This provider was to build a usable and complete nook (with storage) for a small kitchen condo. After going through the Angie's List Snap Fix option on my phone, I provided the SnapFix Concierge Pinterest photos of the style of work that I wanted to be completed and they tasked me out to Doug Stephenson Fine Wood Working & Home Services . He came by to get a visual on the work and asked us if we wanted to use stained wood or have the wood painted. With the use of stained wood, he stated the quote would be more expensive, so we went with painted wood. He called a few days later and provided a verbal quote of $2200 for the work over the phone. We knew that there would be an above and beyond cost to purchase the multipurpose foam and material for the seating in the nook and had already began looking at outside sources for this requirement. However, Doug did not provide insight that painting was not included in estimate until after the job was complete and he had already been paid. During this entire estimate and building process, he asked us what color we wanted to use (which would mean he had factored in the painting) and when we would be available for two days straight for his painting sub contractor (or "Paint Guy" according to Doug). These two reasons, plus the fact that he didn't point out that painting would be above and beyond, like the foam padding, led us to believe that he was scamming us. We addressed him regarding his inability to complete the project, he stated, "I'm just a carpenter, not a painter". That was never a factor in quote and was very unprofessional. No attempt was made to be remotely understanding of the fact that his verbal quote was lacking this important information and generally he showed his truly unprofessional behavior by thinking that it is normal to pay a general contractor for complete services and the sub contractor for their independent work. I've been in the Department of Defense contracting realm for quite a few years and never have I had to pay a general and a subcontractor individually. I don't think home services is to far off the mark for that to be applicable as well. Also, if you look at the title of his business, Doug Stephenson Fine Wood Working & Home Services , nowhere does it imply that he is ONLY a carpenter. While the construction of the nook is spot on, the inability of the vendor to complete this work shows his truly unprofessional nature.

Response from Doug Stephenson Fine Wood Working & Home Services
"The member called me on 11/05/14 and scheduled an appointment for me to meet with her on 11/12/14. She requested an estimate for a custom built kitchen table as well as a custom built booth with storage. They told me I was the 4th contractor they had met with and acknowledged that I was the only one who understood their needs and was experienced enough to complete the project. I discussed their options with them and asked if they preferred "stain-grade" or "paint-grade" wood. They chose paint-grade in order to save money. On 11/18/14, I gave a verbal estimate of $2200 to design and build the booth and table. Rather than waiting for a written estimate, she asked that I get started right away because she wanted me to finish before Thanksgiving. She excitedly commented on the "great price," and I began work on 11/20/14. I completed the project on 11/24/14. During my final day on the job, her husband met with the painter I recommended. The painter gave him the option of leaving the inside of the storage space unfinished to save money, which he agreed to. The painter said he'd follow up with a written estimate and also indicated he would not be able to start the project until after Thanksgiving. That same day, he paid me the balance due, acknowledging what a great job I had done. She followed up later with a text message saying the same thing. On 12/2/14, I sent her a message asking for her email address. The painter had forgotten to acquire that information. She seemed surprised there would be additional costs. I was taken aback by her reaction. I wondered why they paid me the total amount due if they didn't think I'd finished my work. During our initial conversation, we had discussed painting and upholstery options, but I never indicated I would be doing the work. I recommended an upholstery store I have used, and told them I can refer them to a painter I trust. In my 30+ years as a carpenter, I frequently make referrals to my clients for painters, plumbers, electricians, etc. I do not employ subcontractors. As a businessman, I know that best practices include providing a written estimate, and I should have provided one regardless of the circumstances. I believe this led to the misunderstanding, and for that, I apologize."

Doug designed and remodeled 2 bathrooms in my condo. His price was fair and he started and completed the project in the time promised. He is very professional and courteous. My bathrooms turned out better than I expected. I was especially impressed with the cabinetry work, which he designed and built himself. I will be using him again when I remodel my kitchen.

Doug refinished some teak cabinet doors on my boat. These were very tricky, as the veneer is thin and delicate, and they needed the old varnish sanded off. I was worried that sanding might damage the veneer, but no problem. The doors look like new, and teak veneer is intact!

He also solved a unique problem for me at the marina. I needed to figure out a way to stow my kayaks. He designed and built a very nice solution, using pressure treated wood, to survive the salty environment.

Happy with the results of these jobs, I also had him replace a window at my house.

Hire this guy only if you want the work done on time, at a reasonable price!
