This guy is great. Quality work. Positive attitude. On time. Good communication for scheduling and work to be done. After several less than savory experiences with other handymen, I finally found someone who will give me an honest, straight answer about how he can or cannot help me and how much it will cost. He is extremely competitively priced. Only $30 an hour. More than fair. He even tried to talk me out of paying for an hour of work he did. I didn't feel right about that of course and paid him for it anyway. He is a pleasant and rather jovial guy who was a pleasure to work with. I will be hiring him again for various things that pop up around our house as my sweet hubbie has not a handy bone in his body.
I called Ed at 3:30 on a Monday because I had a cracked PVC pipe in my front yard. He came out right away and although he did not have the proper tools for a permanent fix, he diagnosed the problem, completed a temporary fix and explained exactly what we needed done by a professional plumber. The price was more than fair for his time spent, especially on short notice on a cold February afternoon/evening.

Binkley never showed for the first week and a half! This was after I paid him a $456 deposit on the $1,356 bid for the job. When he did appear (he said he had been sick) he started the job well enough. He repaired a 2' x 6' section of the kitchen ceiling, then installed new vinyl and replaced the toilets. He did this in less than a week. Then the problems really began to occur. It was hard to get a hold of him. He said he had VA Hospital appointments he couldn't pass up, he was working on another job, he had to go to Arizona to attend a daughter's wedding, etc. And when he was here he was asking my wife for money when I wasn't home. As I wrote, the bid was for $1,356 and it finally ended up costing us $2,106.77. And he didn't finish the job!! Today I noticed a drip in our kitchen ceiling because he never repaired the leak by the chimney on the roof! Now I am going to have to report him to the state licensing board. Binkley seems like a nice guy, but that is deceiving.

Excellent. Has a tendency to speak a lot--maybe could have shaved 1/2 hour off. Also had to go get a ladder and some tools. That cost an hour.

Called Ed and he stopped by that afternoon to look at several projects. He spent time but didn't really complete anything although I paid him $40 for something... I wanted a light moved and another installed, and a kitchen faucet replaced and possibly several other things. He returned to install the faucet. Although it was installed ok, it took a long time and he seemed overwhelmed by the project. He did not return or call to cancel the next appointment.
Response from Edward Binkley
"I don't believe over-whelmed would be an accurate description of how I dealt with the faucet installation. I have installed many before and since. As for the electrical installation/ relocation, if i did miss an appointment I sincerely apologize but it was my understanding that she had company arriving and I was to wait for her call to do the job. Like I said, if I was mistaken, I do apologize."

Mr. Binkley did the work very efficiently, used good quality wood and window sealant, worked carefully and kept the area clean. I had a smaller window done by someone else who didn't do such a careful job and charged considerably more. I would recommend Mr. Binkley for an array of handyman services.

I spent a couple of thousand dollars. I would not use them again and the work he did was adequate, but I never knew when he was going to show up. I would rather have someone that works by the hour rather than by the bid because there was time that I felt that it was more expensive than it needed to be. The communication wasn?t real good and he would sometimes show up when he was not expected, so it did not go quite well as I expected. The estimate was too high but the actual work was on target. He knew what he was doing.
Response from Edward Binkley
"In general, I would have to agree about the price but it was a bid. The bid included demoing an existing porch and roof. Re-framing and building a new porch and fixing any dry rot found in the process. There was a complete cement foundation under a wooden facade that neither of us expected to find which made the reconstruction easier than was originally anticipated. Plus there was an issue with the electrical that I needed to trace and repair. This is where an hourly would have been to the member's advantage. I more times than not will tell the prospective customer that an hourly would be the way to go but many want to know exactly what the cost will be and therefore ask for a firm bid. The bid can go either way as many in this business know from firsthand experience. I feel badly that the member thought the bid was too high but should the dry rot been more than what was found and the job took longer than it did, I would have thought it was too low. As for the timing, I again apologize for any inconvenience but being a handyman, I had other customers as well and needed to attend to everyone."

I called Ed thinking I would need to tear apart my entire bathroom to deal with dryrot problems. He arrived on time, assessed the situation and suggested 'plan A' of fixing a shower seam caulk problem. it took him 2-hours and $4.00 worth of materials to mend the leaking shower. We will wait to see if the moisture problem goes away or stays. If it does not clear up, he suggested 'plan B', which was a less-intrusive option of a small hole in the wall to assess the plumbing. He was very professional, and could have taken advantage of the situation when I told him I was mentally prepared to deal with thousands of dollars of repair for the tear-apart that would likely have to occur. I will definitely use Ed again, even if this does not fix the problem. He is extremely honest.

Ed's measurements were wrong even tho he came and measured several times, and I found a mistake in how he had planned on putting in the cabinet which would not have allowed the beverage center (mini fridge) to fit. I had to call him back, and he acknowledged that he made an error and came up with another solution. In the end that solution did not work as the mini fridge still did not fit and I had to deal with it myself. Also, he said that he would come back to put the cabinet doors on once he got them ordered but never has. It has been 6 months. Once I really stressed to him how important it was that he finish the job as I was going to have a reception at my house and did not want it to look bad. As always he promised to call back but never did. I have called him repeatedly, and everytime he is polite and says he will call me right back but then never does. I have called him at least 10 times since he partially completed the job. I am shocked that he has an award, I think his services may have been good at one time, but he is very busy now and does not seem to care about customer satisfaction once you cut him the check.

Went fine. He had to take down a little roof over the front door that was too low to allow the door to open, but my husband was able to put it back up good as new. It is really nice to have these up before the Winter.

Comments: Ed is so easy to work with. It went great. There were times when we hit snags, but they were more comical than crisis. I painted the cabinets, but Ed measured, advised, ordered, picked up, and installed them. I also purchased the hardware. He has a good eye and is great at demonstrating opportunities that present themselves in the remodel process for additional improvements. In my case, he suggested several opportunities for lighting improvements. He also caught poorly wired GFI outlets. Another unusual thing about Ed is that he considers cost and likes to reuse as much as possible and save money where it makes sense. He is a real shopper and loves a sale. He passes his savings on to his customers.

He had some health problems when he was doing the sink so there was a little delay there so I don't blame him for that. I would give him a B overall for the work.

Ed answered my call and came out the same day to give me an estimate for removing these space stealing eyesores from my family room. He was able to come out the next day to do the work, and actually reduced his estimate when he was about half way through. He said: "This is going a lot easier than I thought it would and I don't need to charge you that much." He did a quick, thorough job, and was very pleasant and professional. After he had finished, I patched the little screw holes and repainted the wall and it is like a new room! Plenty of space to put furniture now. What a pleasure to work with someone who (1) calls you back (2) is on time (3) does a good job and (4) is honest enough to reduce his original estimate!

The process went off without a hitch. Ed took the cabinets into the garage, ripped them down, and rebuilt them to work in an entirely new way, thus adding to my existing cabinetry rather than taking way. He resized the area for the microwave and rebuilt the wall oven cabinetry so that it became a highly functional storage space for pots and pans--complete with movable shelves. He trimmed down and saved a cabinet designed to hold awkward cookie sheets and cooling racks and refaced a drawer. He also pulled up the center island, repositioned it, and replaced it. I think what is key to my experience with Ed is that he did not look for the quick way to sort the cabinets and be done with the job. He asked me about various storage aspects of the existing cabinetry and asked me what I liked, did not like, and what did I think would be ideal. Even things that I had conceded to lose in the remodeled cabinets, Ed saved and made better.

Ed responded to my initial call and came to see why the door wouldn't open. He fixed it quickly and gave suggestions to my questions about the deadbolt and key hardware. We have had considerable cold air from under our doors. Ed suggested we install sweeps. Several days later he returned with sweeps to install...they have eliminated the cold air. He installed new door deadbolt and key hardware.

Ed was great to work with. He quoted a price over the phone and even though the installation was more difficult than anticipated, he only charged me what he had quoted plus the cost of some framing material he needed to replace. The new door and surround looks great!
