From day 1 it was a night and day experience. They actually showed up, so they were already off to a better start. Worked with the city and structural engineer to ensure safe completion of structural work, worked with me on layout and design. Work area was always tarped off to avoid dirtying up the rest of the house, and the worksite was so clean I wanted to hire them as housecleaners afterwards. Very respectful of our property and time, and our money. There were a couple change orders, and I was on the front of them every time- I knew what was going on, I was able to make decisions on which way I wanted to go with things. There was constant updates and communication, they were always willing to meet me onsite to discuss progress. Their subs were great as well. I had a lot of changes and additions I made during the project and they were happy to accommodate. I was never in the dark on anything- always knew where my money was, if there were delays, if we needed to change or update something. We've already engaged them on another project. I absolutely love these guys and would recommend them to anyone. They saved my house. I was ready to walk away from the stupid thing and now it's coming together as the dream house I hoped it would be. Please feel free to reach out to me if I can provide any more details or answer any questions for you- meghan.miller@enterollc.com
From the first contact to the last, dealing with GCM was fantastic! I put a job up for bid with four contractors that I found on Angie's List, and they were very prompt in contacting me - not quick enough to show they didn't have enough to do but not so long that it appeared they had too much on their plate.
I set up an appointment to meet with Ben Meints to come out and look at what (I thought) needed to be fixed. He arrived promptly and was professional and personable throughout the entire appointment. We covered my initial concerns, and then proceeded to look at each area of repair. One of the big problems was potential interior water damage due to several leaks in a pair of windows and the basement area almost directly below the window. After having dealt with many contractors over the years, the level of attention to detail in his examination of the problem areas showed through. He was able to get to the true source of the problems by asking questions about what I was seeing, as well as looking at other factors and really just keeping his eyes open. Best example of this was when talking about the back deck, he started asking about the materials, any water issues around the sliding door and the basement area below it. What I thought was an issue with pest damage (the subfloor between the main floor and basement had been chewed through by mice) turned out really to be an issue with the flashing and j-channel between the deck and the house. Long story short, Ben was able to determine that the repairs that were truly needed were not as extensive as I thought they would be, and based his recommendations on what was needed to repair the damage and stop further damage to those affected areas. I was initially thinking in terms of tens of thousands of dollars to repair the damage, and was relieved and pleasantly surprised when the estimate came in at a fraction of that.
When the work was to begin, Ben and the crew (Zach and Tom) showed up promptly. (They actually showed up earlier than I thought they would, which was a pleasant surprise.) The repairs went off without a hitch, and their pride in their work showed through. They were also respectful of the fact that my wife was working from home that day, and made sure they had minimal impact on her work. While all of the work couldn't be completed in one day, they got more done than I thought they would, and it was done well. They updated my wife on the progress before they began to clean up and prepare to leave, as I was still at work. I walked in just as they finished updating my wife on the progress, and they still took the time to go over the repairs with me and show me what had been completed and the remaining work to be done. When it became apparent that the weather would not allow them to complete the repairs the next day, Zach let me know he would return the next day the weather wouldn't interfere. He and Tom returned the following day, and the repairs were completed as promised.
In all honesty, I contacted GCM because the general contractor I normally used was unavailable, and I needed the repairs done before the damage got worse and winter set in. After working with GCM, I think I have found a new first option for general contractors. They take very good care of their customers from start to finish, and I would recommend them to anyone.
They were very responsive, and came within budget. There was a lot of different projects that they worked on. We had a little difficulty with them completing a small project. The window blinds were purchased by us, and they were to install them. However, there was a series of problems with the blinds that were not of their doing. At the end of the day, we didn't feel like the blinds were installed properly. Overall, there were many positives to working with them. They solved the sewer problem very quickly. They're very attentive to their customers and measure themselves against a well laid out plan. They were highly responsive to our particular timing needs prior to selling the home.

This is the 2nd time I hired GCM for a home project. They were great. Any part of the project done by a GCM employee was done well and my home was respected (they left the space cleaner than they found it). Zach was the PM and he was very helpful and communicated with me often. Lissa ordered all of the supplies I selected and quickly answered any questions I had.

As with many home projects, the scope of the project changed after demo had occurred. In this case, the change was due to plumbing code changes and lack of understanding of the existing code, which in my opinion should have been noted at the time of the quote/contact signing (which was done after the code changes were implemented). Since that wasn't the case, the project was delayed and major decisions had to be made during the project, initial fixture purchases I had made had to be returned, and smaller (hard to find) fixtures had to be purchased instead. (If you need to find a 16" sink, let me know! That is the widest I could have due to plumbing code and the size of the room.)

This project included replacing all of the bathroom plumbing (including the most of the main stack), installing waterproof window trim (the window is in the tub/shower), installing a new tile tub/shower surround, new drywall, new door trim, new baseboards, new laminate flooring, painting, and fixture installs (tub, sink/vanity, toilet, cabinets, and accessories).

I highly recommend GCM; however, if your project includes any plumbing work, find out if they plan to use Sufka Plumbing & Water Conditioning Company as their subcontractor. Sufka was the plumbing subcontractor on this project and in addition to not fully understanding the plumbing code noted above, they left a mess every time they were in my home - inside and outside of the house. They were always "sorry" when I complained (which was after every time they were at my house), yet the behavior never changed. Zach from GCM was very responsive and cleaned up after them as best he could. GCM using Sufka as their subcontractor is why this project gets a "B" for the overall rating. All of the other ratings were giving strictly on the work GCM did.
The designer was at my home for about an hour. They made a nice design and I was happy with that. Their estimate was too high and I wasn't able to do the job at the time. However, it was helpful for giving me a better picture of what needed to be done and what it'd cost.

Wow... Lot's of good and some bad here too. First - I must say that I've never been involved with an extensive remodel before, so this was a big one for me. Not having a lot of know-how with building things I hoped to rely on the contractor (GCM) for the oversight and expertise.

I knew up front (after asking) whether they did the work or whether they used contractors - so, unlike other posts here, I knew what to expect - and this was fine with me - having contractors who specialize in a particular area is probably a good thing. They could probably be more specific at the outset on this to avoid confusion though.

As the other poster mentioned - the contractors were splitting their time with various projects - including a rather large commercial project with Pappa Johns. This also didn't bother me - since I understand that they can't sit idle waiting for my paint to dry, tile grout to set, drywall mud to dry, etc. This project did tend to drag on through the end of September - which seemed a bit long to me.

Part of the delay - and probably about $1000 added expense was my fault when I selected the most awful yellow paint for both main room and bathroom. I had them repaint! It was the best-spent money of the project!

The various contractors were both high and low points.

Bad:

The people who sprayed the textured ceiling came unprepared - not enough tape to seal off the area - borrowed some duct tape from me, but damaged some painted areas removing it.

The wall that was installed to frame in the fireplace was so poorly done initially that I just about terminated the contract - nails sticking out whole sections of studs that were loose and uneven.

The sad part was that most of the quality control issues I had involved the GCM manager assigned to my project. A nice fellow but not too concerned about quality. This was unfortunate because it was what I really needed from them with my lack of experience in these things.

Good:

The tile contractor!! What a great job those guys did. I had a natural stone tile selected for the shower - and they really worked h****** the placement of the tiles to ensure that they looked well. It became the nicest part of the remodel. Even the building inspector commented on how nice it looked!

The fireplace installer - The guy knew what he was doing - but they had already framed the wall for it without checking with him and he was forced to tear out the wall framing to install the fireplace - then GCM had to reframe the wall all over again. The second reframing was the problem - the first guy who framed - and later came back to repair the reframing work, really knew his business. That guy was quick and did quality work - as far as I could tell. This took some skill on the part of contractors and GCM people because they had to work the venting around the main gas line along the outside wall - and gas lines running through the wall they were venting out of. This left very little room to get the vent installed while avoiding gas lines in the wall and outside, and ensuring safe distance from privacy wall and sliding door. They made it work and the fireplace looks wonderful and works great.

Finally - and most important, one of the owners, Ben, was terrific and was willing to bend over backwards to make sure I was satisfied with the end result. This guy was very professional in handling every aspect of the project from the bid - which he was one of the few who came and gave me one, to satisfying my concerns and complaints.

Yes...I would consider using them again (perhaps not the project manager if I could avoid that), but they were up front about the cost - made allowances for multiple changes I requested (move the fireplace, recess the lighting, tile everything, and of course - that repainting issue I created). With the exception of the textured ceiling sprayers, all the contractors were respectful and friendly and seemed to have a good knowledge of their craft.

GCM Inc. recently contacted us as a follow-up for their work last Fall, and the call reminded us how they are a customer-oriented company which strives to keep customers satisfied.
They worked closely with us and the insurance company to carefully budget the work to be undertaken.
During the work itself they directed sub-contractors and sought our approval for those sub-contractors' performance.
GCM warranted the work per professional standards.
There was a problem with securing the work on time and also a problem in bringing back a contractor to complete part of the work. GCM made good on what the sub-contractor failed to complete.
Years ago we learned the hard way that storm-chasing contractors and laborers come and go with the weather. Now we insist that our insurance carrier works with the contractors we know and trust to do the work well.
GCM Inc. is one to trust.

When I purchased my house one problem was the back door off the kitchen. It was not framed properly and the door dragged
on the floor upon opening, with an air gap on the top of the door.
Ben Meints of GCM responded promptly to my voicemail requesting an estimate to reframe and replace my back door.
He met me at my house and provided me with an estimate in a timely fashion. His estimate was $1200 less than a competitor.
Throughout the entire process Ben was very pleasant to work with, respectful and thorough with his communication.
He answered all of my questions. The workmanship was terrific and I am very happy with the framing and installation of the new door, which works great.
I would definitely call Ben and GCM for any future contracting/remodeling needs.
Horribly. GCM uses subs for most of it's work, and it's obvious. They were unreliable, messy, and unprofessional. They didn't clean up after themselves. (Very expensive) tile installation around the tub was unacceptable with a noticeable overhang that couldn't be explained; if that was the best tile installer they could find, they are in trouble. The caulking around the tub and shower is already leaking.

Then there was the pricing. The $5,999 discount was a total scam. There was no way to determine where the discount was applied. I assumed we got the bid and then the discount was applied. No way. When I asked for specifics, I got the most convoluted response. We ended up spending only $1,000 less than a bid we received for custom made cabinets, fixtures, etc. The discount was a joke. When selecting tile for the walls, shower and floor, the consultant at the store we shopped at said there was "no way" he could give us a quality product for what GCM's "allowance" was -- the allowance was the bottom end of what they carried.

In addition to all of this, their pricing included a 20% mark up for a "management" fee, supposedly for coordinating everything. Hahahahahaha.
Response from GCM Inc
"We thank [removed member name], as we do all of our customers, for taking the time to provide a review of our services. It is unfortunate that the grades given by this customer were unsatisfactory and are not what we feel is a reflection of our business practices or quality of work. GCM and its work partners take great pride in providing a quality product and a transparent invoicing process as our overall Angie’s List ratings prove. The project we performed for [removed member name] was based on one of our “Big Deal” promotions. In this case, it was for a bathroom remodel. The Bathroom big deal was designed as an update for older bathrooms. The promotion at no time included relocating of existing electrical, plumbing or HVAC systems. This particular project was beyond the standard work of the promotion and required the relocation and updating of all mechanical systems for which an estimate was provided. In addition, the estimate included allowances for all fixtures and tile work which was thus agreed upon by way of a signed contract. The work was completed as specified by the estimate and accompanying contract. The question arose at the close out of the project when the customer questioned the discounts as specified by the “Big Deal” promotion. After several emails, detailed invoicing and multiple attempts to meet with the customer and review the billing, we were told that the customer had not had time to review the billing with his son and would get back to us with any additional questions. We did not receive any further replies. We strive to cut out the typical contractor billing and are open book when it comes to all of our projects. We even line item the different portions of work (i.e. Plumbing, Electrical, etc). As we tell all of our clients, we do not consider the project complete until the customer is satisfied with our work and consider the final payment as confirmation that our work is complete. We also consider customer service to be one of our highest priorities. If a customer calls us back to address an item or problem that we missed, we always respond immediately to those requests. We have not received any such requests from [removed member name], but would be happy to respond if asked. It is very disheartening for all of us at GCM to have received such a bad rating from this customer, but as we said we would be happy to correct any deficiencies in our work or answer any questions as they relate to project costs or invoicing."
