Bottom line is that I think we ended up with a good fence and the pricing was fair. Communication was lacking and there was some inattention to detail that I ended up addressing myself. I believe that DBC is capable of quality work but dealing with them can be time consuming due to poor communication and follow-up. You'll need to have a lot of patience and be sure to carefully inspect your fence before the crew leaves your property. I have more fencing work to be done in the near future and I'm undecided whether to use them again. The whole reason for hiring fencing contractors was because I just don't have time to do the work myself. In the end we are happy with the fence they built but it would have been nice if things had gone smoother with scheduling and keeping us in the loop.
The good:
DBC Fence replaced the fencing along the front of our home. The existing cedar picket fence was falling apart due to age and storm damage. Two new gates were built and wooden posts were replaced with steel posts. The quoted price was fair and competitive with other quotes we received, particularly considering the gates. The demolition and rebuild was done quickly once the crew was onsite. The crew was polite, answered questions, and did a decent job of keeping the working area clean and free of debris. It looked like they dug post holes nice and deep and mixed concrete onsite using a generous amount. The materials appeared to be good quality, the fence looked great when they were done and the gates opened smoothly.
The not so good:
Communication wasn't the greatest with this company. While someone arrived in a timely manner to do measurements the actual written quote took over a week to arrive due to "computer problems." That wasn't a huge deal since it wasn't an emergency but it turned out to be indicative of future communication. There were some delays in getting our project started due to weather, no fault of DBC. On the day our job was supposed to start, we weren't given an estimated arrival time and my wife waited around the house all day until the crew finally arrived near the end of the day. On the first day new posts were set and the crew said they would be back on Saturday to finish. I didn't expect anyone to work over the weekend but that was their call. For some reason they stacked all the old fence panels by the street in front of our house before leaving. No idea why they didn't do the haul away but I figured no big deal if they were coming back the next day. We waited until late afternoon Saturday and called to check in. We were told that the crew would return Sunday instead. Odd, but OK. So we waited around the house Sunday and that didn't happen either. The crew ultimately didn't return until late Monday and the old fence debris was on our front lawn the whole weekend and most of Monday. Monday evening the fence was complete and looked OK on initial inspection. The next weekend I went to water seal the fence and and noticed a couple of things that bothered me. First, the pickets were secured to 3 cross beams and the middle of the pickets were nailed with a single nail while the top and bottom received the usual two nails. I don't know if this is a big deal but it seemed odd. Conserving nails? Second, I noticed that there appeared to be quite a few lag screws missing on the brackets that secured the cross beams to the metal posts. There are two holes for screws on the brackets and about half the holes only a single screw was used. The use of one vs two screws was kind of haphazard. Again, I don't know it this is a big deal but it seemed sloppy. I emailed DBC initially and didn't get a response after about a week. I called and left a voice mail and didn't get a response after a few days. I called again and got a hold of Steve the owner. He apologized and said he'd come back out that Friday and take a look. Friday came and went and nobody came out. I called and left another message. I got a call back from Rachel a few days later saying that the guys would come out that morning. Nope, nobody came out. I decided it was going to be easier to just address it myself. It only took about 15 minutes and I used about 40 screws. Not a huge deal and maybe it doesn't affect structural integrity of the fence - I don't know. It seemed like we got blown off on this issue. Considering that DBC knew we were planning on doing more fence work (they quoted for the additional work to be done later in the year) I'm puzzled by this. I'm left not certain I'd hire them to do the next fence section.

1. The fence was put up in a reasonable fashion. During the build time we keep asking why the fence posts and rails were not black as we requested. No response from DBC, until they presented us with the bill and said it was not part of the job. Both my wife and I remember specifically discussing the issue with Rachel Brunson who claims she never heard us. This issue was never resolved, just ignored by DBC because they could not admit error.

2. The project included a customized electronic gate. In the past several months it has been functional less than 25% of the time. DBC cannot or will not meet when they say they will. DBC has missed virtually every appointment and have rescheduled appointments on average 3 ? 5 times for each problem.

3. They in our opinion are unprofessional. Always blaming others for their mistakes. For example two of our many issues with the gate were caused by other contractors. DBC quickly blames others for everything that?s wrong. In both cases we were requesting the gate to be fixed before the other contractor caused damage. In my opinion if DBC had been prompt and met scheduled appointments then the other contractors causing damage would have been avoided. DBC?s negligence has cost us thousands of dollars in repairs.

4. DBC will not be working on this fence or gate again. They are just plain negligent in responding to customers, don?t care about scheduling appointments, sometimes come to the house and work without telling anyone they are on site so we have no way of telling what they may have done and at this point we cannot trust them

Updatee

We have had a second gate company look at the gate installed and they said it was poorly designed and would need to be made stronger to hold the gate. The post installed and hinges in their opinion are to weak for the gate that was; ;installed.

Regarding the owners comments, its a he said she said situation and we stand by our findings.

Response from Brunson Fence Company
"As the owner of DBC Fence, I Stephen Brunson will have to say that we gave the customer the fence they wanted to spec. They decided after job was complete, because we did meet several times on site during the construction process, and they saw the drill stem and the varied color, that they wanted the fence to be black. They pointed out the neighbors fence, drill stem, and in areas may look black, but is not, and it was explained to them. We did discuss with them that if in fact they wanted it black, it would be additional, as it would have to be painted. As contract was written and signed, it never specified black on pipe, only drill stem. The gate was damage the first time from car being park in front of gate and the second time it was damaged by sprinkler installers, both of which are not warrantied issues. During one visit with the homeowner, they were shown where the exit probe and wire were buried and apparently was not communicated to the sprinkler crew. This customer lived out of town while we were constructing fence. Rachel kept in constant communication with BOTH husband and wife during the build. There was nothing wrong with the gate, except minor dragging, which we fixed promptly, or operator until the car and contractors did damage. There was a problem a couple times with the key pad which we did promptly take care of and upon request sent them new programing instructions for future reference since they could not find the original instructions left with them. Admittedly, we did miss a couple of appointments but we have tried to make right the wrongs that were caused by others, but not for free."

Upon contacting DBC Fence I was greeted professionally by Rachel who came to my home a couple of days later to provide an estimate which I received timely. Of the three estimates I obtained her's was the only one that was thorough and clear as to what would be done and in what manner. DBC was not the cheapest price (the cheapest wasn't going to use concrete on the posts) I got or the most expensive, but I was impressed with the professionalism of their offer. I signed the contract and mailed in my deposit. The installation crew showed up on time and worked very hard for two days completing the work. The 2-man crew worked like a well-oiled machine in processing the work. The were polite and friendly. Shortly after the work was done, I noticed a couple of minor issues where some ties were missing. I contacted Rachel on a Friday and she said they would come out Saturday to make corrections which she and her husband Steve did, themselves, as promised. While they were at my house they noticed a couple of other minor things the installers missed and said someone would be out Monday to fix the items. These were things I would have never noticed. The fixes were made on Monday as promised. I am left feeling like I have a great product, obtained good service and know if anything else comes up, it will be addresses promptly. I will definitely use DBC fence again and recommend you do as well. My money was well spent.
Was concerned when DBC wanted 70% of the job up front. Only gave 50% up front. Owner called on Christmas Eve asking for 25% more so he could pay his employees.
It is a given that this was a cold winter and was difficult to get things done timely, however DBC Fence seemed to be unfamiliar with painting and treating iron fencing. Even their employees stated that they didn't paint iron fences. They missed serveral opportunities to paint and complete the job. They worked short hours and not at all on Saturdays or Sundays even if the weather was good. Due to weather they were unable to work for several weeks but left tarps on the ground and plastic wrap all over the yard.
When they decided to paint by hand, the owner was only going to paint the half of the fence in my yard. Painting only half of a rod iron fence is almost impossible. It just seemed like a way to get my neighbor to pay them more.
In the end the job was finally completed and looks good. Both sides of the fence were painted. They did not replace the stones that were along the fence that they moved to paint and they did not haul off one of the columns as promised.
I am sure they are a fine company and will have lots of reasons why this was the weather and my fault but I can not recommend them and I would not ever use them again.

I needed a partial backyard fence replaced since my neighbors had done 2 sides but I still had one side to get replaced with the last neighbor. I searched Angie's list for a good company and decided on DBC after reading reviews and especially after seeing the high histogram score this company had.

After calling for an estimate I was given a quote and went ahead and scheduled the job. I had to have one whole side replaced and about 1/4th of an opposite side with a gate replaced. Although they allowed for two days, the job was finished in one day. The materials used were much better than the sides done by the other neighbors. The wood was cedar, treated and wider, nicer planks than are usually used and it looks much nicer. They were very professional, handled my requests and hauled off all the debris including the branches that they cut. Unlike the people that worked on my back fence, they did not puncture a sprinkler pipe and assured me that if they did, they would fix it.

I was also impressed because although this was a small job, they still treated me professionally as if it were any large fencing job. I would definitely use them again.
We had a horrible experience with a previous mason who left us high and dry without completing the project. All we needed done was to add a railing down the center of our newly constructed stone steps, patch a tiny section of mortar and build up some mortar on one of our existing columns. DBC did it all! Rachel is easy to work with, communicates well and follows through on all of the bidding and administrative tasks. Two men showed up at the time they were scheduled to, we showed them what needed to be done and they set to work. They made certain the railing was level, used the correct type of cement in order to set it, primed and painted the railing in our choice of color and were all finished in a few hours. They were great to work with, easy to communicate with and seemed to be very knowledgeable. Overall we were VERY pleased and highly recommend them.
It took us about six months to reach an agreement, the initial contact having been made shortly before Christmas and progress was slowed by the holidays, bad weather, the difficulties of running a very small business, a change in our preference necessitating a new bid, and the need to get our neighbor's agreement on the final decision. But when it came down to it, Stephen delivered a beautiful product which has drawn many an approving comment from passers by. This is a family business which was begun by his father many years ago -- he knows it thoroughly and has, I believe, two fully trained crews. The team he sent to us is two brothers who have been with him for quite awhile, and they worked amazingly fast and efficiently. I expected it to take about a week to get the old fence out and the new one in, but they did it in about 2 1/2 days!
Although it was a relatively small project, DBC Fence did a great job, designing and building a custom wrought iron handrail for our front porch steps. They matched the handrail design to existing ornamental wrought iron door trim, even adding some design flourishes to augment the overall look. We were very pleased with the overall result as well as the punctuality and professionalism of the crew.
Great experience with this company! I needed to have a wrought iron fence repaired on my second floor balcony. It was loose and not sturdy. DBC came out and gave me an estimate which was a great price. Since it was a small job I was concerned that I was not going to be able to get a compnay to come out and do the work for a reasonable price. They did a quality job. It is a family run business and everyone that I dealt with was very pleasant and attentive. I would recommend them to all of my friiends.
After asking for quotes from several contractors without a single one even showing up I contacted DBC. Rachel had us a quote the very next day and included every option we could have. This included split costs with our neighbors, gate replacement, and the other side as well.
After we agreed on the contract they showed up as scheduled and pulled down the old fence and set the new posts. The following day a larger crew appeared and hauled off the old fence. At that time Stephen personally reviewed the posts that had set over night. We watched them pull up an entire side and reset them. He then apologized and said they would have to wait one more day because he was not pleased with the original posts. He was adamant about maintaining quality over speed.
The next day (Day 3) the fence was complete. It is top notch and with top quality lumber. Both of my neighbors and I are very pleased and would have no problem with recommending DBC.
I would like to mention also that about a week later one board that was part of the gate hardware split and offset the latch a little bit. I contacted Rachel and she responded a few hours later. They came out and fixed the gate within 2 days of my request.
e.Stephine came out and did the estimate. She was very friendly. They then sent me an estimate of the charges and gave us a detail of what would be the cost. Made note that we would like them to take the old fencing with them. Approx. three weeks later she called and i advised her we would not be able to do the work at this time. she was understanding and stated that just let them know when we were ready . No pressure from them. Very happy with the over all experiance.
DBC arrived and started to install the fence. Once the work was started we asked them to stop for an afternoon until we could decide if the location we were putting the fence in was really the location we wanted the fence. They came back the next day and completed the work. The fence and gates look beautiful.
