Quite unimpressed overall - from the time they knocked on the door until job completion was 7 minutes. Left a ton of dryer lint and plastic (from the vent) all over the landscaping with zero intent to clean it up. I'm a believer that you should always leave places better than how you found it when working in/around someone's house. The only reason it's 2 stars instead of 1 is because the price was better than others, but I'm assuming the other companies would have probably done a better job as well.

This is an honest company that I'd business with again. Purchased a coupon for $79 that was much more affordable than most chimney contractors. When they came out they let me know that our pre-fabricated chimney was actually cheaper to inspect/sweep and processed a partial refund. AWESOME!
The original Angie's List deal of sweeping out the chimney went fine. After the job, I was told that during the inspection the technician noticed that some bricks were loose around the top edge of the chimney. He also said that the chimney should have one of those aluminum hat things to stop rain from falling directly in while still letting smoke come out. The house had been standing for 100 years without such things with no problem, but he was very convincing so I allowed him to come back in a few days time for the additional work.
The same technician returned with another guy a few days later to do the work. I sat down in my dining room while the workers were up on my third floor getting roof access, which happens through a skylight/hatch on the third floor. Suddenly, I heard a terrible crash. I ran up to the third floor and found that the ladder they were using had fallen, along with the worker. I was so worried that he was hurt that I didn't pay much attention to the actual scene of the accident. The technician sheepishly told me that he was fine, just startled because of the fall. He also said that he had fallen because he was trying to reposition the ladder while hopping on it rather than climbing down to move it. He took full responsibility.
At that point, I noticed that the falling ladder had hit the drywall, leaving a hole right through it and causing some other damage. I also noticed that a piece of art I had hanging had fallen, but in the confusion I didn't pay much attention to it.
The workers finished the job, took $100 off the bill to cover the drywall repair, and left.
After they left, I noticed that the piece of art that had fallen was actually significantly damaged and completely ruined. I called the office and presented my case, suggesting that they reimburse me the $150 the art had cost me the previous year. I showed them the artist's website with similar pieces. They agreed and said the check would be mailed in a couple of weeks.
A couple of weeks came and went and I got back in touch. They said the check was still on the way and to look for it in a couple more weeks because it still needed to be processed. Once again, it never came. My further attempts to get in touch with the company went unanswered. The check has not come as of this writing, ten weeks after the accident.
I had been waiting for the check to arrive and the incident to be settled before I reviewed this company on Angie's List. If they had compensated me for their negligence, I wouldn't have mentioned the situation at all, as it didn't have anything to do with the actual repair work. I didn't have a problem with that . . . the quality seemed neither exceptional nor terrible, and I would have given them a B all the way down the line.
But I am upset at the way my legitimate request for compensation has been handled. I gave them plenty of time and opportunity to make things right, and I have been ignored. In my last communication, I even mentioned that I was going to include the situation in this review and still didn't hear back. I feel like this is an illustration of the company's character and ethics--from the technician's original recklessness to the lack of responsibility taken for it.
I do not recommend this company and feel they should be avoided by anyone looking for a good business relationship.

UPDATE, AUGUST 2015 -- This situation has never been resolved. I have never been reimbursed by this company. I see that the technician has responded about borrowing the ladder, as if the ladder was the culprit. I'm not sure why a chimney contractor does not have more experience with different kinds of ladders or even travel with his own trusty ladder. But the fact is, at the time he said he had been trying to move the ladder without getting off of it.
Response from Colonial Chimney and HVAC
"I borrowed the home owners ladder because he had roof access from inside the home. I did not no how to operate the ladder (it was a Little Giant ladder) never used one before! I miss judged the ladder when I tried to extend it."

There was only one hang up. When I contacted them through e-mail I indicated that I wanted to talk about installing an antique wood burning stove in addition to the chimney inspection and cleaning. The appointment was made for the afternoon on a certain day. But, the guys called that morning and left a message on my voicemail saying they could come early. I did not get the voicemail and they showed up early anyway. I was not home but my mother was there. Unfortunately, these guys did not get the word from the scheduler in the office that I wanted to talk about the installation of the wood burning stove in addition to having the chimney cleaned. So they came did they work and left. I called the workers back (since I had their phone number from the voicemail) and communicated my annoyance at the schedule change. The guy was very apologetic and offered to come back though he was no longer available at the scheduled time which I had blocked off on my calendar.
However, we ended up talking about the project over the phone and he was able to give me all the information I needed about the potential installation over the phone. He was very knowledgable and helpful. So, I'd like to give them a "B" for punctuality though that doesn't seem to really fit the situation. So they get all As despite this little hitch.

The guys that showed up were great, very friendly, and ready to answer any questions I had. They did their work quickly and cleaned up afterwards. They also got me an extra discount on the repairs.

There were no high pressure sales pitch or scare tactics used. There was no bait and switch or 'limited time offers' to push the sale along.

The front office person I dealt with could have made more of an effort. The day of my repairs, I was called and told the Credit Card Machine was not working, so I would have to pay by check, or my appointment would have to be changed to another day. I was then called back after several minutes and told that a post-dated check would be acceptable if funds were not currently available. I understand that the Credit Card System was being changed over, but there should have been some thought put into this before calling anyone.

The B for responsiveness is for the front office, not the workers.

When they inspected my chimney they discovered that my chimney was was never rebuilt correctly, they took pictures that showed mortar was only partially applied and there were cracks . They filled in and sealed what was needed. They also advised me to have my chimney cleaned after burning a cord of word. They offered a warranty on their work and will keep a record of what was done with the pictures. I was pleased especially after I have had more the a few companies clean my chimney and even had one iinstall an insert and no one ever mentioned the condition of my chimney.
It went very well. They came on time. They did their work well. They told me how often I should get it cleaned and if I'm just using the fireplace twice a year, not to worry, that I didn't have to get it cleaned until every 3 or 4 years.

Told me what was causing the poor draft. Recommended two options and gave me quotes. The chimney wasn't very dirty, so they offered to credit the cost of the sweep to the cost of the two fixes.
