They were certainly the low price. I was the one that identified the product that I wanted to use and they were an authorized contractor for that product which is the reason I contacted them. They had the lowest bid. Their response time to start the job was three times what they said it would be and it was already a month or two. It took them six months longer to complete the job than was necessary. I had to be on them. They did incorrect work that they had tear out and redo. I was very displeased. The process of their work was terrible. The work finally got done but I had to be on them all the time. I would never recommend them to anybody.

Conyers Construction did a previous job for us which was replacing our deck and they did a fantastic job on it. We paid for all of that and had them construct a set of stairs and they were suppose to stain them later when the weather got better. We have not heard anything from them since I wrote them the last check. We have tried contacting them and leaving messages and emails and they have not gotten back with us. Previously they were good on communication so I do not know what happened. I would like them to just give me a call and explain what is going on, at least to make sure they are ok and nothing happened. As it sits right now, we have a staircase that needs staining and a contract that was not fulfilled. If they cannot do the staining that is fine, just give me the $220. staining cost back.

We have continually contacted this company since the last check was given (Dec. 28, 2011) and the last of the work was done on Dec. 28, 2011. This is a father/son operation and they presented the contract and advised it would take 7-12 days to complete, depending on the weather. The weather has been fine, except for a few rainy days. That was fine with us but now here it is almost a month later and we have not heard from them at all. We have been more than patient with this company and all they did was take our money. They were very nice and returned calls when the contract was first signed but since then, no response. We are sitting with a frame for a deck and 9 holes dug in the ground for the concrete. Our deck is being held up with temporary supports. Larry Conyer's voice mail is full and can't take any messages, Matt Conyers does not call back either. We would like a resolution to this project. We want the project completed by Feb. 15, 2012 or a complete list of the money spent on the supplies/workers and the remaining money returned. If the later happens, we want in writing a release from the contract, so we may proceed with the deck. All we are asking is to have our deck completed, we would like to use it someday. We were told it would be completed in 7-12 days but I guess we forgot to ask which 7-12 days! Our suggestion is don't get caught up in Larry's "good ole' boy" talk. We assume our next call is to a lawyer and more money of ours is gone!

This is the most frusterating situation that I have ever experienced. Period. This company robbed me of over 16,000 and did not perform the work. No different from robbery.

My wife and I spent very much time trying to decide which company to use and what material to go with on the deck and retaining walls for our new home. During the bidding process Matt and Larry Conyers were wonderful, answering every call and e-mail, always there if we had any questions. We decided that we were going to hire Larry and Matt Conyers after much deliberation because they were so anxious to have our business, they were a family owned business, from nearby Fenton, and they presented themselves as a Christian family that wanted to do the right thing.

Everything changed dramatically the moment that they had our money in their hands. They would show up only occasionally, work for a couple of hours, and then no show for a long time. I would have to call them constantly and they woould never call back. My back yard was dug up on October the 6th, at that time they piled all of the dirt up next to my house, IT IS STILL THERE AND IT IS VERY DANGEROUS! They promised me when I signed the contract that it would be completed by October 31 as long as weather was OK - which it was.

After the last time that they showed up (Over a month ago) I got a call from the supplier of the stone for the retaining walls. He asked me if I had heard from Matt or Larry Conyers, I told him that I had been trying very hard to locate them without any luck. He told me that the stone had never been paid for, that Matt gave him a bogus credit card, and that he would either have to come repossess the stone, put a lien on my home, or I had to pay for it right away. At that point Matt and Larry had my money that was supposed to fund all materials, and I had to pay for it again, and they would still not call me back.

For the past month I have tried to contact them, leaving messages telling them that if they would just communicate with me, we can work something out. I told them that if there was some type of circumstance, I would work with them to try to find a remedy. I offered to work with them if they would just communicate with me - that is all I have asked for. To this day they have not called me back.

When I realized that these guys were criminal, I met with the local inspector and he brought me the plans that Matt and Larry Conyers submitted for permits. The greatest learning for me came at this point because they submitted for the permit on October 26th and the plans did not include the Gazebo. The contract agreement that included the Gazebo between Conyers Construction and myself was signed in September. This convinced me that these "Christian" family guys had intended to defraud me the whole time. At this point lawyers and police are involved, I have been defrauded for a lot of money, and I have to hire new contracters to do the job, and of course pay for it again.

If anyone wants proof of any of this let me know, I've got it.

Very frustrating and stressful experience. Signed contract on 11/11/10 and paid 30% down. Conyers told us it would be after the first of the year before they could begin our job. We were ok with that and just wanted it done by spring 2011. On 12/20/10 Matt Conyers called and asked if it would be ok if they got started early. They came on 12/21 and tore down most of the deck piling it in the middle of the back yard and saving some lumber in another area of the yard to build the storage deck. They finished demolition on 12/22 and requested the second payment, which I gave them. Matt stated they would be back after the holidays to begin construction and we should expect the old deck material to be picked up in the next couple of weeks. After not seeing anyone again by about 1/15/11 I called Matt and Larry's cell numbers. After several more phone calls over the course of the next couple of weeks I finally contacted Larry and he said they had been delayed on another job. Since the deck debris in the backyard was such an eyesore and it appeared it would not be removed for some time, I place an ad on Craigslist for free lumber and gave it away. After not seeing any of the Conyers through the first couple of weeks of February, I again started calling to find out when construction would begin. After several more unreturned phone calls I made contact and was again informed another job had taken longer than expected and they should begin work on mine shortly. Around the beginning of March I contacted Larry Conyers and demanded they either begin work or refund the money I had paid less the cost of demolition so that I could find someone to rebuild my deck. He assured me they would begin work and that I should expect a delivery in the next few days. The material was delivered and construction finally began around 3/8/11. I asked Matt about the possibility of adjusting the plan to widen the pool deck. He readily agreed and stated that we would not have to pay anything additional since we had been so patient with them. He indicated that there should be enough excess material to accommodate this request.

Progress was slow and steady through the end of May. However, we received a "cease and desist" order from our HOA stating the proper approvals had not been granted. It was in our contract that Conyers would get the approvals so I immediately called Matt. He stated that he had spoken to one of the Trustees and could not understand what the problem was. He came over and got a copy of the order along with other necessary information. He then took everything to the HOA management company, followed the correct process, and was granted approval.

There were several periods that they worked for a few days and then we did not see them again for a couple of weeks. We were informed that Matt and Austin had medical issues that contributed to the delays. When we disagreed with the way something was done such as the location of the storage door latches, they readily changed them. There were foul-ups with the French doors opening on the wrong side and being he wrong size. Conyers said this was the fault of their supplier and the doors would have to be reordered. The French doors were finally installed around the end of June.

I provided a punchlist at the same time. In mid-July Conyers came back and finished about 75% of the punch list. I had some complaints about the way the flagstone turned out and asked that they redo certain parts of it. They stated they would and did return to remove the metal border running from the driveway down the side of the house to the pool deck. Larry Conyers stated they intended to use treated lumber that would be flush with the ground and walkway. However, they never returned.

In early August I received a letter from a lawyer representing a building supply company stating a lien would be placed on my property if Conyers did not pay their bill. When I contacted Conyers to ask what this was about, I was told it was the fault of the supply company for having changed prices and not issuing the proper credits for the French doors and other material. Although I was still dissatisfied with my flagstone, I informed Conyers that they were to stop all work on my project and I requested a final invoice. After several more weeks of phone calls between me, Conyers, and the building supply, I finally received a final invoice that was approximately $4300 more than originally agreed upon. When I questioned the amount, Conyers stated this was for all the additional work I had requested and they had verbally agreed to. I stated that I would agree to pay for the additional items that Matt had given a price on, but that he had agreed to several things without indicating there would be any additional charge. When asked why these were not put into a written contract modification as Larry Conyers had made a point of saying they would be at contract signing, I was informed that I was at fault for not requesting one. We eventually compromised and I paid approximately half of the additional charges. On 9/9/11 I provided a bank check to both Conyers and the building supply company as co-payees and received a lien release from both parties.

The key issues for me are these: communications, accountability, and responsiveness. I know there were quite a few medical issues going on and in a small company they have a much more pronounced affect. However, there is no excuse for not returning multiple phone calls for days and weeks. I was usually very surprised when they would answer the phone or return a phone call. There were many occasions when we were told something was supposed to happen and it didn't. It got to the point where we would say, "we'll believe it when we see it." We never got more than four days in a row of work and no one ever worked on a Saturday on our project. Lack of accountability was also a major factor. First it was the weather, then it was medical issues, then it was other jobs, then it was supplier problems, then it was the HOA...it was always something other than, " We didn't manage this properly and we'll make it right," or "We're sorry, but that's the best we can do."

From a construction standpoint, Conyers does good work. We are please with the quality of the carpentry, roofing, decking, etc. We were also pleased with the price and the way Matt worked with us to design it. We have gotten lots of compliments on the project and many people have said it looks like something you would see in a magazine. We are beginning to enjoy it and will certainly do so even more as we replace some of the frustration of the building process with more pleasant memories.

Construction started in October, 2010 and was "substantially" completed in March, 2011.
Told at time of contract signing apprroximately 2 weeks for completion.
Weather affected construction at times but timeline affected most due to multiple projects contractor was working on.
Small items were left for completion when "Final Payment" was requested. Promised to return to finish. No completion to this date.
Received notice from St Louis County that a "Final Inspection" had not been performed and the original building permit was now expired.
Waivers of Liens were to be provide per contract. No receipt to date
Waste from removal of old deck still to be removed.
Multiple calls have been made to the contractor with messages left. No response from the contractor to date.

The project was delayed a few months due to all the rain and unforeseen circumstances but we weren't in any terrible rush so it wasn't a big deal; plus they were very nice about it and kept us up to date. The deck was done in PT wood with bronze balusters all around and the diagonal pattern on the floor and the landing. Conyers took only four days to take down the old deck and put up the new one and it looks FANTASTIC! They did such great work and such a reasonable price! Two of the people that worked on the construction, Matt Conyers and Josh made sure we had our questions answered and did a great job explaining what they were doing. I cannot say enough how courteous these two guys were as well as Larry Conyers, the owner. When the project was finished, we had a few questions and the concerns were taken care of with no problem the very next day. I would recommend this company to a friend for sure and probably will have them do more work in the future. It is such a beautiful deck and turned out so much better that we could have imagined, especially since the diagonal floor pattern makes it look bigger!

The time it took to complete the job was fine. However, some defects were noted the day after completion. The final check was given on the day of completion. As these problems were communicated to the company, several messages were left. No one would return phone calls. I mentioned the repairs needed, however the company has refused to speak with me. I had to actually go the the company's mailing address to be heard. After the owner promised they were not avoiding me and would take care of the problems, 2 1/2 months later, the issues have yet to be addressed. I consider them to be in breach of contract, not standing by their construction warranty.

I have been an Angie's List member for several years. In March of 2007 Conyers Construction installed an absolutely beautiful deck and did an excellent job at a decent price. Indeed last time I checked Conyers had it in their photo gallery on their website. See my report dated 3/29/2007 on this provider. About a year or so after the deck was installed we found a crack in the railing and contacted the company. I believe my wife talked with Larry Conyers, Matt Conyer's father. We were in no rush but did expect it to be replaced. We heard nothing for some time, and again my wife contacted them about a year ago. Again nothing done. by now we also had one of the railing posts leaning at an unsightly angle. Several months ago I sent two emails as best I can recall and received not reply. I then called a couple times and finally Matt Conyers did come by on or around September 10 while my son, Kyle was house sitting. He told my son that the railing had a 10 year warranty and he indicated he would get the needed railing and be out the next week to do the repairs. Since then I have sent emails and called on at least two occasions. No response. I do not understand this as they did such good work. I believe they respect Angie's List as because of the reports filed they have obtained a good amount of business. I do not know what to do. I do not understand how a company with what I believe to be good people who do good work can be so awful at responding to a customer. Have they gone out of business?
Response from Conyers Construction Co LLC
"Thank you for the feedback, We know that time is a very valuable commodity and we look to improve at every oppourtunity. We apologize for not speaking with you in a timely manner. My surgeries caused Matthew to be in a constant overtime mode. We realize you offered a very positive Angie's list review in the past (March 2007). We regret not living up to the standard we set earlier. Please see our other reports for more feedback on our company."

For this work we obtained three estimates. Larry Conyers, the owner of the company, and his son Matt Conyers, came over and discussed the project with us. We were very impressed how willing they were to listen to our ideas and develop a design around them. Also, the price that they quoted was very reasonable. We liked how flexible they were as we made minor modifications to the design. They tore out the old deck, build the new deck and pergola over our hot tub, and created a paved patio around the deck and hot tub. We were extremely happy with the workmanship. In fact, we were so pleased with the work that we asked them to do further landscaping, including creating a path with pavers/gravel, tearing out the old lawn, and putting down turf, and placing outdoor lighting. They did an exceptional job at a reasonable price. We both were extremely impressed with their esthetic sense, and were very pleased with the final results. For a short period, between the first and second part of the project, we did lose contact with them, and were not able to get hold of them by phone or e-mail. However, we found out that they were short staffed at the time, and once this was clear, there were no further problems. We would recommend Conyers Construction for any deck on landscaping work.
Response from Conyers Construction Co LLC

We had an old, falling apart deck that badly needed replacement. Conyers Construction provided an excellent project bid and worked with us to reach a final design that we felt worked best, including adding extra support structure and a safety gate at no extra cost. Our desire was for a simple, well-constructed deck without any special features or expensive materials, and they provided exactly what we wanted. The construction began two weeks later than originally estimated, due to some delays they encountered on another job. This in itself was not a problem, but the fact that it was a week and a half past the job start date before we received any communication from them as to when the construction would start was a little disappointing. A quick phone call or email early on to let us know of the delay would have been appreciated. Once construction began, everything went quickly and smoothly. The entire deck was constructed in 5 days, and they were very good about answering questions along the way and letting us know exactly what they were doing. The entire process was conducted with a minimum of intrusion, and they left the job site clean and neat every day after finishing. We are very happy with the final result and they are at the top of our list for future work.

Matt Conyers arrived on 10/5/2010 as scheduled to inspect & provide a quote. My deck is 16-feet-square and 12 feet above the ground, and its support beam pair was rotting due to poor original construction 10 years ago by another independent contractor. Matt said he had done a dozen of these types of repairs recently, where the support beam was clad in decorative vinyl, trapping water and rotting the beam. Matt warned it might take six weeks to complete the work due to his backlog of projects, but his team would come out to temporarily support the deck within three business days after acceptance of his quote. Matt proposed adding new posts near the house to provide more support under the ledger board, which had cracked slightly due to the weight of the deck sinking forward onto the rotting support beam. I concurred, wanting to make the deck as safe as possible for a very long time. Matt said he'd email me a detailed quote that evening, and he did. I had requested bids from two other contractors, only one of which showed up. That company sent a sales rep who had to call a Production Manager to describe the site and get an estimate via cell phone. That company committed to start & complete the work within a week of acceptance. While that sales rep was professional, and their sales brochure was slick, Matt made me more comfortable because he had obviously done such repairs himself, and would actually do this work with his laborers. Matt's quote was very close to the other company's quote, so despite the potential long wait, I went with Matt Conyers. Reasons were: Matt was hands-on with direct experience repairing this specific problem, Matt recommended a long-term, safer solution, Matt would shore up the deck relatively quickly to prevent potential deck collapse until he could complete the work, and I was OK with staying off the deck for up to six more weeks since summer was practically over, anyway. On 10/11, Matt came to my house and accepted my check for 40% down. On 10/13, Matt & his laborers shored up the deck, removed the rotted support beam, removed all of the decorative vinyl from underneath, (which I never wanted to see again so I can more easily inspect the support lumber in the future), and dug three new holes near the house for the new posts. They did not disturb the nearby sprinkler line, which Matt said he would repair at no additional charge if they broke the line. They left the grounds clean and free of debris, piling lumber still-to-be-used neatly onto the nearby concrete patio until work could resume. On 10/21, one week and one day after starting, Matt called my cell at 5PM and said they finished repairs. He asked to come by the house at 7:30PM to collect the remainder, which worked with my schedule. I got home at 6PM and inspected the work. They left the grounds clean and free of debris. I pushed h****** each of the six posts, and nothing budged. I walked about the deck surface and it was comfortably firm and more structurally sound than I ever remembered. Matt arrived as scheduled at 7:30PM & accepted my check for the remainder of the original estimate. There were no surprise additional charges. I will recommend Conyers Construction to my friends & co-workers, and consider Matt for any future deck expansion projects. I don't expect to need his services for future repair of the existing deck as it is very sturdy and structurally sound, now.

Larry and sons did a great job. They were the lowest of three bids and did high quality work. Probably as good or better than the other bidder with the same approach to fixing my problem. It took them longer to get to the job than I wanted, but that is because they are busy. They were respectful, professional and showed up when they said they would. The job took exactly as long as they quoted and they cleaned up after themselves. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!

Mr. Conyers came and gave us advice and an estimate, in particular there was a large post which needed to be replaced, not a standard size which he managed to locate and get in a very short period of time. His sons did the work over I believe a two day period and were prompt, professional, personable and did a great job. Since the work was done just before fall/winter, we are only now really able to enjoy their handiwork since Spring is coming.

Work STILL has not been completed. The roof is leaking due to faulty workmanship, which is now damaging the interior cedar planks, and boards behind siding (leaking behind wall as well as dripping into the interior). Finish caulking remains un-done. Paver flooring is uneven in areas, and has concrete splashed on it also. Repeated calls get "we'll get to it" or go unanswered. We have sent a certified letter on 9/12/2008, and contacted Channel 2 Consumer reporter, with no reponse from Matt or Larry.

After considering several Angie's List contractors I hired Conyers Construction to build a front porch roof over the existing concrete slab that was my front porch. Not only was I very pleased with the way the construction turned out, but I was also very pleased with the interaction that I had with the Conyers' folks. Unlike other projects, this felt like a collaborative effort. We had a good exchange of ideas during the design process and during the construction. I took to heart what one of the Conyers told me... 'If you want to change something, let us know before we do it.'. I asked for a few changes during the construction which were accommodated ( without being nickled and dimed !! ). These changes led to a better looking end product. There have been a few minor items to adjust after the construction but these have been dealt with. Larry initially came out to discuss the work and I presented my ideas and concept photos. Later, Larry and son Matt came out to show me their computer generated design. As a general note to anybody considering home improvement, I would recommend being very involved in your project. Conyers is great for that type of team effort. The job took longer than they estimated but that was not a big deal for me.

Larry Conyers made the original contact. It was clear from the onset that he knew his business inside out! He discussed styles, installation suggestions, component construction, and costs in a polite, witty, and professional manner. The contract was emailed promptly. Lead time was only two weeks. Larry's sons installed the pergola within one day, as anticipated. They worked in a nicely paced, competent manner and were friendly and courteous: chips off the old block! We commented on how well they work together. And they cleaned up the yard upon completion. The pergola is a wonderful addition to our home. We are very pleased.

The experience with them was kind of mixed. Partly I do not think we looked at the contract closely enough and there was some miscommunication, so we ended up with not the exact deck we wanted and they were about 2 months late building it. Overall, thought they did a good job on the deck and their prices were reasonable. They were very nice and professional throughout the whole experience. I would use this company again, but maybe not my husband.
