Wonderful. Another contractor had botched some of my work and left abruptly. James Ferguson of Class Act Carpentry stepped in and installed my siding, with a vapor barrier, new windows and trim with exceptional workmanship. Everything was level and straight and well placed. He communicated well with me. He worked quickly and efficiently and was on time every day. He kept my home clean of his materials. He did the interior trim(casement around the windows, trim around the windows and floor trim after flooring had been laid. All was caulked very nice and clean. Everything was straight and level. He explained what he was doing. The blinds measurement guy said how wonderful the casement of the windows job was in that every window was absolutely square and level and there were 10 windows. The building of the deck stairs is ongoing at the moment but I am sure I will equally pleased with that work.

Excellent. They are absolute professionals. The bedroom is beautiful. I added installation of a hardwood laminate floor in our dining room. The floor was not level. They leveled the floor and installed the laminate to perfection. I would hire them again in a heartbeat!

Jim and Tom did great work for us, replacing our decking and making it safe and adding handrails (our house didn't have those installed when we purchased it). They checked in with us on decisions they needed to make, but were always happy to talk through our options and make recommendations when we needed them. They were willing to do a lot of smaller handyman type jobs related to the deck (hauling away all the old decking, replacing a vent screen that was blocked by the old deck and had a hole in it, painting the side of the house where the old deck was at a different height) which made the whole experience a great one. They handled all of the materials purchasing for us without an additional fee (other than cost plus billed time). We absolutely plan on having them return and do more work for us as we redo other parts of the house.

Had a few items for a finish carpenter to complete at the end of a project and Jim agreed to come out and work on the project. He informed me there would be 2 finish carpenters coming. Provided them a list in priority order - several items that had to be done and several items they could do if they had more time (hoping with 2 guys they could get to some of the items on this list). Since they would be arriving an hour or two before me, I had asked them to wait on items if they had questions.

They arrived at 8 and I arrived at 10am. They had reviewed the list of items to be done, they were working on one of the items for a "if you have more time list." We worked through any questions that they had and they continued working through the end of the day - 6.5 more hours or 8.5 hours with two guys (17 hours total).

When I received a list of the items they did complete and the items that they didn't, I was pretty surprised. First of all, they did not complete 5 of the 6 items on the list of items that had to be completed. They did do one or two other items of the other list, but was surprised that with 17 hours of time what little had been done. Being in a corner, I chalked it up to questions about the remaining items to be done and planning for completing the remaining items. We both (I thought) planned for them to return the next week to complete the remaining items. Jim had even stated in his email to me with the costs for the day, the things they needed to "come back and finish".

When I returned from my weekend out of town, they informed me that they had taken another job that would last 2 weeks, which although not ideal, was OK with my schedule. When I contacted them about a week and a half later they had taken more jobs and couldn't get to me for at least a month. I had company coming in a few weeks, but they wouldn't schedule even one day to guarantee me a date.

Maybe I was naïve that when they started a project they would come back to finish at least the three highest priority items on my list that they didn't do. I sit here now several weeks later after paying them for 17 hours for which they completed very little and having to find someone else to do the job that they didn't finish. I'm not very pleased at all.

Response from Class Act Carpentry
"Thank you for the review, but we need to get the facts straight on this situation. You paid us for 8.5 hours at $85 With materials and tax the total was $739.13. Not the $2000 that you state you paid. You opened our conversation with I'm not hard to get along with(I should have just left then) that's the first sign of the opposite. Especially telling me that last guy was a whiner when he told you the fridge panels were to big. Which they are. This is why the first three things on the list were not completed. The fridge had to be fixed first. Sorry that you feel that you had to exaggerate the cost to try and make us look worse. But the fact is it was only a third of what you stated. Good luck on your project"

Jim and his team did excellent work hanging cabinets floor to ceiling for our built in bookshelf. The job was complicated since the room in our 90 year old house is really skewed. They did a beautiful job leveling all the shelving and creating the perfect fir for the space. We are scheduling time to hang 3 more walls. good work, good communication, good guys.

Jim and his team member were excellent. He brought one other guy with him and I wish I could remember his name. All the work done was high quality and a beautiful improvement to our home. There were a lot of weird little quirks in our old house and Jim was great about checking with me before starting each project when something looked it might not be what I had hoped. Jim also had good advice about workarounds. It was a bonus that they could come on the weekend so we didn't have to take time off work. And they were great with our skittish dogs. We are really happy with the results and we plan to hire Jim to come back in a few months to do crown molding and finishing work on some built-ins we are installing.
Key recommendations Jim helped me with:
If you want to have a lot of different work done, organize a list
Buy materials ahead of time so you can get the most out of the time his team is working.

Jim is professional, punctual, has great communication and does good work. He accommodated a last minute need to remove baseboards that were installed badly by another contractor, and he cut/installed new baseboards as well as cut/routed a few window casings. His work was meticulous and clean.
I would definitely call on Jim again for additional work.
I called Jim to schedule a bid several times but things came up. (He was willing to come out on a weekend though- just didn't work out). When I called the last time, he said he had 2 days to work and could just come and start. My mistake because I wasn't 100% ready and had to leave for work after only a brief discussion.
The work they did was very good, they went a day over the original estimate of time but that could have been due to wanting to make certain I liked a detail they were constructing before moving ahead. (I didn't).
They came 2 days later with the new material and dismantled what they had done and worked a long day to finish. I am a designer by profession and picky by nature, so I commend them on sticking with it and finishing the job. It looks great and I only wish that I had planned for them beforehand. The other issue was that they require payment at the end of each week, which I hadn't been aware of and it caught me off guard. I am used to getting an invoice at the end of a small project like that, and they did oblige me with a written invoice.
They were great! They were very accommodating of my schedule and managed to tackle everything on my long list of "to dos." I had a previous contractor install some window and door trim very badly and they took one look and said that they could fix it. I was amazed at the results and wish I had known of Class Act Carpentry a few months ago. I cant wait until their schedule lightens up a bit so that I can hire them for some more work!
Jim and Tom were fast, friendly and skilled. They offered a lot of free advice to prevent future issues. Not all carpenters will take on the smallish but nasty job of replacing rot. But they went right for it and got it done, faster than I imagined. And they cleaned everything up so you couldn't even tell they had been here...except my house looks much better now. They made the repairs better than the original installation. We will be having them back for any of our future carpentry needs.
I enjoy working with Jim and Tom, who spent about 1.5 weeks installing millwork throughout the house for me. They are easy to talk to, resourceful, and innovative in providing solutions to problems. They are professional, work diligently and are meticulous in what they do. They are patient with my whimsical requests. Their workmanship are of highest quality and even my painters complimented that their carpentry work is one of the best they have seen in a long time. That is saying a lot. I highly recommend them to other Angies List members and I certainly hope to work with them again in the future.

Before we began Jim made it very clear that they don't bid a job out for a specific figure, but instead work by the hour. I was a little nervous about that, but from the very get-go I was impressed by Jim and Tom's great work ethic and industriousness. Those guys are fast, and GOOD! They were polite, conscientious, and meticulous. No detail was overlooked. They also helped with the purchasing of materials -- something I was unsure about. Every morning they would swing by whatever store I needed them to, picking up supplies including decking, cabling, railings, etc. They simply purchased the materials (with receipt) and I reimbursed them directly, or they had a clerk call me so I could pay over the phone. They made everything so easy. A representative from American Metal Specialties (where we purchased the cable railings, etc.) came out to the property and was so impressed with the deck installation that AMS added Jim and Tom to their list of recommended contractors which they provide to their customers. The representative even took photos and promised to post them on their website as an advertisement for their products. Job well done, Jim and Tom! I can't imagine hiring anyone else.

The one challenge with Class Act Carpentry is that the firm is busy. The brothers were committed to a project out of Seattle when I purchased the deal. So it took a few weeks until they could come to do the work.

And, I can see why they are in demand. They took care of quite a list of concerns during the contracted time including: assessing the issues; purchasing the materials; installing a kick guard on my back door and repairing damage to the door frame; replacing some rotting and missing lumber on my front fence; assessing my car port for structural decay; and planing the exterior basement door so it no longer sticks to the top step; as well as explaining and consulting with me on the projects. They took care of the issues with dispatch and friendly professionalism.

The prepay amount was $280 for four hours of carpentry work. The final amount was $308.88 to cover the tax for the service as well as materials. It was money well spent.

Several contractors came to give me an estimate on repairing the doors and trim and said
they didn't want the job because it was just too much work.
Class Act showed up on white horses and rescued me! I immediately felt
at ease with this company and I was right to feel that way. They showed
up and worked like mad men and did an amazing job! I was so pleased with
how things turned out that I hired them for a job at my Mom's house and
they will be my ONLY choice for anything in the future.
Jim and Tom are brothers and they work really well together. They showed up on time and there was absolutely no time wasted. I have two cats and they were very careful about shutting doors etc. They were quiet and cleaned up after themselves.
I really cannot express how pleased I was with this company! I was very gun shy because of my last experience but these guys were just fantastic. If you have something you need done or want done..Class Act Carpentry is who you need to hire!!
I liked these guys right off the bat - Jim called me back had great communication, showed up everyday worked hard the whole day - they both are so great I just can't say enough. Well worth their price!
I have 6 animals and they were very aware of them and their needs as well.
They did great work Example; the stairs would have just been covered over with the flooring material by any other installer but Jim seen a problem with the treads (cupped) and instead showed me what was needed to make this better and then went and handled it making these stairs really solid. He did this throughout the project with many issues and he did it with great communication.
They are very conscientious of the quality of their work and it shows.
I had a vision and they created it.
They allowed Julie and I to do what we could like paint ect even though the really high places they took care of.
They are very knowledgable about what they do and if they are unsure they find out the proper way. We didn't have to hire a bunch of different kinds of contractors its like having it all in just the two of them and they get along so great and are such great fun we feel like they are a part of our family I actually miss them and can't wait for them to help us do the next project - the bathrooms!!!
