I submitted a request for service on November 15. Craig's electric was the top response with a nearly 5 star review. I noticed that his profile said that his specialties included drywall which I thought was fantstic as that would be the next step in our project. When he arrived a few days later to give me an estimate he seemed like such a nice guy and as a smaller business, I wanted to give him the work. I had one other electrician and one other drywall person from Angie's list come in to give me counter estimates. When I asked Craig about the drywall he said that his company opperated both in West Virginia and here in Richmond and that it was the West Virginia one where he had a team that did the drywall, however, he was capable of doing it on his own, I thought that this meant that it might just take a few more days to complete which was fine as again, I really liked Craig and was happy to give him the business. After getting the other two estimates, I hired Craig to do the project. For the electrical part of the project he turned up on time and I thought that things were going well. We did have an issue where some of the outlets were not working, but Craig seemed to be able to fix that quickly, half of the outlets were one way up and half the other and they didnt seem to be level, but I figured that was all cosmetic that could be fixed once the drywall was in when he went to put the caps on. Once everything was working I paid Craig for the electrical work and then he started in on the drywall. This was when our problems started. The work was going extremely slowly and Craig seemed to be having issues with the gentleman who was working with him. I had a hard deadline of the 14th of December when I had scheduled the floor to be installed. Craig said at the start that he would be done long before this and I had planned to paint the room before the floor went in. During this time, there were 5 days that Craig told me he would be here to work and simply did not show up, he also did not get in touch with me to let me know what was going on. On the days that he was here, the progress was very slow and he left early or came very late almost every day. There were several spots on the walls that the drywall was cut too small and when my husband and I asked about it, we were told that they could be filled in with tape. As we approached the 14th, we knew that the job was not going to be done in time. We discussed with Craig as we would have to wait another three weeks to get on the schedule for the floor install and decided that the mudding could be done after the floor went in. The mudding job was a disaster. I think that Craig just got in over his head. My husband tried to offer some advice and even purchased a couple of new sheets of drywall to replace the bits that were cut wrong. Craig choose to ignore this and kept making a bigger and bigger mess. He eventually brought his son in to help him in order to finish the job before Christmas. This entie time we tried to be extremely kind and understanding. On the 19th of December my father in law was over to visit and I showed him the room. He said he had never seen such terrible work, at that time I was not yet concerned with the electrical as I thought that the issues were cosmetic, my concern was with the drywall, my father-in-law felt otherwise and told me that I needed to get Craig out of my house as soon as possible as he clearly was not able to do the work. Despite my father-in-law's advice, I felt that Craig was a good guy who deserved the opportunity to fix his work. On the 21st of December Craig was headed bacl to West Virginia to spend Christmas with his family and we needed to pick up one of our Christmas guests in northern Virginia. Craig was here for a bit in the morning with his son to wrap up the final work. He was once again late showing up and we needed to get on the road. We waited patiently, never telling him that we needed to get on the road, when he came to get me to tell me he was done I was shocked by the state of the room. Everything was completely covered in inches of drywall dust and the air was thick. I looked around and was taken aback by the mess. Craig and his son had pulled up the paper I had put down to protect the floor and ground drywall dust and chunks into my brand new floor. The mud on the walls might as well have been thrown up there from opposite sides of the room, in one spot there actually was splatter accross the whole wall. Not a single wall was done done, all of it needed more sanding, some needed more mudding still and the issues that we had pointed out were still blatant issues. Craig was insisting that he had to leave for West Virginia but that he could come back after Christmas. This is where I made my biggest mistake. I felt sorry for him. I wanted him to have the money for Christmas. So I paid him. At that moment I was not fully appreciating the amount of work that still had to be done. Craig left and we rushed off to pick up our guest. We spent the next two days just trying to deal with all the mess from the dust. I had to pick drywall mud clumps out of my rugs all over the house, the dust in the room settled inches thick and under that dust there were huge gauges out of my brand new floors. When the dust settled we saw just how bad the job was. When we went to plug in our shopvac to clean up the unbelievable mess we discovered that the majority of the outlets were not working. We had to use an extension cord from another room to run the shopvac to clean up the inchest thick dust they left. In a moment of fate, I happened to be on the phone with my mother in my driveway after walking the dog when I noticed drywall screws in my driveway. What must have been an entire pack of black drywall screws had been dropped and strewn all down the driveway and I was so lucky that I saw them as we had many guests decending on our home the next day and someone certainly would have lost a tire. On December 27th I started texting Craig again to see when he could be back. to finish the job. This was more than just a little sanding that needed to be done. No response. I texted again on January 1 saying that I needed him to be back Monday morning. On monday morning I texted again saying that I did not expect him to come due to the storm, but did need a response. This time he did respond and told me he could come Tuesday at 11. At 12:11 on Tuesday I texted again asking for an update as he had not shown up yet. He finally showed up and told me he was on his way back to West Virginia, but he was going to get his father who actually had the drywall business to come back with him and finish the job. He told me with they would get it done and that they would fix the electrical issues. He promised me that he would be back on Thursday, January 6th. That was the last I heard from him. I gave him several weeks, I texted many times giving him the opportunity to right the situation. I was always kind and understanding, I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. However, we are now past that. I had to have another electrician come in, he told me that there was no way that Craig was licenced, he had never seen anything like it. He had to replace both of the connections to our electrical box as he said that they were the wrong kind and dangerous, he had to reconnect every single outlet as they were improperly installed, he also had to replace two of them as they had been compromised due to the improper installation. We were very lucky that this did not cause a fire. We were lucky to get that sorted for only $325. We have also had to hire a new drywall person to fix the mess that was made of the drywall. That is costing us $500 plus materials. We have not yet been able to have the damage to the floor assessed and this does not account for the massive loss of time. This entire job should have been done well before Christmas. I think that Craig is a very nice person who got in well over his head and he has responded extremely poorly. However, he should not be allowed to do this to another peson. Angie's list needs to look into his license and ensure that he actually is licensed n
