The job went very badly. On the first day the worker pried a live 240V cable from a beam without our knowledge, using a screw driver. He broke the insulation, creating a large spark, and melting the screw driver. This created a fire behind our range at the receptacle. It caused a lot of damage and melted the 1/2" gas line that runs to the stove. Thankfully, we were home at the time and smelled smoke. For the first 20 minutes after the initial spark, the workmen repeatedly told us that nothing was wrong, and that it's normal to continue to smell smoke like that after a spark. Then, they decided to leave for a break. Around that time, dark smoke began to billow into the kitchen. We called 911 and told the workmen to stay put. At that point, the workmen tried to spray water from the garden hose under the house, which is obviously a very bad idea with an electrical fire. Thankfully, the firemen arrived quickly and put out the fire. However, there was significant damage to the kitchen, and it has been out of service since January 15 when the incident occurred. A contractor is currently replacing the kitchen backsplash and sheetrock, painting, and installing a new oven. Our insurance has been helpful in paying for the repairs. They have also attempted to contact Golden without success. I have contacted them numerous times and David answers the phone every time. He always says that he will ask Jay, the owner, and his Mom (Miss Lois?) to call me back but I have never received a call back. On one occasion, I called later in the day, reached Jay, and asked for the return of our deposit. He declined, and offered to come and finish the job instead. I said that we would not use Golden again, and he hung up. We want to recoup the deposit that they cashed. Golden will not return the deposit even though no work was done. Literally the first thing the workmen did was set fire to our house. Their insurance should be liable for paying our deductible and Golden should return the deposit. However, they won't communicate with us or our insurance company. When the owners arrived at the house on the day of the fire, they immediately started coming up with excuses for why they were not responsible for starting the fire. Jay's Mom said that the wiring was old. The whole house was rewired two years ago by a master electrician. She then said the oven wasn't wired correctly. Our insurance company had a qualified electrician come over and inspect the wiring, and it was all correct. Since the fire, we have spoken to several other people who have had bad experiences with Golden. Please don't waste your money and time on Golden. They are not to be trusted.
