We have used Freestate to periodically trim our trees and always found Ben (owner) to be professional and more than fair in his pricing. When the heavy winds came through Friday a large tree split and a huge brach (more like a small tree - see photo) crashed down on our neighbor's roof, puncturing it. Our neighbor didn't know who to call so I called Ben. He happened to be in our neighborhood dealing with another downed tree and said he'd come over that night; and he did. The crew off-loaded some heavy machinery and promised to be back in the morning. Promise kept. By end of that day (Saturday) the branch was off the roof, the the split tree (a 70 footer) was down and the crew temporarily patched the neighbor's roof. While they were here I asked Ben to take down two other white pines that are notorious for shallow roots and fragile limbs. He did so at a great price. The neighbors and I are extremely satisfied. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

I have used Freestate Tree Service before, as they always do a great job. This experience was not different. I had to have a dying Tree of Heaven (Ailanthus altissima) removed, approximately 30 feet tall. They promptly responded to my initial e-mail to have them come out and check to see if the tree was able to be saved (it wasn't, which was no surprise) and e-mailed an estimate the next day. The other two companies (one wasn't able to get someone out to look at the tree until 2 weeks from my e-mail) and the one that did stop by gave an over-the-phone quote that was significantly higher. The Freestate guys showed up bright and early to start cutting away at the tree. They always seem to do quite a lot of work in a rather short amount of time. By the afternoon the tree was gone and they were cleaning up.

This is the third time in the last 7 years that I have hired Ben Jones to remove trees. His work has consistently been outstanding and his prices are very competitive. There are no hidden charges. He shows up when he promises to and he gets the work done quickly. He always cleans up afterwards. I would hire him again if I ever need further work.

Free State visited the property ahead of time to determine the extent of work. By email we determined the scope of work which expanded to cover some additional tree trimming of 4 smaller trees on the property. We are satisfied with the completed project.

All three projects went well. Professionally done. Pleasant surprise to find out that Ben did both tree work and metal work.

Poor! left all of the branches on my property. I tried to resolve the problem with BBB but FreeState sent a ficticious contract to BBB without signatures. I sent an e-mail to Freestate expressing my worry that the branches could block the stream at the bridge causing the water to divert onto the road. Our road was damaged last week because the branches blocked the stream.
Response from Freestate Tree Service LLC
"We were out on his property to log timber and split the proceeds from selling the logs. We were to leave everything in the woods that wasn't taken to the [Member Information Removed] for sale. This wasn't an average residential job. This was a logging job, nothing fictitious about the contract. The homeowner wasn't expecting such a large change in his wooded area. If he wanted it cleaned up, that is a service which needs paid for, it's not included in log sales."

Worse possible experience. These people were not honorable enough to return our phone calls, do an assessment, or call us about a deal we bought with them. After we looked into it, they told Angie's List that they would call us, and they never did. We got a refund and are very unhappy.

Responsive, friendly, knowledgeable. The entire Freestate team was superb, professional, courteous (gave us a "heads up " when he was on his way). Safe, extraordinarily skilled. Took his time to do the job perfectly.

We contracted Ben, the owner of Freestate Tree Service to remove the Silver Maple in our front yard. We used Ben because he did a fine job for us two years ago after we selected his company based on Angie's List reviews.

The job included tree removal, stump grinding, complete chip/grindings removal, topsoil seed & straw for $1,600. The tree cutting took place in late December, 2015. I paid Ben in full (which included $150 for stump grinding and removal). This was indeed a mistake on my part thinking that he would honorably finish the job! The grinding was subcontracted and took place a couple weeks after that. As an additional service, I contracted with Ben to also split the wood for firewood (which he insisted be a separate cash only service). Even though the yard was basically trashed while he and his crew split the wood, I paid him the agreed amount of $200 for the splitting and even gave him a $50 tip! That same day, I was told by and understood that Freestate would not be responsible for the lawn damage caused from the splitting machines as this was not part of our original contract. I still wanted the grindings removed as originally contracted and paid for. Several weeks of bad weather justifiably prevented him from returning to remove the grindings. We also understood his reasons for additional delays because he was undergoing equipment maintenance. After multiple attempts to schedule with him, he simply returned unexpectedly to my house one day in April and managed to only rake all the grindings back into the stump hole. Not only did he not remove all the grindings, his equipment trashed my yard even more than than he did before! Then he emailed me that this was my fault as, what he called me, a "misinformed homeowner" for making him come out when we did rather than wait for "the ground to freeze"?! At this point, it will cost me hundreds of $$ to rent the equipment rental needed to remove the grindings that i paid Freestate to remove and repair the damages I was left with. Not to mention that he was paid for a service he didn't provide to satisfaction. He has been ignoring the multiple emails and phone calls from both me and my wife to rectify or remedy this situation.

if you're looking for simple tree cutting, Ben's your guy. If you want them to follow through with a complete job - forget Freestate and go with somebody else. Such a shame, we wanted this to end well. Live and learn.

Ben and his crew were on time (7:30AM). They worked quickly and the trees were pretty much down by noon. I was concerned that the bucket truck and other vehicles would damage the lawn but for they were careful and the lawn held up pretty well. I thought everyone from Freestate were very professional.
I chose Freesate because Ben, the owner, was actually the one who perfromed the work. Having the owner involved meant something to me
Once we decided to take our tree down, I contacted a number of tree services to remove it. Ben from Freestate came out within a couple days and emailed me a very detailed estimate (he was delayed in coming out to do the estimate because of an emergency job, but he emailed me to tell me he would be out first thing the next day). The estimate Ben provided was for the tree removal and the trimming of four other trees, and the price he quoted was the 8-hour Angie's List deal. The price was competitive, and he was able to provide me with evidence of their insurance. We originally scheduled for the 31st of July, but his job on the 30th ran long because of thunderstorms that moved through the area, so instead he said he'd come out on Saturday, August 1. He emailed around 8am on Saturday and said he was packing up his gear and they'd arrive by 9. They showed up at 8:45, came to the door to introduce themselves and got straight to work. They did a fantastic job. The job was bigger than I think anyone realized, so it took longer than 8 hours, but they stayed and worked until it was done. They were professional and courteous (moved out humming bird feeder out of the way so it wouldn't get damaged, even though it was a $10 feeder and I don't really care about it). They knocked on the door a couple times to ask question, like to make sure a tree they were about to trim was actually on our property. They swept up all the tree trimmings and saw dust from the sidewalk and road in front of our house before they left. We are very happy with their service and I expect we will use them again if we need more tree service.

Having used Freestate before they were at the top of our list when it came to having the last two trees in our backyard removed. We used their services a couple of years ago to have a branch removed from one of those same trees, and they did a great job. at the time we asked them for an estimate for having the trees removed and the stumps ground. The estimate was fair, and included all of the costs of the removal and grinding.

Fast forward to 2015 and they were quick to respond to our request as to whether or not the estimate they provided was still workable. Their estimate was still one of the best, not too low and not too high, right in the middle where you would expect an honest and professional business to be.

After e-mailing them they went out and checked the trees, and said that the estimate was still good to go. So we hired them to come out and get to cutting. Of course the weather did not want to cooperate, and they had to reschedule, not a problem as safety is always paramount.

When the weather finally settled down they called and e-mailed saying that they would be out on the 10th of July. Of course, we couldn't take off of work, but that wasn't a problem. They came out and were at it bright and early according to our next door neighbors, and they worked with the utmost care in taking those trees down. Two 50 to 60 foot silver maples ... they used a crane, and we were told that they took out quite a few truck loads. When we arrived home they were still working on the final section of the trunk, and were still able to answer my questions while continuing to work.

They came by a few days later to grind down the stumps, which also went very well.

The best part is that they were very accommodating to my request to leave two 4 foot sections of the trunk behind so that I could make a few table tops. They left me an excellent section where the trunk split into two smaller trunks with a third trunk also forming.

They came out and gave me a quote. I live in three acres of woods. There were three trees that I wanted to get an estimate on. One of them was important, large, and had a possibility of hitting the house. I had three companies in total provide me with an estimate and they all had said the position of the tree on the hill was too dangerous for them to take down. They did follow up with a written estimate, but I have not gone forward with that work. I have previously used them for other tree service. They previously completed a large job of cutting up all the brush around my home. They are absolutely wonderful in cleaning up woods from right around the house. They have exceeded my expectations and did a wonderful job. They are the company I go to first for any tree service needs.
