About us

We were established in 2006 through a lot of sweat, tears and 80-hour work weeks, like most small businesses. I left my cushy upper management job in corporate to take over the great business my wife had started. She had decided to make our home a happier place by learning to paint faux finishes through our home like marbled ceilings and a brick painted patio. Then the neighbors wanted them, their friends and so forth. The name "Express Yourself Paint" came from customer's expressing their unique character through faux finishes. We started out in an eight-foot utility trailer with the forty-foot ladders hanging out to infinity with red flags tied to them and a used spray gun. We looked more like the Red Neck Painters of Raleigh. Thanks to all those trusting souls who allowed us to paint for them in those early days! We came from humble beginnings, but we wanted to create a different kind of painting company. A company that is high performance, uses modern technology for communicating and scheduling making for a more satisfied customer experience while still applying paint the old fashion way...brushes, rollers and sprayers. Our desire to be different has resulted in us becoming the largest and most successful repaint company in the Triangle. All that said, we still trip over our own feet sometimes and as of yet have not discovered how to be perfect. Give us a try and we will most definitely put our best foot forward for you. We can't leave the light on for you because we are at your home painting, but we will definitely bring all the paint and the fixings. Our sincere wish for you is to experience, "The Power of Paint!"

Estimate appointment was prompt and thorough. We were provided with an estimate right on the spot and it was extremely reasonable. Work was scheduled in a timely manner and completed on schedule. My cupboards and walls look great and we are very happy with the results.

Highly recommend EYP for your painting needs. Pricing was great compared to other quotes I received for removing popcorn ceiling and painting the interior. The work was scheduled quickly and I was amazed at how efficient the team was in completing a large project like this in 5 days.

We had Bobby come and paint our wrought iron railings and our outdoor decks. He was meticulous and very hard working. Bobby did a great job painting and then, when he was done, he walked around the area and let us point to spots we would like to have re-touched. He was also very polite and kind. I will personally ask for "Bobby" for future painting jobs.

Very polite, very professional and very clean when they left. These guys did a great job and fixing up our garage after 25 years of needing paint and repair. And redid and painted two ceiling ceilings inside. Highly recommend these guys and I will definitely use them again.

Donte did a good job power washing for us in the spring, so we tried to hire them to paint for us. They are having some serious issues right now. Their phone number reroutes to a woman who has nothing to do with the company, but says she is getting calls for them all the time. Trying a different extension got me the owner's son, who is also not affiliated with the business. No response via email or Instagram. Not really sure how else to reach them. I paid upfront for a painter, got a confirmation email thanking me for scheduling a power wash, and have spent the last two hours trying to reach anyone who is in any way affiliated with this company. Looks like I will need to dispute the charge with my bank, and hire a different painter. Update: I finally got Jason on the phone. He was very condescending to me, and claimed that they had been trying to email me. My husband was sitting beside me, and said he would not be able to keep his job if he spoke over people like that. I do not have any emails from them in my inbox, spam, or trash folders. I've been on the computer all morning, dealing with a flooring company and a lender, so I would have seen any emails that came in. He expected me to remove my negative review, when everything I have stated is factually correct (and I can prove it!). I was at 3 stars, but am marking this down to 1. The lack of professionalism is impressive! So impressive, in fact, I think I will share my review elsewhere as well. On Yelp, they have a very negative rating, with people calling out specific people at this company by name, including Jason. Do not hire them!

Looked great and team was very friendly and were good workers. However, deck stain lasted less than 2 years before needing a refresh of the paint job.
Response from Express Yourself Paint
"We are disappointed that your are dissatisfied. From the time we completed your project until the date of this review was 32 months. Factors That Affect the Life Span of Your Stain 1. Newly pressure treated wood is full of preservatives and stains are not able to fully penetrate the wood pores. 2. The fibers on older aged wood become weaker over time and wears away taking the stain with the loose fibers. 3. Decks in heavy sun will fade and become sun damaged quicker than a deck in the shade. Shaded decks tend to mildew, also negatively affecting the life of the stain. 4. Heavy foot and pet traffic creates friction that wears away the stain and wood fibers decreasing the life of the stain. 5. Excessive water from a roof valley that overflows onto the deck with each rain, for example, will have negative affect on the life of the stain. The life span of a stained deck will vary widely based on the number and severity of the factors listed. In severe cases, re-staining may be needed yearly while the ideal deck conditions may last 5 years. Because a deck often has several of the negative factors above, they tend to be the most problematic structures to coat. We highly recommend solid stains as they protect your wood from elements such as sun and water much better than clear sealers. They are also much easier and cost-effective to maintain or refresh as stated in your comments. On average a solid stain will need to be applied at least on the horizontals every 2-4 years."

Came when they said they would. Discussed everything that was to be done. Did an excellent job and the price was good enough that I added a few extra areas on that I'd not planned to have power washed this year.

I was in need of immediate painting for a new office I was moving into. The Express team not only responded quickly to my request on Angi but came out the very next day to give me an estimate and then began the work within a couple of days! Painting was well done and my office respected—cleaned up as if they’d never been there. Highly recommend Express Yourself Paint.

I am not gonna be hiring him again. I don't know if I used Angi. This really made me upset and the pro was asking me money that was to over pricing than what he gave me during the estimation.

"Hi [Member Name Removed] I went back and reviewed the quote which was 10% less then industry standard. And with the additional work you requested it did raise the initial estimate to accommodate your project. I hope that you were able to get your home project taken care. Best regards."

Not well...the company did not complete or perform work stated in contract. They were to spend time properly prepping exterior ,such as calking all cracks and gaps ,scraping ,sanding and removal of loose paint . I explained to salesman from company that I had trouble with previous painters not doing what they were supposed to in order to do a proper job and that I needed a thorough prep before paint . He assured me I would get that and to let crew know apon arrival. They immediately started covering and painting ,I questioned them about loose paint and calking ,they said they would take care of it . They literally painted over loose paint and wet rotting wood ,according to sales rep ,the painters were to properly evaluate issues such as damaged wood and give me options to repair at additional cost ofcoarse...they did not because they were in such a hurry. I contacted owner of issues ,he agreed via photos that work wasn't finished like painter told him and me it was ,he had them come back following morning and they were here about 5 miniuts and said they would be back following Monday...they never showed ...the owner said they met obligation ...they didn't paint tops of window trims ,they didn't, scrape or prep or prime bear wood as stated in contract, resulting in peeling paint .my windows looked just as bad re painted as they did before they painted. I've attempted to get in touch with them meny times to get it resolved even warenty work they are refusing to make good on ,paint job is only days old .$6k later I found myself going around doing the prep and rework because they refuse to return my call ,answer my texts ,or emails ...they did not properly complete or guarantee my job . Several joints left uncalked aswell. Most people don't know what to look for..I was up on a ladder fixing my gutters and leaders and noticed unfinished work ,I figured they missed a couple spots ,ill take care of it ..then it literally turned out to be much of the house including spots I could see via top of ladder but out of my reach to attempt to finish ...peeling paint after a acouple days is warenty guarantee work, they mention on their web sight they guarantee and warenty workmanship...they are refusing to honor that on my job even though I sent meny photos ...and they agreed to send someone but they don't answer calls or return them ...the salesman would sporadically but customer service person and scheduler would not ...the salesman, the carpenter ,the powerwasher were excellent but the painting crew took short cuts and lied to me about work being complete. The owner is responsible for the workmanship of the sub contractors he hires ,I just v wanted them to take care of it but lack of communication from them insinuates the company doesn't care ,they got my final payment, which I was reluctant to pay til I was assured all work was completed . The painter assured me it was but evidently it wasn't and still isnt.

"Mr. [Member Name Removed], You signed off on your job completion after we completed your final scheduled touch up on 7/15 stating the following: "I have reviewed my project with the technician(s) and have found the work and cleanliness to be acceptable and complete." I personally visited your job site on 7/15 and your paint job looked great and at the time you were in agreement. Even after you signed off and had paid in full we still sent the techs out to make an additional touch up at your request free of charge (per the contract is a $99 fee). Unfortunately, when the techs arrived for the additional touch up on Saturday 7/16 you had scrapped the paint off your window trim down to the bare wood and communicated they would need to repair that as well. I did in fact tell the techs not to address these areas you damaged. I did also instruct the people in my organization to block your calls. Why? Because you called over 200 times, even called people unassociated with your project multiple times. You also called the techs and threatened to turn them in for being illegal (although the person you were making threats to is actually a citizen and pregnant). Our business with you has concluded. We have you marked in our system as "Do not do business with this client". We wish you well in your future endeavors. David Roberts, President"

Straightforward process where the explained what would be needed to strip the veneer off the original cabinets. Followed up after work was done to make sure everything was done to our satisfaction, which included some touch-up work at no additional charge.
