and said he would be sure that things got back on track and we would see an immediate improvement. He said that he felt that his lack of presence on the job was causing much of the turmoil. Two weeks later we had the same conversation and nothing had changed. When December arrived and still very little progress had been made on the bathroom and a third conversation with Joe also resulted in no improvement, we told him that we did not want to proceed with the renovations. Joe stated that he wanted to complete the bathroom and settle up to regain our trust and renew our faith in his business. We agreed reluctantly to sign a new contract to replace the previous one and allow him to complete only the bathroom. He promised a solid completion date of December 23rd and a refund of $9,105 of the money that we had paid him upfront to do the additional renovations. The second contract did not honor the 5% Angies List discount that he advertises. On December 23rd the bathroom was still not completed, we did not have our refund, and he did not return to the job again until January 21st after repeated attempts on our end to contact him. On February 2nd (three months into the project) the bathroom was still not done and we told him not to return. To this date we have not received one dime of the $9,105 that he owes us, the quality of much of the work is handyman level at best, and we had a subcontractor threaten to put a lien on our house because Joe had not paid him. If this is the definition of super service I will certainly look elsewhere from nnow on.
Response from Clark Concepts LLC
"Clark Concepts LLC tried to work with Mr. and Mrs. (Member) regarding several issues, of design and décor with additional worries of lack of presence on the job by owner Joseph Clark and deadline. Clark Concepts LLC does not ever choose décor for any project, that is left to homeowners choice. In this case, a bathroom shower tile was chosen by homeowner and installed by Clark Concepts LLC then removed by Clark Concepts LLC at homeowners request with no fault of Clark Concepts LLC skill , a new tile was swapped out and installed with no form of labor paid. Clark Concepts LLC installed an Armstrong Vinyl floor and was asked by homeowner to remove and reinstall before the said flooring was completed with no form of labor paid. Clark Concepts LLC offered homeowner to discuss Vinyl floor application procedure and warentee with Armstrong company direct as Joseph Clark did and Mrs. (Member)refused . Clark Concepts LLC employs several independent contractors fulltime so the owner Joseph Clark can maintain a daily business routine and job production. Clark Concepts LLC is not responsible for unforeseen circumstances due to weather nor can a deadline remain the same when change of work procedure has been requested by homeowner. Deadlines cannot be met with an abundant amount of changes. With the amount of unusual weather our state endured in 2011 Clark Concepts LLC / Joseph Clark feel changes of décor, changes of procedure ,changes in order of work and unmanageable environment caused uncontrollable delays that Clark Concepts LLC tried to rectify only to be met with confutation and unreasonable offers."
