I will begin with a quote from the BBB as of April 4, 2016, "The BBB has obtained information from Greenville County Court System indicating the company has been subject to civil court judgments concerning similar disputes. According to Greenville County Court the company's owner, Jeff Nordeen, has also been parties to charges of grand larceny and burglary, and check writing fraud in the commission of doing business."

Now, from looking at the many positive reviews, it is obvious that Jeff has the ability to do a good job when he chooses. But you need to ask yourself, what if I end up being one of the jobs that he decides isn't worth doing well. This is a critical question, because when he does a poor job, it can be to the level of a disaster. After reading the review from 2013 by the guy who had Jeff do his pool deck I see that I rather escaped.

The most concerning issue is the blatant dishonesty, as I was told many things and given many reassurances that he did not follow thru on, and in fact, later denied having made the statements.

Here are the things that are wrong with my driveway:

1. Poor finishing resulted in significant areas of poor drainage on the west edge of the driveway (where my basketball goal is).

2. Poor finishing resulted in dozens of puddles. (Please see photos/video)

3. Most of the areas have surface crazing, which some concrete installers have told me will cause early degradation (there does seem to be some disagreement within the profession).

4. Many of the borders are rough and poorly shaped, resulting in a poor appearance.

5. The color of the concrete varies greatly from area to area. It looks like a calico plane of various greys.

6. The roughness of the surface also varies and is VERY rough is several areas.

7. He failed to remove all of the old asphalt. I had told him that he could leave it until the last section of concrete had been poured, but before that job was done, it became obvious that all of Jeff's promises of how he would make everything right were empty. Thus, I did not have him pour my patio (which looks spectacular next to Jeff's inferior work), and he refused to remove

the asphalt.

Jeff will no doubt respond with how I did not pay him in full. This is true, however, the small amount will not come close to what I must pay to fix his ugly, water retaining work. Also, the money was withheld in conjunction with a written and signed note stating that several of the above issues needed to be resolved prior to final payment. They were not resolved.

Response to Provider's Response: Mr. Nordeens' response begins with yet another deceit. because of Mr. Nordeen's ability to make me believe he was serious about customer satisfaction, I allowed him months of time for what he kept promising to come to fruition. The second pour happened long before I was able to realize the level of deceit I was dealing with from Mr. Nordeen. Regarding the offer to resolve the color issue, it is true that his wife actually told me that if the color issue did not resolve itself, that they would actually come and install a colored overlayment over the entire area. I was told they had another customer who had the same problem that I had, which they were going to do that same procedure to first. However, later I was told that this issue was not a warrantable problem. I urge all members considering contracting compass concrete to read Mr. Nordeen's excuse-making responses to other members, and note the pattern of his tone.
Response from Compass Concrete
"If Your comments were true you would not have had me pour a second time for you. You also planned on my coming and pouring a third time for you until you realized that I would not pour until the first debt was paid. Yes It is about what you owe me. I offered to come back and resolve the issue in color for you which the owner of American concrete explained to you that I was not responsible for however, I would require a check for what you owed me $950.00 Your response was don't bother to come. I did everything the way you asked unfortunately as every one knows there are people which just can not be satisfied. All my customers know There is nothing I wouldn't do to satisfy them. I gave you the contract because American concrete said it may take a while for the concrete to all cure the same color. Th contract also states you have a debt, 950.00 which must be paid. It bothers me to have any customer that is unsatisfied, even you."

I had originally hired another concrete contractor in Greenville County (Complete Concrete) to pour a driveway and sidewalk at my property located in Simpsonville SC. The workmanship from the original contractor was poor and directed storm-water towards my foundation. It was also poorly finished.
Jeff from Compass Concrete came to my rescue!!!!!!. After the original work was removed, Jeff properly graded the areas for the driveway and sidewalk so that all storm water was directed away from the foundation of the house and towards a wooded area on the back of the property. His completed work is a true testament of craftsmanship and experience. Jeff and his crew are professional and skilled individuals whom strives to satisfy the customer and develop customer relationships.
I will use him again for future projects.
Compass Concrete had installed a driveway for my home a few years ago. The driveway is beautiful and drains very well. When we were in the planning and budgeting stage for a decorative patio there was no doubt that we were going to use them again. We called them and set-up the appointment and they were on time and very friendly as before. They expressed to us that they were extremely busy and gave us a tentative date. We were slightly delayed because of the rain. Another date was set and the patio was poured. It is so beautiful and the colors are perfect. They also poured a small walkway around the pool and the house. It took two days from start to finish and no money was asked for up front. We are more than excited to show off our new patio to our family and friends. We have the nicest pool deck, patio, driveway and walkways in our neighborhood.
This guy seemed to be very friendly and sincere at first. Before hiring them, I asked if they were licensed and insured, he assured me that he was both.
Part of the job included grading of my front yard; he was to use any excess dirt to fill in an area beside my house that was having drainage issues. He commented that there would be too much dirt for the side of the house and included a charge to have the excess dirt hauled away, explaining that he had to pay a dump truck & driver to do so.
The dirt that was to have been moved to the side of my home was actually sold to my neighbor across the street (literally across the street). I was still charged for "hauling away" the dirt that he carried across the street on his front-loader, not hauled by a dump truck and driver.
The overall job was not satisfactory. There are still areas of the concrete installed that are broken and cracked; it appears that the forms were taken off too soon. When they used a sledge hammer to remove the forms, it damaged the concrete.
I was asked for CASH for services and even before the job was 100% completed. When I declined to pay 100% prior to completion, he got very angry with me, although I did pay him for the majority of the work at that time. When he came back to complete the job and was advised of the damaged concrete, he refused to fix the poor quality work and for several days after, continued calling and even sending his wife to my door to collect the balance due without repairing the damaged areas.
With all these "red flags" going on, I contacted the Better Business Bureau and discovered this business had an "F" rating AND this company had their business license revoked by the state of SC.
When I contacted the state, to confirm what I had found, they asked me to be a witness in a case against Compass Concrete. The state attorney advised me that they were fined for doing business without a license.
HORRIBLE experience with this company and the guy that represents them (although he declines being an owner of the company). Anyone claiming to be the owner of this company, could never be reached by myself or the state, to resolve this matter.
"We are sorry that future customers have to read this unfair account from someone we had to threaten with legal recourse. We received not one but two checks that bounced from this customer and finally had to insist upon cash for our payment which in turn was $300.00 short. We have emails that we would be glad to share which praise our quality and exclaim how happy this customer was until our lack of payment. We are glad to show any future customer our licensing and insurance and would be glad to take you to see this driveway before you make your choice. Out of general principle we will not respond to any further mis-representations from this customer. Please take a moment to compare this review with our many other reviews and awards on Angie's List. Thank you for your time and consideration."

Jeff came out to quote the driveway replacement. He was very knowledgeable about the industry and spoke to us at length about our situation. The demolition was pretty much completed the first day. The second day was placement of the template and leveling of the driveway. Concrete company was late on the delivery of the concrete (about 4 hours late), but that was not the fault of Compass. When truck arrived, it had mechanical issues and they had to call out service tech. When the tech got the truck working, the cement had been in the truck too long and Jeff refused the concrete. He called for two new trucks with fresh concrete. Finally got working cement trucks and driveway was poured. The crew from Compass Concrete stayed late into the evening until the job was done. I couldn't have asked for more dedicated guys to get the job done. Compass came back out the next day to wrap up the clean up after the driveway had dried a bit.
The company went above and beyond my expectations. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend them.
"Thank you [Member's name removed] . Our company loved working for you. You treated our boys like family and they were more than happy to work at your house for those three days. Sorry about the delay in concrete but after the truck had sat there for three hours because of mechanical problems, we knew that it was not good concrete and sent it back. That's the way it should have been because we wanted to give you the best job that we could. Enjoy your new driveway and Thank you"

Jeff came in and removed the sections that were to be replaced and installed forms. Concrete came late and they worked till way past dark to finish the job. They came back the next day and removed all the forms and pressure washed the whole driveway. Job came out very well and we are happy with all the work done.
Everything went really well with all three projects. We were somewhat nervous about the project turning out like we envisioned but Jeff's confidence put us at ease. They stamped and stained our porch floor to look like flagstone and it turned out beautiful. They also created a patio which extends around our pool. It was stamped and stained also. Jeff is like an artist in his ability to color the concrete so that it looks very natural like flagstone which is exactly what we wanted. He is very professional and knowledgable in what he does. He was very accessible and punctual and very easy to work with. We really could not be happier with the results!

After having a concrete patio done for me that was finished horribly, I called Compass Concrete. Jeff and Jenifer came over the same evening and talked with me about the problems. They gave me suggestions of what to do and how they could fix the mess I had. They did not pressure me into anything. Jenifer met me at a location to show me a couple of jobs Jeff had completed to see how the finished job would look. I called them back a day or so later, and asked them to do the work. They squeezed me in their schedule a few days later (they knew I was very anxious to get the work done because of all I had been through with the previous job) and came out and did the job. In 3 days I had my beautiful patio. They came out when they said they would and were on time. They never made me feel rushed while answering questions and telling me how everything was done, how long it would take, etc. and were very gracious answering all my questions. Jeff was very professional as were his helpers. They were all very friendly, worked quickly and with great quality. I would definitely have them again and recommend them to others (as I already have).

Went great! Jeff and Jennifer were awesome to work with and the job was done to our specifications.

Jeff and his guys went over and beyond and the work was finished in the timeframe they said. We had a lot of roots under our driveway and they took care of these as well.

Would definitely use their services again or recommend them to my friends, family, and neighbors.
We chose three companies from Angie's List with good ratings and/or coupons. Compass Concrete returned our call immediately and came out the following day to give an estimate. Of the other two comparisons, one did not bother returning our call (we left two messages) and the other was over priced, had to wait till next day to receive quote via email, and was not matching the same quality to be provided by Compass.
Compass' owner & wife came out to look at the job and quote a price. The price was given immediately after viewing the site. I also really appreciated that the wife came out as it makes me more comfortable being at home with my child while husband was at work.
We received a confirmation call the day before as to what time they would arrive. The following day the owner along with two additional workers came out "right on time" and began the job.
They were all very professional, friendly, no loud or bad talking as they worked (concern for a mother at home with child in ear shot). All the work was completed by end of day, as we had been told it would be.
Have to mention that when concrete arrived to be poured, the owner was not happy with the quality or look of the product and sent the truck back. It wasn't long before a different truck arrived with better quality concrete to be poured.
This made us very happy to see that the owner cares that much about the quality of his work and for the client receiving the product. We were assured with that measure of concern that he took of his professionalism and so happy with our choice to go with Compass Concrete.
Overall, we're extremely happy with the whole package and will definitely recommend Compass Concrete to friends/family as well as use them again for any future work we need done.
The providers showed up on time and were very nice to me. I'm an older woman and have gotten the run-around by other concrete guys. After interviewing 5 different companies, I chose Compass concrete. I appreciate their patience and promptness. They walked me through the steps. They even took time to turn off their machine and walk over and answer questions while they were working. The price was very fair. They stopped by a week later to check in on me. These are sweet guys. They referred a really nice electrician to fix my microwave. He was on time and nice too.
Compass Concrete was called to pour a new concrete driveway and a beautiful decorative patio for me. We had no idea what we wanted and we talked to several concrete companies before we talked to Compass Concrete. They were on time for the appointment and were in fact early. We told them what we wanted as far as a driveway and that we were considering a decorative patio as well. The other contractors were slow on getting back to us with a price and design however, Compass gave us ideas that we never even thought of doing. They brought pictures and told us if we wanted to see their work and walk on a decorative patio they had poured that they would be glad to take us. We saw three of their previous customers and the decorative patios and each and everyone was very happy with their professionalism and work that they highly recommended them to us. Our driveway and patio turned out beautiful and everyone that sees it loves it. Their design and colors matched our landscaping and our home perfect. We highly recommend this company for any time of concrete work.

My wife and I contacted two other companies and both did not show up on time and got their quotes in much past the deadline we had set. Compass Concrete's owner came out and gave us some ideas we had not thought of. We decided to go with the color and design they suggested. This was the best decision we could have ever made on this project. We already had a great design on the outdoor space but with out Jeff's input and work it would not have turned out to be the area we are so proud of. His pricing was the best, which honestly at first made me wary but his work was incredible. We hosted a wedding in our outdoor area last month and everyone complimented the "tiled floor", they did not realize it was stamped. Since then I have recommended Compass to two other jobs and each friend has called to thank me putting them in touch with Compass.

I noticed that the additional concrete poured around the pool was not straight. In fact, it bowed in and out like an S shape around the pool deck and even bowed in toward and over the pool. Jeff Nordeen told me my pool wasn't straight, which was absurd. The pool was full of cement dust and his saliva as he spit in my pool while talking to me. When called out on the quality of the work he left with the job not completed. The job looks horrible and the pool is a total mess. I spoke with the manufacturer of the concrete forms and they said he used the wrong form. He used a styroform form meant for concrete pools, mine has a vinyl liner. They said that would still work if he reinforced the form every 6 inches. He reinforced it every 6 feet. That is why the form bowed. I will have to pay someone to cut the concrete back 12-18" and repour around the edges to get a straight line on the pool. He poured around the ladders and the diving board which is completely lazy and unprofessional.
He cut the water line and reinstalled the PVC. When I plumbed the pvc back to the water source the new line under the concrete leaked, so I have no water to the pool area. He broke two posts on my chain link fence, ran over the top rail of the fence as it was in his way. I can't let my dogs out in the yard because there is no longer a fence. Upon arrival to the job his truck body took out part of my gutter system. His contractors ran over and ruined three of my landscape lights. His contractors cleaned their equipment on my gravel driveway leaving concrete mess all over. If something was in the way he ran over it. He has no concern at all over my property. I checked and found out he is not licenced and was ordered to cease and desist by a licencing board in SC in 2005. He then changed his name from Professional Concrete to Compass Concrete. He has dozens of law suits against him.
