Extremely Disappointing Experience – Feel Like we Were Swindled. Even though Colonial’s estimate came in about 10 – 15% higher than other roofing companies, we chose to work with them based on the professionalism and thoroughness of the sales director, Chris. We believed that the quality and service would be at a higher level. He took the time to talk us through the options and show us certificates for all of the installers. Unfortunately, that is where the good experience and professionalism ended. One morning as I was leaving for work, the project manager (Chic) show up unannounced to tell us that they were delivering materials. We were surprised because no one had communicated with us and we had not had a chance to make arrangements to move our vehicles or boat and trailer. After several calls back and forth and hours on the phone, it turns out, they had called someone to notify them, it was another customer. Ok, we understand, mix-ups occur. So, we made arrangements for the materials to be delivered a few days later. The first day was a disappointment. We had agreed that they would use shorter nails on a section of our roof where our ceiling was directly below the wood. Unfortunately, they used long nails and we had several holes in our ceiling, where we could look from our living room, directly at the sky. When we went to the roof to take a look, there were holes through the roof and two layers of tar paper. When asked to properly lay the tar paper, the project manager escalated into a shouting match with my husband. So, in addition to the higher cost for the roof, we also incurred the expense and inconvenience of having to patch and repaint our ceiling. To their credit, the owner (Jim) did offer to have the crew come inside to repair the damage, but (as pointed out below) by that time we had learned that at least one of their crew was a convicted criminal, out on probation, we opted to not have them come into our home around our young son. However, then they used the long nails AGAIN and shot holes through another section of our roof, splintering the wood in the ceiling. This was stained wood and not as easily patched and repaired. It is still splintered. Even though we removed all of our cars and emptied the front yard and driveway, as they arrived and left, they tore up our neighbor’s lawn (deep muddy ruts) and crushed our bromelaids. When this was addressed with the project manager, his response was “it will grow back.” During this process, we spoke with the workers. They were nice enough, but one of them was a convicted criminal, out on probation, and “this was the only job he could get.” Another one only did roofing “sometimes”, he was generally a handyman and landscaper. Not exactly the trained and certified roofers that we were promised. During the sales meeting, we were told our roof would take “two days tops”. We have a 1,100 square foot house with a simple A-line roof. No gables, no connections, nothing complicated. However, our roof took over a week to complete. On several sunny days, our roof was empty, with no work being completed. After the roof passed inspection for the tar paper, we were informed that they had to order the shingles. What!? Why weren’t the shingles ordered? Then we were told they only received half a shipment. After reaching out to the sales rep, the only individual who was responsive and had a clue about customer service, we were told that he “was no longer with the company.” So, after paying more money, spending more time, extending arrangements for cars and boat to be stored elsewhere, having untrained individuals work on our roof and bust up our ceiling, our roof is done. I pray that the warranty is honored by the shingle manufacturer. Should there be any issue there, I can see only legal action as remediation. I cannot in good conscience recommend this company.
