We chose General Construction Services after receiving a number of bids from local contractors that priced the cost of finishing our basement & building a deck at a much higher level than what Dennis at General Construction Services offered. Not only was the cost of the construction affordable, we were very impressed with the outcome. The deck is a great addition to our home and the quality of the finished basement met the expectation of matching the style, color and feel of the rest of the house. GCS did an excellent job executing a pretty complicated project. I would definitely recommend them to a friend. The bid that Dennis provided was very detailed and thorough. He came by several times to take measurements and ask questions about our intentions and goals for the project. He also had his electrical and HVAC subcontractors contact us to gather information about the project. It took about two weeks for the bid to be completed, which caused us to get a little impatient, but the final result was far more complete and thorough than any of the other bids we received. The cost was also very competitive. Work started soon after we signed the contract. Dennis did a very good job of coordinating the the tasks, including bringing the various subcontractors to the site in a timely manner, and within about 6 weeks we had the foundations poured and the basic framing done on the 8'x10' kitchen addition and the 16'x20' 1st floor bedroom/basement addition. Dennis' team were receptive to the changes to the plan (there will always be changes to the plan) that we asked for. The changes were documented, invoiced and priced reasonably. There was a lot of inside work to perform, so that took another 3 months or so. Insulation, drywalling, drywall finishing, carpet removal and installation, removal of the old kitchen cabinets and appliances, etc. Again, Dennis did a good job of scheduling the various specialists to come in and do their thing. Dennis was very responsive to any issues or concerns that came up through text messaging or by phone. Problems: Main issue was that the pace of work in the middle of the project was slower than we would have liked. This was mostly an issue with one individual worker. Overall: We are very happy with the results of the project and would recommend GCS highly. Attached picture is of the kitchen interior just prior to completion. It is exactly what we had envisioned.

The results are great. Any issues that came up were addressed when things were pointed out. If I had to do it again, however, I would just hire someone else to handle the plumbing side of things. Other then that detail, Dennis and his crew were very helpful and wanted to make sure things were completed to my satisfaction. My kitchen remodel required taking down a wall, installing new cabinets, new flooring, new toilet and sink. I attached a couple of before and after pics of kitchen.

I was extremely please with the job that was completed. The exterior of my house looks great. Dennis and his crew were professional and courteous. Even as they were at removing the existing siding, gutter, etc., they always cleaned up before leaving for the day. I appreciated this especially because this was not just a one day job. They answered all my questions and kept me in the loop throughout the whole process. I plan on using this company again for some projects inside my house. Would recommend them to others.

Project took a little longer than expected but the crews were working during the hottest weeks of the year. Met or exceeded expectations. The few issues with minor aesthetics were discussed with the crew and solutions they suggested worked out well and look good. Dennis was very knowledgeable and approachable. Could easily contact him via text to go over any issues. Overall good work. Would recommend to friends and family and definitely consider for any future home improvements

Went very well. Dennis is very honest and communicates everything about what the job requires, timing, cost and any related items that you need to know upfront. I told him what I need to be done and timing and he told me what it would take to make it happen with the least impact on my property since some heavy equipment had to be brought in. He kept me up to speed with every step of the work and timing. Work was completed ahead of the original estimated date. End result and work quality was much better than I expected. Overall cost was reasonable, considerably lower than some other individuals who called themselves as the experts. I will definitely call him when I am ready for my next project. I will not even bother getting competitive bids which I call it as waste of my time.

The entire job was completed in two months, on 12/15/2014. With the exception of one sub contractor's work that we were not happy with (which Dennis handled himself for us), we were very pleased with the outcome. There were only a couple of delays due to materials not coming as scheduled. They even assisted us in getting the kitchen cabinets reinstalled, after we had refurbished them.

Overall it went very smoothly. The garage door was problematic since my garage is so old that the standard door hit my rafter. He solved that issue by using another track and now it works great. They did an excellent job of cleaning up all the loose debris, loose nails and such like, afterwards. I'm very happy with my new front steps and the tuckpointing. I'm looking forward to working with this company on future projects. <br />

In late April of this year we began work on a long-delayed kitchen remodel. We sought the advice of friends and consulted the BBB and Angie's List for a contractor. We conducted interviews and chose General Construction Services (G.C.S.) run by Dennis Grothaus, which had top ratings from both the BBB and Angie's List. <br /> Scope of work included demolition of existing flooring, cabinets and a built-in pantry; repair of kitchen walls and ceiling; installation of resilient flooring; installation of new cabinets; installation of seven interior doors; moving appliances and attendant electrical and plumbing modifications. Work was expected to take about four weeks. We arranged to live in a motel for for the first two weeks so as to interfere with work as little as possible. <br /> Demolition went well although debris removal was delayed for a week and a half (debris was supposed to be removed daily). Electrical and plumbing work went well. After that we quickly came to realize that ours was a back burner job. Work was rushed and and the crew spent less and less time on site, eventually slowing to a three hour work day. We began to see problems with work quality on the wall and ceiling repairs which we discussed with the crew chief and reported to Dennis Grothaus. <br /> The flooring work was subbed out. The sub-contractor worked quickly and in a workmanlike manner. The result was a beautiful floor delivered in one day. <br /> However work quality problems continued with the installation of the base cabinets. Working drawings were ignored. Standard practices were overlooked as well as our clearly stated wishes. Matters came to a head when my wife and I left together for medical appointments and returned three hours later. During those three hours the overhead cabinets were installed with the crown molding coming two inches short of of the ceiling and ceiling repairs were still not complete. We contacted Dennis Grothaus and told him to stop work on the overhead cabinets until we could all sit down and figure out how to correct the problem. His response was to pull the crew for three weeks. He returned with a new crew in three weeks and discussed and proposed solutions. He promised that the work would resume with the new crew all day every day until the work was complete. The next day we got a call that our crew was tied up finishing another job. The following day was the same, and the following day, and the following day, and the following day. <br /> At this point we called Dennis and advised him that we would have another contractor finish the work. While Dennis was naturally unhappy with this outcome he was cooperative. Once we secured and scheduled a second contractor the work was satisfactorily completed in five days including some extras not covered in the contract with G.C.S. In addition to the time lost while we tried to work things out with G.C.S. work was also delayed because the second contractor felt that it was necessary to take the overhead cabinets down, refinish the walls and ceiling and then rehang the cabinets. Work was not completed until early August, 9 weeks after the start of work. <br /> <br /> <br />

"I have been in the construction industry for approx. 42 years and counting. I do a variety of different construction items. Approximately 98% of my customers are very pleased with their final product. It seems that a couple of times a year I get into a job that I wish that I had not. Sometimes the customer assist the workers with too much supervision and usually this doesn't always end up well. I feel that the best thing I could do was to let someone else complete the job. There was $4,339.52 remaining to be paid on this job in which was plenty to complete the balance of the project since my company had completed 85% of the work. The other company finished the job in five days and was to be paid for their work and I was to receive the balance. Miraculously when I received a list of expenses my company had a balance of -$96.10 coming. Now i'll admit there were some areas that needed more work but we were not supposed to originally re-texture and twice paint the entire area because of blemishes that were not in my contract. One corner of the house wall in the corner of the kitchen was not plumb in which this caused the ceiling to not be level so the upper cabinets are not going to be perfectly level with the ceiling. The customer did not want there to be a gap between the ceiling and the top of the upper cabinets but, this is not uncommon in older homes. We had to stop work midway through the project because one of the base cabinets had a very small chip on the back of the cabinet that the customers had purchased. It would have never be seen when completed with the countertop installed. We were shut down ten days waiting for the new replacement cabinet to come in. The customer was not happy with the pre-painted door units in which were purchased by the customers. I've said enough regarding this job, some jobs are better left alone. Dennis and his team were very responsive and professional. I really don't have any issues to complain about. There were 2 problems with the job that were corrected without issue. First, the painting sub that Dennis used did a horrible job in priming and painting the bathroom. Without question, Dennis had his primary team, Nate and "the boys", redo the entire paint job. They cleaned up the over spray the sub left on many surfaces. Looks perfect. The second issue was the new shower base had a leak. Again, no issues and Dennis had it repaired immediately with no delays or problems. These things are bound to happen in any remodel project and I'm just grateful I didn't have to jump through hoops to get the issues resolved. Again, I was never left hanging on anything. Now lets talk about the new ceramic tile shower, floor, and bathtub surround. The ceramic tile was done by Jeff and is absolutely amazing! In fact, the bathroom looks so good now it should be in a million dollar home (mine is not even close to a million dollar home). The experience was good and the bathroom looks amazing as well as functional. In fact, I made a mistake on one of the vanities I purchased where the drawers on one side could not be opened all the way because the door molding was in the way. Nate, on his own without me asking, adjusted 3 drawers in a manner that they were fully functional. He didn't have to do that. Based on my experience, I'm confident Dennis and his crew will take care of you and if any issues do arise, will correct them promptly. I will hire again. <br />
