The first day of work, which I believe was mid November 2015, a man by the name of Kevin Pereira who is the warranty and maintenance manager, as stated on his business card, showed up at our house. He applied a layer of silicone and painted the small damaged spot on the interior surface of the ceiling. The work was done in one day, the day went just fine and Mr.Pereira left after he finished his work. We were happy as we thought this would be the end of it and that there would be no more problems with the roof. Unfortunately with the first rain we saw the leak again, at that point the company had been paid in full. I notified the receptionist Ms.Raquel Freed of the problem. She said that she would send Kevin to make another assessment. And that was when the real incompetence of the company started to reveal itself.
Of course once the payment was made in full, the company owner and manager had little reason to return to our house and make a serious attempt to find the leak and fix the problem promptly. At this point, we were no longer a priority. When I contacted Raquel and explained to her that the problem had not been solved, she said that for the time being they could only have a tarp put in place to prevent further damage until they could make time for us as their workers were busy with other projects. After several days of waiting finally Kevin Pereira arrived, he placed a tarp on a portion of the roof. He seemed very bothered by the fact that he had to return to the site. We were hardly amazed when we realized that the tarp wasn't securely positioned in place and as a result of windy weather, it got blown off and the vulnerable portion of the roof was completely exposed to the rain again.
I notified Raquel of what had happened to the tarp and asked her to send a senior and more experienced worker to our house to finish the job. This time around it was Mauricio, a presumably more experienced worker who came. After making us wait a couple of weeks, on his first stop all he did was place another tarp and secure it in place. They were planning to apply silicone to a couple of spots they thought the leak was coming from. We were required to wait until they were free and the weather was warm. Well what could we do but to wait and cooperate. On the day Mauricio was supposed to come for a second time to do spot treatment with silicone, we waited for an hour after the scheduled time, but he didn't show up. I called Raquel and she had no idea what had happened. She finally found out that according to Mauricio there was an emergency and he couldn't come that day. Of course in this age of digital glory, he must have had a very difficult time using his cell phone to make a call to his office to notify them of his emergency !!!
Finally Mauricio graced us with his presence, and he didn't hesitate to tell us that he didn't want to be here, he was extremely resistant to any suggestions regarding application of silicone to vulnerable spots. He was very uncooperative and sadly I could see how he enjoyed seeing us worry about this ongoing problem. After an hour he left and we were left wondering if this could possibly be the final fix.
But no it was not! The roof leaked again with the next slightest drizzle that lasted only a couple of hours. Again I had to notify Raqeul. At this point, it was Mr.Don Freed who entered the arena. He is the General manager of the company. He showed up at our house to assess the problem himself, he was grinning from ear to ear and appeared to be very concerned. He said that he and his family have been in this business for generations. We became hopeful again, thinking they cared enough to have the general manager come out and that this time we could expect that the problem would get proper attention. He and I went up to the roof for him to inspect the work. He finally admitted that the leak could be from an area slightly further up the roof where it is covered with shingles and that water could be entering the roof from an area further up, find its way down and leak through an opening where it becomes a visible leak. He said he needed to perform a "water test" to make sure that the leak was not coming from the area they had covered with silicone. He also admitted that Kevin Pereira had failed us. As I understood it, he meant that the water test should have been the first step in this process. I thought to myself, Kevin Meyer the owner/operator, who claimed to have had 25 years of experience failed us as well, but I kept my mouth shut and thanked Mr.Freed for coming by. Before he left I asked him what would happen if the leak was not coming from the area they had covered with silicone and from an area further up. He said that we would have to to cover that area with new shingles as ours were old and worn out. He did mention that he would charge us an extra $450 for the job and that we had already received good service and a lot of labor. He was referring to the work done by Kevin Pereira. I didn't argue with him as I wanted them to have the chance to make a proper assessment and find the source of the leak, something that they should have done from the very beginning. On another day Mr.Freed and Mauricio came out to perform the water test. They placed sprinklers up on the roof where they had applied the silicone layer and had water running in large amounts for over two hours. At first we didn't realize they were going to run the water for such an extended period of time, after all we are in a serious drought!! It started to worry us but what choice did we have, we were at their mercy. The water test was done and there was no leak through out that whole time. It was clear that the application of the silicone layer was completely unnecessary from the beginning, the source of the leak was not from that area at all. But this was not enough for Mr.Freed to see the obvious and reach the logical conclusion I just shared with you. He decided to once again apply the tarp to the area that they had covered with silicone and wait for the next rain. Again we agreed and went along with his plan, but at this point it was becoming obvious to us that he was just buying time and had no real intention of resolving the problem. So weeks went by until the heavy rain arrived and sure enough we had a very substantial leak all day long which resulted in even more damage to our ceiling. I notified Mr.Freed the next day, he said he would send Kevin Pereira to inspect the tarp and make sure it hadn't been displaced during the rain. Mr. Pereira came out and determined that the tarp had not moved. Well it was finally time for the company to stop playing and fix the problem. After few weeks of waiting, Mr. Freed showed up to discuss the plan, at least that is what we thought, but to our surprise his plan was that we needed a new roof. I reminded him of what he had said about fixing the shingles, he said he wasn't interested in piecemeal work. He said that for the $900 we paid him he had delivered a lot of labor. I used an analogy to help him understand our point of view. I said suppose he goes to his doctor with abdominal pain, after his doctor examines him he decides Mr Freed has appendicitis and performs surgery on him. Mr.Freed pays for the surgery and other hospital services and goes home, but after sometime the same pain comes back and this time around the doctor decides to do what he was supposed to have done from the very beginning which is to perform a reliable imaging study. And the study reveals that in fact the gall stones in his gallbladder are the source of his pain and he needs to have another surgery. I asked Mr.Freed if he felt that in a situation like this it would be reasonable to expect him to pay several thousand dollars in hospital fees for a second time? I wanted to help him understand how unreasonable he was being. He asked me if I was an Attorney, and I said I was an advanced practice nurse. He said that there was no malpractice insurance in his profession. I replied that it was not a matter of malpractice insurance, the point I was making had to do wit
