They weren't that helpful. Mainly, they were my ideas, anyway, so it didn't help me that much. She was very professional, but she didn't provide a sketch. She did a free hand sketch on a piece of paper. She didn't really suggest materials. Her price was too expensive.

Gayle was very pleasant during the telephone discussion when she explained her services. She arrived promply and was able to immediately observe the need to support my interior down-size needs. Gayle is confident, professional and was delightful to work with on the project. She sketched a bookcase design that was exactly what we needed for the 8 boxes of books that had not been unpacked since we down-sized. She also sketched an ideal fireplace mantel enhancement, made suggestions for art placement and for arrangement of living/family room furniture to accomodate the new size space. Most of your suggestions have been made and we are very pleased with the outcome.

"Before meeting with the clients, I spoke with the wife and explained that an initial consultation is two-hours long at $100 per hour. I also explained an initial consultation consists of my asking questions about their lifestyle, viewing their entire home, and discovering what they do like about their home. Two rooms needed to be updated and, in the den, I was able to give them direction for the purchase of new furniture. In their second room, a sunroom, more than one furniture arrangement was possible. I questioned the clients about their needs as well as measured the space to prepare floor plans for furniture layouts. I charge $50 per hour for all work done in office. Instead of charging them for an initial consultation of two hours, I charged them for 1.5 hours. My design philosophy is to use a collaborative format to enhance a client's environment by providing possible solutions to make a room reflect their current needs."

She spent about three hours with me, walking around the outside of my house, examining all aspects of the building, walkways, lawn and plants. At every stop, she made excellent, logical suggestions about color, trim, decor, choice & appropriateness of plants, and especially the overall impression visitors get from the looks of the building and grounds. She took into account my tastes and interests, and explained the reasoning behind all her suggestions. As she had done while helping me plan and decorate the interior of my home four years ago, she came up with many ideas I would never have thought of. And she was a great help in explaining how to deal with painting contractors.

She did drawings,house walk throughs with many spontaneous suggestions each time we met with her. Her consultation taught us so many things we didn't know and made our house a WOW, the entire time being a professional, compassionate and creative force. She takes into account how much or little you want to spend and within those boundaries gives ideas that make you project look like it's worth many more times the amount! I would use her again and again even for the smallest powder room to a whole house design. And, no, I never knew her before my contact with Angies List.

Because I did not want to make costly mistakes, I decided to call Gayl and I was glad I did. In two hours, we went room to room talking about paint colors, furniture arrangement, picture arrangement, photo gallery in hallway, etc. She recommend that I remove a huge (9' by 7') wall mirror. I had the wall mirror since 1979 but I could never figure out why the room never looked quite right. Now I know why - the mirror threw everything off. Without Gayl's help, the mirror would still be there. Since then, I had the mirror removed and the room now feels brand new and everything works together. I would definitely call her again for her expert advice.

Ms. Scruton is still working with me on a general redecorating of the house. We are only about half way through or less, but so far I really like the way everythng is turning out. My boyfriend was not too sure when I told him what colors we'd picked, but when he saw them on the walls he loved them! She has been very helpful in steering to specific stores, and the subcontractors she has selected have been good so far. I am looking forward to getting the rest of the project finished!!

Gayl was very helpful. She first listened to our needs and preferences and then came up with lots of workable ideas for types and placement of furniture as well as ways to maximize storage. She left us with several sketches to help us remember what she'd suggested. It was just what we needed to get started on a "vision" for the place. We are now in the process of purchasing pieces for the apt. and feel much more confident than we would have without the benefit of Gayl's expertise.

Within a short time frame, my mother died and my father had to be placed in a nursing home. This left me in charge of their house. It was built in 1967 and I did not judge it to be in a livable or sellable condition. Amongst its many issues, the walls had cracks due to the house settling and they needed painting and repair. All the carpeting and baseboards were removed after a flooding accident during my mother's final illness. The ceiling and wallpaper hadn't been redone since the 60s. The doors were still the same from the 60s and the front window was broken and had a board to hold it in place. The cabinetry was also from the 60s and was falling apart. I knew major work was needed on the property, but as a lifetime apartment dweller I didn't know where to begin. After researching Angie's List I contacted Gayl due to her excellent reputation. Gayl's knowledge and contacts truly made everything a success. She knew what to do to make a relatively small house look bigger. She listened to my preferences and incorporated them into the house design. If she disagreed with me she would let me know but I never felt any pressure to change things - although I often did because her ideas made much more sense than mine. She accompanied me as I picked out flooring, which I got at a discount. She also got beautiful blinds for the window treatments. She went with me to Home Depot and helped me get quality items which weren't necessarily expensive. Gayl handled most of the dealings with the contractor (Jay Newman of R.A. Newman & Son) and cabinet designer. While I had no problems with the contractor, the cabinet installation had frequent issues. Gayl handled them and let the cabinet company know what was expected. Her actions and documented concerns resulted in a shake-up with the cabinet supplier. Gayl was very patient with me as I added additional stages to the project. She would often discover things I had overlooked and pointed out easy ways to improve them. She made what I thought was going to be an overall trying experience into something that went much more smoothly than I ever could have anticipated. I will definitely contact her again for any future design needs I would have.

Extremely satisfied with all aspects of the service, from the initial telephone call to the final visit. Highly professional, courteous, and pleasant to deal with. Even though the job turned out to require extra brackets, they did not add to the original estimated cost. The technician, Ruben, was very thorough, making certain that everything worked as it should before leaving. He even took off his shoes on entering the house so as to avoid (he explained) any possible problems with the tile and carpeted floors. I would happily use this service again and recommend this company without any reservations whatsoever.

Great! We couldn't be happier with our house, which now is a comfortable home. We started by using the furniture we had. For furniture, we only needed to purchase one side table, one chair, and twin beds for the extra bedroom we now had. We chose to purchase new office furniture, but could have used what we had. She helped us set priorities that made maximum impact from the beginning. She allowed us to work with her from there. This process took approximately a year. She suggested items we could look for on our own. We ordered a living room rug and some window treatments from the internet after her color suggestions. The only speed bump we had was her somewhat lengthy sickness, which delayed some of our decorating. This was obviously unavoidable, but she discounted her fee due to that delay.

Tried to call Gayl to inform her that a set of drapes that she had done for some windows were losing the stitching. I never heard back from her and it disappointed me because I felt that we had developed a good relationship during the time she extended her services to me. I thought it would be good for her to be aware of, so she could let the person know that this happened in case it did become an issue.

Gayl has the patience of a Saint. She is a pleasure to work with. Designing a room is a slow process for me. We have worked with Gayl for a year and in that time, we have just about achieved what we wanted in our family room space. We are waiting on the final pieces to arrive to complete our space.

I was extremely pleased with her approach, willingness to listen to my preferences, work with what furnishings we had, and the multiple ideas and choices she offered. We immediately made a number of furniture placement changes that looked great - so much better. We've changed wall colors, added furniture and decorative pieces she had suggested and are very pleased with the result. She offered to follow-up on any remaining questions or problems and I'd certainly call her again in the future. She exceeded my expectations, was so easy to work with - an enjoyable two and a half hours.

It went extremely well. At our first meeting, Gayl also determined my preferences in everything from color schemes to furniture styles to art. As some previous members have said in their reports, she's very willing to work within a client's budget, likes and dislikes, and to accommodate favorite furnishings or art. She can direct clients toward supply sources ranging from exclusive designer showrooms to the local Home Depot or Lowe's, depending on their budget. She is the opposite of the stereotyped interior decorator who breezes into a home and imposes her own tastes, or the fad of the month, on the customer. Gayl's services are not inexpensive but are well worth the cost, considering the experience and conscientiousness you get in return. Hiring her was my first experience with an Angie's List recommendation and was worth the annual subscription price, even if I had never consulted the list again.
