Based on the recommendation of a neighbor, I hired Decks, Etc. to convert a covered back porch into a cedar screened porch and remove some wrought iron railing in the process. It went well at the beginning: Cheryl came out and sat down with me and we discussed the project and what needed to be done. I had a previous commitment that required the work to be completed within two months, and she said that the deadline would not be a problem. We ran into issues almost immediately. Initially, the weather delayed the beginning of the work for a couple of weeks. That was not Cheryl’s fault. After the weather cleared, however (and after I had paid her the first half of the total cost), she just disappeared. Repeated telephone calls and emails to her got the work started, but then the project ground to a halt for weeks. I was left with the wrought iron railing in a pile on my pool deck and the project framed out. But the wood was unfinished, no screens or doors were installed, and an electrical outlet was left hanging on an outside wall. My efforts to get Cheryl just to schedule the completion of the work were largely ignored. If she called me back or replied to my e-mail inquiries, it was only after lengthy delays. Thus, the project was left half done and I had no one to complete it. Eventually I got a minimal amount of attention from her, which was enough to put me into contact with her subcontractors and work out the completion of the project, mostly on my own. Cheryl, herself, was a ghost. Finally, toward the end of the project, and when payment of the other half of the total was due, I began to hear from her. However, even the most fundamental requests took at least a week or ten days to generate responses, and her replies were perfunctory and frequently did not even address the questions that I had asked her. Some of the installation work was slipshod - the caulking around some existing columns had to be repainted; the framing around a screen door had to be cut to fit; another screen door did not close properly, and the exposed electrical outlet was a concern to me when it rained - and I had to coordinate the repairs with Cheryl's subcontractors or even do the work myself. I never saw Cheryl again after our first meeting. Ultimately, I felt as though Cheryl’s only value was as a source for subcontractors. But I wound up contacting the subcontractors and coordinating much of the work myself. In the end, the completion of the project was months overdue; but fortunately for me, my previous deadline had been extended. Even then I was pestered for final payment on an invoice that I had never even been sent and I don’t know if she ever came back to check the work. Although I had originally liked her personally, I would never use Decks, Etc. again, and I cannot recommend them.
Response from Decks Etc
"There were several problems that resulted in the delays on this job. The extensive periods of rain, waiting on the painter to get free to stain the cedar and then [Member Name Removed] family Illness. Shortly after we started this job, my stepmother had [Member Name Removed] massive heart attack. Once she was out of the hospital and recuperating, she fell and broke her back and [Member Name Removed] rib. Needless to say, she required extensive care and subsequently I was unable to give the proper attention to my customers as well as to supervise the crew. She is now in physical therapy and recovering nicely and I am able to resume my work."

Very well. They were backlogged, so it took a few weeks to get started, but they did a great job. I would have appreciated better communication as I had to call them to find out the status of next steps along the way. However, they were always helpful and professional.

If I could rate this company zero I would! Cheryl bid on our huge backyard patio job, and acted as if she could do it all no problems! She used substandard materials, didn’t get landmarks approval (she said it wasn’t necessary) causing us to be stuck in a muddy backyard mess for months with no work being done. In the middle of our project her main crew workers quit on her. She eventually stopped returning our calls and even failed to respond to a legal letter of explanation describing the unfinished and substandard work. In the end she abandoned the project. We had to hire a new company and pay to have half of what she had done removed and restarted because of how badly it was done. I’m talking not up to code. Mold after just a few months, shaky not stable construction, haphazardly put together. Heard from two other home owners she did the same or similar to them. Horrible!
Response from Decks Etc
"It is so unfortunate that in 2019 you have this issue on a job that was started in 2016 and only partially paid for. There was an option given to pull a permit and the customer chose not to. There were too many changes and false information given regarding the job that we had no choice but to question the intent of the customer. No legal letter regarding any issues was ever received. The job was changed almost daily and it was impossible to keep up with the change orders and pin down the actual scope of the job. The amount was NOT close to 90,000 as stated in the complaint. Payments for change orders were not received so work was not completed. It is unfortunate that this occurred and fortunately for us we have customers that have and continue to enjoy our work which is shown by the high rate of A reviews. We are passionate about our work and have every intention on making beautiful outdoor living spaces. Unfortunately in this case we failed to uphold our standard of excellence due to the overarching expectations of a customer who was unwilling to pay for the changes she expected."

Cheryl was great to work with. Very professional and responsive and I would definitely hire again and/or recommend to friends and family. Rated "good" on punctuality because of a little delay in getting all the debris picked up.

Recently had a screen room built by Decks, Etc. Couldn't be more pleased with the final product. I don't expect everything to go perfect, but I judge a business by the finished product and how they react to an issue. I had real problem with the door. I asked the owner to come look. They agreed with the issue and offered me an upgrade at no additional costs. That is REAL customer service. I was also impressed with the responsiveness of the owner. we communicated via text. Always got an answer within the hour even after normal business hours. I have told the owner they give my name as a reference any time.

Keith Williams is the definition of professionalism. Not only is his work incredible, but he is extremely personable. We replaced a wooden gate and section of fence with a wrought iron gate. Keith discussed all possible options that might work well with our needs. He did not try to up-sell any features; if anything, he mentioned some aspects that might save us money. We ended up choosing a single 10-foot gate with small sections on either side. The project took 3 days, but the first day was mostly setting the posts and allowing the concrete to set. Keith and his assistant were always punctual. I highly recommend him for your wrought iron fence and gate needs.

It went very smoothly. This was 125' of fencing and took 2 days, after which they cleaned up everything. We will definitely re-hire them should we have similar needs again in the future.

Based on Angie’s List rating, I hired this company to remove and replace a deck. Ms Henderson assured me her staff is very Competent. Not True! Her deck installer damaged my house and left two 4” square holes in my roof. The roof was leaking into the room below. Ms. Henderson would not return my calls and would not come back to my house and view the damage her staff caused. I personally had to remove all of the installation myself and hire a roofer to repair and replace my roof which cost me $2200. I also had to hire a contractor to repair the damage to my house. Cost? Have not received the bill yet. I will add more to this review later.

Everything was excelllent. Alex and Keith were professional, dedicated to task, kept me informed about anything that I needed to know about the project, resulting in a deck that has received compliments from family and friends while improving the look of my property. Called Cheryl about getting a quote. I was contacted by Alex the same day saying she would be out the following day at 1:30 pm. 2:30 the following day Alex had not shown up. Called Cheryl, regarding the appt. Cheryl stated, "Alex has been sick, let me call her." Alex called back & told me she had overlooked my appt asked if she could come the next day. Never apologized, but I told her ok. I chose Decks Etc regardless based on Angie List reviews, which I now question as to whether legitimate or not, & the fact they told me they could start in a couple of weeks. Work started 8/9. This is when things went downhill: 1) the installers set my 1st post on a post based on my next door neighbors fence post which set my back fence about 4-5" back further than my original fence. According to Cheryl no one does surveys anymore so it should not be a problem. 2) once the back part of the fence was put up I noticed (see photo #1) they had trimmed boards to get around a 2x4 that was laying in the yard behind me. It took longer for the installer to trim the boards than to pick up the board. I called Alex & she had Cheryl come out the following day. Cheryl asked me me if I wanted to have it fixed. It required 20 boards to be replaced. 3) installers came out the following day, apologized, & said they would take care of it. A few hours later I walked out & most of the boards had been replaced but they also used boards that had been previously trimmed which were too short. I asked the installers why. They replied they ran short. They didn't call the office, nor did they say anything to me, they took it upon themselves to make the decisions use old boards. I called Alex, and they had to go to Lowes for more boards. 4) after the work was completed, no one came out or followed up as to whether I was satisfied with the job, but they were quick to send an invoice. 5)I had askedAlex as to whether a $100 coupon was valid for my fence. She said she would get with Cheryl & let me know. Surprise! No follow up from Alex. 6) I hope i can upload photo #2 which shows more trimming of boards, which results from the fence being set back 4-5" from my original fence thus putting in part of the flower bed of my neighbor behind me. 7) seem to be having issues uploading photos. You can contact me at: tegoyer@yahoo.com & I will be happy to send photos along with explanation.

Although I would use them again, we had to call them back to finish up.  A couple of parts of the job were left undone.  When we called it to the owner's attention, they sent someone out to finish. Response to estimate request was fast. Good about calling back.

Decks, Etc. did a fantastic job on both our projects! We were so impressed with the work Cheryl's crew did on our first project, we hired Decks, Etc. again to install our fence. Both times we received the same high quality workmanship, competitive pricing, and utmost professionalism. Top notch!

Amazing!! Decks Etc far exceeded what we expected!!! Owner was very professional and their price couldn't be beat! We have a hilly back yard that was challenging to fence in and we were shocked how perfect it looked! They were fast too- Whole job was done in a day and a half. The crew was very meticulous and left our yard clean. Our neighbors keep complimenting us- we're super happy!! We're planning on using them in the future for a deck and a garage.

Cheryl Henderson and her team did a great job replacing an old fence.  They installed a cedar fence with an "X" look for each section instead of the normal 3 horizontal boards.  They also installed a cap board and trim, which looks great.  They were very meticulous in their work, paying a lot of attention to detail.  We ended up with a beautiful high quality fence at a good price.  Cheryl was very easy to work with and we highly recommend the Decks, Etc team!
