Original consultation was smooth and reasonably professional for a working remodeler. Performed work as agreed upon. The problem is his ongoing inattentiveness to the job; disappearing for days at a time. He finished the work, but it was supposed to take 1 month and it took 21/2 months. I had to threaten him. He has tendancy to always ask for money other than what originally agreed upon.
Paul did the work quickly and competently and stayed within estimate. He is personable and easy to talk to.
He worked on wall repair and door repair and lighting repair. The best contractor I've ever hired!

Paul came to us as a recommendation from a close friend who was using him for the second time for a bath remodel. After we met Paul in April and hired him to start a project in May, my friend began to express concern about Paul's work on her remodel. Since our first impression of Paul was favorable, we disregarded our friend's concerns, which in hindsight was a mistake. Paul started our project on Wednesday, May 8th. He didn't show up to work that Friday, and from there on his work hours were completely erratic and sporadic. We quickly got to the point of documenting when he actually came to work when it became clear there was no way the agreed-upon timeframe was going to happen. What was supposed to be approximately a 4 week project spanned over the course of more than 3 months, and Paul never fully finished the job. He did, however, get fully paid for the work. He repeatedly asked for payments even though he wasn't progressing on schedule, and we usually agreed hoping it would motivate him somehow to prioritize our job. He, in turn, took the money and went off to do other jobs. We kept records of the days and hours he actually worked, and the facts are that he repeatedly failed to show up even after promising to show up and taking our money. He also kept telling us that he was "working for free" and that he gave us "free things" even though they were in the original scope of the quote. A few weeks after he started he did encounter some problems with the structure of our bathroom and said he needed more money ($2800) which we paid him. Sadly, this did not prompt him to show up to work. He started showing up for an hour or so at a time at night or in-between his other jobs. He spent more time setting up and cleaning up than actually working. He kept saying he couldn't work for free-- even though we paid all but $500 of what we owed by early June. He kept saying that our bathroom was "rotten" (referring to the issue that we paid him the extra $2800), but he conveniently forgot that we paid him for the extra work. The next two months were sheer misery. He would lie and say he was coming and then just not show up. Most often, he didn't even bother to text or call to say he wasn't coming. We were without a bathroom for more than 3 months. While Paul did a pretty good job of the actual bathroom remodel, not only did he not complete the job, the air-conditioning in my son's bedroom and the bathroom aren't functioning properly anymore due to his re-working of our a/c (which he did not discuss with us before changing). His truck leaked oil all over our driveway that he kept reassuring us would be cleaned up easily before he left. On his last day/evening he tried to clean it using a homemade solution. We've since had to hire someone to remove the stain. He also cracked one of the large floor tiles while installing the baseboards. When I sent him a text about the crack, he became highly defensive (and outright nasty in the email) and accused the cabinetry people (even though the crack wasn't there until AFTER the cabinets were installed) and started on an email tirade that ended with me telling him not to text me again. Paul is a nice person, but he just doesn't have a handle on his business or his finances. He is very cordial "face to face", but then pulls a "jeckyll and hyde" and will send very crazy and rude texts. I'm sure there will be some sort of defensive response by Paul to these comments, but again, I have full documentation and records to back this all up. For our part, our family endured more stress from one person than any family should have to endure. We've owned several homes and done several projects, but I can honestly say that no one has ever caused this much stress in our lives.
"Guilty as charged on half of that mess. The cause was miscommunication. My inability to get them to see the problems and there unwillingness to pay according to the agreement. There house had dry rot and had to be totally rebuilt new floor joists, circuits etc. There electrical was a mangled mess of knob and tube with several bad remodels on top of the other. There duct work was not connected to anything I told them I could move a duct from the closet in there sons room or add a new one. They wanted cheep so I moved it. The ducts are run in 3 inch ducting Its just not done like that so yes it could be better if they were willing to spend an extra 15 dollars. I could go on about the problems but those tv shows you can watch on bad construction had nothing on there house and I changed what could be reasonably be done. One part they left out was that they didn't want to do the repairs that had to be done they asked me to leave the rotten floor joists because they are not going to be here that long. So it was my fault for fixing it yes she is a contract lawyer for a huge real estate company. I was over my head. I wasn't going to press the issue but I said thank you with a frown. The last day I was there they agreed to trade me the last of the painting to fix two sinks in there messed up but let's keep it anyway vanity in the shower room. They paid me and I said if you need anything call me. I charge 40 to change a tile I made that point when she text me and said I would fix it for free. She said I never worked for free I sent her the line items not in the contract and she asked me not to text her anymore. Ok what could I have done better? I could have made a better contract so I could have been protected. I could have complained less although it seemed they didn't hear them so well anyway. So this is my solution...the root of all the evils are extras. So extras or challenges not in my contract will not be done. I will give my customers the chance to get other bids perhaps but no more just fix at 74$ an hour."

Finally I decided if I had to sell the house it would have to be as is.
I would never be able to use the shower. The master bath remodeled
in 2010 but the shower pan done incorrectly. I was about to give up. Got quotes from several companies on Angie's list, very disappointing. Quoted from 5000 to 10,000 just so unreal. I called Building Expressions, Paul Estevez. Very nice, honest and conscientious. He was not sure about doing the job he was afraid there was a problem with the wood jousts in the bathroom area. I have a crawlspace. He did not have the time to do a repair on that if needed. Also it was constructed in such a way years ago repairs difficult.
He did decide to do the job. Most of the job he did. His helper was not always available.
He really did not make a big to do about the repair.
Once he opened up the shower floor water poured out of the shower pan liner in the area near the toilet so it probably was not the toilet flange that was the problem.
The shower pan was a total mess. Paul explained to
me all the problems, I could see them. If there were additional problems he would have to charge more as expected.
The bottom row of tiles were carefully removed and saved, so happy. Other companies that had quoted me would just rip out the tiles and would not care if they broke. The wood under the crawlspace was not as bad as he thought. He moved the drain, put in the shower pan and did the tiles and replaced one water pipe, additional charge for the pipe.
No big deal although it was a lot of hard work and difficult.
I did not need a whole bunch of people. My shower did not have to be ripped out as one company told me they would have to do. He did some other repairs for me around the house also not included in the shower pan price.
He did not have time to do one other repair he had to go do a remodel. Checked out his license on the state
website everything was ok. He even showed me his contractor?s license and driver?s
license that they matched.
Excellent and very happy problem solved.
I used Building Expressions to remodel our master bathroom in 2011 and again in 2012 for a portion of our kitchen remodeling. We have a custom built home and we were looking for a top quality job. Paul's significantly underestimated the amount of work required and therefore the cost. The job cost substantially more than his original estimate, but we feel the price paid was consistent with the effort required.

Paul is very knowledgeable and for the most part the quality of his work was good. He had to deal with some complex issues relating to installing impact sliding doors and ultimately came up with creative solutions.

The job was supposed to be done in about 7 or 8 weeks, but instead took six months. Paul selected an engineer for the plans who made numerous mistakes which delayed the Miami-Dade County inspections at every step in the process. Paul did a poor job in reviewing the plans and in resolving the issues with the inspections. Because of the delays in completing the job, Paul starting working on new jobs so our job became a nuisance for him. For months he and/or his workers would come to our house at the end of the work day or on the weekends. We had to resolve most of the permit issues with with the county by obtaining revised engineering plans and by meeting with the permitting officials. I had to go to the county permit office six times and each plan revision cost us $100+ in fees and several wasted hours of my time.

Overall, Paul is competent and a very nice guy. He would be great for remodeling simple kitchen and bathrooms. However, our project was large and complex and we were unhappy with how long it took to complete.
Response from Estevez Construction
"There were a number of reasons for the problems in this job and I must take blame for it just let me explain how it transpired. First of all the agreement I signed on for the seven original weeks did not include the doors, the structural repairs to the stairs or the modifications to the openings to the doors. These changes were major as I will describe in a moment but the root of the problem was of course cost. The first decision was the engineer I will stress here you get what you pay for. The engineer was the cheap one and of course I will never use him again but there were better options. The problems however were not all his fault either. The county was very unreasonable and wanted many things that were not reasonable and the bottom line is they were expensive. I could tell don was frustrated with the overruns due to the changes and wanted to help but I am not a mechanical engineer so many of the work needed to be done by others and I even did what I could to help but this was not my job. I did ask for a few hours of pay for these things but always less than the agreed on hourly rate. He constantly made it clear he wanted to keep the cost down and of course didnt understand that money will make all problems go away and the amount you want to throw at them will determine how quickly they do. Now to the structural changes. We are not talking about a few extra fasteners or two by fours. The stairs required 4x6 steel beams to be configured to hold up the stairs for the new floors this is one of the places where he was impressed and I did take the burden of more than half the cost. Next was the doors and again not small changes, besides the fact that they were four panel doors that weighed 300lb per panel and were over 14 panels in all they required closure of the openings(not in my bid). As is my way I did what I could in bearing the cost since I had introduced him to the engineer and the job went over in time but that in itself costs more time and they became an engineering feat and needed 12 foot long by two feet high steel reinforced concrete and some requiring steel beams bolted to the structure. To save cost I did all the welding and saved him a lot of money. In the end I was out many thousands of dollars and I truly believed that he understood what I had done for him and while I did leave him to do the footwork to close out the permits I felt I had more than paid my dues for the mistakes I made. Lastly I would like to say to anyone who hires a contractor. If more work is required and more work is done it is not going to take the same amount of time(unless you add money to the shorten it) and if you calculate the cost and the time spent, if it is only a fraction of the cost to time ratio in the original bid than you got a deal and should not beat up your contractor for that. I would have to agree with him as far as smaller jobs always work out well for me and it is only when I hire out tasks that the problems begin. I will put some pics of his house on my website though, it quite a work of art."

It went smoothly. Paul made us feel comfortable with him and his assistant. Paul is friendly and he comes every day that he says he will work. He even worked the last weekend of the job to finish on time! The only problem we ran into was the new toilet. Paul had to come back three times to fix a persistent leak. He told me that he never leaves a job until it is finished. That was true for us. He is always calm. The last time he came to finally fix the toilet, he helped me with a shelving project I was working on for no extra charge! He calls you back when you call him. He lets you know if he will be late. I cannot say enough good things about him. My wife and I had five estimates for our bathroom. He had the best price and we liked him the best. He takes his time. He takes pride in his work; he is an artist. I highly recommend him. Now I know I have someone I can consult with for future projects and hire if they fall under his expertise. He told me to contact him wherever he is in the future, even if he moves out of Florida!
I hired Paul of Building Expressions LLC to gut and remodel two (2) bathrooms in my home. Let me first say that Paul gave me a very affordable price compared to other service providers in my area. I also believe that Paul is a nice guy at heart. For these reasons, I am grateful. Overall, however, I did have a less than favorable experience working with his company on this job. Here's why:
1. Paul initially told me that it would take 2 weeks to completely finish both bathrooms; 1 week per bathroom. The project ended up taking 2 months, partly due to unforeseen challenges with the structural integrity of the bathroom, but mainly due to numerous scheduling conflicts with Paul's other projects.
2. The quality of the work, visually, is very nice. However, structurally it is sub par. Due to my budget and the agreed upon price, Paul did much of the work himself instead of subcontracting the appropriate experts. I knew and was comfortable with this at the start because I was reassured by Paul that he was competent in general contracting, tiling, lighting, and plumbing. However, the day after the job was completed, my toilet overflowed and dumped about 3 gallons worth of water onto my bathroom floor. Thereafter, the toilet continued to leak continuously, causing my water bills to leap from about $160 to over $700. After several visits and attempts to fix the toilet, Paul was not able to do so. I ended up hiring a licensed plumber (for $75) who made the quick fix of replacing $20 worth of parts inside the toilet. I've also since had problems with bathroom #2. More specifically, I haven't had working hot water for about 8 months in the sink and also experience seasonal leakage from the P-trap of the sink. Additionally, the plumber that I hired told me the that the plumbing infrastructure underneath the house was done all wrong and he itemized the faulty work.
3. The most frustrating and unpleasant part about this entire project though, was Paul's utter lack of responsiveness and adherence to appointments. Throughout the 2 month project, Paul missed more than 10 appointments in which he was to come and do work on the bathrooms. In nearly all of these, Paul did not notify me of his cancellation; neither in advance or afterwards. Routinely, I would set aside time in my schedule to be home for Paul to do work, and he simply wouldn't show up. He wouldn't call in advance to reschedule nor would he call afterwards to explain why he didn't show up. He said nothing. I would have to call Paul to ask why he did not show up, sometimes not hearing from him until the next day. This was unbelievably frustrating and showed a lack of professionalism and lack of respect.
My overall rating for Paul is a "C." What I liked is that he really worked within my budget to get the 2 bathrooms done. He was also very pleasant while working and was accommodating to my questions and needs as a first time remodeler. He worked with a smile and I believe he is genuinely a nice guy. However, I feel that he made the conscious decision to work at his own pace and on his own terms after we began the project. On several occasions, he complained about "not making any money on this project." I believe that he was upset with himself for quoting a price that was too low and thus decided that the project was not worth his full level of attention and professionalism. From my point of view, though, an agreement is an agreement. Since we mutually agreed on a price and a timeline, he should have honored the agreement and provided a higher level of responsiveness and professionalism.
I would not hire Paul again or recommend him to others.
Response from Estevez Construction
"It is important to reflect on mistakes for the sake of improving so I do try to do so. This is not a hobby for me I have been at it for decades and I take it very seriously. I can say he knew that when I started this job at least until he needed to make changes.. [member name removed] had a low budget I wanted to stay in it and I did there were several junctions when a higher budget would have made the difference. So in a nut shell the use of old fixtures is not recommended but when they fail you really should just replace them. The toilet clogged but he couldn't get it to plunge so I went there three times for free to use a plunger on the toilet he couldn't plunge. Then he heard it running so I changed the flapper. Than came the water bill and the demands that I pay it. I explained that since a used toilet isnt under my warranty no court in the land would make me do such a thing and he suggested I simply buy him a new toilet. (Guess my answer). There were several issues before the toilet thing but in my opinion while I was trying to be kind to his situation he was trying to take advantage."

First bath took a bit longer than planned due to some issues with the flooring (had to replace some plywood). Second bath was perfectly on schedule.
But I have to say the quality of work (especially tile) is very beautiful. We used a porcelain italian tile and it looks really fantastic. He also planed out some of the walls to make it look really even. This house (built in the 80's) had a lot of uneven areas and the new baths make the house look amazing.

Paul has such high expectations for his work and if it wasn't up to his standards, they redid the whole portion that didn't fit those standards. His standards were higher than we expected. He has great attention to detail and goes over each task with a fine tooth comb. It took about two weeks to complete the project. He is very friendly, open, honest and willing to listen. There was never any questions about what we owed him for materials and he was very honest with his labor amounts. The crew did a great job with clean up as well. You would never even know they were here. The work was done so well that a neighbor has already hired him for the work in their home.

Unfortunately, I had just completed what I thought was a masterful long and detailed review of Building Expressions when as I was getting ready to submit, my system crashed on me and all was gone. Although this may not be as passionate as what I just wrote, I hope the message gets through all the same.
Yes, Building Expressions far exceeded our expectations. The entire project was completed on time and on budget with the only exceptions being our own changes which Building Expressions didn?t charge us for since they were requested while in the construction phase. Not only is Paul a Carpenter, he's also an Electrician and Plumber, so the savings in just those two areas alone based on quotes I received covered half of the entire cost of this project. I also consider myself to be pretty particular, so Paul?s meticulous attention to detail was greatly appreciated. And where trust, experience and expertise is in short supply in this town, Building Expressions is truly rare entity. We have had plenty of contactors come and go and some that never showed.
Building Expressions is one of Miami?s best kept secrets. Thank you, Paul!

I had been wanting to re-do this small bathroom for a long time, but had not found a contractor who would do it for a reasonable price and in a short time frame.
I found Paul on Angie's list, called him and once I met him I knew he was someone I could trust with the work.
I was not wrong. Things went amazingly well (and not just because I have low expectations of most contractors in South Florida!) Paul is a hard worker with an artisan's eye for detail and pride in his work. His recommendations were always on target thereby avoiding expensive mistakes. If something didn't come out right, he did it over again on his own without charging extra. After tiling (bathroom or floor), he will replace tiles that don't blend in well without charge. He replaced one of them twice (with a smile.) He even moved the plumbing after the tile was done to make sure that the shower hose wouldn't get hung up on the shower control, again without charge. He is also a magician with doors, and fixed a botched Home Depot installation in about 10 minutes. I've never had a better experience with a contractor. Everything comes out great and no matter what you ask for, you'll get his standard response of "It's all good." Hire him if you can!

This was a major construction job not just a simple remodel due to the lowering of the kitchen floor and structure changes. As such, it took almost a year from beginning to end. Paul did his best to keep the remaining part of the house free from dust and debris during that time which we really appreciated. The job was permitted and there were delays in the beginning due to problems between the city and the drawings created by the structural engineer. Paul kept us fully informed. Once the plans were approved, Paul worked steadily to complete the project. He is a hard worker and often puts in extra time if things are falling behind. He is on the job himself and brings in a helper as needed. He is able to do most if not all construction tasks including welding, carpentry, tiling, electrical, drywall, and plumbing. And, he does them well. Paul cares about his work and takes the time to do it properly. He pays attention to the little things and has good suggestions for design and enhancements. He is smart, and understands quickly what is needed to create a better look. He has a sense of humour and is eternally optimistic which makes working with him pleasant. He does have a tendency to underestimate how long something might take but that can be accommodated. We are very happy with Paul's work and would definitely hire him again.

I thought Paul would be too busy to handle it but he wasn't. So I didn't bother going any further. He is fantastic and exceptionally bright. He is a great listener and tries to find out what exactly I am attempting to achieve. I enjoy working with him. He is the kind of person who reminds me of my stuff. He learns everything he can about the work he is going to do. When he is tiling my house he discusses things like how my home is, who some of the early tile users are and how things haven't changed in 2000 years. He is a delight to work with. The price was outstanding. I probably got that price because he has done other work for me. He told me not to tell my neighbors what I paid for the deck. I gave him the leisure to squeeze this job in between other small jobs. He is very fussy. We went to three lumber yards just to find the right wood. He didn't like the grain of the wood in the first two places we went. When he says he is going to be there, he will be there. He does have other jobs and I am not commanding but he might call and say he isn?t free for another week. I have to respect that. He won't leave a job until he is satisfied. There are other people who almost rush a job just to respond to the next one. He tends to start a little bit late in the morning because he and his wife take care of a medical store and share duties. If I should have other work done I will definitely consider him.
