I purchased the provider's Big Deal of $79 for $200 Worth of Plumbing
Services. The big deal states that the deal can be used for installation of a kitchen sink OR can be applied to bigger jobs. I took this to mean that this sort of job fell into the price range of $200 worth of plumbing service. I spoke to Ed three separate times in early July to discuss the job and schedule the installation. In our first conversation, I asked if the kitchen faucet job was covered by the big deal. Ed said yes. He never indicated that the job itself cost more and that the $200 big deal could only be applied and I would be responsible for the balance. I left the conversation believing my interpretation of the big deal was accurate and the faucet installation costs $200. I scheduled the job with Ed. On 7/18/2014, I expected to meet Ed but instead he sent a subcontractor to install a
new kitchen faucet. I had met this gentleman, Jeff, before as he is another Angie's list provider who had been to my house before to give me an estimate for a different job. I did not hire him. Before he got started, I told Jeff that one of the shut off valves beneath the sink would not shut off all the way so I wanted it replaced. Jeff said he would talk to Ed and give me an estimate. He then explained the job would cost me an additional $175. I asked why so much to replace the shut off valve, and he clarified that the valve would be replaced as part of the faucet install which costs $375. The big deal was being applied and so a balance of $175 was owed. I signed the estimate and told Jeff to install the faucet since it was Friday and I would have been without a kitchen sink for the entire weekend. I had no other options lined up and felt extremely pressured to get the job done. I called Ed immediately to discuss this. Ed was very condescending in his tone and claimed that I should have known the job would cost more and that I should have called him to discuss the job in February when I purchased the big deal. I was not sure what he meant by that and he did not elaborate on his meaning. I said that he was the professional and expert, therefore he should have taken the time to explain to me what the overall job would cost at a minimum so I was prepared or could make an informed choice about keeping the big deal. He insisted he could not give me a quote without seeing the job first. I said if he knew the job would cost more than $200, regardless of whether or not there were any other problems, he should have been upfront about that. i told him I thought the deal was misleading and this would be part of my review. He said OK, and we ended the conversation. Before Jeff started the job, I told him that I had JUST had my cabinets refaced and that he was to be extremely careful to not damage anything. He indicated he understood. While Jeff was installing the faucet, I saw black marks around the base cabinets where he was working. I was feeling anxious and concerned about it but hoped it was all just grease and would be removed easily. During the job, I heard a blow torch being used, which I assumed was used to weld some joints. When he was done, I inspected the faucet and immediately saw the black marks all over my white laminate. I was shocked that he had me inspect the job with the cabinets still marked up so badly. I feared the marks could not be removed, otherwise he would have cleaned them off. The faucet and plumbing looked great so I focused on the marks. I started wiping them and most came off easily, though one took some scrubbing. Under this one stubborn black mark, I could see the white laminate was yellowed and indented, like a burn. I pointed it out and Jeff flatly denied doing it. He said it was a mark from when the cabinet installers had routered the edge. I explained that I had inspected the cabinets over and over ,from top to bottom, and that mark was not there before. As an aside, after I had the cabinets refaced originally (March 2014) I had Home Depot return and re-laminate certain areas that I was not pleased with, so I was sure what the laminate looked like before Jeff had started working under the sink. I said it looked like a burn and he said he did not use anything that would burn the cabinet. I pointed out that he had used a blow torch, and he seemed to acknowledge that but said little else to deny that fact. He left my house for about 5 minutes and when he came back, I said the spot looked like the laminate had been burned. He said OK, and that I needed to call Ed to have him take a look. He left with the estimate in hand and did not ask me to pay for the balance of the job. I immediately called Angies List to file a complaint and find out about the complaint resolution process. I was told by Chris that I did not need to call Ed and that Angies List would get in touch with him for me. Therefore, I did not talk to Ed about the damage specifically, and to date, he has not attempted to contact me.
