It will be difficult to write a review that adequately describes the magnificent job this contractor has done for us, especially under very trying circumstances.
Our finished basement was flooded and had to be virtually gutted. Our basement includes a great room, bed and bath, store room, large pantry/utility room and radio studio/office.
It was an insurance job and I could tell some contractors didn't want to work with an insurance company--now I know why. More about that later.
I meticulously went through Angie's list and read every review for contractors in the Northern Virginia area. I came up with a list of five or six that were in the area after reviewing their description, websites and customer reviews. They all seemed to be top-of-the line contractors. I don't know how I would have done this without Angie's list as a guide. I also took a bid from a contractor I got from another source.
I called each contractor and arranged appointments for a bid. I took notes on each interview and awaited their proposals. First, the interviews.
I was surprised that several of the contractors took very few notes--I was giving extensive, detailed and specific information because I obviously wanted all the bids to be based upon the same end-product--an apples to apples bid, in other words. A few of the contractors seemed to think they had total recall, and their bids showed it. They added things I didn't ask for, and forgot items I had been very specific about-- I was surprised. Jason, of Envision, along with one other contractor, took very good notes, which was evidenced by his bid.
One contractor never got around to giving me a final bid. His original "plan" was very far off from what I asked. The other bids were MUCH higher than Jason's. Now remember, this was an insurance job. While I didn't want to deliberately give the insurance company the highest bid possible, I certainly had no reason to just go with the lower bid--especially when the other bids were clumped together at a much higher figure. So why did I go with Envision Custom Builders?
Jason Mills, the owner. Unlike the other builders, Jason's presentation and bid were flawless.
Enthusiasm and Energy
Jason will blow your mind. He comes in ready to go! He's all business and obviously loves what he does. He offers very good suggestions, many of which are intended to save you money. He never had his mind on another of his jobs when he was working with me--I received his complete attention.
Quality From the first meeting, I arrived at the impression that quality workmanship was what I was going to get if I went with Jason. He really knows what he is doing. Quality is my highest priority and I knew I would get this with him. I was right.
Trustworthy and Frugal As I said above, he offered several money-saving suggestions. (like on the cabinet grade)--that doesn't add to his bottom line but he's obviously not in the business to take advantage of his clients. In all our discussions, changes and add-ons, he was always fair with his costs. This is the kind of thing that gives you great peace-of-mind when you're engaged in a high-stress project like repairing flood damage. For that matter, any major remodel is stressful. We've all heard stories about contractors who give a bid and then nickel and dime you into a much higher bottom line. This alone would be reason to choose Envision. I have a very sensitive "gut" with people--I know when I am being manipulated or played. Jason is a straight shooter--I never once had that nagging feeling with him that I dread working with contractors.
Punctual to a fault--if that could be possible! Just kidding.
For our first appointment, Jason arrived 30 minutes early--I thought I was late! He explained that he is never late, always arrives early and waits in the driveway or on the street until the apointment time. He was true to his word--he never came even one minute late to our appointments--amazing.
Excellent Documentation He always documented changes immediately and forwarded the documents to me ASAP. If he missed something--he immediately made the correction.
Organization and Communication Jason always knew what was going on, on the job. He was always on top of the schedule. He is a prolific emailer--keeping you informed every step of the way. He answers his phone! And he returns calls he misses--every time. He is available--that's important. He also never hesitated to go over details that in my opinion would make the difference between a mediocre and high quality finish.
So how did it go?
Dependable His people and he NEVER failed to show up on the job. He never missed an appointment.
Great Workers: His workers and subcontractors are dependable, punctual, clean, friendly and respectful. Their work ethic was excellent. I can'give them higher marks. Let me give you an example: I am a very meticulous person, very detail oriented. I selected a gorgeous wood-look tile for the floor of the great room, bath and kitchen. The tiles have a great number of variations in pattern--giving the finish product an incredible real-wood look. But I didn't want the tiles to be laid down just anyway. I asked Jason and the workers to lay the tile in a very random pattern. Jason encouraged me to lay the tile out just like I wanted it. In the evening a couple times, I went down to the basement and laid out first row of tiles along the wall so there would be no mistake. His tile setters followed it to a "T"--the flooring is gorgeous! BTW, I saw the same tile laid out differently on a website, very regimented and regular--it looked like a tile floor trying hard to be wood--the difference was startling. Their willingness to do it my way really paid off.
Working with the Insurance and Mortgage Company This is where my project almost derailed. I have never worked with a construction job relying on payment by an insurance company that had to be administered through the mortgage company. Because of a lack of communication on the part of my insurance adjuster, I had no idea that the mortgage company would need to be involved. My mortgage company's customer service is conducted out of India. What made the process so unwieldy and time consuming was the fact that no representative is assigned to the project from start to finish. I literally spoke to dozens of representatives--never once the same person twice. I had to repeat the same story every time. I won't go into the details--suffice it to say, it was a nightmare. Jason didn't get the money he was promised after the first check to cover the expenditures of the tile, cabinets and doors! We waited weeks and weeks for the check. Obviously this is NOT how a contractor can work. He was paying workers and contractors and getting no money to cover the costs. Finally the checks came in. I don't know if his experience has ruined Jason for further insurance work, you'd have to ask him. My advice to anyone is, call your mortgage company immediately and get their policy. Once the insurance check reached the $10K mark, they instituted an array of policies that delayed the cutting of the checks. We had a lot of paperwork that had to be completed and faxed. We had to endorse checks and send them to the company for endorsement and dispersal. Every single part of the process was attended by days or weeks of processing and delay. They also lost some faxes. Do this early in the process!
Despite the terrible experience Jason had with me and my job, when we resolved the "problem" we were back on track immediately. Jason was professional as always and we remained on good terms. I don't think every contractor would have put up with what Jason did.
Summary
When I was looking
