I felt comfortable with all the people around, and they did very good prep work also. I was very pleased with the outcome.

We had our home painted by Tom Sternod with 5 Star Painting. What a huge mistake that turned out to be. Our previous 3 paint jobs lasted around 9 years each. Mr. Sternod assured me that his paint job would last longer than that. Turns out, that was a lie. The 5 Star paint job lasted a little over 3 years, as the paint started to crack, peel, curl up, and literally fall off our home. It was especially bad in the areas that got direct sunlight. I asked Mr. Sternod why this was happening, and he refused to answer me. I asked a guy named Mike McCarthy, who said he was a general manager with 5 Star Painting, the same question. He also refused to answer me. Finally, I was able to talk to a guy who had only been with 5 Star Painting a short time. He told me the paint job Mr. Sternod and his crew had done on our home was one of the worst paint jobs he would seen in 30 years of painting. He confirmed what we had all suspected. He said they completely skipped the primer coat altogether, and he seriously doubted they even did the required proper pre-painting prep work, i.e., sanding, cleaning, pressure washing, etc. Mr. Sternod either had the painters skip the entire pre-paint process to save him labor costs, or he failed to adequately supervise them to ensure the paint job was done correctly. They also slopped paint on our aggregate walkway and deck, and they paint sealed 7 windows shut. We have serious doubts regarding the business ethics and integrity of Tom Sternod and 5 Star Painting. Do not make the same mistake we made, as there are too many high quality, professional, honest home painting companies in the Greater Puget Sound area to choose from. If you do make the mistake of going with this outfit, start saving your money now for the next paint job, which will come far sooner rather than later. We also suspect they do a good share of their hiring from the Home Depot parking lots, as these people are complete amateurs, and really bad at what they do.

"Mr. Smith was more than a challenge to deal with unfortunately. We painted his home over 4 years ago and he contacted us a few months ago with some minor issues. Even though we offer a 2 year warranty, we decided to see if we could help him out with his issues at no cost to him. It was immediately apparent that Mr. Smith did not do any annual maintenance on his newly painted house like we told him he needed to do to ensure the longevity of the paint job (pressure washing in the spring, routine inspections, etc.) We did what we could for him but he ended up essentially telling us to repaint his entire home. Reminder, our warranty is 2 years an"

I would never hire them again. They got paint ion my window shades and attempted to clean them but it was never full cleaned. They got paint on the door hardware and didnâ t clean them. They got paint on my wood floors. They forgot to paint one area. The only positive is the painters arrived on time and were pleasant to be around.

I will start by saying it is rare that I leave a negative review, but here we go. I had done business before with Five Star Painting of Federal Way. Everything about that experience, from the scheduling to the completion of the work, was top-notch. That was why I called Five Stars to do some finish carpentry work (one of their listed services) at our new house. Unfortunately, we are now in the service area for the Bellevue franchise. When I first called to schedule an estimate, the woman on the phone said their estimators are booked solid for the next month with no availability. I was unable to even schedule an estimate. That seemed very odd to me, but whatever. Then she called back a while later and said an estimator could come to my house the next day, so we set that up. The next day the estimator showed up at the scheduled time. However, he kept thinking he was there to look at exterior paint, even though I was clear with the woman on the phone that I wanted crown molding and window casings installed. Then the estimator tells me he has not really the carpentry guy, but he can still do an estimate. He takes measurements, takes pictures, makes notes, etc. and says he will have a quote for me later the same day. This was on a Friday. By the following Tuesday, I still had not heard anything. I called the estimator and he said *oh yeah, I emailed that to you, check your spam folder. I can send it again in a few minutes*. It was not in my spam folder. Then a little bit later I get a text from him that he forwarded his notes from my job to their carpenter and that I would hear from him tomorrow (Wednesday). So at this point, it was obvious that this estimator had not done anything. By Friday, I still had not heard anything. I texted the estimator again telling him I had not heard anything. He responds and says their carpenter will get in touch with me today. A few hours later their carpenter calls me and says he has to come to my house again to do *another* estimate. He comes the same day and I show him the crown molding and window casings I want to be installed. He says he will have a quote for me on Monday. I also find out from the carpenter that he is a subcontractor *handyman*, he is not even a Five Star employee. This is especially interesting to me because I saw in a reply by Five Star Painting of Bellevue to another review that they do not have subcontractors do their work. Clearly, this is a lie. Monday comes around and the handyman sends me a quote from his business, not from Five Star. The quote is only for the crown molding (not window casings) and states to pay by check to him personally, not to his business or to Five Star Painting. I will not be doing any business with this company. Their communication and organization have been abysmal from the start. I would not trust them for a second with my money or to do the correct work at my house.
Response from Five Star Painting of Bellevue
"Hi Nick, We were able to figure out what happened in your situation. We do not actually install millwork (crown molding, baseboards, etc.). Whenever we get a customer who wants work to be done that we do not do, we have a network of other licensed, bonded and insured professionals that we refer them to. The specific contractor we referred you to (Rafael) is not actually a "handyman" but is a general contractor and actually does full remodel work. We would NEVER subcontract anyone for work that we do not do ourselves, we will simply refer you to someone like Rafael who we know will do great work and is trustworthy. We're very sorry for the confusion on this matter. We have reviewed this with our office staff and have better trained them on communicating our services better to our customers. Thank you for your bringing this situation to our attention Nick."

This **company** is essentially a franchise sales office that hired subcontractors to perform the work using a fixed price, leading to numerous issues. In the end, the job was completed, but it was painful.
Response from Five Star Painting of Bellevue
"Hi Eric, thank you for your review. We are NOT a "sales office". We have employees who have worked for us for many years and do NOT subcontractor our work out. The owner of our company has been in the industry for over 35 years and we have been in business in the Puget Sound area for 10 years. We believe we went above and beyond for you during your project. We did many items for free that was not on the contract such as go to home depot to purchase bird wire when the contract specifically said you would supply it, we installed it at zero cost to you, we removed, painted and installed where the bird wire was located which was not included in the contract. Sometimes no good deed goes unpunished, unfortunately. We do thank you for your business and for the review."

Interior doors did not close and scraped floor. Cheap paint was used and spots were missed all around trim. Wall patching left rough spots. Foreman was rude on phone and then escalated to some dude, Mike, who refused to get on phone and insisted on only communicating by email which added time, frustrated, hassle, and prevented resolution of my issues. Despite not completing job to satisfaction yet, they threatened to put construction lien on property if not paid immediately. Very negative experience. I lost my temper with this company after they started treated me like a second class customer. The name of this company, Five Star Painting, is definitely inaccurate!
Response from Five Star Painting of Bellevue
"UPDATE 11-16-20: Ryan FINALLY paid his bill after placing a lien on this property. Ryan booked us through Home Advisor based on our reviews and because we were cheaper than another painting company. We completed our contractual agreement with Ryan, but it wasn't until we tried to schedule the final inspection and collect the final payment that Ryan disputed the contract. Ryan demanded that we do additional work for free (including pulling weeds from his yard). We ended our working relationship with Ryan due to his foulness, immaturity, and his attempt to bully and extort us. Because we would not comply with Ryan's demands he then ordered us off his property stating that if we returned he would consider it "criminal trespass". Ryan was provided a very detailed bid that outlined the scope of work that included what work was going to be done and what work was specifically NOT going to be done. After the work was completed as contracted we reached out to Ryan to schedule the walk through with him or his real estate agent to ensure everything was taken care and address any touch up's or concerns if needed. Ryan inquired why the additional work (he assumed we would do) was not done. I don't know if Ryan confused our scope of work with the bid provided by the other painting company, but it seems so. We reiterated his scope of work that he agreed to. Ryan admitted to not reading his contract prior to agreeing to us to start the work. It was explained that he is responsible to read his contract and ask questions, but he chose not to. We offered to do the additional work for an additional cost. He was trying to insist that we do the work for free, then he tried to negotiate a ridiculous cost that he thinks was fair. Ryan put in an email to us that if we did not do the additional work on his terms that he was going to post a bad review. That's Extortion! Ryan wanted us to coordinate additional services for him, such as a house cleaning service and a gardener to mow his lawn, but expected that we - A painting company, pull weeds from the grounds? We did hire a gardener to mow the 2 (Foot) tall grass, but at no time prior did Ryan ask that the gardener pull the weeds, as obviously that would have been an additional cost, so maybe that was why Ryan Assumed that pulling weeds is something that a painting company would do. We did refuse to provide Ryan our cleaning services as the owner did not want to subject them to Ryan's abuse. Ryan has not once taken accountability for not reading his contract before agreeing to our services. Trying to resolve his claim by phone was pointless as Ryan had no intention of taking any responsibility and continued to be vile. By this point Ryan's vicious rage towards our team was completely unacceptable and was clear that Ryan can not control his temper. Ryan refused to pay and said he was going to bring in another company. Shortly after, Ryan then reached back out to us with an apology, he justified his poor behavior because he was responding to the Managers "passive aggressive abuse" but he did make a promise that if we would take his call that he would not be rude. The owner of Five Star Painting insisted that no more phone calls would be held with Ryan and that she will deal with Ryan by email only so that everyone involved is accountable. Understanding that Ryan was trying to prepare the home for sale, the owner of Five Star Painting reconsidered and she offered to Ryan that we would return to the property on the condition that; Ryan provide a letter of authorization that allows our team back on the property, that Ryan be respectful and cooperative with the new project manager, and that Ryan provide a list and (ideally) photos of the items he claimed needed touch up's. In addition it was made clear to him that we would only address issues that were on the original scope of work."

we hired 5 Star Painting to apply stain to the exterior of our condo building and paint trim. They were courteous and very professional. The crew displayed an exceptional level of skill, professionalism and the ability to breakdown the project into manageable elements and finish the job in a seamless manner. We would hire them again.

I was very impressed with Tom on the initial contact. The set of painters that came to the house were excellent. Covered all the surfaces, matched the stain well and cleaned up after. Very friendly. When it came time to reinstall the doors there was a hiccup with the hinges. Then during installation one of the hinges was faulty...Thankfully the installer did have an extra with him. The doors that were stained are more white than my original stain. And I notice afterward the top of one of the doors wasn't covered properly with the stain.

I was very impressed from initial contact (Tom) to completion. Price and terms were reasonable, and the quality of the work was excellent. I especially loved the professional, detailed work order provided in advance, and the crew (Leo and team) who did the work experienced professionals, on time, friendly, flexible, and thorough cleanup. Highly recommend.

Last summer (2018) I had them paint a 950 sq ft condo in Issaquah Washington. They were pretty responsive with inquiries and questions. It might have taken me a couple of calls to reach them, but I was mostly able to get updates once the work started. The quality of the work was excellent. If you have one of those non-professional friends or relatives who offers paint your home for cheap - don't let them - hire a pro. I'm glad I used Five Star - I'd say it was about the best service and quality one could expect. Of course I wish I could have paid a little less for the job, but hey, nobody ever wants to part with their money....LOL. In seriousness, I guess I feel the price was totally fair for the quality of work they did and the level of service they provided. I recommend them for sure! - Aubrey W
