It went pretty well. Overall the work looks good with the one issue being that in one spot the grout color blend with existing grout is not as good as Steve told us it would be. Positives: 1) Steve listens very well, is cooperative, responsive, flexible and knowledgeable in his craft. 2) He offered us several stone choices to replace the intercom and then he cut down the stone that we chose to fit into the wall. 3) He provided grout samples ahead of time. That said, in one spot near our front door where he grouted in a new stone the grout does not match as well as he said it would - so that is not as good as we had hoped. We wish the color was warmer to blend better with the old grout. 4) Overall the work is good. Obviously the test of stone work is how it lasts over time, so we don't know about long term durability right now. 5) Steve went above and beyond by agreeing to glue back in place a broken slat on a second story vinyl shutter - I appreciated that a lot because it looked bad and it was too high up for me to glue it. 6) Steve and his assistant cleaned up pretty well. Opportunities for improvement: 1) A better match on grout color. 2) Steve is super busy, our job was small so he had to squeeze it in. Steve had to reschedule the delivery of grout samples 3-4 times and reschedule the job 3-4 times.

Stephen was fairly easy to reach and responsive by phone and email. They arrived at 9:45a even though they had wanted to schedule for 7:30a and we agreed on 8:00am. I was their first job of the day. His workmen replaced the crown cement but did no repair to the rim of the crown until I inspected the work from the roof and sent him a picture. We agreed it was a misunderstanding. Separately I specified repairs to the cracked stucco near the ground., Stephen explained that we could have him attempt to paint over the cement but it would likely not match. I gave him the go ahead. He was correct that the match was bad. See image. I was able to fix it myself by buying the closest masonry paint at H Depot with a little extra color and black for tweeking, given on the side in small containers I brought. See other image

We live in a house built in 1927 and have three chimneys that needed repair and as they say in my world, "reconstructive surgery ". We were completely satisfied with the work that Steve and his crew performed to repair our old dilapidated chimneys and mortar. I was concerned that Steve would not be able to color match the mortar on the chimneys but he got it absolutely perfect. The crew was professional, tidy and hard-working. Rarely do you find such professionalism and craftsmanship in today's world. Although Steve is just a shade under 30 years old he is a skilled mature craftsmen and what a nice guy! I would recommend his services for anyone who needs chimney repair. His prices were more than reasonable compared to estimates that I received. This company gets a gold medal. Thank you Angie for recommending Steve Ewing to restore our old home!! Respectfully, Stu Gordon.

This job was handled extremely poorly with untrained masons. The work was beyond sloppy, concrete wasn't brushed, just sloppily troweled my stone was ruined with wet cement speared all over. There are now cracks in the fresh pointing. He did come back to acid wash some of the mess, but it looks like crap. STAY AWAY

I can't say enough good things about Steve and his crew. Once I scheduled the work to be done, Steve fit our job into his already tight schedule. They were there when he said they would be there and got right to work. They were very courteous as the repair was right near our walkway and were quick to move equipment to make sure that my wheelchair bound daughter could get by easily. The work was done over the course of two days and looks absolutely amazing!! I would highly recommend them to anyone needing masonry work completed.

I called Steve and he picked up right away. He stated he would be able to get to my house that afternoon around 4. He asked me to send him a text message with my info and address once we got off the phone. Right after we got off the phone I sent him a text and he said thank you and stated he would see me later. He arrived right on time and was very friendly and down to earth. He stated he would send me an email with the proposal that night or the next day. I did not receive the email within that time frame so i texted him and asked him if he sent it and he stated that he did that night he spoke with me. I checked my junk email and sure enough it was in there. MY FAULT NOT HIS.
After getting higher/unprofessional estimates from other contractors I chose Steve's company. He set a date for the work but unfortunately the weather did not cooperate but he texted me the night before and advised me that his next opening was a week later and i advised him that was OK. He showed up on time and performed a great job on my dilapidated steps. My front steps were in bad shape and he did a great job with what he had to work with. And let me add, I attempted to repair some bricks in the past which made his job a lot harder. Him and his guys did amazing work. Thanks Steve.
The only issue was they were so busy had to wait a little longer then I wanted to. Once they got on the job everything went well and I was satified with the job. Steve and his crew did a very good job it is an older house and they had to set up scaffold in a very tough area.

Everything went very well. Because of some weather that impacted one of their previous jobs, Steve let me know they need to push the start back two days, which worked out better so they could start on Monday with putting up scaffolding and complete by Friday and be cleaned up and all scaffolding and debris removed. Steve let me know of any complications or anomalies and how they would be handled. All work was completed in the time frame and for the cost in the proposal.

I would be happy to have him work here again - I was very satisfied.

The interior plaster wall that is against the back of the chimney has been absorbing moisture. It wasn't a leak, but it was enough moisture to slowly create a damp spot and crack the plaster. From old patches, we could tell that this had been a long-standing problem (the house was built in 1920). We have had a chimney liner put in, a new roof, and the chimney repointed from the roofline up. We thought the problem was solved and took the plaster out, down to the chimney wall and then replastered - but with no success. The damp slowly started appearing and spreading and then cracking (worse than before). We were extremely frustrated and tired of spending so much money on this problem and still with no success.

Bob came out for a estimate and was extremely helpful and informative. He did tell us that we were going to have wait for a season before replastering the wall, but once done, we shouldn't have to do it again. Bob's plan was to repoint the chimney from the roofline down, and replace the flashing on the roof around the chimney (the North Jersey way). He also said he would replace the stucco on the exterior wall where it looked like we had the moisture problem on the outside, seal the entire chimney and our brick steps at the front entryway (the steps were just a nice extra).

We had also requested an estimate from the gentleman that repointed the chimney from the roof line up (he wanted just under $6,000 to do the roof down and replace the flashing around the chimney).

Bob did everything but the stucco repair (it was not needed - it was just the paint flaking, not the stucco). The job was done well (in 2 days). They kept the area as clean as possible (difficult to do when grinding out the old mortar). The job looks nice, and I keep feeling the interior wall (we have had lots of rain), but I think we are good - no moisture. I am thrilled that this ugly problem is no longer looming over us.

I would definitely use Bob again.

I had Ewing & Sons come out to give an estimate on what I thought was going to be a huge job. He took a look and said he didn't feel it was obvious that a rebuild was in need. He recommended doing a small repair and seeing what happened over the next 6-12 months. If in the future the big repair needs to be done, what is $225 added to over $10,000? Nothing. And if it turns out that in 6-12 months there is not indication the big repair is needed? I saved thousands of dollars thanks to him!

Stephen was very professional and offered all options available, including what is not necessary to spend money on. It was a one day job and if you hadn't seen the team working, you would have never known they were there. Everything was cleaned up and the chimney looked fantastic. The job they performed was:

? remove any loose stucco/debris

* install stucco a wire (wire, corner beed, stop need)

? apply masonry base coat

? scratch base coat

? apply stucco ( base coat )

? apply feather finish

* all material included in price

My only less than perfect rating was for responsiveness. I think it was an extremely busy time for them, and some of the responses were not within 24 hours. So follow up might be necessary, but certainly worth it.

Great! Very professional work. Met with contractor prior to work and the details of the job were clearly explained. The price was reasonable and competitive. The work was done on time, on budget and according to specifications. The team was responsive to our needs and maintained a professional attitude throughout the work. The chimneys look beautiful. We would definitely have them back for future work.
From my first conversation with Stephen regarding providing an estimate to the completion of the job, the experience has been excellent. Stephen was able to come out the day I first spoke to him to review the job and discuss our expectations. He clearly communicated what he thought was necessary and what work could wait until our budget allowed. He provided a detailed estimate with a complete breakdown of every aspect of the work and allowed us to choose what we wanted done.
During the project, it was discovered the chimney was in worse shape than initially thought. Stephen showed us exactly what was wrong and gave us the option to proceed as originally agreed or rebuild the chimney and the flue. We opted to spend a bit more money to rebuild the chimney and flue to have the job done the best way possible.
Throughout the job, Stephen and his crew arrived on time and worked diligently. They kept the job site clean and free of debris. Upon arrival each day of the four day project, Stephen would review with me or my wife the day's expectations. As they were leaving for the day, Stephen would review what was accomplished and ensure we were satisfied with the progress and quality of the work.
The work is top notch down to the smallest detail.
We have more masonry work to be completed and will definitely use Ewing & Son Construction again!
Stephen Ewing was great to work with! He went out of his way to answer all my questions and concerns. He performed the work as promised and checked in with me throughout the process to make sure my expectations were being met. He is a genuine business person and an honest contractor. I would most definitely hire him again and recommend him to anyone.
Steve and his team did an amazing job. He was able to fit my tight timeline into his schedule in just under 2 weeks - and upon completion of the job, sent me full pictures of his work as we're now living 2800 miles away.
He was able to take a huge chunk of stress away from us - and also did so at a great price.
