This was a major remodel of numerous areas – master bath, upstairs jack and Jill bath, and two bedrooms that were badly in need of repair. The project took approximately two months once the work began. It included demolition, foundation work, installation of cabinets, plumbing, wiring, painting, flooring and more. The master bath redesign called for a relocation of the shower that involved the removal of a possible load bearing wall and re-engineering of the plumbing. Gary has a great understanding of all areas of construction and is able to discuss all facets of the work in detail. He made multiple visits ahead of time to discuss various approaches and to deliver accurate estimates. The project was challenging regarding logistics, time-line, and securing of material. The numerous individual contractors included remodelers, plumbers, electricians, painters, tile layers, engineers and decorators. All were concerned with quality and had worked with Gary previously. Several times, additional contractors were utilized when the initial contractors were on other projects – that is to say that Gary has multiple contractors to call on. In addition, I hired an architectural engineer to evaluate the removal of the possible load-bearing wall, who agreed with Gary’s initial assessment. The two contractors who did the bulk of the work, and were there the entire two months were terrific to work with – conscientious, personable, and attentive and had broad expertise. Any time there was a question of how I wanted something done, they consulted me. An example would be placement of towel racks or how high to install a toilet paper holder. They had enough experience to understand men and women’s different preferences. At times, they guided me away from my original suggestions to better solutions. As expected in a project this large, there were changes made after the work began. Examples would be change in location of outlets, type of tile, etc. At one point after the wiring and support for a ceiling fan were set, I decided to move it – the crew had no hesitation doing it. Gary was at the work site consistently, overseeing the work. He was great about answering the many questions I had and accommodating my preferences. The master shower needed disability safety grab bars. Gary has a good understanding of the specific safety criteria. There were numerous times that called for creative problem solving. One example was the change of placement to the master toilet door. Another contractor had said the door placement could not be changed due to the available framing space, but Gary made it work. My own approach to this project was to be very involved, to the point of going to stone fabricators to approve final granite countertop pieces, individual placement of floor tiles, ordering mirrors, choosing paint and fixtures. I had the resources to order my own plumbing fixtures and a unique shower bench. Gary and his crews were very accommodating in my desire for close involvement and input. In one instance, I didn't like the approach the cabinet maker took to how the drawers closed (the use of magnets to provide a soft close – which is currently the most popular.) This took a visit to the cabinet maker to discover. Gary's crew was able to modify the drawers to my satisfaction. I’d like to share several pieces of insight I got from this. First, I had an interior decorator who helped make choices that were invaluable. Second, I had the time and opportunity to do a lot of research on things like types of fixtures, surfaces, and toilets. One example was a unique fold up shower bench that took me awhile to find. Although it took a lot of time and effort, I’m glad I did. A contractor can’t know every possible new product available (e.g. lighting fixtures,) or know what your particular preferences are unless you know what options are available and tell him. I’d advise the customer to do as much of your own research as practical. I wish I could have loaded the “before” photos to show the dramatic difference – the spaces truly have been transformed. I wouldn’t hesitate to use Gary again and when the time comes to remodel my kitchen, will call him.
